Fast travel in Valor Mortis unlocks after you defeat General Lothaire in his Chapter 2 rematch outside the Abandoned Church, then rest at the Lantern inside the church. Defeating Lothaire alone is not enough. After that rest, the Lantern menu gains TRAVEL, letting you move between Lanterns you have discovered and, when available, return directly to the Abandoned Church.
When can you teleport between Lanterns?
The travel network becomes available only after the Chapter 2 rematch with General Lothaire. The earlier battlefield encounter is a separate fight and does not unlock the feature.

- Defeat General Lothaire outside the Abandoned Church.
- Enter the Abandoned Church after the battle.
- Walk to the Lantern and choose REST.
On the first rest, the game displays the tutorial, “You can freely travel between any discovered Lanterns.” The Lantern menu then places TRAVEL beneath LEVEL UP. The same Lantern interface also supports character leveling and Ferrofluid Flask upgrades.
How do I use the Travel menu?
Once the feature is unlocked, every Lantern you have lit or rekindled can serve as a departure point. Travel is immediate when you select a destination; there is no separate confirmation prompt.

- Rest at any activated Lantern.
- Select TRAVEL, the second row below LEVEL UP.
- Switch regions with the tabs at the top of the “Travel to the Lantern” screen. The detailed guide assigns Q and E to tab switching.
- Choose a Lantern you have already discovered in that region.
Your current beacon is marked Current location. When the option is available, press F — RETURN TO THE ABANDONED CHURCH to go back to the church without selecting a separate regional destination.
Which Lanterns can I use as destinations?
A Lantern must be activated before it appears in the travel list. Passing a checkpoint or walking near it does not add it to the network, so interact with each Lantern you intend to use as a return point.

Prison and Entropy are listed as story-locked areas, so they do not appear in the normal travel list even after their associated quests.
Why is the Travel option missing at the Abandoned Church?
The documented trigger is resting at the church Lantern, not merely entering the building. If the menu still shows only the ordinary options, interact with the Lantern and select REST after the Lothaire rematch.

- You have not completed the correct fight: the opening battlefield encounter does not count; finish the Chapter 2 rematch.
- You entered but did not rest: return to the Lantern and use the REST interaction.
- A destination is absent: revisit that Lantern and activate it. Only discovered beacons are listed.
- The church doors remain unavailable: one reported progression case was resolved by speaking with James. This is a specific progression issue, not a universal replacement for the normal unlock sequence.
Why can’t I fast-travel during this part of the story?
Travel can be disabled temporarily while a boss encounter or certain late-story sequences are active. These restrictions do not necessarily mean that a region or quest has been permanently removed.
During a boss encounter
When a boss health bar is present, Lantern resting and travel may be unavailable. Finish the encounter, die, or surrender the encounter before trying the Lantern again.

During a late-story sequence
Some story segments impose a temporary travel lock. Continue the active sequence and check the Lantern after the restriction ends rather than assuming that all remaining quests are lost.

After unlocking the network, open the region tabs in the Travel screen and select any activated Lantern in the target area, including one in the Valley of Ashes. The system is designed for Metroidvania-style backtracking: later traversal abilities can make previously visited zones worth revisiting.

Useful reasons to backtrack
- The Grapple can open routes and loot that were unreachable on an earlier visit.

- Returning to the Abandoned Church lets you spend Catalysts and improve equipment before teleporting back to your exploration area.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the first Lothaire fight unlock fast travel?
No. The battlefield encounter near the start of the game is separate from the Chapter 2 rematch that enables the Lantern network. You must complete the later rematch and then perform the church Lantern rest.
Can I return to the Abandoned Church from every Lantern?
The Lantern screen can show a dedicated “RETURN TO THE ABANDONED CHURCH” command, assigned to F in the guide. It appears when that return route is available, alongside the regional destination list.

Visibility is not the requirement; activation is. Reach the beacon and interact with it so it is lit or rekindled, then reopen the Travel menu to add it to the selectable destinations.
Are Prison and Entropy bugs if they never appear on the map?
No. The guide identifies both as story-locked exceptions to the revisitable-region list. Their omission from the ordinary Lantern travel tabs is therefore expected.
