The best PS5 upgrade for GTA 6 and other PS5 games is an internal M.2 NVMe SSD. A correctly fitted M.2 drive can download, copy and launch PS5 games directly. A USB extended-storage drive is cheaper and convenient for PS4 games and for parking PS5 games, but PS5 games must be copied back to console storage or the M.2 drive before you can play them.
Sony has not published an official GTA VI install-size figure. Its PlayStation 5 listing gives the release date as November 19, 2026, so plan for a substantial amount of free space and check the launch download requirement rather than trusting leaked numbers.

What a PS5 storage upgrade actually changes
The standard PS5 storage fills quickly because modern games can occupy tens or hundreds of gigabytes before patches, downloadable content and captures are added. When the internal console storage is nearly full, you have two practical expansion choices:
- Internal M.2 SSD: installs inside the console and can launch both PS5 and PS4 games directly.
- USB extended storage: connects externally and can launch PS4 games, while PS5 games stored there must be moved back before play.
Sony describes an installed M.2 drive as storage that can “download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps.” That makes it the right choice if you want GTA 6 and other current-generation games to remain playable without moving them every time.

Neither option replaces the console’s system storage. The PS5 continues to use its internal system area for operating-system data and other reserved files, so the capacity printed on a drive is not the same as the free space you will see after formatting.
Internal M.2 or USB drive: which should you buy?
Choose based on how you play, not just the advertised capacity. An internal M.2 drive costs more and requires opening the expansion bay, but it gives you an always-installed PS5 library. USB storage is simple to attach and useful for an archive or a large PS4 collection.
| Consideration | Internal M.2 NVMe SSD | USB extended storage |
|---|---|---|
| Can launch PS5 games directly? | Yes, once formatted and installed correctly. | No. Copy PS5 game data back to console or M.2 storage first. |
| Can launch PS4 games directly? | Yes. | Yes. |
| Typical use | Permanent, playable expansion for PS5 and PS4 games. | PS4 library, backup-style archive and temporary storage for PS5 games. |
| Installation | Requires powering down, removing covers, fitting a spacer and securing the SSD. | Plug in a compatible USB drive and format it on the PS5. |
| Interface requirement | PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, Key M. | SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or later. |
| Capacity supported by Sony | 250GB to 8TB. | 250GB to 8TB. |
| Heat and physical fit | Heatsink or another effective heat-dissipation structure required; strict width and thickness limits apply. | No internal heatsink fitment; use a drive designed for sustained external use. |
| Best for | Anyone who wants to launch GTA 6 and other PS5 games from the added drive. | Players who mainly need inexpensive capacity or do not mind copying PS5 games before playing. |
Sony’s specifications establish compatibility, not a guaranteed improvement in loading times. A compliant M.2 SSD may perform well, but do not buy one on the promise of a universal speed increase over the PS5’s built-in storage.

| Requirement | Sony’s current guidance |
|---|---|
| Storage type | PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe SSD, Key M. |
| Supported capacity | 250GB to 8TB. |
| Supported module lengths | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110. |
| Maximum width | 25mm. |
| Maximum total thickness | 11.25mm, including the heatsink and any other heat-dissipation structure. |
| Recommended sequential read speed | 5,500MB/s or faster. |
| Thermal management | Effective heat dissipation is required. |
Why the dimensions include the heatsink
The M.2 module itself is only part of the clearance calculation. Add the height of the heatsink, thermal pad, cover or other cooling structure when checking the 11.25mm limit. A bare SSD may meet the number while the finished assembly does not. Width also includes any protruding cooling hardware; Sony’s maximum is 25mm.
What “5,500MB/s or faster” means
The 5,500MB/s figure is Sony’s recommended sequential-read speed for compatible M.2 storage. It is not a promise that every game will load 35 percent faster with a drive rated at 7,000MB/s than with one rated at 5,500MB/s. Use it as a compatibility and specification target, then prioritize a correctly sized heatsink and a reputable drive.
A concrete example: Samsung 990 PRO 2TB with Heatsink
The Samsung 990 PRO 2TB with Heatsink (model MZ-V9P2T0CW) illustrates the kind of specification to look for. Samsung lists it as PS5-compatible with PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe 2.0, an M.2 2280 form factor, 2,000GB capacity and a maximum sequential-read rating of 7,450MB/s. Its listed dimensions with the heatsink are 80 × 24.3 × 8.2mm.

