Dragon’s Dogma 2 has ten vocations. Fighter, Archer, Mage and Thief are available when you create your character; Warrior, Sorcerer, Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer require specific quests, story events or NPCs. Rank each vocation by fighting, spend Discipline Points (DEP) at a Vocation Guild or vocation-service inn, and reach rank 9 to unlock its full skill list. Unlocked augments remain available when you change vocation, but weapon skills require their matching vocation and weapon.

All ten vocations at a glance

Vocation How to unlock Weapons and restrictions
Fighter Available at character creation. Sword, mace and shield; available to pawns.
Archer Available at character creation. Bow; available to pawns.
Mage Available at character creation. Staff; available to pawns.
Thief Available at character creation. Daggers; available to pawns.
Warrior Complete Vocation Frustration and return the greatsword to Klaus in Vernworth. Greatsword or hammer; available to pawns.
Sorcerer Complete Vocation Frustration and return the archistaff. Feast of Deception can also unlock it. Archistaff; available to pawns.
Mystic Spearhand Speak with Sigurd in Melve or Harve, or meet him during the relevant story or dragon route. Duospear; Arisen-only.
Magick Archer Complete Put a Spring in Thy Step. Magick bow; Arisen-only.
Trickster Speak with Luz, the Oracle, at the Reverent Shrine in Battahl. Censer; Arisen-only.
Warfarer Complete The Sotted Sage by giving Lamond three Newt Liqueurs. Mixed weapons; Arisen-only.

“Arisen-only” means the vocation can be selected by your player character but not assigned to a pawn. Fighter, Archer, Mage, Thief, Warrior and Sorcerer can all be used by pawns.

What you need to know before unlocking classes

Four vocations are immediate choices

Fighter, Archer, Mage and Thief appear during character creation, so no quest or payment is required to start them. You can also change among available vocations later at a guild or an inn that offers vocation services.

Six vocations are quest or NPC rewards

The remaining six are not simply hidden behind a high character level. Their availability depends on the relevant quest, story state, NPC encounter or item hand-in. NPC positions and access can change with story progress, affinity and character movement, so an apparently missing NPC does not necessarily mean the vocation is unavailable.

#1 Best Overall
Dragon's Dogma 2 - PS5
  • A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories.
  • Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey.
  • Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.

Vocation rank is separate from character level

Defeating enemies grants vocation experience to the vocation you currently have equipped. Each vocation has its own rank, and rank 9 is the maximum. Character level continues on its own track, so changing vocation does not erase your overall level or force you to begin the game again.

Plan your unlocks before you travel

A little preparation prevents most vocation detours. Keep a note of which of the six locked vocations you are pursuing, then check the named NPC or quest whenever the story moves you to a new region. Do not assume a guild menu is broken because a class is absent: guilds only display vocations whose conditions you have fulfilled.

Carry or store the relevant equipment before changing. A Warrior needs a greatsword or hammer, Sorcerer needs an archistaff, Mystic Spearhand needs a duospear, Magick Archer needs a magick bow, and Trickster needs a censer. Warfarer is the exception because its appeal is combining several weapon categories, but that also makes storage and inventory planning more important.

If you are building a party around pawns, unlock your Arisen-only vocation without expecting to duplicate it on a hired companion. Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer cannot be assigned to pawns. The six other vocations can fill those pawn slots, and a hired pawn keeps the vocation and setup chosen by its owner.

Quest routes for the six locked vocations

Warrior and Sorcerer: Vocation Frustration

Vocation Frustration is the main unlock route for both Warrior and Sorcerer. Return the requested greatsword to Klaus in Vernworth to unlock Warrior, or return the archistaff to unlock Sorcerer. Sorcerer also has a second documented route through Feast of Deception, which is useful if the normal hand-in is no longer convenient in your current story state.

The two rewards are separate vocation unlocks, so confirm which weapon the guild is requesting before you leave. Once the hand-in is accepted, visit a vocation service point and spend DEP to activate the newly available class and buy its starting skills. If Sorcerer appears through Feast of Deception instead, the same guild procedure applies after the story-based unlock.

