A GPU fan showing 0 RPM at idle is often normal. Many modern graphics cards use a zero-RPM mode that stops the fans during light workloads. To turn the fan on safely, first check the GPU temperature and utilization, then run a short game or benchmark. If the fan still does not respond under sustained load, use the manufacturer’s utility or MSI Afterburner to test manual control and investigate possible software or hardware faults.

Why your GPU fan may be stopped

Graphics cards may intentionally stop their fans when the GPU is cool or lightly loaded. AMD calls this Zero RPM; MSI uses names including Zero Frozr. These modes reduce noise and idle power consumption.

A stopped fan is more concerning when the GPU is under sustained 3D load, its temperature rises rapidly, or the card shows crashes, artifacts, throttling, or emergency shutdowns. Fan behavior also depends on the type of system:

  • Desktop add-in card: Manual control is often available, depending on the card, firmware, driver, and board manufacturer.
  • Laptop: The embedded controller, BIOS, and manufacturer utility commonly control cooling. A discrete GPU fan may remain stopped until a temperature threshold is reached.
  • Integrated graphics: There is usually no dedicated GPU fan. Cooling is handled by the CPU or system fan.
  • Hybrid graphics laptop: Desktop activity may use integrated graphics while the discrete GPU remains idle.

First, test whether the fan works automatically

  1. Open a monitoring utility and record GPU temperature, utilization, fan percentage, and RPM.
  2. Start a game or reputable GPU benchmark.
  3. Watch the readings for several minutes.
  4. Stop the test if the temperature rises abnormally, the system becomes unstable, or the GPU approaches its manufacturer-specified thermal limit.
  5. Return to the desktop and check whether the fan eventually stops again.

There is no universal fan-start temperature. Thresholds vary by model and firmware. If the fan starts under load and stops again at idle, the zero-RPM system is probably working normally.

What the monitoring numbers mean

  • Fan percentage: The controller’s requested duty cycle, not a guaranteed physical speed.
  • RPM: The fan’s reported rotational speed.
  • Fan curve: A temperature-to-speed relationship.
  • GPU temperature: Usually the core temperature. Some tools also show hotspot or junction, memory, and edge temperatures.
  • Fixed speed: A manually imposed setting that may override the automatic profile.

A setting such as 20% or 40% does not guarantee that the fan will spin. Some fans have a higher physical startup threshold, while firmware may continue enforcing zero RPM.

Turn on a desktop GPU with MSI Afterburner

MSI Afterburner is a Windows utility that can work with many graphics cards, not only MSI models. Download it from MSI’s official guidance or its official Guru3D distribution.

  1. Install or update the graphics driver and Afterburner.
  2. Open MSI Afterburner and select the correct GPU.
  3. Open Settings, then the Fan tab.
  4. Enable Enable user-defined software automatic fan control.
  5. Drag the points on the temperature/fan-speed graph to create a curve.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Test the result under a representative game or benchmark.

Use a fixed speed only as a diagnostic test

A temporary moderate fixed-speed setting can confirm whether the fan physically responds. Watch the fan and RPM reading while testing, and do not leave the card unattended under manual control. Afterward, use an automatic curve or restore the factory profile.

Do not enable Start with Windows until the curve has been tested. If control does not work, confirm that the correct GPU is selected, close competing tuning utilities, try the default profile, and check whether the card requires firmware-control mode. MSI also documents an Override zero fan speed with hardware curve option for some systems.

AMD Radeon: Adrenalin Edition

On supported Radeon products, open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition → Performance → Tuning. Select an automatic or manual tuning mode, locate the fan controls, and disable Zero RPM if you want the fans to remain running at low temperatures. Apply the setting and test it under load.

Exact labels and availability vary by Radeon generation, driver branch, operating system, and whether the card is desktop, mobile, professional, or OEM. AMD’s documentation on Zero RPM and fan control explains the supported behavior.

Intel Arc: Intel graphics software

On supported Intel Arc systems, use Intel’s graphics software rather than assuming a generic utility exposes every control. Intel added fan-control functionality with driver version 31.0.101.4369 and Intel Arc Control version 1.68.4938.6. Intel’s current software page includes fan, thermal, power, and telemetry controls, although availability is product- and platform-dependent.

