Hermes Agent is described by Nous Research as “The self-improving AI agent built by Nous Research.” You can run it on your own VPS rather than on a desktop, provided the server runs a supported Linux environment or you deploy the Tier 1 Docker distribution. The official project advertises use on everything from a “$5 VPS” to a GPU cluster or nearly-idle serverless infrastructure, but that sentence is positioning—not a guaranteed price or a published minimum specification.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Hermes Agent, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
For most trusted Linux VPSs, the native installer is the shortest route. Docker is the better fit when you need a more reproducible image and a tighter command-execution boundary. Neither option removes the work of configuring an AI provider, protecting credentials, controlling filesystem access, and keeping a remote gateway private.

Hermes Agent is an AI-agent runtime from Nous Research. Its description emphasizes self-improvement: the agent can be operated as a persistent service, connected to an AI provider, and given access to tools and files needed for the workflow you choose. On a VPS, the important distinction is that Hermes runs under your account and your operating controls rather than inside a hosted service managed for you.
The official README presents a wide range of deployment targets: “Run it on a $5 VPS, a GPU cluster, or serverless infrastructure that costs nearly nothing when idle.” Treat that as a statement about the software’s intended deployment flexibility. It does not establish a universal monthly price, a guaranteed workload on a $5 server, or a minimum CPU, memory, and storage configuration.

Can Hermes Agent run on a VPS?
Yes. The official platform matrix places Linux/WSL2 and Docker in Tier 1. A conventional Linux VPS follows the install.sh path; Docker uses the project’s image distribution and the docker pull workflow. The matrix does not identify a mandatory VPS provider, CPU count, RAM minimum, storage minimum, or guaranteed monthly price.
| Deployment method | Official support tier | Primary distribution path | Update method | Isolation model |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Linux or WSL2 native | Tier 1 | install.sh |
Use the Hermes update workflow documented for the native installation | Runs with the filesystem access of the account that launches it |
| Docker | Tier 1 | Pull and run a new project image | Replace the running image; Docker installations do not support hermes update |
Container boundary, with the example configuration dropping capabilities and disabling privilege escalation |
Tier 1 support means both approaches are first-class choices in the project’s documentation. It does not mean they have identical administration requirements. Native Linux is simpler when you trust the VPS and want direct access to files. Docker adds image and volume management, but it gives you a clearer boundary around commands the agent executes.
Decide how the VPS will be used before installing
Choose a native Linux installation when
- You control the VPS and are comfortable with Hermes sharing the account’s filesystem access.
- You want the fewest moving parts and the shortest path from SSH login to a working command.
- Your projects, credentials, and other tools already live on the host and do not need container-specific volume wiring.
- You prefer updating Hermes through its native update mechanism.
Choose Docker when
- You want a reproducible image that can be replaced as a unit.
- You want the agent’s terminal backend isolated from the host with the restricted capabilities shown in the configuration example.
- You can explicitly mount only the data and project directories Hermes needs.
- You accept the extra work of managing images, volumes, container startup, and container logs.
Set expectations about providers and models
Hermes still needs an AI provider and a selected model or endpoint. Have those details and the required credentials ready before troubleshooting the installation. A VPS does not automatically supply model access, and the deployment method does not choose a provider for you.
How to install Hermes Agent natively on an Ubuntu-style Linux VPS
The following sequence follows the documented Linux path. Distribution-specific package commands are intentionally not prescribed here because the official material does not establish one universal package manager or release requirement.

