How to make String from Plant Fiber
- Search bushes throughout Embervale and gather Plant Fiber.
- Open Manual Crafting.
- Choose the String recipe.
- Use 3 Plant Fiber, or any other accepted fiber, to craft 1 String instantly.
Obtaining Plant Fiber unlocks String crafting. The recipe is not restricted to a special grade of fiber: it accepts “Any Fiber,” so Plant Fiber is a valid input. If you have no workstation available, this manual recipe is the dependable early-game method.
The Official Enshrouded Wiki characterizes String as “Used to bind things together, String is an extremely important item.” That makes the choice between immediate manual crafting and more efficient station-based production important whenever your fiber supply is limited.

Where to get Plant Fiber
Gather it from bushes
Bushes across Embervale are the main source of Plant Fiber. Pick the bushes you encounter while traveling, exploring, or gathering other materials. Because the manual recipe consumes three fiber for every String, collecting fiber opportunistically prevents a later shortage when a recipe calls for String.
Pick up Plant Fiber in the world
Plant Fiber can also exist as a physical item in the world. Pick up these item drops when you see them; they provide the same usable fiber for the String recipe without requiring a bush at that moment.

Bushes can be grown from Shrub Seedlings. This gives you another way to maintain access to Plant Fiber rather than relying only on wild bushes encountered during exploration. Treat planted bushes as a renewable gathering source and continue collecting wild fiber when you are already traveling through Embervale.
Keep raw fiber for recipes that require it
Do not automatically convert your entire Plant Fiber stock into String. Some recipes explicitly require raw Plant Fiber, and String production cannot be reversed. Set aside the amount you want to retain before crafting, especially if you are preparing several different crafting recipes at once.
Manual Crafting: the instant early-game route
Recipe and cost
Manual Crafting uses 3 Any Fiber for 1 String. Plant Fiber satisfies the Any Fiber requirement, so no additional fiber type is needed. The listed crafting time is instant.
When to use it
- You need String immediately for a recipe, construction task, or other item.
- You have not yet obtained a Spinning Wheel or Spinning Machine.
- You only need a small number of String and the convenience of crafting now matters more than fiber efficiency.
- You are away from the station that normally handles fiber processing.
What the conversion means for your stock
Manual Crafting has a three-to-one input ratio. For example, 6 Plant Fiber produces 2 String, while 15 Plant Fiber produces 5 String. Count the String you need first, multiply that number by three, and leave any reserved raw Plant Fiber untouched.

All three recipes accept Any Fiber, which includes Plant Fiber. The figures are the listed quantities and times for String, the Spinning Wheel, and the Spinning Machine. The Spinning Wheel uses one fewer fiber per String than Manual Crafting, and the Spinning Machine’s listed batch uses one fiber for each String.
Using a Spinning Wheel
Why the wheel is more efficient
The Spinning Wheel converts 2 Any Fiber into 1 String in 20 seconds. Compared with Manual Crafting, each String saves one unit of fiber. Producing 10 String on the wheel requires 20 fiber, whereas the manual recipe would require 30 fiber for the same output.
How to run the recipe
- Make sure the Spinning Wheel is available to you as a progression-dependent Hunter workstation.
- Place or access the Spinning Wheel according to your current base setup.
- Choose its String recipe.
- Supply 2 Plant Fiber per String, or another accepted Any Fiber.
- Start the 20-second craft and collect the String when the station finishes.
The wheel is the practical choice when you can wait briefly and your priority is conserving fiber. It is not an instant replacement for Manual Crafting: each craft has a listed 20-second duration, so use manual production when the item is needed before the station can finish.
Using a Spinning Machine
Batch recipe and timing
The Spinning Machine makes 10 String from 10 Any Fiber in a listed 1 minute 30 seconds. Plant Fiber can fill the Any Fiber input. The one-to-one fiber-to-String ratio is the most efficient of the listed routes, but the machine is designed for a full batch rather than a single emergency String.
When the machine makes sense
- You need a sustained supply rather than one or two String.
- You can spare 10 Plant Fiber at a time.
- You have the required progression-dependent Hunter workstation available.
- You can leave the batch running for its full 1:30 listed time.
How to plan a batch
- Reserve any raw Plant Fiber needed for recipes that explicitly call for it.
- Put 10 remaining Any Fiber into the Spinning Machine.
- Select the 10-String recipe and start the 1:30 batch.
- Collect the completed 10 String before starting another batch if your station requires collection between runs.
The recipe’s listed figures establish the input, output, and duration. They do not imply that every other workstation action shares the same timing, so plan around the displayed station timer when you queue production.
Which recipe should you choose?
If you need String right now
Use Manual Crafting. It is instant, requires no station, and works as soon as Plant Fiber has been obtained. The trade-off is the highest fiber cost: three Plant Fiber for each String.

