To turn on Target Champions Only in League of Legends, open an in-game match, press Esc, and bind the action in Options → Keybindings. For a press-to-toggle control, enable “Treat ‘Target Champions Only’ as a toggle” in the in-game Game settings.

Start a game or enter Practice Tool, then press Esc to open Options. Riot’s Hotkeys (Keybindings) FAQ says Keybindings is available from this menu.

Open Keybindings → Hotkeys. A topic-specific guide places Target Champions Only under Abilities and Summoner Spells → Other; assign it to a convenient key. The exact submenu placement is not documented in Riot’s FAQ, so check the live menu if a patch changes labels or organization. [Dot Esports]

Choose whether the key should work as hold or toggle. For toggle behavior, open the in-game Game settings and check “Treat ‘Target Champions Only’ as a toggle.” This setting is in the game settings, not the client settings. [Dot Esports]

Try the bind in Practice Tool or a low-pressure game. Riot recommends Practice Tool for experimenting with customized settings in its 2026 input-system update; testing this particular bind is a practical way to confirm that it works as expected.
Choose hold or toggle
| Behavior | How it works | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Hold | Keep the assigned key pressed while using the champions-only filter. | Useful if you want the filter active only while deliberately holding the key. |
| Toggle | Press the assigned key once to turn the filter on and press it again to turn it off. | Useful if you prefer not to hold a key, but remember to switch the filter off when finished. |
The sources describe how to enable toggle behavior but do not establish that either method improves player performance. Choose the one that feels reliable for your inputs and play.

What the setting changes—and when to turn it off
Target Champions Only limits cursor targeting to champions for point-and-click abilities and auto attacks. It can help prevent selecting a minion when an enemy champion is close by, such as in a crowded wave or near a turret. [Dot Esports]
It can also block the target you actually want: Baron Nashor and other neutral units are not champions. Turn the filter off before trying to target an objective or another non-champion unit. With toggle behavior, that means pressing the bind again.

If the bind does not behave as expected

Can’t find the action: Check the in-game Options → Keybindings → Hotkeys menu and look under Abilities and Summoner Spells → Other. Menu placement may change between patches.

The filter stays active: If toggle mode is enabled, press the assigned key again to turn it off. If you prefer a key that is active only while pressed, disable “Treat ‘Target Champions Only’ as a toggle” in the in-game Game settings.

You are selecting the wrong unit: Confirm whether the filter is on. Turn it off when targeting a neutral objective or other non-champion.
The exact current default key is not established by the sources cited here, so check the binding shown in your own settings rather than assuming a particular key. This is a software setting using your existing keyboard or mouse input; no additional hardware is required.