- Provision a supported Linux VPS. Select a current Linux image that you can administer over SSH. Create a dedicated, least-privilege account rather than operating the agent as a full system administrator.
- Connect over SSH. Confirm that you can log in with the account that will own the Hermes files and projects. Decide in advance which directories may be exposed to the agent.
- Install Git if you are using the Git-based path. The installation guide says the installer handles the remaining runtime dependencies, so do not add unrelated runtimes unless your own workflow requires them.
- Run the official installer. Execute
curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash. This is the project’s supported quick-install entry point for Linux, macOS, and WSL2: official Hermes installation script. - Let the installer finish its environment setup. The documented setup installs or prepares the Hermes runtime, Python, Node.js, ripgrep, ffmpeg, a virtual environment, and the global
hermescommand. Wait for the shell to report completion instead of starting configuration commands halfway through the process. - Configure an AI provider. Enter the provider credentials and endpoint required by your chosen model. Keep keys in the account or secret-management mechanism intended for the service; do not place them in a project directory that the agent does not need.
- Verify the selected model or endpoint. Run the Hermes verification flow described by the current release documentation and confirm that the account can reach the endpoint. A successful installation alone does not prove that authentication, model naming, quota, and network egress are correct.
- Install the gateway for persistent remote operation when appropriate. The VPS deployment guidance uses
hermes gateway installwhere a persistent gateway is needed. Check the command against the current release documentation before applying it, then verify which account owns the process, which address it binds to, and how authentication is enabled.
What the native installer does not solve
The installer can prepare the software environment, but it is not a VPS security policy. It does not, by itself, decide which directories Hermes may read, firewall the host, rotate provider keys, configure backups, or make a gateway safe to expose publicly. Those are operating decisions you must make around the installation.

Running Hermes Agent with Docker
Docker is a Tier 1 distribution method, but the exact image reference should come from the current Hermes release documentation. The documented workflow is to pull the project image, create a container with the required configuration and mounts, and replace that container when you update.
Plan the container boundary
- Mount only required paths. Give Hermes the data and project directories needed for the task. Avoid mounting the host root, unrelated home directories, SSH private-key directories, or broad credential stores.
- Keep the restricted settings. The configuration example describes Docker as an isolated terminal backend with dropped capabilities and no privilege escalation. Preserve those restrictions unless you have a documented reason to change them.
- Persist what must survive replacement. Container replacement is expected during updates. Store configuration and project data in deliberate host volumes or bind mounts so a new image does not erase them.
- Record the image version. Pinning or otherwise recording the image you deployed makes rollback and incident review practical, even if your update policy later moves to a newer tag.
Understand the Docker update rule
A Docker installation does not support hermes update. Updating means pulling the newer image, stopping the old container, creating a replacement with the same approved mounts and environment settings, and checking the gateway and model connection again. Repeating the original container configuration accurately is part of the operational cost of this approach.
Do not confuse isolation with complete security
A container reduces the host access available to the process when it is configured with least privilege, but mounted directories remain available to Hermes. API keys passed through environment variables or mounted files still need protection, and a gateway exposed on the network still needs authentication and firewall rules.
Native installation versus Docker
| Decision area | Native Linux | Docker |
|---|---|---|
| Installation effort | Shortest route: SSH to the VPS and run the official installer. | Requires Docker, an image reference, container configuration, and deliberate mounts. |
| Updates | Use the native Hermes update workflow. | Pull and run a replacement image; hermes update is not supported in Docker. |
| Filesystem access | The agent has the same filesystem access as the account running it. | The container can be limited to selected mounts; the example configuration drops capabilities and disables privilege escalation. |
| Configuration persistence | Files remain on the VPS account’s normal filesystem. | Persist configuration and projects through explicitly managed volumes or bind mounts. |
| Logs and diagnosis | Inspect the host process and the account’s service or shell logs. | Inspect container logs as well as the host’s Docker service and startup configuration. |
| Operational complexity | Lower day-to-day complexity, with more direct host exposure. | More image, volume, and lifecycle work, with a stronger command-execution boundary when configured correctly. |
There is no universally correct winner. A trusted, single-purpose VPS generally favors native Linux. A shared or more carefully segmented host, or a team that values repeatable image deployment, generally favors Docker.

