Steam Deck Memory Requirements: How Much RAM Do Handheld PC Games Need?

Steam Deck OLED has 16GB of unified LPDDR5 memory. Here is what Valve’s GPU-allocation explanation means, why Windows RAM requirements are only clues, and how to use Steam Deck compatibility ratings without inventing a universal cutoff.

Every Steam Deck OLED has 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5 memory. It is a unified pool shared by the processor and integrated graphics, not 16 GB of system RAM plus a separate, additional 8 GB VRAM pool. Valve says the GPU can access up to 8 GB of that same memory depending on the workload.

That means a game’s Windows RAM requirement is useful context, but it cannot by itself predict how well the game will run on Steam Deck. Check the title’s Steam Deck compatibility rating, its SteamOS or Linux requirements, and any developer notes alongside the memory number.

How much memory does the Steam Deck have?

Steam Deck OLED specification

Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED with 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5 memory running at 6400 MT/s. The specification applies to the OLED model described on Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications page. The memory is built into the device rather than presented as a user-selectable system-RAM module.

The OLED’s APU is a 6 nm AMD design with Zen 2 CPU cores and RDNA 2 graphics. Because the graphics processor is integrated into the APU, the CPU and GPU draw from the same physical memory pool. This is why the Deck’s memory description differs from a desktop PC with separate system RAM and a discrete graphics card’s VRAM.

Unified memory is one pool

Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ describes the configuration as 16 GB of unified memory. It says 1 GB is dedicated for GPU use, while the GPU can access up to 8 GB depending on the workload, with the allocation able to change from game to game. The 1 GB and 8 GB figures describe portions or access within the 16 GB pool; they must not be added to 16 GB to claim that the Deck has 24 GB.

Valve’s FAQ states: “Steam Deck has 16 gigabyte of unified memory. One gigabyte that’s dedicated for the GPU, but depending on workload the GPU can access up to 8 GB.” It also says that more than 1 GB is available to the GPU and that up to 8 GB can be shared on a game-by-game basis.

For the official explanation, see the Steam Deck FAQ. The important practical point is that CPU data, game assets and graphics data compete for a finite 16 GB resource. The split is dynamic rather than a fixed 16 GB-plus-8 GB arrangement.

Term What it means on Steam Deck What it does not mean
16 GB LPDDR5 The total physical onboard memory listed for Steam Deck OLED. It is not 16 GB of system RAM in addition to a separate VRAM chip.
Unified memory CPU and integrated GPU use the same physical pool. It does not guarantee that every game receives the same CPU/GPU split.
1 GB dedicated for GPU use Valve’s baseline description of GPU allocation. It is not extra memory beyond the 16 GB total.
GPU access up to 8 GB A workload-dependent maximum access figure cited by Valve. It is not a fixed 8 GB VRAM pool and is not added to the device total.

What a game’s RAM requirement actually tells you

Steam store pages commonly publish minimum and recommended requirements for Windows. A listing might say that a game needs 8 GB of RAM at minimum or recommends 16 GB, but that number describes the publisher’s stated requirement for the listed operating system and build. It is not a measurement of the game’s SteamOS or Proton memory use.

SteamOS is based on Arch Linux, as Valve explains on its SteamOS page. Different operating-system builds, translation layers, launchers, drivers and settings can change memory behavior. A Windows minimum therefore cannot establish a universal Steam Deck cutoff, and a Windows recommendation is not a guarantee that the game will deliver a particular frame rate on the handheld.

Can a Steam Deck run a game that requires 16 GB?

Possibly, but the requirement alone does not answer the question. A title with a 16 GB Windows recommendation may run acceptably on the Deck, require compromises, or fail for an unrelated compatibility reason. Conversely, a game listing only 8 GB may still have controller, launcher, text-legibility or performance problems on the device.

Use the RAM figure as one signal of how demanding the game may be. Then verify the Steam Deck rating, read the listing’s platform-specific information, and look for developer notes or recent reports that identify known issues. Keep those evidence types separate: none is a disclosed game-by-game measurement of how much of the Deck’s 16 GB pool the title consumes.

Example: Fading Faith

The Fading Faith Steam listing illustrates why storefront fields need careful reading. Its Windows section lists 8 GB of minimum memory and 16 GB of recommended memory. In its SteamOS/Linux section, the operating system, processor, graphics and sound-card fields are labelled “SteamDeck” rather than giving a separate numeric Linux RAM requirement.