Mystic Spearhand: find Sigurd

Speak with Sigurd in Melve or Harve to obtain Mystic Spearhand. You may instead meet him during the relevant story or dragon route. Because his appearance is tied to story progression and location, check both settlements and revisit them after major events if he is not immediately present. Mystic Spearhand uses a duospear and cannot be assigned to a pawn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sigurd also matters later as the vocation’s Maister. Unlocking the vocation and receiving the Maister teaching are separate interactions, so keep talking to him after the required affinity or dragon encounter condition is met.

Magick Archer: Put a Spring in Thy Step

Complete Put a Spring in Thy Step to unlock Magick Archer. The reward is restricted to the Arisen and uses the magick bow. The quest also establishes the route to Magick Archer’s Maister, Cliodhna, described below.

Trickster: Luz at the Reverent Shrine

Travel to the Reverent Shrine in Battahl and speak with Luz, the Oracle. That conversation unlocks Trickster and its censer weapon. Trickster is Arisen-only and is built around illusions that direct danger and create openings for pawn damage rather than dealing all damage directly.

Luz has a second role as Maister. To receive her teaching, reach her physical form on the shrine roof; the oracle conversation that unlocks the vocation and the later teaching reward should be treated as separate steps.

Warfarer: The Sotted Sage

Give Lamond three Newt Liqueurs during The Sotted Sage to unlock Warfarer. Warfarer is the only vocation in the list explicitly built around carrying and switching among several weapon types. Ken Mendoza, Promotion Producer for the PlayStation Blog, described it as “a vocation that allows you to engage in combat while switching between the weapons of other vocations.” It is Arisen-only.

Rank #2
Capcom Dragon's Dogma 2 Standard Anglais Playstation 5 [video game]
  • A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
  • Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
  • Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.

Lamond is also the Warfarer Maister, so return to him after the quest for the separate tome. Because Warfarer can draw on several weapon categories, unlock the skills you actually plan to use before filling your pack with every possible weapon.

How to rank a vocation and buy its skills

  1. Visit a service point. Use a Vocation Guild or an inn that provides vocation services.
  2. Select an unlocked vocation. If it is newly available, spend the required Discipline Points (DEP) to unlock it. The same service menu is where you purchase that vocation’s skills.
  3. Equip the correct weapon. Weapon skills only function when both the compatible vocation and its weapon are equipped. An augment that you learned on another vocation does not change that requirement.
  4. Fight with the vocation active. Defeating enemies earns vocation experience and raises the current vocation’s rank.
  5. Return to the guild as ranks open. Higher ranks expose additional weapon skills and core abilities. Rank 9 is the cap.
  6. Store unused equipment before switching. Keep vocation-specific weapons and armor in storage so a class change does not fill your inventory or encumber you with gear you cannot use.

Discipline Points are spent at the guild; they are not the same progression measure as character level. Your main pawn has an independent progression track. Hired pawns keep the vocation and setup selected by their owners, so changing your own class does not alter a hired pawn’s build.

A safe progression loop

When testing a new vocation, change at a service point, equip only the weapon you need, and fight normally until the next rank becomes available. Return to the guild to spend DEP, then decide whether to continue to rank 9 or switch back. The new class starts its own vocation-rank progression, while your overall character level remains intact.

Before every switch, check three things: which weapon skills you intend to use, which augments you want equipped, and whether spare weapons are in storage. This avoids mistaking an unequipped weapon for a missing skill and prevents accidental encumbrance. The same checklist is especially useful when moving into or out of Warfarer.

Maister teachings and the ultimate skills

Maister teachings are separate rewards from ordinary vocation unlocks and rank purchases. You normally need to meet the Maister, satisfy an affinity or quest condition, receive a special tome, and then use that tome. Acquiring the tome and using it are two distinct steps.

