In Aternos, open Worlds, select the options for the world you want to change, then enable Keep Inventory in its gamerule list. You can also set the rule with a command in chat or the server console. The setting makes players keep their items and XP when they die.

Enable Keep Inventory in the Aternos panel

  1. Open your server’s Worlds page in Aternos.
  2. Select the options button for the relevant world.
  3. Find Keep Inventory in the gamerule list and enable it.

Aternos recommends this built-in list as the easiest way to change gamerules. The options are saved directly in that world’s level.dat file. See the Aternos Gamerules help article.

Turn it on with a command

Enter the gamerule command in Minecraft chat or the server console. The name is case-sensitive, and the correct spelling depends on the Minecraft Java version.

  • Java Edition before 1.21.11: /gamerule keepInventory true
  • Java Edition 1.21.11 and later: use /gamerule keep_inventory true. Aternos also lists the optional minecraft: prefix for the updated name.

If you are unsure which spelling applies, use the Aternos gamerule list instead of typing the name manually.

What Keep Inventory changes

When enabled, players retain their inventory and XP after dying. Aternos lists the default value as false, so the rule must be enabled if you want those items and XP preserved.

Account for the server software and dimension

Aternos says gamerules generally apply to both Java and Bedrock editions. Its version-specific naming note concerns Java Edition: versions 1.21.11 and later use the snake_case name keep_inventory, while the documented earlier Java example uses keepInventory.

To target another dimension, use that dimension’s options in Aternos or run a dimension-targeted command such as /execute in <dimension> run gamerule <rule> true, substituting the appropriate dimension and version-specific gamerule name.
