Use Steam Input to make your Steam Controller send the keyboard keys and mouse actions a game already recognizes. For games without gamepad support, bind keyboard and mouse commands—not gamepad-only movement or camera controls.
Set up the controller in Steam

Open Steam and start the game’s controller configuration. For the 2015 Steam Controller, Steam’s troubleshooting guidance recommends running Steam in Big Picture Mode and enabling the Steam Overlay first. Client menu labels can change over time.

Assign keyboard keys or mouse actions to the controller’s buttons and other inputs. Steam describes “Directional Pad” and “Button Pad” as flexible input styles that can send keyboard, mouse, or gamepad commands. See Steam Input: A Guide to Steam Input.

Test the layout in the game. Adjust the bindings to match the game’s controls, including movement, aiming, shortcuts, and any menu actions you need.

Choose bindings based on the game

Fix a controller configuration that does not respond

Steam button does not open the overlay: Check that the Steam Overlay is enabled. Steam calls the overlay vital to Steam Controller functionality in its troubleshooting guidance.

Bindings do not work in-game: Reopen the game’s controller configuration and verify that you assigned the intended keyboard or mouse commands. If the game lacks gamepad support, avoid gamepad-only movement and camera styles.

The overlay or configuration still fails: Steam recommends checking for conflicting third-party software, disabling external launcher overlays, and restarting the Steam client. Follow the guidance in Steam Controller Troubleshooting.
Which Steam Controller model do these steps cover?
Steam’s troubleshooting page covers the Steam Controller (2015) and directs owners of the Steam Controller (2026) to a separate support article. The Big Picture Mode and troubleshooting steps above are for the 2015 model; consult Steam’s current support page for the 2026 model rather than assuming its setup is identical. Steam says Big Picture Mode supports the Steam Controller, official Xbox controllers, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers.
