To unlock the complete roster, play Musou Mode rather than Free Mode, plan six faction-focused clears for the 40 regular officers, then make four targeted clears for Nuwa and three for Fuxi. Several officers also require a battle objective—such as a specific defeat, survival condition, or KO total—so simply finishing stages is not enough. The route below follows the detailed conditions and optimized sequence reported by GuideLVL; difficulty does not change eligibility, according to that guide.
The 2026 remaster combines DYNASTY WARRIORS 3 with DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Xtreme Legends. Nintendo describes a cast of more than 40 officers, while Xtreme Legends adds stories for seven officers, including Lu Bu, Meng Huo, and Yuan Shao. Those are publisher descriptions, not an independently counted roster.

What actually counts toward an unlock?
Use Musou Mode for character progression. The current route guide reports that Free Mode clears do not satisfy the campaign requirements, while the selected difficulty has no effect on whether a condition is accepted. If an officer does not appear after a battle, check that you completed the campaign rather than merely clearing an individual Free Mode stage.

The conditions below are attributed to GuideLVL’s detailed route. Destructoid’s broader unlock table agrees with many entries but differs on some eligibility rules, especially Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi. If your result differs, use the in-game officer records as the immediate check and consult a newly updated guide rather than assuming one table is universally authoritative.

The fastest practical six-run route
This sequence is designed to combine faction-clear requirements with the battles that contain event-gated officers. It produces the 40 regular officers in six campaigns when the listed objectives are completed.

The named officer is a recommended player character, not an additional requirement stated for every unlock in that row. The benefit is that the campaign also visits the stages needed for event-gated characters and supplies the exact officers required later for Nuwa and Fuxi.
Run 1: Xiahou Dun (first Wei campaign)
Start with Xiahou Dun to establish the first Wei clear while handling the early Yellow Turban and Hu Lao Gate objectives. The guide’s reported unlocks are Zhang Jiao, Diao Chan, Lu Bu, Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shao, and Gan Ning during the campaign. Completing the campaign then grants Xu Zhu, Zhen Ji, Sima Yi, and Ziluan.

Run 2: Zhen Ji (second Wei campaign)
Zhen Ji’s campaign supplies the second Wei clear. Finish Musou Mode to receive Cao Cao and Xu Huang according to the route. Using Zhen Ji here also satisfies her own availability requirement and avoids spending a later campaign on a second Wei pass.
Run 3: Zhao Yun (first Shu campaign)
Use Zhao Yun for the first Shu campaign. Keep Pang Tong alive through Assault on Cheng Du and defeat Zhang Ren early; this is the reported Pang Tong condition. During the Nanman Campaign, defeat Meng Huo at all seven appearances and defeat Zhurong before ending the stage. The campaign also reports Xiahou Yuan, Meng Huo, and Zhurong during play, followed by Zhuge Liang, Ma Chao, and Wei Yan after the clear.

Run 4: Gan Ning (first Wu campaign)
Gan Ning’s campaign is recommended because it places the He Fei and Fan Castle objectives on an efficient route. The reported unlocks are Zhang Liao, Sun Quan, and Lu Meng during the campaign, then Lu Xun and Da Qiao after completion.

Run 5: Da Qiao (second Wu campaign)
Play Da Qiao for the second Wu clear. Recruit Taishi Ci at Wu District Conquest by defeating Liu Yong. After the campaign, the route reports Xiao Qiao, Sun Jian, and Sun Ce. This run also counts toward Nuwa’s required Da Qiao clear.
Run 6: Zhuge Liang (second Shu campaign)
Finish the second Shu campaign as Zhuge Liang. The reported post-clear unlocks are Jiang Wei, Liu Bei, and Huang Zhong. Zhuge Liang is recommended because Jiang Wei requires this final Shu campaign progression in the optimized sequence.
Starting officers and faction-based unlocks
The remaster’s initial roster contains nine officers: Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei from Shu; Xiahou Dun, Dian Wei, and Zhang He from Wei; and Zhou Yu, Sun Shangxiang, and Huang Gai from Wu. The following table gives the detailed conditions reported by GuideLVL.

The Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi eligibility wording is the point at which the two current editorial tables most clearly diverge. The exclusions above are the more specific GuideLVL route conditions; they should not be presented as publisher-confirmed rules.
Stage-specific unlocks
These officers are tied to objectives inside particular battles rather than only to a number of faction clears.
Yellow Turban Rebellion: Zhang Jiao
Defeat Zhang Jiao, Zhang Bao, and Zhang Liang in the Yellow Turban Rebellion. The three defeats must occur in that battle; simply clearing a later campaign does not replace the objective.
Hu Lao Gate: Diao Chan, Lu Bu, and Dong Zhuo
Defeat Diao Chan to unlock her. Defeat Lu Bu to unlock him, and reach 1,000 KOs at Hu Lao Gate for the additional Lu Bu condition reported by the route. Defeat both Lu Bu and Diao Chan in the same Hu Lao Gate battle to unlock Dong Zhuo. The route groups these tasks so one carefully managed stage can satisfy all three sets of requirements.

