Uninstalling a Steam game removes its installed program files, not necessarily your progress or preferences. Your saves and settings may return through Steam Cloud, but Cloud coverage is optional for each game and the developer chooses which files are included. The dependable method is to finish a clean synchronization, verify Cloud support, copy local saves and configuration files to storage outside the Steam folder, uninstall only the game, and restore any files that Cloud does not cover after reinstalling.

What uninstalling a Steam game actually removes

The installed game files

A game-only uninstall deletes the local installation: the executable, downloaded content, and other files Steam placed in that game’s installation directory. Removing those files is what frees disk space. It does not by itself prove that every save, graphics preference, key binding, mod setting, or other user-created file has been deleted; those may be stored elsewhere.

Saves and settings are separate from the installation

Games commonly keep progress and configuration outside the main program directory. Steam Cloud can replicate some of those files, while other files remain only on the computer. The division is made on a game-by-game basis. A developer can include saves but omit settings, include only certain save types, or support no Steam Cloud at all. Consequently, an uninstall can be harmless for one title and destructive for another if no independent copy exists.

Why Steam Cloud is not a complete guarantee

The Steam Store page displays a Steam Cloud logo when a game supports the feature, but that logo does not mean every save or setting is synchronized. Valve states that the developer determines which files are covered. There is no reliable percentage for how often games preserve every file, so treat Cloud as one layer of protection rather than your only backup.

The safest sequence before you uninstall

Follow these steps in order. The sequence matters because an unsynchronized exit or an offline session can leave Steam with competing versions.

  1. Launch the game and save normally. Reach a deliberate save point using the game’s own save command or menu. If the title has several save profiles, make sure the profile you intend to keep is the one currently active.
  2. Exit the game cleanly. Close it through its normal quit command rather than terminating the process. Steam says Cloud files are replicated after the game exits when that game is configured for Cloud.
  3. Wait for synchronization to finish. Leave Steam open long enough for the post-exit sync to complete. If Steam reports a synchronization error, do not proceed as if the upload succeeded. Valve warns that continuing can create a conflict and potentially lose progress.
  4. Check Cloud support on the game’s Store page. Look for the Steam Cloud logo. Record the fact that the title supports Cloud, but remember that the logo says nothing about whether every setting or save type is included.
  5. Make an independent local copy. Copy the relevant save and configuration folders to a USB flash drive or another folder outside the Steam directory. This copy remains available if Cloud is disabled, incomplete, or presented with the wrong version after reinstall.
  6. Use the game’s uninstall control in Steam Library. Remove the game only after the copy is complete and you have confirmed that the files you care about are present in the backup destination.

How to check Steam Cloud coverage

Use the Store-page indicator as a starting point

Open the game’s Steam Store page and look for the Steam Cloud logo. Its presence means the game has been configured to use Steam Cloud, not that Steam has archived every file on your computer. The developer selects the paths and file types that participate.

Separate progress from preferences

Before deleting anything, list what you need to preserve: campaign or character saves, local profiles, controller mappings, graphics choices, key bindings, mod-related configuration, and screenshots or other personal files. Cloud may cover one category but not another. A clean Cloud sync protects only the files the developer registered.

Do not override an error

A sync warning is a decision point, not a notification to dismiss. If Steam cannot determine whether local or Cloud data is current, uninstalling immediately can leave you with an older copy or no usable copy. Keep the game installed, retain the local files, and resolve which version represents your intended progress before removing it.

Where Steam and game saves are stored

Steam’s default Cloud data locations

Valve lists these default locations for Steam Cloud data. Inside each location, Steam organizes files by your Steam account ID and the game’s app ID. Preserve the relevant directory, or copy the complete userdata directory if you cannot confidently identify the title and have enough storage.

Operating system Default location What the folders represent
Windows C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata Account-ID folders contain app-ID folders for individual games.
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata Account-ID and app-ID subfolders hold Steam-managed data.
Linux ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata Account-ID and app-ID subfolders hold Steam-managed data.

These are default locations, not a promise that every title uses them for every file. A game can keep additional local data elsewhere, and a third-party developer decides what its Cloud configuration includes.

Third-party games can use other folders

For a non-Valve title, consult the developer’s documentation or the game’s official community support for the authoritative save location. Do not assume that finding an app-ID folder means you have found all of your progress. Some games place settings beside the save files, while others separate them; only the developer’s instructions can establish the complete set.

Copy files outside the Steam directory

Make the backup destination independent of the installation you are about to remove. A second folder on another drive or a USB flash drive works because deleting or repairing Steam cannot erase both copies at once. Keep the original directory untouched until the copied files can be opened or at least clearly identified in the destination.

Uninstalling a game versus uninstalling Steam

Removing one game

In Steam Library, select the game and use its uninstall command. This targets the selected game’s installed content. Your separate backup and any Cloud data are outside that deletion operation, although Cloud still depends on the game’s developer-selected coverage.

Removing the Steam client

Uninstalling Steam itself is broader. Valve instructs you to exit Steam and move the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first, because uninstalling Steam removes installed game content. That move is a preservation measure for installed files; it is not a substitute for copying saves and settings, which may be stored in userdata or in locations chosen by the game developer.

Why scope matters

If your goal is only to reclaim space from one title, do not remove the client. If you are replacing a Steam installation or changing drives, treat the operation as two separate jobs: preserve installed content with the steamapps move described by Valve, and preserve user data with an independent save/configuration copy.

What Steam’s Backup Feature does—and does not do

The built-in path

Steam’s game backup command is available from Library: right-click the game, open Properties, choose Installed Files, then select Backup game files. It is useful for preserving the downloaded program so you may avoid downloading it again.

