Use AI to widen the possibilities, not to decide what your work means. Start with a premise or constraint of your own, ask for questions and contrasting directions, then step away from the tool to choose, reshape, and write in your own voice. That approach is useful for game concepts, characters, quests, mechanics, and other creative work because it keeps your point of view and final decisions with you.

What does it mean to use AI as a brainstorming partner?

It means treating a generative AI tool as a source of prompts, alternatives, and challenges—not as the author of your creative direction. You bring the premise, the audience, the values, and the taste. The tool can help you examine possibilities, but you decide which ones deserve to become part of the work and how they should be expressed.

That distinction matters because a polished suggestion can feel more original or settled than it really is. If you ask for a finished game concept and accept the answer largely unchanged, the tool has made many of the decisions that give a concept its identity. If you instead ask it to expose assumptions, suggest opposing approaches, or pose questions, you retain more room to make those decisions yourself.

For a game creator, the starting point could be a player experience you want to create, a personal observation, a setting detail, a mechanic you want to explore, or a constraint such as “the story must work without dialogue.” The seed need not be brilliant. Its job is to give the conversation a direction that began with you.

Why can AI help with ideas while making them feel less distinctive?

AI assistance can improve some measures of idea quality while narrowing the range of ideas people produce. A 2025 analysis in Nature Human Behaviour reported that ChatGPT improved the average creativity of individual ideas but reduced diversity in the pool of ideas. A 2026 study of 212 participants similarly found higher-quality ideas among AI-assisted participants, while unaided participants produced more ideas and greater flexibility.

Those findings are a reason to pay attention to the shape of your session, not a guarantee about every creative task. The studies used controlled tasks, and results may differ with the prompt, timing, expertise, task, and social context. Still, the practical risk is easy to recognize: if you ask for a list and keep the first few plausible answers, you can end up with several variations on one direction rather than genuinely different possibilities.

Creative voice is not just a distinctive sentence style. It also lives in what you notice, what you care about, which trade-offs you accept, and what you choose to leave out. A brainstorming session can support that voice when it gives you more material to judge. It can weaken your sense of ownership when the tool makes the central choices and you only polish its result.

How should you start a brainstorming session?

Begin with a human seed and a clear boundary. Before opening the tool, write down a rough idea, an observation, or a few requirements; then use the AI to question and expand that starting point rather than replace it.

Write a seed in your own words

Make the seed concrete enough to guide the session. For example, a game designer might note: “I want players to feel protective of a place they cannot fully understand.” That is an illustrative prompt seed, not a formula; its value is that it captures a creative intention you can evaluate later suggestions against.

Name what must remain yours

Write down a small set of non-negotiables before asking for ideas. They might include the intended player feeling, a perspective you want to explore, a subject you will not treat as a joke, or a design limitation you want to preserve. These constraints help you recognize when an answer is clever but wrong for your project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a useful scope

Ask about one part of the problem at a time. “Help me think through possible ways a player could learn about a ruined settlement without dialogue” gives you a more manageable conversation than “Design my game.” A focused scope also makes it easier to tell which suggestions are relevant and which assumptions need checking.

What should you ask AI to do?

Ask for work that increases your ability to think: questions, alternatives, counterarguments, unusual combinations, and constraints. Emory Responsible AI recommends clear, focused, neutral prompts aligned with the goal and an alternating process in which people discuss AI suggestions while keeping creative direction and final decisions human-led.

Ask it to reveal assumptions

Try: “What assumptions am I making about the player, the setting, or the problem? Ask me questions rather than solving them.” This can surface premises you have not examined. Treat the answers as leads for your own thinking, not as proof that an assumption is true.

Request directions that differ in premise

Try: “Give me five distinct directions for this idea. Explain how each differs in player experience, central tension, and what it asks the player to notice. Avoid rewriting the same premise with different names.” Asking for differences by underlying experience makes it easier to spot near-duplicates than asking for five “creative” ideas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Invite disagreement and edge cases

Try: “What might a skeptical player find confusing, unconvincing, or frustrating?” Or: “What is an edge case this design does not handle?” A useful response may expose a gap or help you sharpen the intention. It does not establish what actual players will think; that requires appropriate feedback and testing.

Use questions to make an idea more specific

Try: “Ask me six questions that would make this concept more specific to my interests and intended audience. Do not propose answers until I respond.” Answering the questions yourself helps keep the source of the project’s details and priorities visible.

