Mario Tennis Fever is a fuller, more engaging Mario Tennis package, led by readable Fever Racket strategy and enjoyable multiplayer. Its solo campaign is the main caveat.

Mario Tennis Fever is a step in the right direction for Mario sports games—especially if you play with other people. Its Fever Rackets make matches more varied without abandoning tennis strategy, and its roster and modes give the package more breadth. The qualification is important: reviewers praised the multiplayer more consistently than the solo experience, with Adventure Mode drawing criticism for its pacing and gameplay.

What kind of game is Mario Tennis Fever?

Mario Tennis Fever is a Camelot-developed tennis game for Nintendo Switch 2, published by Nintendo and released on February 12, 2026. Nintendo’s US store lists a physical edition. It keeps the series’ arcade-tennis foundation—topsin, slices, lobs, footwork and defensive moves—while adding Fever Rackets that change what happens when players charge and unleash a Fever Shot. Nintendo’s product page lists the platform, release date and edition details.

The result is more than a roster update: choosing a racket adds another tactical variable to character selection and shot timing. Launch reviewers broadly found that the effects remain readable and contribute to match strategy, though the game’s overall appeal depends on whether you want lively matches or a substantial solo campaign.

What do Fever Rackets add to matches?

Nintendo lists 38 playable characters and 30 Fever Rackets. Each racket gives Fever Shots a distinct effect, and players can mix characters and rackets rather than treating each character as locked to one special ability. The official overview describes the system and its range of combinations: Mario Tennis Fever on Nintendo’s US store.

#1 Best Overall
Mario Tennis™ Fever (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Swing onto the court for explosive action in the latest Mario Tennis game
  • Combine topspins, slices, and other shots with new defensive maneuvers to outpace opponents
  • Keep a rally going, build up your gauge, and unleash powerful Fever Shots
  • Equip Fever Rackets to add effects to your Fever Shots like freezing the court or shrinking opponents
  • Mix and match over 30 Fever Rackets with 38 playable characters to find your own strategy

The design works because the spectacle is tied to court decisions. You still need to position, choose a shot and find an opening; the racket effect adds a consequence to building and spending Fever. Nintendo Life’s launch review praised the effects for being legible and integrated with tennis strategy, rather than making rallies impossible to follow. That is the game’s strongest improvement over a bare-bones arcade sports package: variety that changes how a point unfolds, not just how a character looks.

There is a potential competitive trade-off. A launch roundup speculated that online play might favor a subset of rackets, but that was a forecast, not evidence of a current balance problem. Nintendo’s product information establishes the number of rackets, not which combinations are strongest in today’s online environment.

How much variety is there beyond standard matches?

Nintendo identifies five broad offerings: Adventure, Tournament, Trial Towers, Mix It Up and online play. Their value differs depending on whether you want structured solo challenges, unusual rules or matches against people.

Mario Tennis Fever Standard - Nintendo Switch 2 [Digital Code]
  • Swing onto the court for explosive action in the latest Mario Tennis game
  • Combine topspins, slices, and other shots with new defensive maneuvers to outpace opponents
  • Keep a rally going, build up your gauge, and unleash powerful Fever Shots
  • Equip Fever Rackets to add effects to your Fever Shots like freezing the court or shrinking opponents
  • Mix and match 30 Fever Rackets with 38 playable characters—the most in series history—to find your own strategy
Mode What it offers What to expect
Adventure A solo adventure campaign It gives the game a story-led route, but launch reviewers disagreed about its enjoyment and criticized aspects of its pacing and tennis action.
Tournament Structured tournament matches Includes Talking Flower commentary, according to Nintendo’s mode overview.
Trial Towers A challenge-based mode Provides a different structure from standard tournament play.
Mix It Up Matches with unexpected rules and Wonder Effects Designed to disrupt conventional tennis and provide a more playful variation.
Online Customizable rooms and Ranked Matches Supports private or competitive play; actual matchmaking quality can vary over time and was not established beyond launch-period review experiences.