Vocation Maister and requirement Tome and teaching
Fighter Lennart in Melve; affinity or Readvent of Calamity can lead to the reward. Soldier’s Code teaches Riotous Fury.
Archer Taliesin. Heavenly Shot.
Mage Trysha after Spellbound. Conjurer’s Jottings teaches Celestial Paean.
Sorcerer Eini after Spellbound; Myrddin has a separate appraisal route. Enchanter’s Almanac teaches Meteoron; Myrddin’s Sorcerer’s Appraisal route leads to Maelstrom.
Thief Flaude and Srail at Nameless Village. Blades of the Pyre and Formless Feint.
Warrior Beren after Claw Them Into Shape and Beren’s Final Lesson. Champion’s Fable teaches Arc of Might.
Trickster Luz at the Reverent Shrine; reach her physical form on the roof. Theurgist’s Rite and Dragon’s Delusion.
Mystic Spearhand Sigurd after building affinity or after the dragon encounter. Paladin’s Enigmata teaches Wild Furie.
Magick Archer Cliodhna after Put a Spring in Thy Step. Spellbow’s Paradox teaches Martyr’s Bolt.
Warfarer Lamond after The Sotted Sage. Grandmaster’s Path teaches Rearmament.

How to make a Maister reward appear

  1. Complete the listed prerequisite quest or affinity condition.
  2. Speak to the Maister again at the stated location and accept the tome.
  3. Open your inventory and use the tome; merely possessing it does not teach the skill.
  4. Visit a vocation service point and equip the resulting Maister skill through the appropriate vocation’s skill menu.

If a Maister does not provide the tome immediately, verify the prerequisite, revisit the NPC after a story event, and check whether the NPC has moved. The documented routes depend on affinity and quest state rather than only on vocation rank.

Several vocations have more than one named figure involved. Sorcerer, for example, has Eini’s Enchanter’s Almanac route after Spellbound and Myrddin’s separate appraisal route for Maelstrom. Thief’s two named figures, Flaude and Srail, likewise correspond to two teachings. Treat each tome as its own reward instead of assuming that unlocking the vocation grants every ultimate skill at once.

What changes when you switch vocation?

Augments carry over

Once an augment is unlocked, it remains available after changing vocation. This lets you build a pool of useful passive bonuses across several classes and then select from that pool on a later vocation.

Weapon skills do not carry over as active attacks

Weapon skills remain tied to their compatible vocation and weapon. A skill learned on Fighter will not become a Thief attack simply because the character has changed class, and a weapon skill cannot be used without its required weapon equipped.

Equipment and encumbrance matter

Switching can leave you carrying weapons and armor for several classes at once. Store gear you are not using before changing, especially when preparing to test Warfarer’s multiple weapon types.

Main pawn and hired pawns are separate

Your main pawn has an independent progression track, so changing your own vocation does not reset the pawn’s vocation rank. Hired pawns retain the vocation and equipment setup selected by their owners. If a hired pawn has a class or skill arrangement you want to keep, dismissing and rehiring is the owner’s choice; your own vocation changes do not edit that pawn.

Choosing between the ten vocations

Vocation Primary equipment or approach Party and control profile Pawn availability
Fighter Sword or mace with shield. Close-range weapon-and-shield combat. Yes.
Archer Bow. Ranged weapon play. Yes.
Mage Staff. Support and curative spell emphasis. Yes.
Thief Daggers. Close-range dagger combat. Yes.
Warrior Greatsword or hammer. Heavy close-range weapon play. Yes.
Sorcerer Archistaff. Offensive spell emphasis. Yes.
Mystic Spearhand Duospear. Arisen-only hybrid weapon vocation. No.
Magick Archer Magick bow. Arisen-only ranged magick weapon play. No.
Trickster Censer. Illusions and control that let pawns deal much of the damage. No.
Warfarer Weapons from multiple vocations. Broadest weapon flexibility and on-the-fly switching, with lower basic stats and greater inventory demands. No.

Compare by range and party job

Fighter and Warrior occupy close range, with Fighter centered on sword, mace and shield and Warrior on heavier greatsword or hammer attacks. Archer supplies bow range, while Thief stays close with daggers. Mage is the support and curative choice; Sorcerer emphasizes offensive spells. These six can be assigned to pawns, making them useful when you want the party to repeat a role.

