Red Dead Redemption 2 will meet Rockstar’s published minimum PC baseline if your Windows PC has at least an Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300, 8GB of memory, a GeForce GTX 770 with 2GB of VRAM or Radeon R9 280 with 3GB, and 150GB of storage. Rockstar’s recommended tier raises that baseline to an Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X, 12GB of memory, and a GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB or Radeon RX 480 with 4GB. Neither tier promises a particular resolution, graphics preset, or frame rate, so matching the recommended list does not by itself guarantee 60 FPS or any other target.
Rockstar Games Customer Support last updated its Windows PC requirements article on April 30, 2024. Use it to check the publisher’s listed baseline, then evaluate your own resolution and smoothness goals separately. If you are troubleshooting ERR_GFX_INIT, Rockstar’s support guidance from June 12, 2024 includes driver, settings-file, and graphics-API steps.

Rockstar cautions that downloadable content and programming changes can change system requirements over time. The company’s article states, “Over time downloadable content and programming changes will change the system requirements for this game.” Rockstar also warns that some mobile chipsets, integrated graphics, and AGP cards may be incompatible, and that specifications not listed in its article may not be supported. Treat the table as the official baseline, not a guarantee that every unlisted configuration will work.

The rows are a complete checklist, not a menu of interchangeable strengths. Having a processor that meets the recommended tier does not compensate for a graphics card below the minimum, and extra memory does not make an unsupported graphics adapter compatible. Check each category on its own before deciding whether your PC meets either column.
Can my PC run Red Dead Redemption 2?
Compare your computer with each row of Rockstar’s table rather than relying on a single “gaming PC” label or the name of one component. A system can meet the memory requirement but fall short on graphics, or have a suitable graphics card while lacking enough free storage. Meeting the minimum is different from meeting the recommended configuration.
Check your PC’s components
- Check Windows and memory: Open Settings > System > About. Review the Windows edition and system type, then find the installed RAM and processor details on the same page. The listed operating system in both Rockstar columns is Windows 10 64-bit; do not mistake a 32-bit installation for the listed 64-bit requirement.
- Check the graphics card and VRAM: Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Performance, and choose each listed GPU. Note the GPU model and its dedicated GPU memory. If the computer has more than one GPU, check which models are listed rather than assuming the first one is the only adapter. - Check free storage: Open File Explorer > This PC and review the free space on the drive where you plan to install the game. Rockstar lists 150GB of HDD storage; make sure that much space is available on the intended drive. Looking at the total capacity of the disk is not enough if other files already occupy most of it.
- Compare like with like: Match the CPU model, GPU model and VRAM, memory, and available storage against the minimum and recommended columns. Similar-sounding model names do not establish equivalent performance, and this requirements list does not rank newer cards against the named examples.
Write down the results before making a decision. For example, record the exact CPU name, exact graphics-card name, dedicated VRAM, installed system memory, and free space on the planned installation drive. Then mark each line as meeting the minimum, meeting the recommended example, or not matching the named specifications. This avoids treating a single strong component as proof that the whole PC qualifies.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf you are checking a laptop or compact PC, take Rockstar’s compatibility warning seriously: it specifically notes that some mobile chipsets and integrated graphics may be incompatible. A GPU name or a shared-memory figure alone does not establish that an integrated or mobile device is supported. The article does not provide an exception list or a model-by-model compatibility chart, so it cannot confirm every such system.
The official requirements do not assign resolution, graphics settings, or an FPS target to either tier. They therefore cannot tell you whether a particular PC will deliver a specific frame rate at 1080p, 1440p, or 4K. For a performance prediction, a comparison needs independent testing of the relevant CPU and GPU in the game at stated settings and resolution; the published requirements alone do not supply that evidence.
Is 8GB of RAM enough for RDR2?
Eight gigabytes is the memory figure in Rockstar’s minimum specification, so a PC with 8GB meets that one listed minimum component. It does not meet the 12GB recommended memory figure, and it does not show that the rest of the PC meets minimum requirements. Check the processor, graphics card and VRAM, Windows version, and available storage as well.

Rockstar does not state an FPS or graphics-quality outcome for either 8GB or 12GB in its requirements article. Do not interpret “minimum” as a promise of a particular degree of smoothness, or “recommended” as a guarantee of a specific preset or frame rate. If a PC has 8GB, the accurate conclusion from the published table is limited: it matches the minimum memory line, while falling below the recommended memory figure. The table does not quantify how much performance a memory difference changes.

