What “unlocking a species” actually means
The phrase can describe three different things, and confusing them causes most of the frustration:
- Researching a species: a vet works from a Research Centre to increase your zoo’s knowledge of that animal.
- Making an animal eligible for a transaction: an animal in the Trade Centre can be released to the wild or traded in Franchise mode.
- Buying a species: you spend Conservation Credits or cash on an animal currently listed in the Franchise market.
Frontier’s published Planet Zoo guidance connects research with knowledge, education and animal value. It does not describe research as a separate currency or a universal species-unlock command. The documented sequence is therefore research, breed or otherwise manage animals, move eligible animals through the Trade Centre, release or trade them, and use the resulting resources to obtain animals available in your Franchise market.

That distinction matters for the title’s “Planet Zoo 2” wording. The official material available for these mechanics is for Planet Zoo. An unofficial sequel wiki is not confirmation of a Planet Zoo 2 research tree, reserve system, species gate or credit rule. Do not treat fan-made sequel pages as instructions for a released game.
Which game mode supports Conservation Credits?
Conservation Credits belong to the Franchise animal economy. The same animals, research screens and facilities can look familiar in other modes, but the credit loop is not interchangeable with every mode’s economy.

If you are playing Career, Challenge or Sandbox and cannot see a Conservation Credit balance or Franchise animal market, that is normally a mode mismatch, not a failed research task.

How to start species research
1. Build the correct facility
Place a Research Centre in the zoo. Frontier’s building guidance describes this facility as the place where vets further the zoo’s knowledge about animals. The small Research Centre accommodates one staff member; the large Research Centre accommodates six. Those capacities are staff slots, not a promise that a species is unlocked after a fixed number of projects.
2. Hire or assign a vet
A vet is the staff role used for animal research. Open the staff or facility assignment controls, select the Research Centre, and assign an available vet. If every vet is already tied up with other work, research can wait until one is available or you hire another. A keeper, educator or mechanic cannot substitute for the vet role described in Frontier’s guide.
3. Choose a species to research
From the vet’s research interface, select a species represented in your zoo and start its research. The interface and exact labels may differ by platform or update, so use the species list and the Research Centre’s own assignment panel rather than relying on a sequel-specific menu described by an unofficial source.

4. Keep the vet available
Research is a staff activity. If you repeatedly reassign the vet to veterinary emergencies, quarantine work or other duties, progress can stop until the vet returns. A larger Research Centre allows six staff members, which is useful when you want several vets working without forcing every project through one slot; it does not change the documented purpose of research.

What research changes
Frontier attributes three practical benefits to higher species research:
- Knowledge: your zoo learns more about the researched animal.
- Education: better species knowledge improves the educational benefit associated with that animal.
- Animal value: higher research levels contribute to greater value when an eligible animal is released or traded.
These benefits are not the same as a guarantee that a completely new species will appear in the market. The official descriptions do not state that completing a research level alone creates a species listing, mints Conservation Credits, or bypasses the Franchise market’s availability.
How Conservation Credits are earned in Franchise
Release an eligible animal
Animals held in the Trade Centre can be released to the wild in Franchise mode. The release action awards Conservation Credits according to the game’s animal-economy rules. Frontier specifically notes that higher species research contributes greater release value, so researching the species before release can improve the value assigned to an eligible animal. The cited guidance does not provide a universal credit-per-animal rate; the amount can depend on the animal and its attributes.
Trade an eligible animal
The same Trade Centre population can be traded for cash or Conservation Credits in Franchise mode. Trading is a market transaction, while releasing is a release-to-the-wild transaction; choose the destination shown by the interface and read the offered return before confirming. Research raises the animal’s value contribution, but it does not turn every animal into a guaranteed high-credit listing.
Spend credits on an available animal
Open the Franchise animal market and filter or search for the species you want. If a listing is present, inspect its price and animal details, then purchase it with Conservation Credits when that is the listed currency. A species that is absent, sold out or priced beyond your balance is not made available merely because your vet finished research.