If you have a Spinning Wheel and a modest amount of time
Use the Spinning Wheel. Its 2:1 input ratio preserves one-third of the fiber you would spend by hand for the same String output, but each craft takes 20 seconds. This is the balanced option for ordinary production after the station becomes available.
If you are preparing a large reserve
Use the Spinning Machine for full 10-String batches. It consumes 10 fiber for 10 String and takes 1:30 per listed batch. The machine is the strongest choice for fiber efficiency and repeat production, provided the workstation is available and you can wait for the batch.

If the station is not available yet
Do not delay a needed craft while waiting for progression. Both the Spinning Wheel and Spinning Machine are progression-dependent Hunter workstations. Until the appropriate station is available, Manual Crafting is the supported route using the materials already in your inventory.
Alternative ways to obtain String
Spider drops
Spiders can drop String. This is useful when you need String immediately and want to preserve Plant Fiber for a recipe that explicitly requires the raw material. It also gives you a reason to collect String drops during normal combat instead of converting every fiber you find.
World pickups
String can appear as a physical world item. Pick it up whenever it is available; a found String is effectively free of Plant Fiber cost and can cover a shortfall while you save your gathered fiber.
When an alternative source is better
Use a Spider drop or world pickup when the opportunity is already in front of you and your Plant Fiber reserve is low. If you need a predictable quantity, crafting remains easier to plan because you can calculate the exact fiber requirement from the selected recipe.

Small requirements
For a target of 1 String, Manual Crafting needs 3 fiber, the Spinning Wheel needs 2, and the Spinning Machine is intended for a 10-String batch rather than a single unit. For 5 String, manual production needs 15 fiber and the wheel needs 10 fiber.

These comparisons show why the station choice matters. Manual Crafting minimizes waiting, the Spinning Wheel reduces the material cost for ordinary quantities, and the Spinning Machine gives the lowest listed fiber cost when you can use its complete batch.

Converting every Plant Fiber immediately
String is useful, but raw Plant Fiber may be required elsewhere. Before selecting a recipe, decide how much Plant Fiber must remain in your inventory. Convert only the surplus so that a later raw-fiber requirement does not force another gathering trip.
Assuming “Any Fiber” means a special material
Any Fiber is the recipe input category, not a separate item that must be discovered. Plant Fiber qualifies. If Plant Fiber is in your inventory and the recipe asks for Any Fiber, it can be used for that input.
Expecting the wheel or machine to be instant
Manual Crafting is instant; the Spinning Wheel has a listed 20-second time, and the Spinning Machine has a listed 1:30 batch time. Choose manual production for an immediate need and station production when the material savings justify waiting.
Starting an oversized batch without checking reserves
A Spinning Machine batch consumes 10 fiber at once. Check that the remaining Plant Fiber still covers your raw-material needs before starting it. If you cannot spare the full batch, the wheel or Manual Crafting may fit your current stock better.

Troubleshooting String production
The String recipe is not visible
First obtain Plant Fiber. Obtaining Plant Fiber unlocks String crafting, so check that the fiber was actually gathered or picked up and is present in your inventory. Then reopen Manual Crafting and look for String.

Check the selected route’s input: Manual Crafting needs 3 fiber per String, the Spinning Wheel needs 2 per String, and the Spinning Machine needs 10 fiber for its 10-String batch. If you are short, gather more from bushes, collect world items, or use String found from Spiders or as a world pickup.
The station route is unavailable
The Spinning Wheel and Spinning Machine depend on progression and Hunter workstations. Use Manual Crafting until the needed station is available; the station recipes are efficiency upgrades, not prerequisites for making your first String.
You need to preserve Plant Fiber
Stop converting the whole stock and switch to a Spider drop or world String pickup when one is available. If crafting is unavoidable, use the Spinning Wheel rather than Manual Crafting to reduce fiber spent per String.
A practical production routine
- Gather Plant Fiber from bushes as you travel through Embervale and pick up any loose Plant Fiber you find.
- Separate the amount you want to keep for recipes that explicitly require Plant Fiber.
- For an immediate need, craft String in Manual Crafting at 3 Any Fiber per String.
- Once the Spinning Wheel is available, use it for smaller or regular orders at 2 Any Fiber per String and 20 seconds per craft.
- When you need a reserve, load the Spinning Machine with 10 Any Fiber for its 10-String, 1:30 batch.
- Use Spider drops and world String pickups to supplement crafted supplies and protect your raw-fiber reserve.
This routine keeps the instant option available while shifting repeat production to the routes that use less fiber. It also prevents the common mistake of turning a material needed in its original form into String merely because the conversion is available.

Manual Crafting is the fastest way to turn Plant Fiber into String: 3 Any Fiber becomes 1 String instantly. The Spinning Wheel is the best general upgrade because it uses 2 fiber per String, while the Spinning Machine is best for sustained batches, producing 10 String from 10 fiber in 1:30.
