How do I turn on underlined access keys in Windows 11?
Windows 11 places the control in Accessibility settings. Use this path:
- Open Settings. You can select it from the Start menu or open it with Windows+I.
- Select Accessibility in the left navigation.
- Choose Keyboard.
- Find Underline access keys and switch it on.
Open a menu-driven application and look for letters marked with an underline. Press Alt, then the marked letter. If the application uses nested menus, keep using the displayed letters or use the arrow keys and Enter after the menu opens.
Windows releases can adjust wording or the location of individual controls. If the label is not immediately visible, use the Settings search box for access keys or underline, then confirm that the result belongs to the Keyboard accessibility page.
How do I show shortcut underlines in Windows 10?

How do I use an underlined menu letter?
Use the menu’s access key only after you know which menu is active. The normal keyboard sequence is:
- Press and release Alt. This activates the application’s menu bar or exposes its menu cues.
- Press the underlined letter for the menu or command you want.
- If a submenu opens, use its underlined letter, the arrow keys, or Enter to choose an item.
- Press Esc to close an open menu without selecting a command.
The letter is a cue, not necessarily the first letter of the command in every language. Translated menus can assign different letters, and two commands can have similar labels. Always follow the underline shown by the current interface rather than memorizing an English-language sequence.

Google Workspace and Google Docs
Google’s Workspace shortcut reference lists Ctrl+U on Windows and ChromeOS, and Command+U on Mac, for underlining. The command affects the current text selection or the insertion point for text you type next. If nothing is selected, the editor may leave underline mode enabled for subsequent typing until you toggle it off.
Evernote
Evernote documents Ctrl+U for underline on Windows and Command+U on Mac. Because Evernote supports shortcut customization, a user or installation can assign a different combination or disable the default one. Check the application’s own shortcut list if the documented keys do not respond.
Is there one universal shortcut for highlighting text?
No. Highlighting is application-specific, and the same key combination can perform another command in a different editor. Do not assume that the Windows setting for underlined access keys creates a highlight shortcut.

Why can’t I see the shortcut underlines?
Several conditions can hide or change the cues even after you enable the Windows option.
- The setting is off in the wrong Windows version: Windows 11 uses Underline access keys; Windows 10 uses Enable shortcut underline under Other Settings. Use the path that matches the installed version.
- The application controls its own menus: Modern ribbon interfaces, custom game menus, and web-based editors may not render standard Win32 access-key underlines.

How do language, keyboard layout, and software version affect these keys?

- Confirm whether the person is using Windows 11 or Windows 10, because the setting names and paths differ.