What the requirements do—and do not—say about performance
Rockstar’s recommended graphics examples are the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and Radeon RX 480 4GB. They are historical examples in a 2024 support article, not present-day purchasing recommendations or a ranking of all cards with similar names. The minimum examples are the GeForce GTX 770 2GB and Radeon R9 280 3GB. Compare the actual model and VRAM listed by your PC; a GPU’s name alone does not tell you the performance of a complete system in a particular game scene.
For a useful comparison between two PCs, record the same five details for both: GPU model and VRAM, CPU model, system memory, free space on the installation drive, and the resolution and image-quality or frame-rate goal. The first four can be checked against Rockstar’s stated configuration. The last is a personal target: the requirements do not translate either tier into a measured result.
That distinction matters when you see a system advertised as “recommended.” In Rockstar’s table, recommended names a hardware tier; it is not a benchmark result. The article does not say that the tier reaches 60 FPS, specify a game preset, or define whether a result is average, minimum, or measured in a particular scene. Avoid converting the word “recommended” into a numerical performance promise.
Rockstar’s 2019 PC-release announcement advertised HDR, support for high-end displays at 4K and beyond, multi-monitor and widescreen configurations, and faster frame rates. That describes features advertised for the PC release; it is not evidence that a particular graphics card can run those display modes at a particular frame rate. A display feature being supported by the PC version and a particular PC rendering it smoothly are separate questions.

Rockstar’s table gives specific examples, but it does not provide a conversion formula for every other component.

Installation, account, and software requirements
Before buying or installing, account for Rockstar’s stated activation and account requirements. Installation and online play require a Rockstar Games account login and an internet connection for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification. A player expecting to complete the first launch entirely offline should plan for the activation requirement rather than assuming the listed PC hardware is the only prerequisite.
Rockstar also lists required software installations: the Rockstar Games platform, DirectX, Chromium, and the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package. These software requirements are separate from the processor, memory, graphics, and storage figures in the table. A PC may match the hardware rows and still need the listed platform or software components installed as part of setup.
Factor in the 150GB storage line when choosing an installation drive. The figure appears for both minimum and recommended configurations, so there is no smaller published storage target for the minimum tier. Check available space on the drive you plan to use, not just the capacity printed on the drive. If the drive is close to full, make room or select another location before beginning installation.

How to fix RDR2 ERR_GFX_INIT
Rockstar’s support article, last updated June 12, 2024, identifies three troubleshooting options for “Failed to initialize graphics device”: make sure graphics drivers are current, reset the game’s settings files, or change the graphics API between Vulkan and DirectX 12 in the Advanced Graphics settings in system.xml. Rockstar summarizes its guidance this way: “To resolve this issue, you can make sure you have the latest graphics drivers installed, delete your Red Dead Redemption 2 settings files to reset your game settings, or change your Advanced Graphics settings in the system.xml file.” Take these steps carefully, changing one thing at a time so you can identify and reverse a change that does not help.
1. Check graphics drivers
Confirm that the graphics driver for the GPU you intend to use is current. If your PC has more than one graphics adapter, identify the relevant adapter before changing its driver. Restart the game after updating and check whether the initialization error remains. Rockstar’s cited guidance calls for current graphics drivers; it does not recommend a third-party driver utility.

Keep this step focused on the graphics driver rather than changing several unrelated settings at once. If the error continues, note that result and proceed to the settings-file or API option. The point of changing one thing at a time is to make it clear which action, if any, affected startup.
2. Reset settings files cautiously
Close both the game and its launcher before resetting settings files. Rockstar gives the default settings directory as DocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Settings. Before removing files, make a copy of the folder somewhere safe so you can restore the previous configuration if needed. Do not delete system.xml as part of this procedure: Rockstar’s API-switching instructions use that file. If you are unsure which files to reset, preserve system.xml and avoid removing files beyond the settings reset you intend to perform.
After resetting settings, start the game and see whether the initialization error is resolved before changing the API too. A reset can discard the existing graphics configuration, which is why keeping a backup is a useful precaution. If you need to undo the reset, close the game and restore the saved files rather than trying to remember every previous setting.
3. Switch Vulkan and DirectX 12
- Close Red Dead Redemption 2 and the launcher.
- Open
DocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Settingssystem.xmlin a text editor and make a backup copy before editing. - Locate the graphics API value associated with Advanced Graphics and change it from Vulkan to DirectX 12, or from DirectX 12 to Vulkan. Record the original value so you can restore it.
- Save the file, then delete files beginning with
sga_in the Settings folder if any are present, as Rockstar instructs after an API change. - Launch the game and check whether it starts. If the error persists or the change makes things worse, close the game and restore the backed-up
system.xmlor try the other API.
Switching APIs is a troubleshooting option, not a universal performance fix. Rockstar’s instructions support trying the other API to address this initialization error; they do not establish that Vulkan or DirectX 12 is faster or more reliable on every GPU and configuration. Do not switch APIs solely on the assumption that one is always better. Record the original value, make one change, and keep the option to reverse it.
Does RDR2 require an SSD?
No SSD requirement appears in Rockstar’s published table: both the minimum and recommended rows specify a 150GB HDD. The table identifies storage capacity and drive type as Rockstar lists them; it does not claim that an SSD is required or that choosing one raises FPS. If choosing a drive, make sure the installation location has the stated available capacity and distinguish a storage choice from a graphics-performance promise.

