Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Yes—you can usually upgrade the SSD in a used Steam Deck, ROG Ally, or Legion Go, but the correct drive depends on the exact model and revision. The original ROG Ally and Steam Deck LCD/OLED use single-sided M.2 2230-class NVMe drives. The ROG Ally X, ROG Xbox Ally, and ROG Xbox Ally X use 2280 drives according to ASUS. Battery work is a separate repair: the ROG Ally has a modular battery, while Steam Deck LCD and OLED batteries are strongly glued and require adhesive removal.
Back up or clone your data first, discharge the device as specified, disconnect the battery before touching the SSD, and plan the operating-system recovery before opening the case. A replacement SSD is not ready to use until Windows or SteamOS has been restored.

Identify the exact handheld before buying parts
“Steam Deck,” “ROG Ally,” and “Legion Go” each describe a family of devices rather than one universal parts list. Storage size, SSD length, battery connector, screw layout, and recovery method can change between revisions. Read the model label in the system settings and on the chassis, then match the replacement part to that exact model.

Choose the right SSD
2230 versus 2280
The numbers describe the approximate physical size: 22 mm wide and 30 mm long for a 2230 drive, or 22 mm wide and 80 mm long for a 2280 drive. A 2280 module cannot be substituted for a 2230 module when the device has no mounting point or clearance for it. Conversely, buying a short 2230 drive for a 2280-only revision may leave it unsupported or impossible to secure.
The original ROG Ally uses an M.2 2230 NVMe PCIe 4.0 port. iFixit documents 256GB and 512GB factory configurations and a maximum supported capacity of 2TB. ASUS identifies the Ally X and both newer ROG Xbox Ally variants as 2280 systems. The Steam Deck LCD guide identifies its SSD as a single-sided M.2 2230. Check the manufacturer’s service information for your particular OLED or Legion Go unit before paying for a part.
Capacity and compatibility checks
- Match the physical size and mounting position, not just the advertised capacity.
- Choose an NVMe drive when the original device uses NVMe; an M.2 SATA drive is not an interchangeable substitute.
- For a Steam Deck, verify that the replacement is single-sided so components do not press against the shield or case.
- For the original ROG Ally, 1TB and 2TB compact 2230 NVMe options are within ASUS’s stated compatibility; the included 256GB and 512GB figures describe factory configurations, not a requirement to stay at those sizes.
- For Ally X and newer Xbox Ally models, verify a 2280 drive and its mounting screw position.
- Keep the old drive until the new installation has booted and your saves and files are confirmed.
Inspect a used handheld before opening it
Storage expansion is only worthwhile if the rest of the device is healthy. Before disassembly, boot the handheld, connect its charger, and check for symptoms that may alter your repair plan.
- Record the installed storage capacity and the operating-system version.
- Check battery health, charging behavior, unexpected shutdowns, swelling, heat, and practical runtime. A swollen pack is a safety issue, not a routine upgrade.
- Test the display, controls, speakers, wireless connections, USB ports, microSD slot, and charger.
- Look for stripped screws, missing screws, gaps in the rear shell, or evidence that clips and ribbon cables were previously disturbed.
- Confirm that you can sign in to the relevant account and recover any encryption keys or credentials before wiping the old installation.
Photograph the exterior and the screw locations before opening. These records help distinguish pre-existing damage from a problem introduced during the repair.
Back up data and decide how you will restore the operating system
Changing the SSD removes the installed operating system unless you clone the old drive. Copy game saves, personal files, emulator data, screenshots, configuration files, and recovery credentials to another location. Cloud-synchronized saves are not a substitute for checking local files or games that do not synchronize.
Clone or reinstall on a Windows handheld
ASUS recommends a fresh Windows installation after an ROG Ally SSD replacement. If preserving the existing installation is more important than starting clean, ASUS says you can clone the drive with an external SSD enclosure. The enclosure must hold the source or destination drive securely, and the clone must complete before the old drive is removed.
ASUS Cloud Recovery is the supported setup route for a replacement Ally drive. It formats the replacement drive, so any files already on that drive will be erased. Do not place the only copy of your backup on the new SSD before starting recovery.

Restore SteamOS on a Steam Deck
After a Steam Deck SSD swap, follow Valve’s recovery or re-image instructions. Prepare the recovery media and a way to create it before disassembly. The recovery process can reinstall SteamOS and may erase the target drive, so verify that the old drive or a separate backup contains anything you need.