A practical research-to-species loop
- Choose Franchise mode. Confirm that you are in the mode with the Conservation Credit market, not a Career, Challenge or Sandbox zoo.
- Place a Research Centre. Use the small centre for one staff member or the large centre for up to six.
- Assign a vet. Make sure the vet is available for research rather than continuously assigned to other duties.
- Research species you actually keep. The documented system concerns your zoo’s species knowledge; it is not a general research-tree unlock for every animal.
- Manage healthy animals in the Trade Centre. Keep animals you need for welfare, breeding or exhibit plans, and identify animals that are eligible for a release or trade.
- Check the transaction preview. Before confirming, note whether the action pays cash or Conservation Credits and what value the game offers.
- Release or trade selected animals. Use the documented Trade Centre actions to build your Conservation Credit balance.
- Return to the Franchise market. Spend credits on a species listing that is actually available, rather than expecting research completion to create one.
- Repeat selectively. Continue researching species that contribute to your education goals and improve the value of animals you plan to move through the Trade Centre.
This loop is an economy and management cycle, not a one-click species unlock. It also avoids wasting a valuable animal: research and animal-care decisions come before the release or trade confirmation.
Are Conservation Credits shared between Franchise zoos?
Yes. Frontier’s game-mode guidance states that Conservation Credits are shared between all the zoos in your Franchise, while cash is not. A credit earned in one zoo can therefore be available when you switch to another zoo inside the same Franchise. Cash remains handled separately for each zoo.

“Shared” applies within the same Franchise. It does not mean that credits transfer to a different player account, a different game mode or an unrelated Franchise.
Do you need to fully research an animal before buying it?
No documented Frontier instruction says that a species must be fully researched before you can buy it in the Franchise market. Research affects knowledge, education and the value of animals you release or trade. Market access is a separate question: the animal must be listed, and you must meet the listing’s currency and price requirements.
Research can still be worthwhile before a purchase. Once the animal is in your zoo, additional knowledge can improve the educational value associated with it, and research can increase the value of animals from that species that you later release or trade. That is a management benefit, not a stated purchase prerequisite.
Why a species may seem locked
You are in the wrong mode
Only Franchise’s documented economy provides the Conservation Credit path described here. In another mode, the species may be controlled by scenario objectives, challenge progression or sandbox settings instead.

The species is not currently listed
Researching one species does not force the market to display every other species. Refresh the market according to the controls available in your version, inspect the available listings and check whether the desired animal is temporarily absent.
You are looking at the wrong currency
Some listings use cash and others use Conservation Credits. Confirm the currency icon and your balance before assuming that research failed. Cash and credits are separate resources, and only credits are shared across your Franchise zoos.
Your vet is not assigned or is occupied
A Research Centre without an assigned vet cannot perform the documented research task. An assigned vet who is continuously diverted to other work may also leave research inactive. Reopen the facility assignment panel and verify both the staff member and the current task.
The animal is not in the Trade Centre
Release and trade actions described by Frontier apply to animals held in the Trade Centre. If an animal is still in an exhibit, habitat or another management state, move it into the Trade Centre when the game allows, then inspect the available actions.
You are relying on a Planet Zoo 2 fan guide
Unofficial sequel pages may describe research trees, reserve gates or unlock currencies that Frontier has not confirmed. If a claimed button, level requirement or species gate does not exist in your build, treat the claim as unverified rather than repeatedly rebuilding your zoo around it.

How to improve credit income without inventing a “fast farm”
No official source in the documented material publishes a fixed Conservation Credit rate, guaranteed payout or fastest species. That means a responsible strategy focuses on controllable decisions rather than a fabricated credits-per-minute target.

- Research before disposition. Because higher research contributes greater release or trade value, schedule research before moving an animal you already know you will not keep.
- Use the Trade Centre deliberately. Separate animals intended for breeding or welfare plans from animals intended for release or trade so that a rushed sale does not damage your management plan.
- Compare the previewed return. The game shows whether a transaction pays cash or credits and what value it offers; choose the resource you actually need.
- Concentrate staff capacity. A large Research Centre supports up to six staff members, reducing the need to queue every research project through a single slot.
- Maintain a healthy education program. Research improves educational benefit, so species knowledge can serve your zoo even when you are saving credits rather than selling animals.
- Use shared credits strategically. Since credits are shared across your Franchise, earn them where animal management is convenient and spend them in the zoo where the desired listing fits your plan.
These choices can make the loop more efficient, but none creates a guaranteed payout. Animal attributes, listing availability and the current market determine the result shown in your game.
Research Centre capacity and staffing choices
