To use an Xbox controller on Steam, first connect it to your Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC by USB, Bluetooth, or Xbox Wireless. Then open Steam > Settings > Controller and confirm that Steam detects it. Most Xbox controllers work immediately in games with native XInput support; for a game that does not respond, adjust that game’s setting under Properties > Controller.
USB is the best first connection because it is the simplest and most reliable way to separate controller, Windows, Steam, and game-specific problems.

For USB play, use a data-capable cable matching your controller’s port. A charge-only cable may power the controller without allowing Windows to receive input. For Bluetooth, you need a Bluetooth-capable controller and a PC with Bluetooth. For Xbox Wireless, you need a compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows unless your PC has built-in Xbox Wireless support.
Microsoft lists USB, Bluetooth, and Xbox Wireless as supported PC connection methods for current Xbox Wireless Controllers. See Microsoft’s connection guide.
Connect an Xbox controller by USB
- Turn on the controller by pressing the Xbox button.
- Connect it to the PC with a known-good data cable.
- Wait for Windows to detect the controller.
- Open Steam.
- Select Steam > Settings > Controller.
- Confirm that the controller appears in Steam’s controller or detected-device area.
- Launch a controller-compatible game.
The Xbox button will usually remain illuminated while the controller is connected. Games with native Xbox or XInput support typically work without custom mapping.

If Windows does not detect the controller, try another USB port and another cable before changing Steam settings. This is especially important when the controller powers on but provides no input.
Connect an Xbox controller by Bluetooth
This method applies only to Bluetooth-capable Xbox controllers. Some older Xbox One controllers do not include Bluetooth, and Xbox 360 wireless controllers are not standard Bluetooth devices.

Windows 11
- Press the Xbox button to turn on the controller.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button for about three seconds, until the Xbox button begins flashing.
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Add device > Bluetooth.
- Choose the Xbox controller from the list.
- Wait for Windows to report that it is connected.
- Open Steam and check Steam > Settings > Controller.
Microsoft documents the three-second Pair-button step and the Windows 11 Bluetooth path in its Xbox controller setup instructions.
Windows 10
Open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device, select Bluetooth, and choose the controller. Windows labels can vary slightly by build and language.

- Remove or forget the old controller entry in Windows, turn the controller off, and pair it again.
- Turn off Bluetooth on a nearby Xbox, phone, or other device that may capture the controller.
- Replace or recharge the batteries or battery pack.
- Update the controller’s firmware through the Xbox Accessories app over USB.
- Move away from sources of wireless interference and test the controller by USB.
A controller can pair successfully with Windows and still fail in one particular game. If that happens, check the game’s Steam controller setting rather than assuming the Bluetooth connection is broken.
Connect with Xbox Wireless
Xbox Wireless is different from Bluetooth. A generic Bluetooth dongle does not provide Xbox Wireless functionality.
- Connect a compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows to the PC.
- Turn on the controller.
- Press the Pair button on the adapter.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button flashes rapidly.
- Wait for the adapter and controller to pair.
- Open Steam and verify the controller under Steam > Settings > Controller.
Xbox Wireless is useful when the PC lacks Bluetooth or Bluetooth is unreliable. Adapter availability and pricing can change, so check the current product information before buying. You do not need an adapter if USB or Bluetooth already works for your controller and PC.

- Play with your Xbox Wireless Controller on Windows PCs, laptops, and tablets. Not compatible with controllers designed for Xbox 360.
- Use it with PC games, and Xbox One games streamed to Windows 10.
- Simply bind the Adapter to your Wireless Controller to enable the same gaming experience you are used to on Xbox One, including in-game chat and high quality stereo audio.
- Features a 66% smaller design, wireless stereo sound support and the ability to connect up to eight controllers at once, plus up to 4 chat headsets or 2 stereo headsets.
Check the controller in Steam
After connecting the controller, open Steam > Settings > Controller. Confirm that Steam lists it as a detected controller.
Xbox controllers often need no manual configuration. Windows and many PC games communicate with them through the XInput standard, so the game can receive Xbox button and stick input directly.
If you connected the controller after Steam was already running and it does not appear, close and reopen Steam. Also disconnect other gamepads temporarily while testing, since multiple controllers can affect player assignment.
Enable Steam Input for a specific game
Steam Input is a remapping layer. It can translate controller input, provide custom layouts, emulate keyboard and mouse input, and supply community configurations. It is useful for games with weak or unusual controller support, but it is not a universal fix.
- Open Steam.
- Find the game in your library.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Select Controller.
- Test the available setting, such as Use default settings, Enable Steam Input, or Disable Steam Input.
- Close the window and restart the game.
For a game with strong native Xbox support, the default setting or disabled Steam Input may avoid conflicts. Older games, games with unusual controller support, or games that need custom mappings may work better with Steam Input enabled. Steam’s labels can change with client updates, so look for the Controller section even if the wording differs slightly.

