You can use AI in game development without sacrificing quality by starting with bounded tasks whose results can be checked—such as drafting code, generating test cases, summarizing bugs, or analyzing telemetry—and requiring human review before anything reaches players. Define acceptance criteria first, test generated work like any other change, and keep people accountable for game direction, player-facing quality, ethics, and release approval.
Which game-development tasks are a good fit for AI?
AI is most useful when a task has a clear input, a result you can inspect, and a reliable way to test or reject that result. It is less suitable as an unreviewed authority over decisions that define the game or affect players directly.

Unity’s 2026 report, based on 300 respondents surveyed in 2025, lists these uses of AI in game development:
| Use reported | Share of respondents | Practical role |
|---|---|---|
| Coding assistance | 62% | Draft small code changes, explain unfamiliar code, suggest tests, or help create internal tools. |
| Writing and narrative design | 44% | Explore alternatives or generate drafts for a writer to shape and approve. |
| NPC behavior | 40% | Explore behavior ideas and tuning while testing predictability, exploits, and player trust. |
| Automated playtesting | 35% | Replay scenarios, generate test cases, and surface crashes or regressions. |
| Concept art and game assets | 35% | Explore visual directions or variations that still need style, consistency, and rights review. |
| Moderation | 35% | Classify or prioritize reports and content for review, with attention to errors and appeals. |
| Adaptive difficulty | 34% | Explore tuning approaches, then check fairness, accessibility, and player confidence. |
| Character animations | 30% | Generate or explore motion ideas that require artistic and technical approval. |
| Code QA | 28% | Assist with code checks or issue discovery, without treating a clean result as proof of quality. |
These figures describe reported use among survey respondents; they do not measure whether a use improved a game or establish that one task is safe to automate in every production. The same report says 73% reported improved efficiency and 62% enhanced decision-making. Those are respondent-reported outcomes, not a guarantee that an AI feature will improve a particular project.

High-fit support work
Start with work that is reversible and reviewable: code drafts, documentation, tooling scripts, test cases, bug summaries, content variations, and internal analysis. A developer can inspect a code suggestion; a tester can reproduce a suspected bug; a writer or designer can accept, revise, or discard a draft. The value is often speed and breadth of exploration rather than replacing a specialist. In Unity’s report, Josh Loveridge of Stratton Studios described using language models for rapid prototyping, system-design validation, tuning logic, tooling documentation, interpretation, and internal planning, emphasizing speed and breadth rather than replacement.
Work that needs tighter supervision
NPC behavior, adaptive systems, narrative, art, animation, and moderation can affect player experience in ways that are difficult to reduce to a single pass/fail check. AI can help generate options or sort a large queue, but it cannot by itself establish that a scene feels right, an opponent is fair, an animation reads clearly, or a moderation decision is justified. Make a named human owner responsible for those judgments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do you set a quality bar before using AI?
Write down what “good enough to merge” means before asking a model for an output. Criteria should match the change: correctness and performance for code, tone and continuity for dialogue, rights and style consistency for assets, or error rates and appeals for moderation.
ISO/IEC TS 25058:2024 provides guidance for evaluating AI systems using a quality model. It can inform an evaluation plan, but it does not substitute for game-specific acceptance criteria. For a particular feature, make the criteria concrete enough that a reviewer can accept, reject, or request changes without guessing what the team intended.
- Functional correctness: What must the feature do, and what must it never do?
- Performance: Which frame-time, memory, loading, or latency budgets apply?
- Player experience: What do fairness, readability, pacing, and tone mean for this feature?
- Accessibility and localization: Which supported input methods, accessibility needs, languages, and text constraints must be respected?
- Safety and policy: What ratings, community standards, privacy rules, or moderation requirements apply?
- Recovery: How can the feature be disabled, reverted, or replaced if it fails?
Do not use “the output looks plausible” as an acceptance criterion. A plausible code patch may introduce a regression; a convincing line of dialogue may contradict a character; a successful test run may omit the situation that breaks the game.

