How to Upgrade a Disney Lorcana Deck with Hyperia City Cards (2026 Guide)

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upgrade an existing Disney Lorcana deck by keeping its two-ink identity and win condition, then adding a small Hyperia City package that makes that plan better. Do not replace the list wholesale. Start with same-curve substitutions, preserve enough early plays and inkable cards, and test one package at a time. Hyperia City prereleases on October 16, 2026, with broad availability on October 23, 2026. Before committing to a final list, verify each card’s current text, inkability, rarity and set membership in Ravensburger’s official card gallery and check the current rules and event legality.

What Hyperia City changes for deck builders

Hyperia City adds more than a character theme. Its most important deck-building element is ink drops, a temporary resource that can accelerate a turn or unlock effects that check whether an ink drop is in play. The set also introduces Disney and Pixar’s Coco glimmers, songs and discard-oriented play patterns, plus new locations and support for princess, Mickey, Zootopia and Gargoyles themes.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Those additions do not make one universal “best” upgrade. A Ruby-Amber list built to pressure the board wants different cards from an Amethyst-Steel list that wins through card advantage. Compare every candidate by ink pair, inkability, cost curve, lore or strength output, dependence on other cards, removal resilience and usefulness when drawn without its support package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No independent win-rate or performance statistic was published with the set announcement. Treat Hyperia City as a new set of tools, not a guaranteed power increase, and let testing determine whether a package advances your deck’s stated plan.

Release timing and availability

  • Broad release: October 23, 2026.

Availability, card text, errata and tournament legality can change after release. If you are preparing for an organized event, recheck the current comprehensive rules, any errata notices and the event’s legality list immediately before submitting a deck.

Understand the new mechanics before changing your list

Ink drops are counters, not cards

An ink drop is kept beside the play area as a counter. Remove one to pay for one ink. You can pay a cost entirely with drops, entirely with normal ink, or with a combination of both. Once removed, a drop cannot be reused. Printed counters appear in Hyperia City boosters, but a die or another clearly distinguishable object can represent the number of drops you have.

Because drops are temporary, they are most valuable when they convert into a meaningful timing advantage: an earlier character, a larger effect, or a turn in which you both develop your board and hold up normal ink. Do not count an unspent drop as permanent ramp when evaluating a hand; it disappears when used and may be difficult to replenish.

Adventurous changes how a character quests

A character with Adventurous cannot challenge and must quest each turn if able. Mickey Mouse – Best In Town is the introductory example. Its Hot Dog! ability gives each player an ink drop at the end of your turn if Mickey is exerted. That can accelerate your next play, but it also gives the opponent a resource, so include Adventurous characters when their lore output or triggered ability is worth the loss of challenge flexibility.

Coco cards reward a stocked discard pile

Ravensburger describes the Coco group as rewarding players for remembering past glimmers. Land of the Dead – Marigold Bridge can provide extra lore when 10 or more cards have passed into your discard pile. Songs and characters such as Miguel Rivera – Street Musician reward a discard-based plan. This is a real engine, not merely a character-type bonus: you need enough discard enablers, payoff cards and ways to keep functioning when the payoff is not drawn.

Several cards check for an ink drop

  • Madam Mim – Resourceful Trickster: highlighted for hand value.
  • Go Go Tomago – Extreme Tester: generates an ink drop when challenged.
  • Wasabi – Called into Battle: has a stronger laser effect while an ink drop is in play.
  • Jousting Match: deals extra damage when an ink drop is used.

These cards pull in different directions. Go Go Tomago asks the opponent to challenge her before she replenishes a drop, while Wasabi and Jousting Match reward you for timing a drop during a specific turn. Build around the interaction only when the surrounding deck can create or spend drops reliably.

Selection and item engines improve consistency

Intense Research normally looks at the top two cards. If an ink drop pays for it, it looks at the top five instead, making the drop a way to improve selection rather than simply discounting a spell. Spyglass Hat can put a card from your hand into the inkwell when a newly played item has a unique name among your items. That requirement rewards a varied item suite and makes duplicate item names less attractive if the Hat is central to your plan.

How do I upgrade my Disney Lorcana deck with Hyperia City cards?

