It filters for that selected vibration frequency instead of triggering on every vibration. The mechanics and frequency map below follow Mojang’s Java and Bedrock 1.20 release notes from 2023; later-version changes are not verified here.
Craft the calibrated sculk sensor
The calibrated sculk sensor does not generate naturally. In a crafting table, combine one sculk sensor and three amethyst shards to make one. Mojang documents this recipe in the Java Edition 1.20 release notes and the Bedrock 1.20.0 release notes.
Set its calibration signal
- Place the sensor so you can connect redstone to its designated calibration-input side.
- Provide the signal strength for the vibration category you want it to detect. The signal strength selects the frequency; the sensor listens only for that frequency.
- Connect the sensor’s output to the door, lamp, piston, or other redstone mechanism you want to trigger.
For example, a strength-10 input selects block-activation events in Java 1.20, including opening a door or chest. A signal from a redstone source can be routed to the input at the required strength; the input is for selecting a vibration category, while the sensor’s output is what drives your mechanism.
In Java snapshot 23w14a, Mojang documented that the calibration signal could reach the sensor through a block. That is a snapshot-specific implementation detail, not confirmation of the behavior in every later Java build or in Bedrock. See the 23w14a snapshot notes.

Java 1.20 signal-strength map
The Java Edition 1.20 release notes map signal strengths to these vibration categories and examples:
| Input strength | Vibration category and examples |
|---|---|
| 1 | Movement in any medium |
| 2 | Landing on a surface |
| 3 | Item interactions |
| 4 | Elytra gliding or certain mob actions, such as a Ravager roar or a wolf shaking |
| 5 | Dismounting a mob or equipping gear |
| 6 | Mounting or interacting with a mob |
| 7 | Mobs or players taking damage |
| 8 | Eating or drinking |
| 9 | Blocks deactivating, such as a door or chest closing, or a button unpressing |
| 10 | Blocks activating, such as a door or chest opening, or a button pressing |
| 11 | Block-state changes, such as a cauldron’s level rising or food being added to a campfire |
| 12 | Blocks being destroyed |
| 13 | Blocks being placed |
| 14 | Mobs or players teleporting or spawning |
| 15 | Mobs or players dying, or an explosion |
This numbered mapping is stated in Mojang’s Java 1.20 notes. Bedrock 1.20.0 lists the corresponding 15 categories in order, but its cited release-note passage does not label them with numbers; do not assume that passage independently confirms the Java numbering.

Plan around detection range and cooldown
Mojang’s Bedrock 1.20.0 notes give a maximum detection distance of 16 blocks. They also describe a combined active and cooldown period of 20 game ticks, with redstone output during the first 10 ticks. Java 1.20 specifies 10 active ticks followed by 10 cooldown ticks for calibrated sensors. These figures are from the 2023 release documentation.
While the sensor is active or cooling down, it does not listen for a new vibration. After cooldown, it returns to listening. A circuit that needs to respond to closely spaced events must account for this interval rather than expecting the sensor to register every event.

In Java 1.20, a calibrated sensor also strongly powers the block beneath it. Consider that when placing it next to or above other redstone components, since the powered block can affect the circuit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a calibrated sensor when filtering matters
A regular sculk sensor detects vibrations without the calibrated sensor’s input-side frequency selection, as described in the cited 1.20 notes. Choose the calibrated version when your circuit should respond to one event category—such as block activation—rather than all vibrations the sensor can detect.
