To update a SourceMod plugin safely, back up the current addons/sourcemod tree, read the plugin author’s requirements, replace the compiled .smx and every declared dependency, then restart or change the map as appropriate. Verify the result from the server console with meta list, sm version, sm plugins list, and sm exts list. If the plugin reports <Failed>, inspect its details and the SourceMod logs before changing anything else.

The important distinction is scope. A plugin-only update normally changes one compiled file and perhaps translations, gamedata, configuration, or an extension. Updating SourceMod itself replaces the runtime binaries, extensions, gamedata, translations, and default plugins, so it requires a planned shutdown and a more complete verification.

What does a SourceMod plugin update actually change?

Most plugin updates are replacements of a compiled .smx file in addons/sourcemod/plugins. That description is incomplete when the release includes supporting files. A new build may depend on a translation file, gamedata definition, configuration file, or extension, and the plugin can fail even though its .smx is in the correct directory.

Keep these three operations separate when planning maintenance:

Approach Files affected Downtime Main risk Verification
Plugin-only update One .smx, plus dependencies named by the author Often a map change or brief reload Missing dependency or incompatible game sm plugins list and sm plugins info
Full SourceMod upgrade Core binaries, extensions, gamedata, translations, and default plugins Planned stop and restart Stale gamedata, changed configuration, or mismatched files meta list, sm version, sm plugins list, and sm exts list
Runtime reload The currently loaded plugin Minimal Stateful plugin behavior or an extension still in use sm plugins reload followed by list output

AlliedModders’ management guidance is the controlling reference for an individual release: “Always follow instructions on the plugins page.” A plugin’s release notes can require a particular SourceMod build, another plugin, an extension, a translation, or a new gamedata file even when the visible change is described as a single plugin update.

What should you check before replacing a plugin?

Confirm the game, directory, and installed versions

Work in the server’s actual game directory, not a similarly named test or staging directory. From the server console, run:

meta list
sm version

meta list confirms that Metamod:Source and its loaded components are visible. sm version reports the installed SourceMod build. Record both outputs in your maintenance notes so you can compare them with the plugin’s stated requirements and explain a rollback later.

Read the release page and package notes

Look for all of the following before downloading or copying files:

  • Supported Source game or mod and any game-version restriction.
  • Minimum SourceMod or Metamod:Source version.
  • Required extensions and their compatible builds.
  • Required translations, gamedata, configuration files, or companion plugins.
  • Installation paths and any migration step for existing configuration.
  • Known incompatibilities, removed commands, or changes that require a map change or restart.

Do not assume that a newer compiled plugin is always backward-compatible with an older framework. “Wrong game” and missing-native errors are often compatibility problems, not bad uploads.

Make a rollback copy

Before touching the live installation, copy the current addons/sourcemod tree to a dated backup location. Include the existing plugins, configuration files, translations, gamedata, extensions, and relevant logs. Preserve the directory structure and filenames so that restoring the old state is a file-copy operation rather than an improvised reconstruction.

A useful naming pattern is sourcemod-backup-YYYY-MM-DD-HHMM. Keep the backup outside the live addons directory and verify that the copy contains the files you intend to restore. The backup is especially important when a package contains several files, because restoring only the old .smx may leave a newer gamedata or translation file behind.

Choose a maintenance window

For a plugin-only change, schedule a low-impact period in which you can change the map or explicitly reload the plugin. For a framework upgrade or any extension replacement, stop the server completely. The SourceMod upgrade guidance requires a stopped server, and replacing a loaded extension can be blocked by the operating system or crash the process.

How do you install an updated plugin safely?

  1. Download the release that matches your game. Keep the original package until verification is complete. Read its included instructions rather than relying on the filename or upload date.
  2. Stop when the scope requires it. A plugin-only replacement can usually wait for a map change or controlled reload. Stop the server before replacing SourceMod binaries, extensions, or a complete framework package.
  3. Replace the compiled plugin. Copy the new .smx into addons/sourcemod/plugins. Use the exact filename expected by the package; changing a filename can affect configuration entries, admin menus, or commands that refer to it.
  4. Keep the source when supplied. Place the matching .sp in addons/sourcemod/scripting. Players do not need the source file to run the plugin, but retaining it makes future maintenance and recompilation possible.
  5. Copy declared support files. Put package-supplied translations, gamedata, configuration files, and required extensions into their matching directories. If the archive preserves the SourceMod folder structure, copy its contents into the existing sourcemod directory so the paths remain aligned.
  6. Review configuration changes. Compare a new example configuration with your existing file instead of blindly overwriting customized settings. Preserve local values while adding newly introduced keys according to the author’s instructions.
  7. Activate the change. Restart the server when you replaced framework files or extensions. For a plugin-only update, perform a map change or use a controlled plugin load or reload after confirming that the plugin is safe to reinitialize.
  8. Verify from the server console. Run the commands in the verification section below and inspect logs before reopening the server to players.