Steam’s developer documentation lists Xbox controller categories among supported input devices: Steam Input device support.
Test the controller before blaming Steam
Use this diagnostic chain:
Controller hardware → Windows → Steam → individual game
- Test the controller by USB, even if you plan to play wirelessly.
- Confirm that Windows detects it.
- Check whether Steam lists it under Steam > Settings > Controller.
- Test a second Steam game.
- Use Windows’ game-controller testing interface or the Xbox Accessories app if necessary.
- Restart Steam after reconnecting the controller or changing connection methods.
- Restart the game after changing its Steam Input setting.
This identifies whether the problem is a cable or controller, Windows pairing, Steam detection, or one game’s input configuration.
Update firmware with Xbox Accessories
You do not need the Xbox Accessories app for basic Steam play. It is useful for firmware updates, supported button remapping, controller profiles, and diagnosing wireless problems.
- Install or open the Xbox Accessories app from the Microsoft Store.
- Connect the controller to the PC with a USB cable.
- Let the app identify the controller.
- Install any offered firmware update.
- Disconnect and reconnect the controller.
- If you use Bluetooth, pair it again if necessary.
Consider a firmware update when Bluetooth pairing repeatedly fails, wireless detection is inconsistent, battery readings are wrong, or an Elite controller behaves unexpectedly. Microsoft notes that some controller-management functions require a compatible USB connection. Steam also recommends the Xbox Accessories app and USB connection for certain Xbox controller firmware updates; see Steam’s controller support guidance.

Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Not detected anywhere | Cable, USB port, batteries, or hardware | Try a known-good data cable, another port, and USB connection |
| Windows sees it, but Steam does not | Steam session or software conflict | Close and reopen Steam; disconnect other controllers and remapping tools |
| Steam sees it, but one game does not | Per-game controller configuration | Test Properties > Controller options and restart the game |
| Bluetooth will not pair | Wrong pairing mode, old pairing, low battery, or interference | Forget the old device and pair again with the Pair button held for about three seconds |
| Xbox 360 wireless controller is missing | It is not an ordinary Bluetooth device | Use a compatible Xbox 360 wireless receiver or a wired controller |
| Game shows PlayStation buttons | Game UI or device-identification behavior | Check the game’s controller-prompt or icon setting |
| Elite features are missing | Connection or profile limitations | Update and configure the controller in Xbox Accessories; test USB |
The game shows PlayStation button prompts
The controller may still work correctly. Some games use generic prompts, identify the device through Steam Input, or do not provide Xbox-specific artwork for every input mode. Look for an in-game setting named Xbox button prompts, controller icons, input display, or gamepad type. Steam cannot force Xbox artwork in every game.
The controller works in menus but not during gameplay
Check whether the game is focused on keyboard and mouse input, whether another controller has been assigned as Player 1, and whether Steam Input conflicts with native support. Reconnect the controller, restart the game, and test both the default and opposite Steam Input settings.
The controller keeps disconnecting over Bluetooth
Recharge or replace the batteries, forget and re-pair the controller, update its firmware, and reduce interference from USB 3.0 hubs and other wireless devices. If the problem continues, test USB or Xbox Wireless to determine whether Bluetooth is the source. Steam’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the battery, testing the device with another host, and forgetting and re-pairing it: Steam Bluetooth troubleshooting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The controller connects to the Xbox console instead
Turn off the console or temporarily disable its wireless connection while pairing with the PC. Controllers can remember multiple devices, but switching behavior varies by model and firmware, so do not assume every controller will switch seamlessly.
Which connection method should you choose?
| Method | Best for | Advantages | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB | First setup and troubleshooting | Lowest complexity and reliable input; supports firmware updates | Requires a data cable |
| Bluetooth | Convenient wireless play | No cable or Xbox Wireless adapter when the PC already has Bluetooth | Pairing, interference, and model-specific limitations |
| Xbox Wireless Adapter | Reliable wireless PC play | Uses Xbox Wireless and is useful when Bluetooth is unavailable or unreliable | Requires a compatible adapter |
| Xbox 360 wireless receiver | Xbox 360 wireless controllers | Uses the correct protocol for Xbox 360 wireless hardware | Not interchangeable with ordinary Bluetooth adapters |
Choose USB for simplicity, Bluetooth for convenience, Xbox Wireless when you prefer that protocol or lack suitable Bluetooth, and an Xbox 360 receiver for Xbox 360 wireless hardware.
Steam Link is different from Steam on Windows
These instructions cover Steam running directly on a Windows PC. Steam Link hardware and the Steam Link app have separate controller compatibility rules. For example, Steam’s support documentation lists Xbox Series X controller support over USB on Steam Link but not over Bluetooth. Do not assume that a connection method working in Steam on Windows will work identically through Steam Link. See Steam’s Steam Link controller compatibility information.
Quick Recap
Quick setup checklist
- Use a known-good data cable for the first test.
- Confirm Windows detects the controller.
- Check Steam > Settings > Controller.
- Test a second game.
- Use the game’s Properties > Controller page to test Steam Input.
- Restart the game after changing the setting.
- Update firmware with Xbox Accessories if wireless behavior remains unreliable.