The range helps the game feel fuller than a package built around one match format. TechRadar found the modes, unlockable rackets and roster made for a more substantial offering, reporting one reviewer’s experience of approximately 15 hours across more than 100 matches and modes. That is an individual play report, not a completion-time estimate or a guarantee of how long the game will hold your interest.

Is Mario Tennis Fever good for single-player?

It is a harder recommendation for players who mainly want a long, satisfying campaign. Adventure Mode exists, but its presence should not be mistaken for proof of campaign depth. Nintendo Life’s reviewer found the solo offering limited and Adventure disappointing; GamesRadar criticized the campaign’s pacing and tennis action, describing the launch package as feeling incomplete. The reviews therefore point to a real weakness, though their judgments of how enjoyable the campaign is are not identical.

Solo players still have Tournament, Trial Towers and Mix It Up alongside Adventure, so the game is not limited to its story mode. Those options add format variety, but the launch reviews do not establish that they provide the sustained progression or narrative payoff a campaign-focused player may be seeking. If your main reason to buy is a substantial single-player journey, approach with caution; if you enjoy replaying challenges and experimenting with match rules, the other modes are a better part of the case.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - US Version
  • A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
  • Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
  • Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
  • Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
  • Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.

How good is the multiplayer?

Multiplayer is the clearest reason to call Fever a step forward. Local play supports one to four players on one system, while local wireless supports two to four. Online play supports one to four players, with customizable rooms and Ranked Matches. Nintendo requires a Nintendo Account, internet access and a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features. The exact play options and conditions are listed on Nintendo’s product page.

For a group that does not own the game, Nintendo says GameShare allows one Switch 2 owner with Fever to play with up to three nearby friends using Switch 2 or Switch systems. The initiating system must be a Switch 2, and access lasts only for the active sharing session. Nintendo also notes that additional games, systems or accessories may be required for multiplayer; it does not establish a universally required accessory.

Nintendo Life and GamesRadar both found the multiplayer chaotic and enjoyable, and Nintendo Life’s reviewer liked the local and online options. But those are launch-window impressions, not a measure of current matchmaking activity, server quality or the experience in every region. Nintendo’s feature list confirms that Ranked Matches and rooms exist; it cannot tell a prospective player how quickly they will find opponents today.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

How does it compare with earlier Mario Tennis and sports games?

The strongest case for improvement is in the combination of match flow, mode breadth and multiplayer use. Fever Rackets give rallies an extra layer while, in Nintendo Life’s assessment, keeping the effects understandable. Tournament, Trial Towers and Mix It Up give players more ways to vary a session, and the 38-character roster and 30 rackets create many combinations to explore.

That makes Fever a more rounded package than the bare-bones entries reviewers invoked as a comparison. It is not a clean upgrade in every dimension: campaign quality and solo depth remain the limiting factors. TechRadar also argued that the game makes only a limited case for Switch 2-specific hardware features, so the value here lies more in the tennis and its mode mix than in a showcase of the console itself.

As a launch-period indicator rather than a current verdict, Nintendo Life reported a Metacritic score of 77 from 64 critic reviews in February 2026. That dated aggregate reflects reviews available at that time and should not be read as a live score.

Should you buy Mario Tennis Fever?

Buy Mario Tennis Fever if you have a Nintendo Switch 2 and want a colorful tennis game to play with friends, or if the Fever Racket system and assortment of match formats appeal to you. Its most persuasive strengths are the readable racket effects, broad roster and multiplayer focus. Consider waiting or looking more closely at campaign impressions if your priority is a lengthy, polished solo adventure.

Nintendo rates the game ESRB Everyone with Mild Fantasy Violence. Compatible amiibo figures can be tapped to enable a character-themed tennis ball; this is an optional feature, not a requirement for playing. Nintendo’s store listing covers both details and the game’s platform requirements: Mario Tennis Fever for Nintendo Switch 2.