Ask for strange combinations before polished pitches

Try: “Suggest combinations between this premise and three ideas that seem initially unrelated. Explain the tension each combination creates, and do not turn them into finished pitches.” You can also ask for opposing directions, such as intimate versus expansive, playful versus unsettling, or player-led discovery versus explicit instruction. The point is not to use every contrast; it is to prevent the session from converging too early.

How do you get variety instead of near-duplicate ideas?

Request divergence before asking the tool to organize or rank its answers. Generate contrasting possibilities first, inspect the differences yourself, and only then decide whether comparison or refinement would help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set the question and constraints. State the part of the project you are exploring, the human seed behind it, and the few requirements that matter.
  2. Ask for contrasting routes. Request alternatives that change the central tension, player role, emotional register, or way information is discovered—not just the setting or terminology.
  3. Probe for difference. Ask what each route would make the player do, notice, or feel. If the answers are essentially the same, ask for a direction with a different premise.
  4. Ask for an outlier. Request one option that challenges your current assumptions or combines elements in an unfamiliar way. You remain free to reject it.
  5. Do not rank too soon. Ranking makes sense only after you have enough range to compare. Early rankings can turn a narrow set of suggestions into the session’s default path.
  6. Keep your own alternatives in the mix. Add ideas that appeared before the session or while reading the suggestions. The AI’s list should not become the complete boundary of what is possible.

This sequence is consistent with the broader evidence that quality and diversity can move in different directions. The goal is not to maximize the number of outputs from a tool. It is to create a useful field of options that still leaves room for your own judgment and invention.

How do you keep the final choices human-led?

Separate generating possibilities from selecting them. Copy options that interest you into your own notes, close the AI tool, and choose based on your audience, experience, ethics, and taste.

For each candidate, ask what you actually value about it. Does it connect to the original intention? Does it make a trade-off you are willing to own? Is it interesting because it reflects your project, or merely because it sounds polished? Could you explain why you chose it without pointing to the fact that the tool suggested it?

MIT’s Office of the Vice President for Research says, “AI should support—not replace—scholarly judgment, originality, and accountability.” That guidance concerns scholarly work, but its distinction between assistance and responsibility is useful for creative decisions too. The creator remains accountable for the direction and the finished work.

Keep a human-only selection stage even if the session is productive. The pause helps distinguish your response to an idea from the momentum of a conversation in which each generated answer leads to another. You might mark options as “keep,” “change,” “combine,” or “reject,” and write a short reason for each keep. The reason is yours; it is not a score supplied by the model.

How do you revise AI-assisted ideas in your own voice?

Do not treat a suggested passage as finished language. Use the useful underlying idea, then make the choices that give it your perspective: the details you notice, the examples you use, the rhythm you prefer, and the opinions you are prepared to stand behind.

Move from abstraction to a detail you chose

If a suggestion says a world feels “haunting,” ask what specific sound, object, encounter, or absence would create that feeling in your project. Replace broad mood words with details that belong to the setting and the experience you want to make. The tool can offer possibilities, but you should decide which details have meaning in context.

Make the idea answerable to your intent

For every element you keep, ask why it belongs. A mechanic, character, or narrative turn should not survive solely because it is dramatic or neatly phrased. It should serve a purpose you can describe in your own terms, including any cost or complication it introduces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rewrite, rather than just smooth

Editing means more than swapping synonyms. Change the emphasis, structure, image, and point of view until the work reflects your decisions. If the sentence or concept still feels like something you would not have chosen, revise further or discard it.

Notice what you naturally remove

Your voice can show up in omissions as much as additions. You may reject a familiar twist, simplify a premise, or keep an unresolved tension because that is what feels honest to you. Those choices are not problems to fix merely because the generated answer proposed a more conventional route.

A 2026 preregistered experiment with 273 participants found that editing increased psychological ownership. Iterative prompting helped when editing was unavailable, but fully manual writing retained the highest ownership among the workflows studied. In a separate 2026 CHI study totaling 1,126 participants across two experiments, model-led rewriting improved idea quality while reducing diversity and perceived ownership. Reflective, human-led modes using suggestions or questions also improved quality while preserving diversity and ownership. These results support a practical preference for asking questions and editing ideas yourself rather than handing over a one-shot rewrite; they do not predict exactly how every creator will experience every tool.

How can you compare brainstorming workflows?

Judge a workflow by whether it supports the kind of creative work you want to do, not simply by how much text it produces. These questions help you see whether the session leaves you with real choices and a result you can own.