- Verify Windows edition and 64-bit system type against the listed Windows 10 64-bit requirement.
- Compare the exact CPU model with the minimum and recommended processor examples.
- Compare the exact discrete GPU model and its VRAM with the listed graphics examples; heed Rockstar’s warning about some mobile chipsets and integrated graphics.
- Check that system memory is at least 8GB for the listed minimum, and note that the recommended figure is 12GB.
- Confirm that 150GB is available on the drive you intend to use.
- Plan for a Rockstar Games account login and internet access for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification.
- Expect the Rockstar Games platform and listed supporting software to be part of the installation requirements.
- Set a realistic performance question separately: the official table does not say what resolution, preset, or FPS either tier achieves.
If any of the first five checks does not match the minimum column, Rockstar’s table does not establish that the PC meets the published minimum configuration. If all do match, that is a match to the listed baseline, not a guarantee that every unlisted component is supported or that the game will deliver a chosen frame rate. For a specific FPS estimate, look for a reproducible test that identifies the game version, CPU, GPU, resolution, settings, and test scene rather than relying on the requirements table alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can my PC run Red Dead Redemption 2?
Compare your Windows version, CPU, GPU and VRAM, system memory, and free installation-drive space with Rockstar’s requirements. The minimum list is Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300, 8GB RAM, a GTX 770 2GB or Radeon R9 280 3GB, and 150GB HDD storage. Matching the baseline does not promise a particular FPS or confirm every unlisted configuration.
What are the recommended PC requirements for RDR2?
Rockstar lists Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X, 12GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB VRAM or Radeon RX 480 with 4GB VRAM, and 150GB HDD storage. Rockstar’s April 30, 2024 support article does not attach a resolution, preset, or frame-rate target to these specifications.
Can I run RDR2 with 8GB RAM?
Eight gigabytes matches Rockstar’s minimum memory figure, but the recommended figure is 12GB. It only answers the memory part of the compatibility check; your operating system, CPU, GPU and VRAM, and available storage must be checked separately. Rockstar does not state what FPS 8GB will deliver.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does RDR2 require an SSD?
Rockstar lists 150GB HDD storage for both minimum and recommended specifications and does not list an SSD as required. An SSD is an optional storage choice, not an official requirement or a published FPS upgrade.
How do I fix ERR_GFX_INIT in Red Dead Redemption 2?
Rockstar’s June 12, 2024 guidance suggests making sure graphics drivers are current, resetting settings files after closing the game and launcher, or changing the graphics API between Vulkan and DirectX 12 in Advanced Graphics settings in system.xml. Back up settings before editing, and delete files beginning with sga_ after an API change if present. The API change is a troubleshooting option, not a universal performance winner.
Does Rockstar guarantee 60 FPS on the recommended PC?
No. Rockstar’s requirements article gives hardware examples but does not promise 60 FPS, specify a resolution, or identify a graphics preset. A frame-rate estimate requires a relevant benchmark with the tested hardware, game version, settings, resolution, and scene identified.
Can I play RDR2 offline on first launch?
Rockstar says installation and online play require a Rockstar Games account login and an internet connection for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification. Plan for internet access for activation rather than assuming that the hardware list is the only prerequisite.
The Bottom Line
Use Rockstar’s April 30, 2024 specification table to compare every component, not just the GPU or RAM. The minimum is 8GB memory and the listed GTX 770/R9 280 graphics class; the recommended example rises to 12GB and GTX 1060/RX 480 class, with 150GB HDD storage in both columns. Neither tier guarantees a particular FPS, resolution, or settings preset. Account for Rockstar login and activation requirements, and use the June 12, 2024 support steps for ERR_GFX_INIT one at a time, preserving a backup before editing settings.
