Update a Bukkit-compatible plugin safely by checking its release notes and dependencies, backing up your worlds and server files, stopping the server, replacing the old plugin JAR with one compatible release, restarting, and checking the console and /plugins list. Paper servers can stage a replacement in plugins/update, but that still requires a restart and verification. Keep the plugin’s data folder unless the release notes call for a migration, and restore the previous JAR and configuration from your backup if the update fails.
What is the safest way to update a Bukkit plugin?
The safest workflow is deliberately conservative: identify the server and installed plugin version, read the author’s current release notes, make a usable backup, stop the server cleanly, install exactly one compatible JAR, restart, and inspect the startup output before players return. This sequence works for Bukkit-compatible implementations such as Paper and Spigot, whether the server runs on your own machine or through a hosting panel.

Do not overwrite a plugin JAR while the server is running. Paper’s documentation states, “Don’t replace any JAR in a running server.” A live process may still have the file open, may write plugin data at shutdown, and cannot reliably load the replacement until the next startup.
What should I check before downloading an update?
Confirm that the specific release supports your Minecraft version and server implementation, then check every dependency and migration note on the plugin author’s official download or release page. A file that has the right plugin name can still target a different game version, loader, or API.

Record the current installation
- Note whether the server is Paper, Spigot, or another Bukkit-compatible implementation.
- Write down the Minecraft version and the plugin’s installed version. The version is often visible in the startup log, the hosting panel, or the plugin’s own information command.
- List companion plugins that integrate with the plugin, such as permission, economy, protection, chat, or database components.
- Check whether the plugin is a Bukkit/Spigot/Paper JAR. Do not upload a file intended for Fabric or Forge.
Read the release notes, not just the filename
Look for the supported Minecraft and server versions, minimum API requirements, required dependencies, library plugins, Java requirements stated by the author, configuration changes, data migrations, and any required order of updates. Some releases require an intermediate version or a separate dependency update. If the notes do not clearly support your server version, pause rather than guessing.
Verify the source
Paper advises, “Ensure you fully trust the source of any plugin before installing it.” Plugins have unrestricted access to the server and the machine running it. Download from the author’s official page or a recognized repository, verify that the file is the expected JAR, and avoid repackaged copies from unknown uploaders.
What files should I back up before changing a plugin?
Back up the worlds, server configuration, plugin configuration, and plugin JARs before touching the installation. The copy must be usable for a rollback, not merely a screenshot or a record of filenames.
Include these locations
- World folders: the overworld and any Nether or End world directories configured by the server.
- Server settings: files such as
server.properties, permissions or operator lists, and other files that control the instance. - Plugin data: the relevant plugin folder under
plugins, including YAML, JSON, database, language, cache, and generated files. - Plugin JARs: the currently installed JAR and, when practical, the other JARs in
pluginsso the server can be restored as a known set.
Paper’s guidance is blunt: “Having functioning backups is essential to every server, big or small.” Copy the backup to storage separate from the live server, label it with the date and versions, and confirm that the files can actually be opened or restored. A host’s automatic snapshot is useful only if you know how to retrieve it and what it contains.
Make the rollback boundary clear
Finish the backup before uploading the new file. Keep the old JAR unchanged until the new version has started successfully and the plugin’s important functions have been checked. If the release requires a configuration migration, preserve the original configuration separately instead of allowing a failed conversion to overwrite your only copy.
How do I stop the server correctly?
Use the server console’s stop command or the hosting panel’s normal stop control, then wait until the process has finished saving and the panel reports that it is offline. Do not kill the process or close the terminal while worlds are saving unless the server is already unresponsive and you have accepted the risk of corruption.

- Warn players about the maintenance window and save any work in progress.
- Run
stopin the server console, or choose the panel’s graceful stop action. - Wait for the final save and shutdown messages.
- Confirm that no Java server process is still running before editing files.
A restart is required after either installation method. Bukkit plugins are loaded during startup; placing a JAR on disk does not hot-load it into an already running process.
How do I replace a plugin JAR manually?
Manual replacement gives you direct control over the files. With the server stopped, move the old JAR out of the active plugins folder, upload the compatible replacement there, and make sure only one copy of that plugin remains.
- Open the server’s root
pluginsdirectory through the panel file manager, SFTP, or local file browser. - Identify the existing plugin JAR by its filename and the version you recorded. Move it to a dated backup directory outside
plugins, or retain it in your separate backup. - Upload the new
.jardirectly into the rootpluginsdirectory. Do not leave it inside a ZIP archive or an extra nested folder. - Check the directory for duplicate versions, renamed copies, or old files with a different capitalization. Remove or move every obsolete copy so the server sees one active JAR for that plugin.
- Leave the plugin’s data directory in place unless the release notes explicitly require a migration or a clean configuration.
- Start the server and follow the verification procedure below.
Do not delete the data folder as a routine update step. It normally contains the settings, permissions, databases, and player data that the new JAR needs. Deleting it can reset the plugin or destroy data; only change it when the author documents the required procedure, and keep the original folder in your backup.