What to assess Ask yourself What a useful process protects
Control Did I set the direction and make the final choices? Human responsibility for premise, values, point of view, and selection
Divergence Did I get genuinely different options or near-duplicates? Room to consider alternatives before settling on one path
Ownership Can I explain and stand behind each creative decision? A clear connection between the finished work and your judgment
Voice fidelity Does the revised work contain experiences, preferences, and language that belong to me? Specificity that comes from deliberate human choices
Reliability and privacy Have I checked claims, and am I allowed to share this input with the tool? Fact-checking and protection of sensitive material
Transparency Can I explain what the AI did and disclose it when required? An accurate account of the tool’s contribution

A workflow can perform well on one measure and poorly on another. For example, a large collection of suggestions is not necessarily diverse, and a polished output does not by itself demonstrate ownership. Decide what matters for the particular task before choosing how much help to ask for.

How should you check facts, quotes, and attribution?

Treat AI output as a draft of possibilities, not as evidence. Verify every factual claim, quotation, citation, name, date, and statistic against a reliable source before including it in work that depends on accuracy.

The American Psychological Association’s guidance emphasizes human oversight, including vetting output and citing uses. York’s guidance recommends documenting prompts and tools, fact-checking outputs, protecting confidential information, and not treating AI as an author. These are institutional guidelines rather than universal rules for every project, so check the requirements that apply to your school, employer, publisher, funder, or jurisdiction.

  • Open the cited source yourself and check that it supports the claim as phrased.
  • Confirm that quotations are exact and attributed to the right person or publication.
  • Check names, dates, and statistics rather than copying them from a generated answer.
  • Keep a record of the tool and prompts when your workplace, class, publisher, or project requires documentation.
  • Do not list an AI system as the responsible author of work for which a person must answer.

If a factual suggestion cannot be verified, leave it out or rewrite the passage so it does not depend on that claim. A plausible-sounding answer is not a substitute for a source.

How do you protect private or unpublished creative material?

Do not submit confidential, personal, unpublished, or proprietary material to a tool unless its use is approved for that material. This includes details that are not public even if they seem like convenient context for a brainstorming prompt.

Before sharing project information, check the tool’s applicable privacy terms and your organization’s rules. A workplace, school, publisher, funder, or project agreement may impose requirements that are stricter than your personal preference. If you cannot establish that a tool is approved, keep the prompt general, remove identifying details, or brainstorm without entering the protected material.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

You can often ask about the creative problem without sharing the confidential content itself. For example, describe the shape of a design challenge in general terms and withhold character names, unreleased plot details, personal accounts, or proprietary mechanics. Generalization does not automatically make every input safe, so use the rules that apply to your work.

What does a practical session look like from start to finish?

A focused session has a human beginning and end. Use the tool to challenge and widen your thinking, then take responsibility for choosing and developing what remains.

  1. Write your seed offline. Record the premise, intended audience or player experience, and up to three non-negotiable constraints.
  2. Choose one question. Decide whether you need assumptions surfaced, alternative directions, a skeptical response, or questions that would make the idea more specific.
  3. Prompt for divergence. Request contrasting routes and require the tool to explain how their underlying premises differ.
  4. Ask follow-up questions. Probe a route’s assumptions, edge cases, and potential player experience without asking for a complete finished piece.
  5. Save only the useful options. Transfer them to your own notes, adding your own ideas and questions alongside them.
  6. Close the tool and select. Decide what to keep, combine, change, or reject using your own priorities.
  7. Make the creative rewrite. Develop the chosen direction in your own language and revise every AI-assisted sentence or concept you retain.
  8. Verify and document. Check factual material, keep records if required, and disclose assistance where the context or policy calls for it.

If you finish with a more specific understanding of what you want to make—even if you reject every generated suggestion—the session has served as a brainstorming partner rather than a substitute creator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI brainstorm with me if I do not have a clear idea yet?

Yes, but begin with a small personal observation, question, or constraint rather than asking the tool to define the whole project. If you truly have no starting point, ask it to interview you with questions and use your answers to discover what you want to explore.

Should I tell people that AI helped me brainstorm?

Disclosure depends on the context and the rules that apply to your work; a school, publisher, employer, funder, or jurisdiction may have its own requirements. Describe the tool’s contribution accurately rather than implying that it made decisions or did work that you did yourself.

Can I use an AI-generated idea in a game pitch?

That depends on the pitch’s submission rules, any agreements governing the project, and whether the idea contains material you are authorized to use. Review those requirements before sharing the pitch, and make sure you can explain and stand behind the creative decisions in it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the AI’s suggestion is better than my original idea?

You can choose it, but first identify what makes it work and decide whether that quality serves your project. Reworking the suggestion around your own priorities turns the choice into a deliberate creative decision instead of an automatic handoff.