Do not delete unrelated plugins or “clean” the directory during the same maintenance window. Keeping the change limited to the release package makes a failure easier to attribute and makes the rollback reliable.

Where does each SourceMod file belong?

Use the package’s preserved folder structure whenever possible. These are the locations that matter during an update:

Path below addons/sourcemod Typical contents Why it matters during an update
plugins Compiled .smx files The file loaded by SourceMod at runtime
scripting Plugin source .sp and compiler-related files Useful for maintenance and future recompilation; not required for runtime loading
translations Language files, usually .txt Missing or misplaced translations can make a plugin fail or leave messages unresolved
gamedata Game-specific definitions, usually .txt Defines how SourceMod and extensions interact with mod-specific properties
configs Plugin and SourceMod configuration files Controls behavior and may contain settings that must be migrated rather than overwritten
extensions Extension binaries Provides natives or functionality required by some plugins; replacement requires a stopped server
bin SourceMod runtime binaries Part of a full SourceMod upgrade, not a normal single-plugin replacement

When an archive contains a file outside these locations, follow the author’s installation notes. Do not infer a new path from the file extension alone; an extension, gamedata file, or translation in the wrong directory can produce a misleading plugin error.

Do you need to restart the server after updating a plugin?

Not always. A plugin-only update can become active after a map change or an explicit load/reload, provided no framework or extension files are being replaced. A full restart is the safer and required choice for SourceMod upgrades, extension replacements, and plugins that maintain state which cannot be cleanly reconstructed.

Map change

A map change unloads and loads plugins through the normal SourceMod lifecycle. It is less disruptive than a process restart but still interrupts the current round and can reset plugin state. Announce the change to players and use it only when the plugin’s instructions allow it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Explicit reload

From the server console, use the plugin command with the plugin’s filename or identifier:

sm plugins reload <plugin>

Follow it with sm plugins list. Reloading is not a universal substitute for a restart: a plugin may leave timers, handles, database state, or external resources behind, and an extension loaded by that plugin must not be replaced while it is in use.

Full restart

Stop the server, replace the required files, and start it again. This releases loaded binaries and ensures that the new SourceMod core, extensions, gamedata, and plugins are all read from disk together. Do not overwrite framework files in a running process merely to avoid downtime.

meta list
sm version
sm plugins list
sm exts list
  • meta list should show the expected Metamod:Source and loaded components.
  • sm version confirms the SourceMod build you are actually running, rather than the one you intended to install.
  • sm plugins list should show the updated plugin without an error state.
  • sm exts list confirms that required extensions loaded.

If the plugin appears with <Failed>, obtain its numeric or listed identifier and run:

sm plugins info <plugin id>

Read the exact error text and then check the SourceMod logs. The error usually identifies a missing file, native, extension, or game mismatch; guessing and repeatedly reloading can obscure the first useful message.

Why does an updated plugin show <Failed>?

The translation file is missing

A release may include a translation file that must be copied into addons/sourcemod/translations. If it was omitted or placed in another directory, the plugin can fail during startup or display incomplete text. Recheck the package contents and the author’s stated path, then reload or restart after correcting it.

A native or required extension is unavailable

Some plugins call functions supplied by another plugin or by a SourceMod extension. A missing or outdated dependency produces a native or extension error even when the main .smx is valid. Compare the release requirements with sm exts list, install the declared compatible dependency, and restart if an extension binary was replaced.

The plugin targets a different game

The message “Wrong game” means the build is intended for another Source game or mod. Remove or disable that build, restore the previous compatible version, and obtain the release for the server’s game. Do not try to bypass the check; game-specific assumptions can cause crashes or incorrect behavior.