On Paper, you can stage a replacement JAR in plugins/update while the server is offline. Paper processes staged files at the next restart, moving the replacement into the active plugin location according to its update-folder behavior. The folder is a staging mechanism, not a live reload system.
- Stop the server cleanly and make the backup.
- Create
plugins/updateif it does not already exist. - Place the compatible replacement JAR in that folder. Use the exact file supplied by the plugin author.
- Do not stage unrelated or unverified files in the same maintenance operation.
- Restart the server and watch the console for the update and plugin enable messages.
- Run
/pluginsin game orpluginsin the console and inspect the logs.
The update folder is convenient when several planned replacements are prepared for one maintenance window, while manual replacement is often clearer for a single change. In both cases, the old file should remain recoverable and the server must be restarted.
| Consideration | Manual replacement | plugins/update on Paper |
|---|---|---|
| Where the new file goes | Root plugins directory after the old JAR is moved |

| Server state while changing files | Stopped | Stopped |

How do I verify that the updated plugin loaded?
Verification has three parts: confirm the version and enable message in startup output, check the plugin list, and exercise the functions that matter to your players or integrations. A server that reaches the title screen is not proof that every plugin loaded correctly.

Read the startup console and log
Watch the console during startup and open logs/latest.log if the output scrolls past. Look for the plugin’s load and enable messages, dependency warnings, invalid-plugin errors, unsupported-version messages, and stack traces. Investigate the first relevant error rather than jumping to the last line of a long cascade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the plugin list
Run /plugins in game with the required permission, or type plugins in the server console. A normally loaded plugin appears in the enabled list; a red or missing entry indicates that it did not enable. The list confirms loading status, not whether a configuration migration or an integration is functioning.
Exercise the important functions
- Run the plugin’s primary commands and confirm that permissions still work.
- Check integrations named in the release notes, such as protection, economy, chat, database, or proxy connections.
- Trigger scheduled tasks or player-facing features that the update changes.
- Check for newly generated configuration files and compare them with the release notes before editing values.
Keep the maintenance window open until these checks pass. If the plugin is optional and fails, disable the affected feature rather than allowing repeated startup crashes while players are connected.
Why did my plugin disappear or fail after an update?
The usual causes are an incompatible server version, a missing or outdated dependency, an invalid JAR, duplicate files, or a configuration format that changed. The console and latest.log normally identify which category applies.
The plugin is absent from /plugins
- Confirm that the file is in the active server’s
pluginsdirectory, not a local download folder or an extra nested directory. - Check that the filename ends in
.jarand that an archive was not uploaded instead. - Look for a second copy with a different version or filename and remove it from the active directory.
- Confirm that you restarted the correct server instance after uploading the file.
The console reports an invalid plugin or load error
Re-download the file from the trusted author source and compare its size or checksum when the author publishes one. A truncated upload, a corrupted transfer, or a file intended for another mod loader can prevent loading. Do not try to repair a JAR by renaming it.

The console reports a missing dependency
Read the plugin’s requirements and install the named dependency in a compatible version before restarting again. Some plugins require a library plugin or a precise version range; updating only the main JAR can leave that requirement unsatisfied.

The plugin reports an unsupported Minecraft or API version
Use a release that explicitly supports the server’s Minecraft and implementation version, or plan a coordinated server upgrade after checking every installed plugin. Do not assume that a release marked “latest” supports an older server.
The plugin starts but behaves incorrectly
Check for configuration migrations, renamed settings, permission changes, and integration requirements in the release notes. Compare the generated configuration with your backup, restore a known-good value when appropriate, and test one changed setting at a time so the cause remains identifiable.