What does a quality-preserving AI workflow look like?
Separate proposing work from approving it. A generated result is a candidate, not a trusted change: it should pass the same engineering and creative gates as work produced without AI, plus checks appropriate to its source, data, and behavior.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Choose one bounded task. Start with a small feature, test, document, or internal workflow. Avoid giving an AI system broad authority over a live build or an entire project.
- State the acceptance criteria and constraints. Specify the expected behavior, relevant engine or project context, performance limits, style requirements, and what the system must not change. Do not include secrets or unnecessary sensitive material in prompts.
- Review the candidate output. Have the relevant developer, designer, writer, artist, or moderation lead inspect it. Check assumptions, dependencies, compatibility, style, and whether the result actually meets the criteria.
- Record its provenance and decision. Keep the prompt, model and version, input data, output, reviewer, and approval or rejection decision. This gives the team a way to trace what entered the project and why.
- Test behavior, not just syntax. Run appropriate unit and integration tests, then add playthrough, performance, exploit, accessibility, or localization checks where the change warrants them.
- Release behind suitable controls. Keep human approval before shipping. For a live or autonomous feature, arrange monitoring, a way for an operator to intervene, and a rollback path before enabling it.
- Measure the result and revisit the decision. Compare relevant quality and production indicators with the project’s own baseline. Pause or roll back when the feature makes those outcomes worse.
ISO/IEC DIS 42105 describes oversight across the AI lifecycle, including the ability to monitor and control a system, understand its behavior, intervene, and address automation bias. In practice, oversight means a reviewer or operator has both the authority and the information needed to challenge an output—not merely a nominal approval button.
How can AI help with coding and QA without making the game worse?
Use AI as an assistant to engineering work, not as a substitute for the test and review process. Coding assistance was the most commonly listed use in Unity’s 2026 report at 62%; automated playtesting was reported by 35% and code QA by 28% of respondents surveyed in 2025.
For code and tools
Keep the change small enough to understand and review. Ask for an explanation of assumptions and for relevant tests alongside a code draft, then inspect the actual diff, check dependencies and security implications, and run the project’s normal test suite. Generated tests also need review: a test can pass while checking the wrong behavior or simply restating the implementation’s assumption.
A useful minimum gate is to confirm that the game boots, then test the changed path and nearby systems. Ben Hymers of Two Point Studios, quoted in Unity’s report, recommends investing time in automated testing and notes that even a minimal boot check can improve robustness. A boot test is a baseline, not evidence that a feature is correct, balanced, or ready to ship.

For playtesting and QA
Automated systems can replay scenarios, generate combinations a tester might not try first, detect crashes, and flag regressions. They are good at repeated checks against stated expectations. Human testers remain necessary to judge whether a mechanic is fun, whether difficulty feels fair, whether pacing works, and whether visual or audio feedback communicates clearly.
For an AI-driven NPC or adaptive feature, add tests for edge cases and adversarial player behavior. Decide whether behavior must be deterministic for a given situation; if so, test that requirement explicitly. Also test what happens when the AI component is unavailable, produces an invalid result, or encounters a situation outside its intended scope. A safe fallback should preserve a playable experience rather than leaving the game in an undefined state.
How should teams handle AI-generated NPCs, stories, art, and moderation?
Use generated material as a proposal or assistive signal, then apply the relevant discipline’s review. The more directly an output affects a player, the more important it is to test consistency, fairness, accessibility, and the consequences of mistakes.
NPC behavior and adaptive difficulty
Use AI to explore behavior patterns or tuning options, but test whether the result can be exploited, becomes unpredictable, or undermines player trust. Check a range of player approaches rather than a single intended path. Confirm that difficulty changes are understandable and do not create avoidable barriers for players who use different input methods or need accessibility accommodations.
Narrative, visual assets, and animation
Generated drafts and variations can speed up exploration, but a human creative lead should decide what belongs in the game. Review narrative for voice, continuity, and appropriateness; review art and animation for style consistency, legibility, technical fit, and rights or provenance concerns. A high-volume output is not a finished asset pipeline: selection, revision, integration, and quality checks remain part of the work.