Defeat Yan Liang and Wen Chou yourself before Guan Yu reaches either target. If Guan Yu arrives first, the reported trigger may fail even if the stage is ultimately won.
Assault on Cheng Du and Mt. Ding Jun: Pang Tong and Xiahou Yuan
For Pang Tong, preserve him through Assault on Cheng Du and defeat Zhang Ren early. For Xiahou Yuan, play a Shu Musou campaign and defeat him at Mt. Ding Jun. Zhao Yun’s first Shu run is the recommended opportunity to complete both objectives.
Nanman Campaign: Meng Huo and Zhurong
Meng Huo appears seven times. Defeat him at every appearance, then defeat Zhurong before ending the Nanman Campaign. Do not rush the victory condition after the first Meng Huo encounter; missing one appearance is the usual reason this unlock fails in the optimized route.
He Fei: Zhang Liao and Sun Quan
During a Wu Musou campaign, defeat Zhang Liao at He Fei. For Sun Quan, make Cao Cao retreat at He Fei. Gan Ning’s first Wu campaign is chosen specifically to combine these objectives with the broader Wu progression.
Fan Castle: Lu Meng
Complete Fan Castle without Lu Meng falling. Protecting him is a battle requirement, not merely a recommendation; a victory after his defeat does not satisfy the reported condition.
Wu District Conquest: Taishi Ci
Defeat Liu Yong during Wu District Conquest to recruit Taishi Ci. Da Qiao’s second Wu campaign is the planned run for this event.

These two characters are the final deliberate pass after the regular roster. They are not obtained by a single stage objective.
Nuwa
Clear Musou Mode with all four of these officers:
- Da Qiao
- Xiao Qiao
- Sun Shangxiang
- Zhen Ji
The six-run route already uses Da Qiao and Zhen Ji. Use Xiao Qiao and Sun Shangxiang for the remaining two clears, or substitute additional campaigns only if your in-game records show the required completions.
Fuxi
Clear Musou Mode with each of the following:
- Cao Cao
- Liu Bei
- Sun Jian
Cao Cao and Sun Jian are earned during the six-run sequence; add one Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Jian campaign as needed to ensure the three named records are complete. The guide describes these as five additional runs for Nuwa and Fuxi after the six regular-roster runs, because the exact overlap depends on which prerequisite campaigns you have already counted.
A complete officer checklist
Use this list when checking the roster screen. It separates campaign progression from event objectives so you can identify the missing type of requirement.
- Starting roster: Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Xiahou Dun, Dian Wei, Zhang He, Zhou Yu, Sun Shangxiang, Huang Gai.
- Faction or campaign progression: Zhuge Liang, Ma Chao, Wei Yan, Xu Zhu, Zhen Ji, Sima Yi, Cao Cao, Xu Huang, Lu Xun, Da Qiao, Xiao Qiao, Sun Jian, Sun Ce, Jiang Wei, Liu Bei, Huang Zhong.
- Battle objectives: Zhang Jiao, Diao Chan, Lu Bu, Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shao, Pang Tong, Xiahou Yuan, Zhang Liao, Sun Quan, Lu Meng, Taishi Ci, Meng Huo, Zhurong.
- One-clear general unlock: Ziluan.
- Multi-character secret requirements: Nuwa and Fuxi.
- Additional officers encountered in the route: Gan Ning, Zhuge Liang, Ma Chao, Wei Yan, and the other officers named above become selectable once their individual records are fulfilled.
The publisher’s “more than 40 officers” wording means the complete roster is larger than the 40 regular unlocks counted by the route. The checklist reflects the named conditions available in the current guides rather than an independently audited total.
Troubleshooting missed unlocks
The battle was won, but the officer is still locked
Confirm that the battle occurred in Musou Mode. Free Mode victories do not count for the reported campaign unlocks. Then check whether the objective was performed by your character: Guan Du requires you to defeat Yan Liang and Wen Chou, for example, and Hu Lao Gate requires the specified defeats in the same battle.

An escort target died
For Pang Tong and Lu Meng, survival is part of the condition. Restart or replay the relevant Musou stage while prioritizing their safety; a successful stage clear after the character falls is not equivalent.
One Nanman appearance was missed
Replay the Nanman Campaign and track all seven Meng Huo appearances before triggering the final completion. Defeat Zhurong as well, and do not end the battle immediately after the first successful encounter.
The faction count looks correct but the officer is absent
Check the exact eligibility wording. The detailed route excludes Zhang Fei and Pang Tong for the reported Zhuge Liang trigger and excludes Dian Wei, Zhang Liao, and Zhen Ji for Sima Yi. Those two entries differ in another current table, so verify the in-game unlock record and the guide version you are following.
Nuwa or Fuxi did not appear
Review the named-character list rather than the faction total. Nuwa requires clears with Da Qiao, Xiao Qiao, Sun Shangxiang, and Zhen Ji; Fuxi requires Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Jian. A clear with a different officer from the same faction does not substitute for a missing name.
Platforms and edition notes
The remaster is listed for Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam. Steam lists a Digital Deluxe Edition and notes that costumes, items, and weapons can be changed in preparation menus. None of the unlock conditions above requires a separate accessory or add-on. Retailer stock and regional availability are not established by the unlock guides, so check the storefront serving your region.
Because the official product listing does not publish a character-by-character checklist, the detailed conditions here come from current editorial guides. Treat the six-run sequence as an efficient plan, not as a guarantee that every version, regional release, or future patch will expose the same record wording.