Rollback restores the previous JAR and, when necessary, the previous plugin configuration from the backup. Stop the server first; never swap files while it is running.
- Record the first useful error from the console,
logs/latest.log, or a crash report. - Stop the server cleanly if it is still running.
- Move the failed JAR out of the active
pluginsdirectory. - Restore the previous JAR from the dated backup. If the update changed configuration files, restore the matching pre-update plugin folder as well.
- Remove any staged replacement from
plugins/updateso it cannot be applied again at the next restart. - Start the server and confirm that the previous version enables and that worlds and integrations are available.
- Keep the error details for the plugin author and do not attempt another update until compatibility and migration requirements are clear.
If the rollback itself fails, stop again and restore the complete pre-update set of plugin JARs and configuration files. A plugin may depend on a matching library or companion version, so restoring only one file can leave an incompatible combination.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should hosted-server customers update plugins?
Shared hosts commonly offer a web file manager, SFTP, scheduled backups, or a one-click restart. The labels differ, but the operational order does not: create or verify a backup, check compatibility, upload or stage the JAR, restart, and inspect the logs.
Using a web panel
- Use the panel’s backup or snapshot function and wait for it to finish.
- Open the file manager for the actual server instance and locate
plugins. - Upload the replacement manually, or create
plugins/updatefor a Paper server. - Use the panel’s graceful restart only after the upload completes.
- Open the live console and log viewer to check enable messages and errors.
Using SFTP
Connect to the server directory assigned by the host, not a home directory that contains a different instance. Upload only after the server is stopped, verify the transfer completed, and close the session before restarting. If the host runs multiple instances, confirm the port or instance name in the panel before changing files.

When the host controls backups
Ask what a snapshot includes, how long it is retained, and whether it covers worlds, server settings, plugin data, and JARs. A backup that covers worlds but excludes the plugin directory cannot fully restore a plugin update.
What security and maintenance practices prevent update problems?
Treat every plugin JAR as executable server software. Use trusted sources, limit changes to one planned maintenance window, and keep a version record so a working combination can be reconstructed.
- Download only from the plugin author or a recognized repository.
- Do not run files intended for a different loader, such as Fabric or Forge, on a Bukkit-compatible server.
- Keep a dated list of plugin names, versions, dependencies, and the Minecraft/server version.
- Update related dependencies in the order documented by the author.
- Maintain a separate, restorable backup before each change.
- Review startup logs after every update, even when the server appears normal.
- Schedule updates when players can be warned and a rollback can be performed without pressure.
Plugin-specific compatibility, configuration migrations, and dependency requirements vary by release. The author’s current notes take precedence over a generic procedure, especially when a major Minecraft version or server implementation has changed.
What is the practical decision between manual replacement and Paper staging?
Choose manual replacement when you want to see and control the exact active file; choose Paper’s update folder when you want to prepare a replacement for the next restart without placing it in the active directory first. Neither method is a substitute for backups, a stopped server, compatibility checks, or post-restart verification.
| Choose this | When it fits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Manual replacement | A single plugin update, direct access to files, and a preference for an explicit old-file move | Confirm the old JAR is outside the active directory and no duplicate remains |
| Paper update folder | A Paper server and a planned batch of replacements for the next maintenance restart | Stage only verified JARs and remove anything that should not be applied |
What should a repeatable plugin-update checklist contain?
Use a short checklist every time so a routine update does not skip the steps that protect the world and configuration.
- Identify the server implementation, Minecraft version, plugin name, and installed version.
- Read the official release notes for compatibility, dependencies, migrations, and update order.
- Back up worlds, server settings, plugin data, and plugin JARs; verify the backup is usable.
- Stop the server cleanly and confirm the process is offline.
- Move the old JAR and install one compatible replacement, either manually or in Paper’s
plugins/update. - Restart and watch the console for load, dependency, compatibility, and configuration errors.
- Check
/pluginsorpluginsand exercise the plugin’s important commands and integrations. - Keep the backup until the update has remained stable; roll back from it if the first relevant error cannot be resolved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I update a Bukkit plugin without taking the server offline?
Not for a normal JAR replacement. Bukkit-compatible servers load plugins during startup, so a safe update requires a stopped process and a restart; schedule a maintenance window rather than relying on a live file swap.
How can I tell whether a plugin update changed its configuration format?
Read the release notes for migration instructions and compare the post-startup files with your pre-update backup. Preserve the original folder, and apply documented changes incrementally instead of deleting the configuration to force a reset.
Should I update a plugin’s dependencies before or after the main plugin?
Follow the order specified by the plugin author, because some releases require a newer library or companion plugin first. If no order is stated, make a complete backup and change one related component at a time so a dependency error can be isolated.
What information should I give a plugin author when an update fails?
Include the plugin and server versions, the Minecraft version, dependency versions, the first relevant error from logs/latest.log, and whether the previous JAR works again. Remove passwords, tokens, IP addresses, and other private data before sharing logs.