  1. Write down the existing shell. Record the two inks, primary win condition, average curve, number of uninkable cards, early plays and cards that are already performing below the deck’s plan.
  2. Choose one package. Select Coco songs and discard, ink-drop acceleration, locations, items and selection, princess support, or another tribe that your ink pair can actually support. Do not add unrelated singletons merely because they feature a favorite character.
  3. Filter the official gallery. Search by ink, cost, inkability, rarity and Hyperia City set membership. Copy text from the current gallery or release notes instead of relying on spoiler images; small wording changes can alter a trigger or an ink-drop condition.
  4. Make same-curve replacements first. Remove the weakest cards that occupy the same cost slot as your additions. This lets you evaluate the new effect without accidentally slowing the deck by adding expensive cards on top of the existing curve.
  5. Protect the deck’s foundations. Keep enough early plays to contest the first turns and enough inkable cards to make normal resource development reliable. A powerful package that leaves you with unplayable opening hands is not an upgrade.
  6. Test the package over several games. Track whether it advances lore, stabilizes the board, improves card selection or creates useful ink-drop turns. Also record dead draws, cards stranded in hand, games where the package lacked its enablers and turns in which an uninkable card prevented an important ink.
  7. Adjust in small increments. If the package works, add another copy of the cards that performed consistently and trim the least useful support card. If it fails, remove the enabler and payoff together rather than leaving isolated pieces in the deck.
  8. Recheck legality before an event. Confirm the current comprehensive rules, errata and event-legal set list immediately before publishing or registering a competitive list.

What cards should I add & take out?

Without your exact deck list, the safest answer is role-based: add cards that reinforce the plan your two inks already express, and take out cards that are weakest at the same point on the curve or require an engine your deck does not contain. The examples below show how to evaluate Hyperia City cards without pretending that one list fits every player.

Package Hyperia City examples Add when your deck wants Take out first
Coco discard Miguel Rivera – Street Musician; Land of the Dead – Marigold Bridge; compatible songs Cards moving into discard, song play and a lore plan that can reach the Marigold Bridge threshold Off-plan characters, isolated songs and high-cost cards that do not advance your discard or lore engine
Ink-drop tempo Go Go Tomago – Extreme Tester; Wasabi – Called into Battle; Jousting Match Early pressure, reliable opportunities to create or spend drops, and turns where an extra ink changes the board Slow cards that do not affect the board, plus conditional payoffs with no way to produce a drop
Hand value and selection Madam Mim – Resourceful Trickster; Intense Research; Spyglass Hat Card-quality improvement, a meaningful item count and enough unique item names for Spyglass Hat Redundant items, weak draw effects and cards that are poor when played without the selection engine
Adventurous support Mickey Mouse – Best In Town and other Adventurous characters A deck that can exploit forced questing and accepts that these characters cannot challenge Characters whose main job is defending the board through challenges
Locations and themed tribes Land of the Dead – Marigold Bridge; new princess, Mickey, Zootopia or Gargoyles support A list already built to gain value from locations or a coherent tribe in the same ink pair Generic cards that occupy the same curve slot but contribute less to the existing engine

Use the table as a replacement guide, not a shopping list. For example, adding Intense Research and Spyglass Hat to a deck with very few items may create two cards that are individually reasonable but collectively unreliable. Likewise, adding Miguel Rivera – Street Musician without enough discard movement leaves the Coco payoff disconnected from the rest of the deck.

Build a Coco discard package without overloading the deck

What the package needs

Begin with the cards that naturally put cards into your discard pile, then add Coco payoffs. Land of the Dead – Marigold Bridge matters once 10 or more cards have passed into your discard pile, so count how quickly your normal game plan reaches that condition rather than assuming it will happen automatically. Songs and Miguel Rivera – Street Musician should support the same discard rhythm, not compete with your deck’s primary way to gain lore.

How to tune the cuts

Remove cards that only become useful in a different archetype, especially isolated songs with no supporting characters or discard effects. Keep enough early plays and inkable cards that you can still develop while setting up the graveyard threshold. If games end before the threshold is realistic, trim the location or other payoff before cutting the discard enablers that your core plan uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop

Stop expanding the package when additional Coco cards are stranded in hand, when the discard pile grows but produces no lore or card advantage, or when the deck’s original win condition is delayed. The objective is a stronger existing deck, not a theme deck that happens to contain a few efficient cards.

Build an ink-drop tempo package

Plan the resource curve

Ink drops can be combined with normal ink, so map the turns where spending one changes what you can play. A drop is most useful when it lets you develop a character while preserving normal ink for interaction, or when it turns an ink-drop payoff from a conditional card into an active one. Keep track of when your deck actually receives drops; a plan based on Wasabi or Jousting Match needs reliable opportunities to have a drop in play or spend one.

Account for opposing choices

Go Go Tomago – Extreme Tester generates a drop when challenged, which means the opponent controls part of the timing. Do not count that drop as guaranteed acceleration in an opening-hand calculation. Mickey Mouse – Best In Town can give each player a drop at the end of your turn when exerted, so evaluate the symmetry: the effect may advance your next turn while also improving the opponent’s resources.