Gamedata is stale

Gamedata tells SourceMod how to interact with mod-specific properties. A game patch can invalidate those definitions, so a plugin that worked yesterday may fail after the game updates. Install the current gamedata supplied by the plugin or framework author and let SourceMod’s approved automatic update behavior run when enabled.

Rollback is the fastest safe recovery

Disable the failing plugin, restore the dated backup of its previous files and any replaced dependencies, then restart or change the map as required. Record the exact failure output and compare it with the author’s compatibility notes before attempting a second update. A rollback that restores only the .smx is incomplete if the failed package also changed gamedata, translations, configurations, or extensions.

How is updating SourceMod itself different?

A full SourceMod upgrade is not just copying a newer plugin. With the server stopped, replace the complete runtime set described by the release:

  • Runtime binaries in addons/sourcemod/bin.
  • Extension files in addons/sourcemod/extensions.
  • All supplied .txt files in addons/sourcemod/gamedata.
  • All supplied .txt files in addons/sourcemod/translations.
  • Default .smx files in addons/sourcemod/plugins.

Review the release notes for configuration changes before replacing customized files. Only plugin developers normally need updated include files in scripting; if you compile plugins against new includes, update the compiler at the same time so the generated binaries match the headers.

AlliedModders emphasizes that updating every gamedata file is “extremely important” because those files specify how SourceMod interacts with mod-specific properties. Leaving old gamedata beside new binaries can create failures that look like plugin bugs.

How do automatic updates and security settings affect maintenance?

The official core.cfg uses these defaults:

Setting Default Operational meaning
DisableAutoUpdate no Automatic gamedata updating is enabled.
ForceRestartAfterUpdate no SourceMod does not force a server restart after an automatic update.
BlockBadPlugins yes SourceMod blocks plugins identified as unsafe.

Automatic gamedata updates do not replace the need to read a plugin’s release notes or maintain backups. They also do not guarantee that a new extension, translation, configuration, or companion plugin is installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leave BlockBadPlugins enabled unless you have a documented, controlled reason to change it. The official comments strongly advise this because malicious plugins have previously enabled destructive file access and full RCON control. Treat an unfamiliar plugin package as executable server code: obtain it from a source you trust, inspect its requirements, and retain the previous version for rollback.

What is the safest repeatable update checklist?

  1. Identify the exact game and installation directory.
  2. Run meta list and sm version; save the output.
  3. Read the plugin’s release page, compatibility notes, and installation instructions.
  4. List every required plugin, extension, translation, gamedata file, and configuration change.
  5. Create a dated copy of addons/sourcemod, custom gamedata, translations, configurations, and logs.
  6. Schedule a map change for a plugin-only update or a full stop for framework and extension changes.
  7. Copy the new .smx to addons/sourcemod/plugins and retain the matching .sp when supplied.
  8. Copy all declared support files to their matching directories.
  9. Activate the change with the appropriate map change, reload, or restart.
  10. Run meta list, sm version, sm plugins list, and sm exts list.
  11. If necessary, run sm plugins info <plugin id> and read the SourceMod logs.
  12. Disable and roll back immediately if the plugin fails, reports “Wrong game,” or exposes a dependency error.

This procedure keeps the file scope explicit, makes the activation method deliberate, and leaves you with both a diagnostic trail and a known-good restore point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload a new .smx while players are connected?

You can copy a plugin-only file during operation, but the running process will continue using the loaded version until a map change, reload, or restart. Do not replace SourceMod binaries or extension files while the server is running; schedule a stop for those changes.

Should I delete the old plugin before installing the update?

Usually no: copying the new file over the same filename preserves configuration references and makes the change easy to roll back. Remove an old file only when the release explicitly renames or retires it, and confirm that no configuration still loads the previous name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether a failure is caused by the plugin or SourceMod?

Compare the failure output from sm plugins info with sm version and sm exts list. A missing native or extension points to a dependency, while “Wrong game” points to an incompatible build; a framework-wide failure after replacing binaries warrants restoring the complete backup.

What should I do after the game itself receives a patch?

Check the plugin and framework release notes for new gamedata before changing plugin binaries. Run the normal verification commands after updating gamedata, because a plugin can remain listed while its game-specific signatures are no longer valid.