Moderation and player analytics
AI can help prioritize or classify large volumes of player content and telemetry, but errors can affect real players. Track false positives and false negatives, provide a path for appeals where moderation decisions affect players, and keep an audit trail. Check for disparate impact and privacy concerns rather than evaluating a classifier only on aggregate accuracy.
How do you secure an AI-assisted development pipeline?
Treat AI tools, their inputs, and their outputs as part of the software supply and security process. NIST SP 800-218A adds generative-AI-specific secure-development practices to the Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF), covering AI development across the software lifecycle.

For online games, verification also has a standards dimension. ITU-T F.746.28, approved on 2026-08-29, specifies game-data categories, testing and diagnostics, and interfaces for verification results for AI-based online games. Its scope is online-game verification; it should not be read as a universal certification that an AI feature is safe or suitable for every game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you tell whether AI is improving quality?
Measure the outcomes that matter for the task, not the quantity of generated output. Unity’s report records respondent-reported efficiency and decision-making benefits, but a studio still needs project-level evidence to decide whether a particular workflow is worthwhile.

Choose indicators before rollout and compare them with an appropriate baseline. Depending on the feature, track:
- Defects that escape into a build or release, crash rate, and regression frequency.
- Frame time, memory use, or latency where runtime performance is affected.
- Test coverage alongside the usefulness and failure rate of those tests.
- False-positive and false-negative rates for classification or moderation, plus appeal outcomes.
- Player complaints, satisfaction, retention, or other project-relevant player outcomes.
- Human review time, including the effort needed to correct or reject generated work.
Interpret the measures together. A faster drafting step may not be a net gain if review takes longer, defects rise, or players encounter worse behavior. Stop or roll back a feature when its quality indicators regress; do not treat increased throughput as a reason to waive the original acceptance criteria.
How should you compare AI tools or workflows?
Compare options on the task and its consequences, not on a broad claim that one model is “better.” The IEEE Transactions on Games responsible-AI agenda highlights human control, transparency, fairness, privacy, accountability, and player and organizational outcomes—useful dimensions alongside practical production fit.
| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it fit this task and the engine or CI workflow? | A useful assistant must fit the actual production path, not just produce an impressive demo. |
| How severe is a failure, and how much review does it require? | A mistaken internal summary and an incorrect player-facing moderation decision have different consequences. |
| Can the result be reproduced and observed? | Reproducibility and logs help teams diagnose changes and explain how an output was accepted. |
| What are the latency and runtime costs? | They matter especially when a system affects a player-facing or online interaction. |
| What data, privacy, and copyright exposure does it introduce? | Inputs and outputs need review for appropriate use and provenance. |
| Can the team intervene and roll back? | Control and recovery matter when behavior changes after deployment or fails unexpectedly. |
| Does it support accessibility and localization needs? | Quality should hold across the players, languages, and modes the game supports. |
| Do measured outcomes justify total review cost? | Speed is not a benefit if correction effort or player-facing defects erase it. |
What should a small studio do first?
A small team can apply the same quality principles without building a large AI program. Pick one low-consequence task, document the expected result, and make sure a person with the right expertise can review it before it enters the project.
- Choose a contained task such as drafting a test, summarizing a bug report, or creating internal documentation.
- Write a short acceptance checklist and identify the person who will review the output.
- Keep a record of the model and version, prompt, relevant input, output, and decision.
- Run the ordinary checks for that work and add any specific edge-case or provenance check it needs.
- Compare review time and quality outcomes with the existing process before expanding the use.

Do I need to tell players that a game uses AI?
Disclosure requirements can depend on the platform, jurisdiction, and how the AI is used; the evidence here does not establish a universal rule. Check applicable platform policies and local requirements, especially if AI affects player-facing content or decisions.
Is AI useful for a game made by one person?
It can be useful for bounded tasks such as test drafting, documentation, or exploring alternatives, provided the developer can evaluate the result. A solo developer still needs to reserve time for review, testing, and correction rather than treating generated output as finished work.