Prevent dead payoffs

Wasabi – Called into Battle has a stronger laser effect while an ink drop is in play, and Jousting Match deals extra damage when a drop is used. Include enough ways to create or retain drops that these cards are not merely over-costed versions of effects you already own. During testing, mark every game in which a payoff sat unused because the required counter never appeared.

Use items and selection to make draws more reliable

Intense Research

Intense Research looks at the top two cards normally and the top five when an ink drop pays for it. The upgrade is about quality as much as cost: paying a temporary resource to see five cards can find a missing curve piece or answer. Test whether your deck has enough situations where spending a drop on selection is better than spending it on a character or another payoff.

Spyglass Hat

Spyglass Hat can put a card from your hand into the inkwell when a newly played item has a unique name among your items. Build a varied item suite if you rely on that trigger. Multiple copies of the same named item may still be useful, but they do not provide the same diversity for the Hat’s condition. Replace redundant or low-impact items first, and make sure the Hat remains useful when you do not draw another item.

Curve discipline

Selection engines can tempt you to add too many setup cards. Keep the number of items and research effects proportional to the deck’s actual game plan. If testing shows that you find cards but cannot convert that selection into lore, board control or a winning position, return those slots to proactive characters or inkable cards.

Choose locations and tribal support by engine, not popularity

Hyperia City expands princess, Mickey, Zootopia and Gargoyles themes alongside Coco. A character’s popularity is not a reason to include it. Ask whether the card shares your ink pair, curve and payoff structure, and whether it remains useful without several other cards from the same tribe.

Locations deserve the same scrutiny. Land of the Dead – Marigold Bridge belongs in a deck that can reach its discard condition and exploit the extra lore. Other locations should earn their space by advancing your win condition or stabilizing the board, not simply because they are new. When two candidates pursue different plans, label the lists clearly—for example, “Coco discard” versus “ink-drop tempo”—instead of presenting one as universally superior.

How to test an upgrade package

Record useful evidence

  • How often the new card is playable on the turn you need it.
  • Whether the package advances lore, improves board position or increases card quality.
  • How often an ink drop is created, spent and stranded.
  • Whether an uninkable card blocks a necessary early ink.
  • How often a payoff appears without its enabler.
  • Whether the package survives common removal long enough to matter.

Interpret the results

A card that looks spectacular in a high-roll game may still be a poor inclusion if it is frequently dead in normal draws. Keep a package when its cards contribute independently and become noticeably better together. Trim it when you need several specific cards before any effect works, when it slows your early turns, or when it pulls the deck toward a different win condition.

Test one change at a time

Do not add Coco discard, ink-drop tempo and a large item engine simultaneously. You will not know which change improved or harmed the deck. Start with a compact package, play several games, record the outcomes above, then change only the weakest slot or package.

Should I buy Hyperia City boosters or singles?

Buy singles for exact upgrades

Singles are the efficient choice when you know the named playsets or specific locations, songs and characters your list requires. Use the official card gallery to confirm the current wording and set membership before buying. This avoids opening many packs for a few exact cards and lets you preserve your existing deck’s identity while upgrading only its weak slots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy boosters for collection growth

Ravensburger positions Hyperia City booster packs and booster display boxes for growing a collection and customizing decks. They make sense when you want discovery, trade material or a broad pool of cards rather than one precise package. Retailer stock and prices can change, so confirm availability at the time of purchase.

Choose the Illumineer’s Trove for accessories as well

The official Illumineer’s Trove includes eight booster packs, six damage dice and a full-art box. It is most relevant to a new or returning player who wants packs plus storage and game components in one product. If you already own accessories and need only a few Hyperia City cards, singles remain the more targeted option.

Use local stores for testing and trades

Prereleases, organized play and local game stores provide places to test a package, trade for missing cards and ask about current event requirements. Confirm store details and any commercial relationship before relying on a specific referral or purchase link.

Final checklist before you register the deck

  • The two-ink identity and original win condition are still clear.
  • Every Hyperia City card has been checked for current text, inkability and set membership.
  • The curve still contains enough early plays.
  • The uninkable-card count is intentional rather than accidental.
  • Ink drops are represented with counters, dice or another clearly tracked object.
  • Coco, item, location or tribal payoffs have enough enablers to function.
  • Cards that are poor without their package have been tested and justified.
  • Current rules, errata and event legality have been rechecked for the event date.

The strongest Hyperia City upgrade is usually a focused set of replacements, not a complete rebuild. Preserve what your deck already does well, add one coherent package, and keep only the cards that improve real games rather than isolated high-roll turns.