What VPS size does Hermes need?
No authoritative source in the available documentation publishes a mandatory CPU count, RAM minimum, storage minimum, or universal monthly VPS price. Do not treat a provider’s smallest plan—or the README’s “$5 VPS” wording—as a guaranteed Hermes specification.
How to plan capacity without inventing a minimum
- Start with the workload. A lightweight text-agent session and a workflow that processes large repositories, invokes ffmpeg, or keeps several services active will not have the same resource profile.
- Separate model compute from agent hosting. If the model runs through an external provider, the VPS mainly hosts Hermes, its runtime, project files, and network connections. A local or self-hosted model can change the compute requirement substantially; the published Hermes material does not provide a sizing table for that case.
- Budget storage for real data. Project files, logs, virtual environments, Docker layers, and media handled through ffmpeg all consume disk space. Keep free space for updates and recovery rather than sizing only for the initial install.
- Measure after deployment. Watch memory pressure, CPU saturation, disk growth, and process restarts during the actual workflow. Increase the VPS only when the observed workload requires it.
- Plan network access. The server needs outbound access to the selected AI endpoint and any services your workflow uses. Restrictive egress rules can look like model or gateway failures until network policy is checked.
The practical answer is therefore workload-dependent: Hermes is designed to run on modest infrastructure, but the documentation does not justify promising that every workload fits a particular plan.
Security checklist for a self-hosted Hermes deployment
The configuration guide warns that “The agent has the same filesystem access as your user account.” For a native install, treat every readable directory as potentially available to the agent’s tools. Docker narrows the boundary only to the extent that you avoid excessive mounts and retain the restricted container settings.
- Use a dedicated account. Grant only the permissions needed for Hermes and its projects. Avoid running the agent as root.
- Protect provider credentials. Restrict file permissions, avoid committing keys to repositories, and rotate a key if it appears in logs, a mounted project, or a shell history.
- Limit mounts. In Docker, mount specific data and project directories rather than an entire home directory or host filesystem.
- Firewall the VPS. Allow SSH only as required and expose no Hermes gateway port until its bind address and authentication are known.
- Keep the gateway private or authenticated. A gateway that listens on a public interface is an internet-facing service. Use network restrictions, an authenticated access path, or both.
- Back up persistent data. Preserve project files and configuration separately from the running process or container so a failed update does not become data loss.
- Review permissions after changes. New mounts, plugins, scripts, or provider integrations can expand what the agent can read or execute.
These controls are operational recommendations; the official installation flow does not claim to configure them automatically.
Keeping a VPS deployment reliable
Make startup reproducible
Write down the Hermes version or image, the account that owns it, the provider endpoint, required environment variables, mounted directories, gateway bind address, and firewall rules. For Docker, preserve the complete container creation configuration. For native Linux, record the service or shell procedure used to start the gateway.

Separate configuration from disposable runtime files
Native installations keep files on the host account’s filesystem. Docker deployments need explicit volumes or bind mounts for anything that must survive image replacement. Store projects and configuration in locations covered by your backup plan, and keep temporary caches outside that critical set when possible.
Update deliberately
For native Linux, use the Hermes update procedure and test the model connection and gateway after updating. For Docker, pull and deploy the replacement image, then verify that every approved mount, environment variable, capability restriction, and network rule was carried forward. Do not run hermes update inside a Docker container.
Observe the whole path
When an operation fails, check the layer that owns the symptom: VPS resource pressure, host or container startup, filesystem permissions, outbound network access, provider authentication, model selection, or gateway reachability. Keeping host and container logs long enough to compare a failed deployment with a working one makes this separation easier.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common deployment problems
The installer stops before the Hermes command exists
Confirm that the SSH session is using the intended account, that Git is installed when you selected the Git-based path, and that the VPS can reach the installer URL. Re-run only after reading the final error output; adding random system packages can mask the original issue.
The command exists but the model request fails
Check the provider credential, endpoint, model identifier, and outbound firewall or DNS policy. A completed runtime installation does not validate those values. Verify the selected model or endpoint with the project’s current configuration instructions.

A Docker container loses data after an update
Review the replacement container’s mounts. Data stored only in the old container’s writable layer is not a durable persistence strategy. Recreate the container with the same approved data and project volumes, then verify permissions from inside the container.
Hermes can read more than intended
On native Linux, inspect the account’s directory permissions and move sensitive material out of its accessible paths. In Docker, remove broad mounts, restore dropped capabilities and no-privilege-escalation settings, and recreate the container.
A practical decision framework
- Use native Linux if the VPS is dedicated or trusted, direct filesystem access is acceptable, and you value the simplest installation and update path.
- Use Docker if limiting mounts and reproducing a known image matters more than minimizing administration.
- Delay public exposure until provider credentials, gateway authentication, firewall rules, and the filesystem boundary are documented.
- Choose capacity from measurements rather than a marketing price or an invented minimum specification.
- Document recovery before the first update: where projects live, how the gateway starts, how credentials are replaced, and how to roll back the native installation or Docker image.
With those choices made explicitly, a VPS becomes a manageable home for Hermes Agent rather than an unattended server process with unclear permissions.