How to install an internal M.2 SSD in a PS5
Allow enough time to work carefully. Do not install or remove the drive while the console is powered on, and do not force a cover or connector.
- Update the PS5 system software. Install the latest available system update before opening the console. Sony’s M.2 installation guidance assumes current system software.
- Shut the PS5 down completely. Use the power menu rather than Rest Mode. Wait for the console’s lights to finish turning off, then unplug the AC cable and all other cables.
- Let the console cool and prepare a clean surface. Place it on a stable, scratch-free surface. Ground yourself before handling the SSD and avoid touching its gold connector contacts.
- Remove the correct outer cover. The cover-removal direction depends on the PS5 design, so use the procedure for your exact console model. Do not pry against the expansion bay or pull on the cover at an angle that resists the release.
- Open the expansion-slot cover. Remove the small screw securing the metal cover and set the cover and screw aside where they cannot be lost.
- Set the spacer to the SSD length. The bay includes mounting positions for the supported module lengths. Move the spacer to the hole marked for your SSD, such as 2280, before inserting the drive.
- Insert the M.2 SSD diagonally. Align the notch with the Key M connector and slide the module fully into the socket at an angle. It should enter smoothly; never push down before the connector is engaged.
- Press the SSD down and secure it. Lower the free end onto the spacer and fasten it with the supplied screw. The board should lie flat and should not flex. Confirm that the heatsink or other cooling structure remains inside Sony’s width and thickness limits.
- Replace the expansion-slot cover and the outer cover. Refit each part in the reverse order. If a cover does not seat, stop and check the drive height and the cover alignment rather than tightening a screw.
- Reconnect and start the PS5. Attach the cables, turn on the console and follow the on-screen prompt to format the new M.2 storage.
- Format only after checking the drive. Formatting erases all data on the SSD. Use a new drive or copy off anything you need before confirming. After formatting, the PS5 will show the available M.2 capacity in storage settings.
What happens if the formatting prompt does not appear?
- Power down and reseat the SSD, checking that the module is fully inserted and secured at the correct spacer position.
- Verify that the drive is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe with a Key M connector, not a SATA M.2 module.
- Check the total heatsink height and width against Sony’s limits.
- Install the latest PS5 system software and restart the console.
- If the console still does not detect the drive, remove it and test only after confirming its model-specific support and physical condition.
Move games to the M.2 drive and choose where new games go
After formatting, move existing titles from the Game Library. Highlight a game, press the Options button, choose Move Games and Apps, select the titles and choose the M.2 storage as the destination. The same menu lets you move games back to console storage when needed.
PS5 games moved to the M.2 drive can be launched there. PS4 games can also run from it. The move operation transfers installed game data; it does not create a second playable copy unless you deliberately leave the original in place.
Use the PS5 storage settings to select the preferred installation location for new PS5 and PS4 games. Keeping the built-in storage partly free gives the system room for updates and temporary files, while the M.2 drive can hold the main game library.

How USB extended storage works
USB storage is the straightforward option when you want capacity without opening the console. Sony supports drives from 250GB to 8TB that use SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or later. Only one extended-storage drive is used at a time.
Setting up a USB drive
- Connect the USB drive directly to a suitable PS5 USB port rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Open Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage and choose the connected drive.
- Select the format option and confirm. Formatting erases the drive, so back up anything important first.
- Use the storage settings to move installed games between console storage, M.2 storage and USB extended storage.
What you can play from USB
PS4 games can launch directly from USB extended storage. PS5 games cannot. Sony’s guidance is explicit: “PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage,” so copy a PS5 title back to console storage or M.2 storage whenever you want to play it. USB is therefore best treated as a parking area for PS5 data, not as the primary playable expansion for a PS5-first library.

A sensible capacity strategy before launch
- Choose an internal M.2 capacity that leaves room for GTA 6 alongside the games you actually keep installed. The supported range is 250GB to 8TB, but a 250GB drive leaves little headroom once formatting and several large games are accounted for.
- Keep substantial free space on either the console or M.2 drive rather than filling every last gigabyte. Updates often need temporary working space.
- Use USB storage to archive less-played PS5 games if you do not need them ready to launch. Copying them back takes time, but it can postpone buying a larger M.2 drive.
- Check the game’s download screen and the PlayStation Store listing at launch for the authoritative requirement.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying the wrong M.2 interface
“M.2” describes a physical shape, not the electrical standard. A SATA M.2 drive is not the PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe Key M drive specified for PS5 expansion. Read the complete model specification before ordering.
Ignoring the heatsink measurement
An SSD can meet the 80mm length and 25mm width limits while its heatsink exceeds the 11.25mm total-thickness allowance. Measure the assembled drive, including thermal layers and any raised labels.
Assuming a USB SSD launches PS5 games
USB extended storage is not equivalent to an internal M.2 drive. It can launch PS4 games, but PS5 games stored there must be copied back first.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFormatting the wrong drive
Both M.2 and USB setup procedures erase the selected drive. Disconnect unrelated storage, verify the drive name on the formatting screen and back up files before confirming.
Installing while the console is in Rest Mode
Rest Mode is not a substitute for a complete shutdown when opening the chassis. Turn the PS5 off, wait until its indicators are dark, unplug it and then begin.
Expecting a guaranteed loading-time upgrade
Sony’s 5,500MB/s recommendation defines a suitable performance class. It does not establish a universal loading-time advantage for every title or every SSD. Buy for capacity, compatibility and reliable cooling first.
Quick Recap
A practical upgrade decision
- You want GTA 6 permanently installed and ready to launch: buy a compliant internal M.2 NVMe SSD with an appropriately sized heatsink.
- You mainly play PS4 games and need inexpensive space: choose USB extended storage that meets the SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps-or-later and 250GB-to-8TB requirements.
- You rotate through PS5 games but rarely replay them: combine an internal M.2 drive for current games with USB storage as an archive.
- You are buying before GTA 6’s size is announced: leave substantial free capacity and wait for the official download requirement instead of relying on leaks.