Why it cannot replace a save backup

Valve warns that backups for Valve-created games omit saved games, custom multiplayer maps, and configuration files. For third-party games, save locations vary. Therefore, keep the separate copy of local saves and settings even when you create a Steam backup. The two backups protect different things: Steam’s feature primarily preserves installed game data, while your manual copy preserves user data that the feature may omit.

How to use both layers

If bandwidth or time is a concern, create the Steam backup for the game files and independently copy the save/configuration folders. Label the external copy with the game name and date. Do not delete the manual copy merely because the Steam backup completed successfully; completion of one does not confirm inclusion of the other.

Reinstalling and restoring your data

Let Cloud data arrive before launching

Install the game again while Steam is online and allow supported Cloud data to download before the first launch. Steam replicates Cloud files around game exits and starts, so launching immediately can create a new local state before the existing Cloud copy has finished arriving.

Restore files that Cloud did not cover

After the installation completes and Cloud synchronization has settled, close the game and Steam if the game’s instructions require it. Copy the manually backed-up saves or settings into the locations expected by that game. Use the developer’s documentation for the exact destination, especially for third-party titles; the default Steam userdata path is not proof that every file belongs there.

Test before deleting the backup

Start the game and verify the intended save profile, campaign progress, and important settings. If the game offers several profiles or slots, check more than one. Keep the external copy until you have confirmed that the restored state survives a normal save and exit; only then is it safe to treat the reinstall as complete.

Handling a Steam Cloud conflict

Why conflicts appear

Conflicts commonly follow offline play, an interrupted synchronization, or a game that was used on another computer. Steam then has a local version and a Cloud version with different timestamps or contents. The warning is evidence that the two copies are not known to be identical.

Choose by timestamp and intended progress

Compare the displayed dates and times with when you last played and saved. Choose the version that contains the progress you actually want, rather than selecting automatically. If the local copy is newer because you played offline, selecting the older Cloud copy can roll back that session; if the Cloud copy is newer, selecting local can discard it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the manual backup as a safety net

If neither option is clearly correct, cancel the decision, preserve both the local files and your independent backup, and resolve the choice only after comparing them. Steam Support says it can clarify how the Cloud system works but cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts for you. That limitation is why the external copy should exist before an uninstall.

When saves appear missing after reinstall

First confirm that you are signed into the Steam account that owns the game and that the correct title was installed. Then check whether Cloud finished downloading and whether the game expects saves in a developer-defined location outside Steam’s default userdata tree. If you made a manual copy, close the game and place the files in the documented location, then relaunch and verify the profile. Do not overwrite a newer file until you have retained a copy of it.

When settings did not return

Missing graphics options, key bindings, or controller preferences do not necessarily indicate lost progress. They may simply be files the developer excluded from Cloud. Restore the backed-up configuration files using the game’s documented path. If no official path is available, use the game’s official support or community documentation rather than guessing and overwriting unrelated files.

Which preservation method fits your situation?

Method Cloud coverage Backup completeness Restore effort Conflict risk
Steam Cloud only Available only when the game supports it; the developer selects the files. May omit saves, settings, or particular file types. Usually automatic after reinstall when synchronization succeeds. Higher after offline play or an unsynchronized exit.
Manual copy of saves and settings Does not depend on Cloud. As complete as the folders you identify and copy; third-party locations require developer guidance. Manual placement after reinstall. Lower if the copy is made before uninstall and kept outside Steam.
Steam Backup Feature alone Not a Cloud archive. Valve says Valve-game backups omit saved games, custom multiplayer maps, and configuration files; third-party locations vary. Can restore installed game files, but may still require a separate save restore. Does not solve a missing or conflicting user-data copy.
Cloud plus manual copy Cloud provides the automatic layer for included files. Manual files cover omissions when you copy every relevant location. Often automatic, with manual restoration only for omitted data. Best protection because an independent version exists if Cloud conflicts.

A practical decision path

If the game shows Steam Cloud and you are online

Still make the independent copy. Complete a normal save, exit, wait for synchronization, confirm the Store-page Cloud indicator, and then uninstall. The copy protects against the specific files the developer chose not to synchronize and against a Cloud conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the game has no Steam Cloud indicator

Assume your local files are the only copy until the developer’s documentation proves otherwise. Find the save and configuration locations, copy them outside Steam, and retain that copy through the uninstall and reinstall.

If you played offline recently

Reconnect and allow a clean synchronization before uninstalling. If Steam raises a conflict, preserve both versions and select only after checking timestamps and progress. An offline session is precisely when relying on an automatic Cloud copy is most dangerous.

If you are removing Steam itself

Follow Valve’s instruction to exit Steam and move steamapps outside the Steam directory if you need to preserve installed content. Separately back up userdata and any developer-documented folders for saves and settings. Reinstalling the client does not recreate files that were never copied.

Common mistakes that cause avoidable loss

  • Uninstalling while a sync error is visible: the latest local save may never have reached Cloud.
  • Assuming the Cloud logo covers everything: developers choose individual files, so settings or special save types can remain local.
  • Copying only the installation directory: user data may be in userdata or another developer-selected path.
  • Relying only on Steam’s game backup: Valve explicitly excludes saved games and configuration files for Valve-created titles.
  • Launching immediately after reinstall: a new local state can be created before supported Cloud data finishes downloading.
  • Deleting the external copy too soon: keep it until the restored game opens the intended profile and successfully saves and exits.

What to remember

A clean synchronization reduces risk, but it is not an independent backup. Steam Cloud is optional per game and may cover only selected files; local save locations vary, particularly for third-party games. Copy the relevant data outside the Steam directory before uninstalling, use Steam’s Backup Feature only as a supplement, and resolve any Cloud conflict by comparing versions rather than choosing blindly. Valve’s own guidance makes the limitation explicit: Steam Support can explain how Cloud works, but it cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts.
