To unlock the special-item armor recipes in Monster Hunter Wilds, reach High Rank, obtain each set’s associated special item through an Item Trade or Material Retrieval, then check the Smithy. Low Rank trade access alone is not enough. The original guide list names 12 sets even though its headline says 11, so treat the list below as a source-reported set of recipes—not a verified count of every armor set in the current game.
How the hidden armor unlock works
- Progress into High Rank. The special materials in the original hidden-set list are High Rank-only. The separate layered-armor system has an earlier milestone: PC Gamer’s guide says it becomes available after the Yian Kut-Ku milestone and speaking with Gemma. That milestone does not reveal every special-item recipe. PC Gamer’s hidden armor guide and layered armor guide.
- Open up Material Retrieval. Complete the relevant regional village quests, then ask Nata at Base Camp about gathered materials. Retrieval results can be random; Nata is also a central contact for collected materials and trades. See Destructoid’s guide and the PlayStation endgame guide.
- Check Item Trade offers. Visit settlement traders and review their current offers. The guides describe availability as intermittent or random, not a guaranteed item on a fixed day. Check again regularly rather than relying on an assumed rotation. PC Gamer’s guide.
- Pick up the special item, then visit the Smithy. Obtaining the item reveals its associated armor recipe. Great Hibiscus, for example, is reported to reveal Melahoa. Destructoid’s guide.
Source-reported hidden sets and required items
The detailed February 27, 2025 PC Gamer guide supplies the following set and item map. Its reported total is inconsistent: the headline says 11, while the visible list names 12. Treat uncertain acquisition routes below as possibilities reported by that guide, not guaranteed ways to obtain an item.

Armor recipes, layered appearances, and bonus cosmetics are different
- Recipe discovery: obtaining a special item reveals the corresponding Smithy recipe.
- Layered appearance: PC Gamer’s general guide says crafting High Rank armor unlocks its layered appearance. This is separate from discovering a recipe.
- Claimable add-on cosmetics: these use a different flow. For the Guild Knight pre-order bonus, Capcom Support says to claim the add-on through Support Desk Palico > Claim Content, then use the tent’s Appearance Menu > Equipment Appearance. See Capcom Support.
Does this cover every armor set in the current game?
No. The list above is limited to special-item or hidden recipes covered by the original guide, and its 11-set headline conflicts with the 12 names shown in its list. It does not establish a complete current catalog. Later updates added armor: PlayStation’s June 26, 2025 update article, for example, says Lagiacrus materials yield new hunter and Palico armor that can be used as layered armor. No region-wide or platform-specific difference in the hidden-item list is established by these sources. For an exhaustive count, use the Smithy recipes in your current game version and distinguish special-item recipes from later update armor and claimable add-on cosmetics.
