Yes—you can use a PS4 DualShock 4 to play Fortnite on a Windows PC. Start with a data-capable micro-USB cable because it is the simplest way to confirm that both Windows and Fortnite can see the controller. If you prefer wireless play, pair it through Windows Bluetooth by holding Share + PS until the light bar flashes.

Fortnite may work with the controller directly. If it does not, use one input translator, such as DS4Windows, to present the DualShock 4 as an Xbox-style XInput controller. Do not run DS4Windows and Steam Input together.

If Fortnite does not recognize your controller, Outbyte Driver Updater can check USB and gamepad drivers before you retry the setup.

What you need

  • A PS4 DualShock 4 controller.
  • A Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC.
  • Fortnite installed through the Epic Games Launcher.
  • Either a data-capable micro-USB cable or Bluetooth.
  • Optionally, DS4Windows if direct controller detection fails.

A cable that only charges will power the controller but will not allow Windows to receive controller data. For the first setup, use a known-good data cable.

Fastest method: connect the controller by USB

  1. Close Fortnite if it is running.
  2. Connect the DualShock 4 to the PC with a compatible micro-USB data cable.
  3. Press the PS button.
  4. Wait for Windows to identify the controller.
  5. Launch Fortnite from the Epic Games Launcher.
  6. Enter a lobby or practice mode and move an analog stick or press a face button.

Sony lists a compatible USB cable as a supported way to connect a DualShock 4 to a Windows PC. USB is also the best troubleshooting method because it avoids Bluetooth pairing, battery, interference, and feature-limit issues. See Sony’s DualShock 4 PC connection guide.

If Fortnite still displays keyboard controls, open the game’s controller settings and select the PC controller configuration or controller tab. Restart Fortnite after connecting the controller if the game was already open.

How to connect a PS4 controller wirelessly

  1. Disconnect the USB cable.
  2. Turn off the controller. If its light is on, hold PS until it turns off.
  3. Hold Share, then hold PS until the light bar begins flashing.
  4. In Windows, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
  5. Select Add device → Bluetooth.
  6. Choose Wireless Controller.
  7. Launch Fortnite and test the controls.

The PC must have working Bluetooth. If it does not, use USB or add a compatible Bluetooth USB adapter. Pairing the controller proves that Windows has connected it; it does not guarantee that every PC game will accept the controller’s input format.

Bluetooth limitations

Sony warns that some DualShock 4 features may not work over Bluetooth with non-Sony devices, including the touchpad, rumble, motion sensor, and headphone-jack audio. For the most predictable Fortnite setup, use USB. If you use a headset, connecting it directly to the PC or using USB audio may be more reliable.

Configure the controller in Fortnite

  1. Open Fortnite.
  2. Press Esc or open the in-game menu.
  3. Select the gear icon.
  4. Open the gamepad/controller tab.
  5. Choose Controller Mapping or the PC controller configuration selector.
  6. Select a preset or choose Custom.
  7. Adjust the controls and select Apply.

Epic lists these controller presets: Old School, Quick Builder, Combat Pro, Builder Pro, and Custom. Builder Pro is a reasonable starting point for players who want building actions assigned for faster access, while Custom is better when you already have a preferred PlayStation layout. Fortnite’s available options can vary with the active game mode. Epic’s current instructions are in its guides to controller mapping and PC controller configuration.

Sensitivity and dead-zone basics

  • Look sensitivity: Higher values turn faster but can make precise aiming more difficult.
  • Aim-down-sights sensitivity: A lower value can make fine aiming easier.
  • Build and edit sensitivity: Higher values can speed up construction and editing but may feel less controlled.
  • Dead zones: Lower values respond sooner but can reveal stick drift. Higher values can hide minor drift at the cost of a larger movement threshold.

There is no universally best sensitivity. Change one setting at a time and test it in a low-pressure mode. Do not use an extreme dead zone to disguise severe hardware drift; that usually harms aiming and indicates that the controller may need cleaning, repair, or replacement.

If Fortnite does not recognize the controller

1. Test USB before troubleshooting Bluetooth

  • Try another USB port.
  • Try another micro-USB cable.
  • Confirm the cable supports data, not just charging.
  • Reconnect the controller and press PS.
  • Close and relaunch Fortnite after Windows detects the controller.

2. Check whether Windows sees it

Check the Windows Bluetooth device list for a wireless connection, or use Windows’ controller test tools for a USB connection. If Windows does not detect the controller, the problem is not yet Fortnite-specific. Possible causes include a damaged cable, a weak controller battery, disabled Bluetooth, a Bluetooth driver problem, or the controller remaining connected to the PS4.

3. Close competing input software

Temporarily close Steam, DS4Windows, other controller remappers, virtual joystick tools, macro software, and remote-play applications. Two input layers can expose both the physical and virtual controller, producing duplicate buttons, missed inputs, or menus that move by themselves.

