How to Unlock and Use Parry in Code Vein 2

Press L1 as an attack lands on PlayStation—but only a parry-capable defensive option can parry. Here’s how to choose gear, practice the timing, and use guard or dodge as alternatives.

On PlayStation, press L1 just as an enemy attack lands to parry it. Pressing L1 earlier gives you a normal guard instead, which reduces damage. Parrying also depends on your equipped defensive option: not every shield or defensive item can parry, and the early Bleeding Shield (Light) cannot.

How to unlock parrying

In Code Vein 2, getting access to a parry means choosing and equipping a defensive option that supports it. The official Gameplay Guide describes a choice of Defensive Formae, including Guard, Counter, and an evasive maneuver. A Bandai Namco Europe-hosted beginner guide also describes defensive equipment that can block, parry, or change how your dodge works.

The reviewed official guides do not identify one universal quest, item, or location that unlocks parrying. Check the description of your defensive equipment and the defensive slot before relying on a parry. Do not confuse Defensive Formae labels such as Guard or Counter with a guarantee that a particular equipped item supports the timed parry.

Bleeding Shield (Light) is for blocking, not parrying

The beginner guide lists the early Bleeding Shield (Light), found in the MagMell Island Ruins, as an option that blocks physical damage completely without chip damage. It explicitly cannot parry. Its strong physical block can help while learning enemy attacks, but equipping it will not make L1 perform a parry.

How to parry on PlayStation

  1. Equip a defensive option whose description indicates that it can parry.
  2. Watch for an enemy attack with a clear wind-up, then press L1 as the hit lands. Sony’s hands-on report describes L1 as reducing damage when used to block, or parrying completely when pressed just as an attack lands.
  3. If you get a guard rather than a parry, check both your timing and your equipped defense. An early input may guard, and some defensive options do not parry.

The report gives qualitative timing, not a frame count or exact duration for the parry window. No comprehensive list of parryable attacks is established in the reviewed guides.

How to practice without relying on a parry

The beginner guide cautions that enemy attacks can be difficult to read early and recommends trying parries after gaining more experience. Start with an attack whose timing is easy to see; avoid beginning an attack animation immediately before the enemy’s hit if you want to be ready to respond. If you miss the timing, use a normal guard or dodge rather than assuming every incoming attack can be parried.

Parry, guard, and dodge: what changes

Defense What it does What to know
Timed parry Can stop an attack completely when timed as it lands, according to Sony’s PlayStation hands-on report. Requires a parry-capable defensive option. No verified numeric timing window is provided.
Normal guard Reduces damage from an attack, according to Sony’s PlayStation hands-on report. Useful as a fallback while learning; defensive equipment determines the available behavior.
Dodge A defensive alternative; the official Gameplay Guide includes evasive maneuvers among Defensive Formae. On PlayStation, Sony’s report identifies Circle as dodge. Other platform bindings are not confirmed by the reviewed sources.

Controls on Xbox and PC

The cited L1 instruction applies to PlayStation. The reviewed sources do not confirm equivalent Xbox or PC bindings, so check the in-game control mapping for your platform rather than assuming the same button.

What not to confuse with a parry unlock

The official FAQ says the second weapon becomes available after upgrading any Jail to +11; that progression requirement is not a parry unlock instruction. The FAQ references version 2.0.3, released September 24, 2026. Bandai Namco Europe’s version 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 patch notes, published April 3, 2026, cover combat-action adjustments but do not specify a parry window or unlock location.