Tools and safety checklist
The required tools vary slightly by revision, but the Steam Deck LCD SSD guide lists Phillips #1 and #0 drivers, opening picks, and tweezers. A plastic pick is safer than a metal blade for releasing the rear shell.
- Shut the handheld down completely; do not leave it in sleep mode.
- Unplug the charger and remove every microSD card.
- Discharge the battery. ASUS specifically recommends 25% or lower for ROG Ally work.
- Work on a clean, well-lit surface and use ESD precautions.
- Organize screws by location. Captive screws and different lengths can be model-specific.
- Use a plastic opening pick around the shell clips. Do not force a pick deep enough to catch a cable or board component.
- Disconnect the battery before removing the SSD or touching other internal components.
- Avoid bending ribbon cables and never pull a cable by its wires.
Replace the SSD in an original ROG Ally
This sequence follows the safety order ASUS describes. Exact screw positions can differ if the shell has been replaced, so consult the model-specific service guide while working.
- Shut down Windows, unplug power, remove the microSD card, and discharge the battery to 25% or below.
- Remove the rear-cover screws and note their positions. Loosen the screws rather than prying the shell while a screw is still engaged.
- Run a plastic opening pick around the seam to release the clips. Keep the pick shallow and stop if resistance feels like a cable rather than a clip.
- Lift the back cover carefully and identify the battery connector before touching the SSD.
- Disconnect the battery. This removes power from the board while the drive is being handled.
- Remove the SSD retaining screw and any shield or cover specified for the original Ally. Slide the drive out of its connector at a shallow angle.
- Insert the replacement M.2 2230 NVMe drive at the same angle, press it down onto its standoff, and reinstall the retaining screw without overtightening.
- Reconnect the battery, inspect the connector and nearby cables, and close the rear cover only after the drive is secure.
- Reinstall the screws in their original locations. Do not substitute a longer screw, which can damage internal layers.
- Start ASUS Cloud Recovery or your prepared clean Windows installer. Treat the replacement drive as blank unless you completed a verified clone.
ASUS Cloud Recovery formats the replacement drive during setup. If you cloned the old drive instead, boot with the new SSD installed and confirm Windows, drivers, game launchers, saves, and controller input before deleting the old image.
Replace the SSD in a Steam Deck LCD or OLED
The SSD is user-replaceable, but LCD and OLED battery work should not be conflated with the SSD procedure. The battery is strongly glued, so avoid levering it simply to reach the drive.
- Power the Deck down fully, unplug it, remove the microSD card, and prepare the Valve recovery media before opening the case.
- Remove the rear-shell screws with the correct driver and keep them separated by position.
- Release the shell with plastic picks, working around clips instead of twisting the cover.
- Disconnect the battery before removing the SSD. Follow the exact LCD or OLED guide because connector placement and shielding can vary.
- Remove the SSD retaining screw and any foil or shield that the guide identifies. The LCD guide specifies a single-sided M.2 2230 drive.
- Lift the old module out at an angle and install the compatible replacement in the same orientation. Ensure the drive lies flat and the retaining screw is seated.
- Reconnect the battery, check that no cable is trapped, and reinstall the shell and screws.
- Boot from Valve’s recovery media and re-image or restore SteamOS. The recovery operation may erase the new drive, so keep your backup separate.
- After setup, test SteamOS updates, Wi-Fi, controls, suspend and resume, game installation, and microSD recognition.
What to do with a Lenovo Legion Go
The Legion Go is a Windows handheld family, but the available documentation does not establish every revision’s SSD and battery part number. Use Lenovo’s removal-and-replacement video or service documentation for the exact model code, including the 83E1 family references where applicable.
- Read the model and revision from the system information and chassis label.
- Confirm whether the service document specifies a 2230 or 2280 NVMe drive and the correct standoff.
- Check the battery’s voltage, connector, physical shape, and revision compatibility rather than relying on a marketplace title.
- Back up Windows and prepare a recovery installer before removing the original drive.
- Stop if the guide does not match the internal layout. A similar-looking handheld is not evidence that the procedure transfers.
Battery replacement is a separate repair
ROG Ally battery
iFixit rates the ROG Ally’s repairability at 7 and describes its battery as modular. That means the pack is connected through a serviceable connector rather than permanently bonded to the chassis. The practical order is to power down, unplug, discharge to ASUS’s 25%-or-lower recommendation, remove the rear shell, disconnect the battery, remove its fasteners or restraints, install an exact-model replacement, and reconnect it before closing the case.
Verify the replacement pack’s model number, voltage, connector, and physical dimensions. Do not install a pack merely because its capacity number looks similar. After reassembly, charge under supervision, check that Windows reports charging normally, and watch for heat, swelling, or an abnormal percentage jump.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSteam Deck LCD and OLED batteries
iFixit reports that both Steam Deck LCD and OLED batteries are strongly glued in place. Their repairability scores are 7 for LCD (2022) and 7 for OLED (2023), but that score does not make battery removal risk-free. Use the exact LCD or OLED battery guide, soften and separate the adhesive only as directed, and never puncture, crease, or pry aggressively against the pack.

