The game shows the Max Particle and Pokémon Candy cost before you confirm; check that panel for the exact cost for that Pokémon and upgrade.
How to unlock or level up a Max Move
- Collect Max Particles at a Power Spot by opening its details and tapping the particle bubbles, or collect them while exploring, including through Adventure Sync. Niantic explains collection and training in its Max Particles and Dynamaxing or Gigantamaxing help article.
- Open the main menu and tap Pokémon Storage.
- Select the eligible Max Pokémon you want to train, then scroll to Max Moves.
- Tap the move you want to improve and choose the target level shown in the game.
- Tap Train. Review the displayed Max Particle and Candy cost, then confirm only if you want to spend those resources.
What each Max Move does
Max Pokémon can use three kinds of Max Moves. Their functions differ, so choose based on the role you need in a Max Battle.

- Attack: A powerful attack used during Dynamax. For a Dynamax Pokémon, its type is based on the Pokémon’s Fast Attack. Niantic says a Fast TM or Elite Fast TM can change the underlying Fast Attack and therefore the Max Attack’s type.
- Max Guard: Reduces damage the Pokémon takes from a Power Spot Boss.
- Max Spirit: Restores some HP to the user and allied Pokémon.
Eligible Gigantamax Pokémon may have a species-specific G-Max attack, which can differ in type from the Pokémon’s Fast Attack. See Niantic’s Dynamax and Gigantamax overview for the move descriptions and distinction.

Niantic identifies Max Particles and Pokémon Candy as the resources used to unlock and train individual Max Moves. Training improves the move’s effectiveness and awards XP. The official help pages do not give a complete current numeric cost table by species, move, and target level, so there is no reliable universal total to quote: use the cost displayed in the game’s training confirmation for your selected Pokémon and upgrade.

Do not confuse move training with Max Battle entry. Niantic says Max Particles are only spent on a Max Battle after the boss is defeated; the move-training screen separately asks you to confirm its displayed particle and Candy cost.
How to collect enough Max Particles
Visit Power Spots and tap the particle bubbles on their details screen, or collect particles while exploring; Adventure Sync can count toward collection. Niantic’s English Help Center page states a daily collection limit of 800 Max Particles and a storage cap of 1,500. A localized version surfaced with a different storage cap, so treat those as the figures stated on the English page rather than guaranteed values for every region or game version. Check the current in-game display for your account.

Which Max Move should you train?
Prioritize the function your team needs: Attack for damage, Guard to reduce damage from a Power Spot Boss, or Spirit for healing. If you are training the Attack on a Dynamax Pokémon, its type follows the Fast Attack; changing that Fast Attack with a Fast TM or Elite Fast TM can change the Max Attack type. Gigantamax Pokémon with a G-Max attack follow their species-specific move instead.