Install the latest available driver and consult Intel’s support instructions. Feature availability may differ between desktop, laptop, and select Arc products.

NVIDIA GeForce: use the card maker’s utility or a compatible tool

NVIDIA’s consumer software path is less uniform. The NVIDIA App provides monitoring and tuning features, but NVIDIA’s consumer documentation does not establish one universal GeForce fan-curve editor for every card.

For a desktop GeForce card:

  1. Try the graphics-card manufacturer’s utility first.
  2. Otherwise use MSI Afterburner or another compatible third-party utility.
  3. Verify that the utility detects the card and exposes fan controls.
  4. Run only one active fan-control utility at a time.

NVIDIA’s Project G-Assist can set fan profiles on supported systems and peripherals, but this is not universal direct control of every card’s onboard fans. NVIDIA’s low-level NVML documentation warns that manual control transfers temperature-management responsibility to the user; it is not a recommended procedure for ordinary users.

Laptop GPU fans

Laptop cooling is frequently controlled by BIOS and the embedded controller. Look first for the manufacturer’s utility and modes such as Performance, Turbo, or Cooler Boost. Also check for BIOS, embedded-controller, and system-utility updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MSI notes that laptop GPU curves may be preset in BIOS and unavailable in Afterburner. Its Cooler Boost guidance describes a maximum-fan mode on supported laptops. Do not assume that desktop fan-control instructions apply to a laptop.

How to build a safer fan curve

A curve is generally preferable to running the fan permanently at 100%. It can balance cooling, noise, power use, and fan wear. Use the card’s automatic behavior as the starting point, then make gradual changes rather than abrupt jumps.

Temperature range Typical curve goal
Cool idle Zero RPM or the card’s minimum supported speed
Moderate temperature Low-to-moderate fan speed
Gaming load Higher speed to maintain stable temperatures
High temperature Aggressive speed or maximum, if necessary

These are design principles, not universal temperature or percentage values. Test the curve with a representative game, monitor core and hotspot/junction temperatures where available, and check for fan oscillation or sudden surges. Restore the factory curve if the system becomes unstable or the utility repeatedly conflicts with firmware.

Troubleshooting decision tree

  • 0 RPM only at idle: Usually normal zero-RPM operation.
  • Fans start during a game: The card is likely behaving as designed.
  • No spin during sustained load: Check GPU utilization, the active profile, competing utilities, driver state, power connections, and manual-control support.
  • No spin at startup or initialization: Inspect the card carefully and contact the manufacturer if the fan also fails under load.
  • Software shows a percentage but RPM remains zero: The command may be below the physical startup threshold, overridden by firmware, sent to the wrong GPU, or affected by a tachometer-reporting problem.
  • Fans repeatedly start and stop: The temperature may be hovering around the zero-RPM threshold, or multiple utilities may be fighting each other. Use a smoother curve or restore automatic control.
  • Only one fan spins: Some cards use independent fan behavior, but persistent asymmetry, noise, or overheating warrants inspection.

Hardware checks

Power off the computer before touching the card. Check for dust, a cable blocking a blade, a loose power connector, or a partially seated card. Do not put fingers or tools into a moving fan, and do not remove the cooler or shroud while the card is powered.

Grinding, scraping, clicking, a seized blade, or a fan that never responds to supported control can indicate a mechanical or electrical failure. Do not repeatedly run the GPU at high temperature just to see whether the fan eventually starts.

When to seek repair or warranty service

Stop software troubleshooting and contact the card or system manufacturer when the fan does not spin during sustained load or startup, manual control has no effect, the card overheats or throttles, or you see artifacts, crashes, shutdowns, burning smells, or visible damage. MSI specifically directs users to customer service when a graphics-card fan does not spin even when the computer boots.

For most users, no purchase is required: first-party utilities and free third-party tools are sufficient. Hardware should be replaced or repaired only after diagnosis confirms a failed fan, cooler, or graphics card, especially if warranty coverage has ended.
