To update Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 system software, connect the console to the internet and open HOME Menu > System Settings > System > System Update. To update one game, highlight its HOME Menu icon, press +, then choose Software Update > Via the Internet. The same System Update screen shows the installed system version.
How do I check my Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 system version?
Open System Settings > System > System Update. The installed system version appears on that page; you can check it before or after starting an update. Nintendo publishes version numbers in its update notices, but there is no single version number to rely on indefinitely, so use the number shown on your console when checking what is installed.

Connect the console to the internet, then use the System Update screen. Nintendo says update data downloads automatically while the console is online; if an update is ready, the console prompts you before you start software.
- Connect the console to the internet.
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > System > System Update.
- Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available.
- Wait for the update process to finish before using the console.
The same path applies when you simply want to check the currently installed system version. If no update is available, the console’s displayed version remains the useful reference; the steps do not depend on a particular latest-version number.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
How do I update an individual Switch or Switch 2 game?
Start the update from the game’s icon on the HOME Menu. The procedure updates that selected software rather than the console’s system software.
- Close the game and return to the HOME Menu.
- Highlight the game’s icon.
- Press + to open its options.
- Choose Software Update > Via the Internet.
- Allow the download and installation to finish before launching the game.
Nintendo also documents automatic software-update downloads while the console is online. Automatic downloading depends on the console’s settings and available storage; the manual path is useful when you want to request an update for a particular title.

What is the difference between a system update and a game update?
A system update applies to the console software, while a game update applies to an individual title. They have separate paths, so updating one does not substitute for checking the other.

| Update type | Scope | Where to start | Internet or alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| System software | The console | System Settings > System > System Update | Connect to the internet to check and download through the documented system-update path. |
| Individual game | The selected game | Highlight its HOME icon, press +, then choose Software Update | Choose Via the Internet, or use version matching with nearby local users where supported. |
Both update types can download automatically while the console is online, but a manual check makes it clear which software you are asking the console to update.
Can I update a game without an internet connection?
Nintendo documents Match Version with Local Users as an option for sharing game update data with nearby compatible consoles. It is a local alternative for game software updates, not the internet-based method described for checking and downloading system software.
- Bring the consoles close enough to connect locally.
- On the console with the game to update, highlight the game’s HOME Menu icon and press +.
- Choose Software Update > Match Version with Local Users, then follow the on-screen steps.
Nintendo’s Korean support page says participating consoles must be on system version 4.0.0 or later. That requirement is specific to the cited Korean guidance; check the instructions shown for your region and console before relying on local version matching.

Where does Switch 2 store updates, and which memory cards work?
On Switch 2, downloadable software, downloadable content, and update data can be stored in system memory or on a microSD Express card. Save data remains in system memory. Nintendo states that only a microSD Express card is compatible with Nintendo Switch 2; a regular microSD card is not a substitute for expanding its storage.
If a download cannot proceed because storage is full, check System Settings > Data Management to review available space. If you need additional storage on Switch 2, use a microSD Express card. Inserting one can prompt a system update, so follow the console’s instructions if that happens.
What should I know about Switch 2 game-key cards?
The first time you launch software supplied on a Switch 2 game-key card, the console needs an internet connection to download the game’s software data. Make sure there is enough free space in system memory or on a microSD Express card, and keep the game-key card inserted when playing. Nintendo says a Nintendo Account is not required for this initial download.

Why won’t my Switch or Switch 2 game update?
Start with the two common requirements: a working internet connection for an internet update and enough free storage for the download. If the game still does not update, retry from its HOME Menu options, restart the console, and check for a system update.
- The download does not start: confirm the console is connected to the internet, then retry HOME icon > + > Software Update > Via the Internet.
- The download stops or cannot complete: open System Settings > Data Management and check available space. On Switch 2, additional card storage must be microSD Express.
- The update still fails after checking connection and storage: restart the console, open System Settings > System > System Update, and then retry the game’s manual update path.
- There is no internet access: use Match Version with Local Users for a game update if nearby compatible consoles and the required system version are available.
- A game-key card is being used for the first time: insert the card, connect to the internet, and let its required software-data download finish.
These steps follow Nintendo’s documented procedures; they do not establish that every update problem has the same cause. If the console displays an error message, note its exact wording when seeking help, because the general checks above do not identify a cause for every error.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Switch game update also update the console?
No. Nintendo provides separate system-software and individual-game update paths. A game update is not evidence that the console system software is current.
Do I need a Nintendo Account to download a Switch 2 game-key card for the first time?
Nintendo says an account is not required for the initial software-data download. The first launch still requires an internet connection and enough free storage.
Can I install the latest Switch system version from a game update?
Nintendo’s documented game-update procedure updates the selected game, while system software is checked separately in System Settings. The cited instructions do not describe installing a system update through a game’s update screen.
