In desktop Microsoft Edge, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Downloads, then enable Show downloads menu when a download starts. Edge will open a downloads flyout in the toolbar whenever a download begins. If you also want a permanent toolbar control, go to Settings > Appearance and enable Show downloads button. You can open the Downloads interface at any time with Ctrl+J, even when no button is visible.
How do I turn on “Show downloads menu when a download starts” in Edge?
The automatic downloads flyout is controlled from Edge’s Downloads settings. These steps apply to the desktop browser on Windows and macOS.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Select Downloads in the settings sidebar.
- Turn on Show downloads menu when a download starts.
Start a download after changing the setting. The downloads flyout should open from the Edge toolbar as soon as the download begins. The setting controls the automatic appearance of the menu; it does not by itself guarantee that a permanent Downloads button is pinned to the toolbar.
What does the automatic downloads menu do?
When the option is enabled, Edge opens a toolbar flyout for each new download. Microsoft describes the menu as a place to monitor progress and manage recent downloads, rather than merely a visual notification.

- Progress and completion: the flyout can show how long a download will take and notify you when it finishes.
- Open a file: select a completed item to launch it with the associated application.
- Open the containing folder: use the item’s folder command to go directly to its location in the operating system.
- Search recent downloads: find an item without browsing through the file system.
- Remove entries: delete individual items from the displayed download list.
- Clear download history: remove the recorded list of downloads from the menu.
Microsoft’s Edge Learning Center described these management features in its downloads guide published September 12, 2023. The flyout is therefore useful both for catching a download as it starts and for locating files you downloaded recently.
How do I keep a Downloads button on the Edge toolbar?
The toolbar button is a separate control from the automatic popup. To keep one-click access visible, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance, then turn on Show downloads button.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

With that control enabled, the Downloads button remains available on the toolbar even when no download is active. Selecting it opens the same Downloads interface used for tracking and managing recent items. You can enable the button, the automatic menu, or both, depending on whether you prefer a persistent control, event-based popups, or a combination.
What is the difference between the popup, the toolbar button, and Ctrl+J?
All three routes lead to Edge’s Downloads interface, but they behave differently. Choose the route that matches how you normally retrieve files.
| Access method | Trigger behavior | Stays on toolbar? | Desktop support and administration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Show downloads menu when a download starts | Opens automatically when a new download begins. | No. It is an event-triggered flyout. | Configured in Settings > Downloads on desktop Edge. |
| Show downloads button | Opens when you select the toolbar button. | Yes, when enabled in Settings > Appearance. | Microsoft documents an administrator policy for Windows and macOS Edge 114 or later. |
| Ctrl+J | Opens Downloads on demand from the keyboard. | No button is required. | Useful when the toolbar control is hidden or unavailable. |
The automatic menu is best when you want immediate feedback. The button is better for repeated manual access, while Ctrl+J is the direct fallback when the toolbar is customized or controlled by an administrator.

Where can I find a download after the flyout closes?
Press Ctrl+J to reopen the Downloads interface without changing any toolbar setting. From there, select a recent item to open it, use the folder command to view its containing directory, or search the recent-download list.
If you prefer mouse access, enable Show downloads button under Settings > Appearance. That button remains available between downloads, so you do not have to wait for another download to trigger the flyout.
How do I get the download popup back in Microsoft Edge?
First verify that the exact option under Settings > Downloads is enabled. The similarly named Show downloads button option only controls the persistent toolbar button, so changing it will not substitute for the automatic-menu setting.
If the automatic menu does not appear
- Return to Settings and more (…) > Settings > Downloads and confirm that Show downloads menu when a download starts is on.
- Start a new download to test the behavior; the documented trigger is the beginning of a download.
- Use Ctrl+J to confirm that the Downloads interface itself is available even if no flyout opens.
If the toolbar button is missing
- Open Settings > Appearance and enable Show downloads button.
- If the control is absent or cannot be changed on a work or school computer, the browser may be managed by an administrator.
- Use Ctrl+J as an access method that does not depend on a pinned button.
These checks separate a disabled automatic trigger from a missing toolbar control. They also let you keep using Downloads while an administrator investigates a policy restriction.
Which Edge versions and platforms support the Downloads button policy?
Microsoft Learn lists the ShowDownloadsToolbarButton policy as supported on Windows with Edge 114 or later and macOS with Edge 114 or later. The same policy documentation lists Android and iOS as unsupported.

This version information applies to the documented enterprise policy for the toolbar button. The step-by-step paths in this guide are for desktop Edge; mobile Edge uses a different interface and is not covered by that policy.
Can a work or school administrator control the Downloads button?
Yes. Microsoft documents the toolbar control as an administrator policy that can be mandatory. When policy is enforced, local Edge settings may be unavailable, locked, or different from those on an unmanaged computer.
Windows policy locations
Microsoft places the setting in Group Policy under Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge. For registry-based management, the documented value is:
SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdgeShowDownloadsToolbarButton
The value is documented as a Boolean/REG_DWORD setting. An organization’s policy determines whether the Downloads button is shown, so users should contact their IT administrator if the control cannot be changed. The keyboard shortcut Ctrl+J remains the practical direct-access fallback when the button is hidden.

What can I manage from the Downloads interface?
Once the interface is open, Edge provides several actions for recent downloads:
- Review the current or completed download and its reported progress.
- Open the downloaded file directly.
- Open the folder containing the file.
- Search the recent-download records.
- Delete individual entries from the list.
- Clear the download history when you want to remove the recorded list.
The interface is a record and control surface for downloads. The automatic-menu toggle determines when it opens; the actions above determine what you do after it is open.

If an administrator has made the toolbar policy mandatory, you may not be able to override it from Edge’s Appearance settings. In that situation, do not treat a missing toggle as a browser malfunction: the control may be intentionally governed by organizational policy.

Quick checklist for restoring Downloads access
- Open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Downloads.
- Enable Show downloads menu when a download starts for automatic flyouts.
- Open Settings > Appearance.
- Enable Show downloads button for a persistent toolbar control.
- Press Ctrl+J whenever you need Downloads without relying on the toolbar.
- On a work or school device, account for the ShowDownloadsToolbarButton administrator policy.
- For policy-supported desktop management, use Windows or macOS Edge 114 or later; Android and iOS are listed as unsupported for that policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Downloads flyout close after I dismiss it?
The automatic option is triggered when a download starts; it is not a permanently open panel. Closing the flyout does not turn the setting off, and you can reopen the Downloads interface with Ctrl+J.
Can I show the Downloads button without enabling automatic popups?
Yes. The persistent button and the automatic-menu option are independent controls. Enable only Show downloads button under Settings > Appearance if you want manual access without a flyout opening at the start of each download.
What should I do if my company computer hides the Downloads button?
The device may enforce the ShowDownloadsToolbarButton policy. Use Ctrl+J for immediate access and ask your IT administrator whether the organization allows the toolbar button to be shown.
Does Microsoft document this toolbar policy for phones and tablets?
No. Microsoft Learn lists the policy as supported on Windows and macOS Edge 114 or later, and lists Android and iOS as unsupported. The instructions here therefore target desktop Edge.