SSD replacement does not require assuming that the battery can be removed in the same way. If the battery is swollen, damaged, or hot, stop using the device and seek qualified repair rather than attempting adhesive removal on a compromised cell.
First boot and verification checklist
Do not close out the repair after the device merely displays a logo. Confirm the complete software and hardware path.
- Enter the recovery environment or installer and verify that the new SSD is detected at the expected capacity.
- Complete the Windows or SteamOS installation without placing the only backup on the target drive.
- Install system updates and device drivers through the platform’s normal update process.
- Check that the full capacity is available in storage settings; a small difference between advertised decimal capacity and operating-system capacity is normal.
- Launch several installed games, test controller buttons and sticks, and check suspend/resume.
- Confirm Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, speakers, display brightness, USB-C charging, and microSD operation.
- For a battery replacement, monitor charging, runtime, temperature, and percentage reporting through at least one normal charge-and-use cycle.
Common failure modes and recovery
The new drive is not detected
Power down and disconnect the battery again. Re-seat the module, confirm that the correct form factor is installed, check the retaining screw and standoff, and inspect the connector for debris or damage. A 2230-versus-2280 mismatch or an M.2 SATA/NVMe mismatch can prevent detection even when the drive physically enters the slot.
Recovery starts but fails or erases the wrong data
Stop and verify the selected target disk. ASUS Cloud Recovery formats the replacement Ally drive; Valve recovery can also re-image a Steam Deck. Keep the old drive and backups disconnected from destructive recovery steps until you are certain which disk is being erased.
The shell will not close
Do not tighten screws to force it. Recheck that the SSD, shield, battery cable, and every ribbon cable sit in their original channels. A cable trapped under the shell or a drive not fully seated can create pressure and later failure.
The device boots but games or saves are missing
A clean installation does not restore personal files automatically. Reconnect the backup, sign in to the correct accounts, restore local saves and configuration folders, and reinstall games. If you cloned the drive, verify that the clone completed and that the replacement was selected as the boot device.
Battery percentage or charging looks abnormal
Shut down if the pack becomes hot, swells, smells unusual, or changes percentage erratically. Recheck the connector and replacement part compatibility. Do not puncture or continue charging a suspect lithium-ion battery.
How to decide whether the upgrade is worth doing
A used handheld with a healthy battery, intact shell, and a verified model label is a good candidate for an SSD upgrade. A unit with stripped fasteners, missing screws, unknown prior liquid exposure, or a swollen battery may cost more in risk and parts than its extra storage is worth.
| Condition | Practical decision |
|---|---|
| Original Ally with a healthy battery and 2230 slot | Plan a compatible 1TB or 2TB 2230 NVMe upgrade and Windows recovery or cloning. |
| Ally X or newer Xbox Ally revision | Buy only after confirming the 2280 layout and revision-specific battery details. |
| Steam Deck LCD or OLED needing more space | Use a single-sided 2230 replacement and Valve recovery; treat a battery repair as a separate adhesive-heavy job. |
| Legion Go with unclear revision | Obtain the exact Lenovo service documentation before ordering any internal part. |
| Any model with swelling or unsafe heat | Stop using it and address the battery safety problem before storage expansion. |
What the published repair scores do—and do not—tell you
iFixit gives the ROG Ally a repairability score of 7 (2023), the Steam Deck LCD a 7 (2022), and the Steam Deck OLED a 7 (2023). Those scores indicate that meaningful repair is possible, but they do not certify that every part is interchangeable or that battery removal has equal difficulty. The physical evidence matters more for your job: modular Ally battery access differs fundamentally from the strongly adhered Deck batteries, and SSD dimensions differ between original Ally and newer 2280-based revisions.