Restart Fortnite after changing the controller software. Use either direct input, Steam Input, or DS4Windows—not multiple translators at once.

Use DS4Windows only when direct input fails

Some Windows games expect an Xbox-style XInput controller rather than a PlayStation-style or DirectInput device. DS4Windows can translate a DualShock 4 into a virtual Xbox 360/XInput controller, which may make Fortnite recognize it more reliably.

  1. Download DS4Windows from its official project page, not an unofficial mirror.
  2. Install the required components when prompted.
  3. Connect the controller by USB or Bluetooth.
  4. Confirm that DS4Windows displays the controller.
  5. Choose an Xbox 360/XInput-style virtual output profile if Fortnite does not respond to the native controller.
  6. Start Fortnite and test the controls.
  7. If the controller appears twice, enable the software’s device-hiding option or close other input software.

DS4Windows is a fallback, not a requirement for every Fortnite installation. Its official download information describes support for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Adding it also adds setup complexity and another possible source of driver or duplicate-input problems.

Why Fortnite may show Xbox button prompts

A DualShock 4 can work correctly while Fortnite displays Xbox-style buttons. This usually happens when the controller reaches the game through XInput emulation, Steam Input, or another translation layer. The game is showing the virtual controller’s layout rather than identifying the physical PlayStation shell.

  • Xbox A is usually the PlayStation Cross button.
  • Xbox B is usually Circle.
  • Xbox X is usually Square.
  • Xbox Y is usually Triangle.

Do not assume that native PlayStation glyphs will always appear. Prompt behavior depends on whether Fortnite receives a native device, a DirectInput device, a Steam-translated device, or a virtual Xbox controller.

Common problems and fixes

It pairs but Fortnite ignores it

  1. Close Fortnite.
  2. Close Steam and every controller remapper.
  3. Reconnect the controller.
  4. Confirm that Windows detects it.
  5. Relaunch Fortnite.
  6. If it still fails, use one XInput translation layer, such as DS4Windows.

It works in menus but not in a match

Check the controller tab, the active game mode, and the selected controller configuration. Some Fortnite settings depend on the active mode. Restart the game after changing the connection method or controller software.

Bluetooth is unavailable

Your PC may lack Bluetooth, or Bluetooth may be disabled. Check Windows Bluetooth settings and the adapter driver. A desktop without built-in Bluetooth needs a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter. USB is the immediate workaround.

Inputs are duplicated or the menu moves by itself

Close Steam or DS4Windows and reconnect the controller. If you use DS4Windows, hide the physical controller so Fortnite sees only the virtual controller. Never run Steam Input and DS4Windows together while diagnosing the problem.

The analog stick drifts

Test the controller outside Fortnite, then raise the affected stick’s dead zone slightly. If drift continues at a normal setting, clean or repair the controller. A large dead zone may conceal hardware failure but makes aiming less responsive.

The headset or microphone does not work through the controller

Bluetooth feature limitations can affect the DualShock 4 headphone jack and other functions on non-Sony devices. Use a headset connected directly to the PC or through USB, and use USB for the controller if you need the most consistent feature support.

Which connection method should you choose?

Method Advantages Trade-offs
USB cable Simple, stable, easy to diagnose, and charges the controller Requires a cable and limits movement
Built-in Bluetooth Wireless and requires no cable during play Uses battery power and may have feature or pairing limitations
Bluetooth USB adapter Adds wireless support to a PC without Bluetooth Requires extra hardware and drivers
Sony USB wireless adapter Official wireless accessory Older hardware may be difficult or expensive to find
DS4Windows Useful when a game needs XInput Requires installation and can conflict with other input layers

For most players, the sensible order is USB first, Bluetooth second, and DS4Windows only if Fortnite does not recognize the direct connection. You do not need Steam, a Sony adapter, or a replacement controller simply to use a working DualShock 4.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a PS4 controller without DS4Windows?

Yes. Try a data-capable USB cable or direct Windows Bluetooth first. DS4Windows is only needed when Fortnite does not accept the controller’s native input path.

Can I use a charging cable?

Only if it also supports data. A power-only micro-USB cable can light the controller without allowing Windows or Fortnite to receive input.

Is Steam required to use the controller?

No. Fortnite installed through the Epic Games Launcher can be used without Steam. Steam Input is an optional translation layer, not a requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I connect more than one controller?

Windows and Fortnite may support multiple gamepads, but behavior depends on the game mode, PC configuration, and input software. Connect and test them one at a time, and avoid exposing duplicate physical and virtual devices.

Will a third-party PS4-style controller work?

It may, but compatibility depends on how the device identifies itself to Windows. A controller that exposes XInput is generally more straightforward for PC games than one that only exposes PlayStation-style or DirectInput input.