Silent Hill 2 (PS5)
  • Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
  • KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
  • The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
  • Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
  • Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K

Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer and Trickster are player-character choices that add hybrid, ranged-magick or illusion-based control. They cannot be delegated to a pawn, so selecting one changes what you personally contribute to the party. Warfarer has the broadest weapon flexibility, but its lower basic stats and extra equipment demands are part of the trade-off.

Mage versus Sorcerer

Choose Mage when your party needs support and curative spell emphasis. Choose Sorcerer when you want a stronger offensive spell focus. Both are pawn-eligible and use an exclusively staff-based weapon category, but their spell priorities differ.

Trickster versus direct-damage classes

Trickster is a control choice: its illusions shape enemy attention and create opportunities for pawns. It is less suitable if you want every attack to come directly from the Arisen, but it can turn party positioning and pawn damage into the center of your strategy.

Warfarer’s flexibility and cost

Warfarer offers the widest weapon selection and can switch among other vocations’ weapons. That flexibility comes with lower basic stats and the practical burden of carrying multiple weapon types. It is best for players prepared to manage inventory and select skills around several equipment sets.

Common unlock and upgrade problems

  • The vocation is missing from the guild menu: confirm that the quest, NPC conversation or item hand-in was completed; the guild cannot sell a vocation whose unlock condition has not been met.
  • The NPC is not where expected: story state, affinity and NPC movement affect availability. Recheck the alternate location or return after a major story event.
  • A Maister gave no skill: receiving the tome is only the acquisition step. Use the tome from your inventory, then equip the teaching through the vocation menu.
  • A learned skill is unavailable after switching: check both the current vocation and the equipped weapon. Augments persist, but weapon skills do not become cross-vocation attacks.
  • Changing class makes the character overburdened: place spare vocation weapons and armor in storage before switching.
  • A pawn cannot use a vocation: Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer are Arisen-only. Hire or train a pawn with one of the six pawn-eligible vocations instead.
  • You cannot find a second ultimate teaching: review the Maister table for separate NPCs and routes. Sorcerer and Thief, in particular, have multiple named reward paths.
  • You changed vocation and lost your attack: the skill is probably still learned but unavailable because the required vocation or weapon is not equipped. Switch back, equip the matching weapon, or select an augment instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many vocations are in Dragon’s Dogma 2?

There are ten. Fighter, Archer, Mage and Thief are available at character creation. Warrior, Sorcerer, Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer require quests, story encounters or specific NPC conversations.

What is the maximum vocation rank?

Rank 9 is the maximum for every vocation. Defeat enemies while that vocation is active to gain vocation experience, then spend Discipline Points at a Vocation Guild or vocation-service inn on newly available skills.

Do augments stay unlocked when I change vocation?

Yes. Unlocked augments remain available after a vocation change. Active weapon skills are different: they require the compatible vocation and the correct weapon, so they do not become universal attacks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can pawns use every vocation?

No. Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer are Arisen-only. Fighter, Archer, Mage, Thief, Warrior and Sorcerer can be assigned to pawns, including your main pawn.

How do I unlock Warrior and Sorcerer?

Use Vocation Frustration. Return the requested greatsword to Klaus in Vernworth for Warrior or return the archistaff for Sorcerer. Sorcerer also has a documented route through Feast of Deception.

Why did a Maister give me a tome but no skill?

Receiving the tome is only the first step. Open your inventory and use it, then visit a vocation service point and equip the resulting teaching from that vocation’s skill menu.

Where do I unlock Warfarer?

Complete The Sotted Sage by giving Lamond three Newt Liqueurs. Lamond is also Warfarer’s Maister, but his Grandmaster’s Path tome for Rearmament is a separate reward after the vocation quest.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I find a vocation NPC?

NPC availability can change with story state, affinity and movement. Check the alternate documented location, revisit after a major story event, and confirm that the relevant quest or item hand-in was completed.

The Bottom Line

Unlock the four starting vocations immediately, then pursue the six quest and NPC routes as their story conditions become available. Rank each vocation through combat to rank 9, spend DEP at a guild, use every Maister tome from your inventory, and store spare equipment before switching. Augments carry across classes, but weapon skills do not; plan around the Arisen-only status of Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer.