That presentation is evidence about one listing, not a rule for every game. It shows that a Windows memory table and a Deck-specific platform designation can coexist without providing a direct Steam Deck RAM measurement.

What the Steam Deck compatibility badge covers

Valve reviews games against a broader set of handheld-use criteria and translates the result into a customer-facing badge. The review considers controls, text input, resolution and text legibility, launchers, and performance, among other practical checks. Details are documented in Valve’s Steam Deck and Steam Machine Compatibility Review.

Badge Valve’s meaning How to use it for memory questions
Verified The game passes the listed compatibility checks without configuration work. A strong signal that the overall Deck experience meets Valve’s criteria, but not a published RAM-use score.
Playable The game functions but may require manual user work. Read the noted adjustments; a configuration step may concern controls, input, display or launch behavior rather than memory.
Unsupported The game does not function because of incompatibility with Proton or specific hardware components. Do not assume the reason is insufficient RAM. The badge covers many kinds of incompatibility.
Unknown The game has not completed Valve’s review. Absence of a rating is not evidence that the game is memory-safe or memory-heavy.

Verified is therefore not shorthand for “uses less than a particular number of gigabytes.” It is an overall compatibility judgment. Playable does not identify a universal performance target either; the listing’s notes and the game’s own requirements still matter.

A practical way to judge a game before installing it

  1. Confirm the device and model. The cited Valve specification is for Steam Deck OLED and lists 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5. Do not silently apply an OLED specification to an unrelated handheld PC.
  2. Read the complete Steam listing. Record the minimum and recommended memory figures, operating system, processor and graphics requirements. Note whether the publisher provides a SteamOS/Linux section or only Windows requirements.
  3. Check the Deck badge. Treat Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown as whole-experience ratings, not as RAM measurements. Open the detailed compatibility notes when they are available.
  4. Separate memory concerns from other limits. A game can fail because of anti-cheat, a launcher, controls, text scaling, unsupported hardware or Proton behavior even when its listed RAM requirement looks modest.
  5. Look for title-specific evidence. Developer-published Deck notes and current community reports can clarify settings or known issues. Keep such observations tied to that game and version rather than turning them into a universal memory threshold.
  6. Plan storage separately. A microSD card expands storage for game files; it does not increase the Deck’s physical RAM or the GPU’s memory access.

Common Steam Deck memory misconceptions

  • “The Deck has 16 GB RAM plus 8 GB VRAM.” Incorrect. Valve describes 16 GB of unified memory and says the GPU can access up to 8 GB of that pool depending on workload.
  • “Any game requiring 16 GB will not run.” Not established. Windows requirements are clues, not a universal SteamOS/Proton compatibility test.
  • “Verified means the game passed a RAM test.” The badge reflects controls, text input, display, launchers, performance and other checks; Valve does not present it as a memory-use grade.
  • “A microSD card upgrades RAM.” It adds storage capacity only.
  • “The onboard RAM can be upgraded by the owner.” Valve’s product specification identifies onboard memory but the reviewed material does not document a user-accessible RAM-upgrade path. That is an evidence limit, not a claim that every repair or modification is impossible.
  • “All games use the same GPU allocation.” Valve explicitly describes GPU access as workload-dependent and changeable by game.

What is and is not known about a universal RAM threshold

Valve’s published material establishes the device capacity and the unified-memory model, but it does not publish a single RAM number that predicts every game’s Steam Deck performance. It also does not provide a representative game-by-game series of measured Deck memory requirements.

As a result, a statement such as “games above X GB need more RAM than the Deck has” would overstate the available evidence. Requirements vary with the game engine, assets, resolution, settings, operating-system build and compatibility layer. The defensible approach is title-by-title: combine the published requirements with the compatibility badge and the game’s Deck-specific information.

How to discuss Steam Deck memory accurately

When comparing a game’s requirement with the Deck, identify the platform and the model first. Say “Steam Deck OLED has 16 GB of unified LPDDR5 memory” rather than “16 GB system RAM and 8 GB VRAM.” If you mention GPU access, state that Valve describes up to 8 GB depending on workload and that it comes from the same pool.

Keep three questions distinct:

  • Capacity: how much physical memory the device has.
  • Allocation: how the unified pool is shared between CPU and GPU for a particular workload.
  • Compatibility: whether the complete game experience works with the Deck’s controls, display, software stack and performance expectations.

Those questions interact, but no single storefront number answers all three. A careful recommendation names the evidence it relies on and avoids turning a Windows requirement or a compatibility badge into a fabricated RAM benchmark.
