Some 8BitDo controllers work with Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro—but compatibility depends on the exact model, operating system and connection method. Check 8BitDo’s Apple compatibility list for your controller, set it to D-Input mode, and confirm the required OS version before pairing. An Apple-compatible controller still will not work in every game.
Check whether your exact 8BitDo controller is supported
8BitDo’s Apple list covers selected models, not every controller in the brand’s lineup. Find your exact model on the current compatibility page and check its entry for supported Apple devices, minimum OS versions and connection options. A compatibility claim for one model should not be assumed to apply to another in the same product family.

The page gives general minimums of iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3, macOS 13.2, tvOS 16.3 and visionOS 1.1. Some newer entries require later versions—for example, 18.5 for Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller variants—so the individual model listing takes precedence over the general baseline. These are manufacturer-stated requirements, checked in 2026.
Pair it in D-Input mode
- Confirm support and the OS floor. Look up your exact controller on 8BitDo’s Apple compatibility page and make sure the device meets the minimum version shown for that model.
- Select D-Input mode. 8BitDo specifies D-Input for pairing controllers with Apple devices. Use the model’s instructions to change modes; the precise button sequence can vary.
- Pair through the Apple device’s Bluetooth settings. Follow the controller’s model-specific pairing instructions, then select it from the device’s Bluetooth menu when it appears.
- Check the game separately. Test the controller in a game or app that supports MFi controllers. Apple-device compatibility does not mean every Mac game, emulator or app will recognize it.
For wired play, check the exact model’s Apple-list entry and its instructions. 8BitDo lists USB wired support on macOS and on iOS or iPadOS devices with USB-C ports for models that specify it. The Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox is an exception: its Apple connection is Bluetooth only.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Switch and Switch 2 via Bluetooth. Switch 2 compatibility requires the controller to be updated to the latest firmware.
- Hall Effect joysticks with wear-resistant metal rings.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad - Recalibrated for a clicky yet smooth feel.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software.
- Wake-on-shake (not supported on Switch 2). 6-axis motion control. Rumble Vibration. Turbo function.
Know what works in games—and what may not
8BitDo says Apple-device games and software must support MFi controllers. It also says rumble and motion control are currently unsupported on Apple devices, even where a controller’s hardware feature list advertises them. Treat those hardware features as platform-dependent, not as a promise that they will work in an Apple game.
Up to four controllers can connect simultaneously, according to 8BitDo, provided the game supports multiplayer. Connecting several controllers alone does not add multiplayer support to a game.
Rank #2
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.

Choose the right Mac firmware utility
Use 8BitDo’s software according to the exact controller model, not simply because the utility runs on a Mac.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Upgrade Tool: 8BitDo’s Upgrade Tool download supports macOS 10.13 and later. The manufacturer describes automatic controller recognition, online firmware downloads, manual update mode and automatic entry into update mode. It notes that old or discontinued products may not enter update mode automatically.
- Ultimate Software V2: 8BitDo’s Ultimate Software V2 provides firmware and customization functions for listed supported devices. Check its macOS device matrix before installing it for a particular controller.
Some Ultimate Software V2 devices need a model-specific button combination while switched off and connected by USB to be recognized: 8BitDo lists LB+RB for the Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller and L1+R1 for the Ultimate 2C Bluetooth Controller. These are not universal update steps. Follow the instructions for your model, and use a USB connection only where that model and target device support it.
Rank #3

- Integrated Charging Dock - A seamlessly integrated charging dock keeps your controller always charged and ready to play. Automatically reconnects when removed from the dock.
- Vibration and Motion control (for Switch only). Turbo function. Wake-on-shake. Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2.
- Trigger Mode Switch - Easily switch between linear Hall Effect triggers and non-linear tactile triggers for optimal control across different gaming scenarios.
A concrete option: 8BitDo Pro 3
The 8BitDo Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad is one example on 8BitDo’s Apple-compatible list. The manufacturer’s comparison table shows Bluetooth and wired Apple connectivity for this model; confirm the listing and your device’s port before choosing a connection. Its published hardware specifications include TMR joysticks, Hall Effect triggers, extra bumpers, two back paddles and a tactile D-pad. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results, and they do not establish that every feature works on Apple platforms.
8BitDo lists a 1000mAh battery capacity for the Pro 3; capacity is not a battery-life estimate. The product page also identifies a Mobile Gaming Clip as compatible and sold separately. That accessory is relevant to phone play, not required for Mac use.
