Short answer: NVIDIA’s GeForce Hotfix Driver 581.94 was a legitimate, targeted response to lower performance reported in some games after Microsoft released Windows 11 update KB5066835. It was not a universal FPS upgrade or guaranteed cure. If you are troubleshooting the issue now, check NVIDIA’s current regular driver first; 581.94 was an emergency release from November 2025 and its fix was expected to move into a later standard driver.

What happened with Windows 11 KB5066835?

Microsoft released cumulative update KB5066835 on October 14, 2025, for Windows 11 version 24H2 and version 25H2. The update corresponded to OS build 26100.6899 on 24H2 and 26200.6899 on 25H2.

After installing the update, some NVIDIA GeForce users reported lower frame rates, poorer frame pacing, and micro-stutter in particular games. NVIDIA later released GeForce Hotfix Display Driver 581.94, dated November 19, 2025, with a note specifically stating that it addressed “lower performance” in some games after installing KB5066835.

That establishes a meaningful connection between the Windows update and the driver mitigation, but it does not prove that every Windows 11 gaming system was affected. Microsoft’s published KB notes described security, graphics, windowing, compatibility, and other platform changes, but did not publicly document a general GeForce gaming-performance regression.

The most accurate description is therefore: some configurations experienced a performance regression after KB5066835, and NVIDIA issued a targeted driver hotfix. The public notes did not establish a detailed technical root cause.

Microsoft’s KB5066835 documentation lists the affected Windows releases and builds. HotHardware’s report documents NVIDIA’s 581.94 hotfix note and release details.

Which Windows versions were involved?

Windows release KB5066835 build Release date
Windows 11 24H2 26100.6899 October 14, 2025
Windows 11 25H2 26200.6899 October 14, 2025

This incident should not be generalized to every Windows 11 version, every GeForce card, or every game. Windows Insider builds, laptop configurations, hybrid-graphics systems, and machines with OEM-customized drivers may behave differently.

What symptoms might indicate the regression?

The official NVIDIA wording was limited to lower performance in some games. Symptoms reported in coverage and user discussions included:

  • Lower average FPS after the Windows update
  • Worse frame pacing or more visible hitching
  • Micro-stutter in a particular title
  • A performance change that appeared soon after KB5066835 was installed

NVIDIA did not publish a definitive list of affected games or GPU models. A game-specific report, a precise percentage loss, or a claim about crashes and black screens should not be treated as part of NVIDIA’s confirmed symptom list without separate evidence.

What was GeForce Hotfix Driver 581.94?

Item Verified detail
Driver GeForce Hotfix Display Driver 581.94
Published November 19, 2025
Base driver Game Ready Driver 581.80
Purpose Mitigate lower performance in some games after KB5066835
Release type Optional hotfix rather than a normal full WHQL release
Distribution Manual download, rather than necessarily through the NVIDIA App

A hotfix is designed to get a narrowly targeted correction to affected users quickly. That speed comes with a shorter validation cycle than a regular Game Ready or Studio release. It is not automatically the best driver for every game, card, laptop, or monitor.

Hotfix changes are normally incorporated into a later standard driver. That is why a current reader should generally choose the latest compatible regular driver from NVIDIA’s official driver page, unless NVIDIA specifically directs them to an archived hotfix.

Should you install 581.94?

During the original incident, affected users could reasonably try it. The hotfix was relevant if all of the following were true:

  • The PC used a supported NVIDIA GeForce GPU.
  • KB5066835 was installed.
  • A repeatable gaming-performance decline began afterward.
  • The user accepted the compatibility risk of a less broadly tested driver.

There was no urgent reason to install 581.94 on a system that was performing normally. It was not a free FPS boost, and it was not intended to fix unrelated shader-compilation stutter, CPU limits, overheating, corrupted game files, overlay conflicts, or a bad game update.

In 2026, treat 581.94 primarily as a historical troubleshooting release. Check for a newer regular Game Ready or Studio driver first. Do not use a third-party driver-download site or a paid “driver updater” to obtain it.

How to check whether KB5066835 is installed

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Open Update history.
  4. Search the installed-update list for KB5066835.
  5. Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and confirm the Windows version and build.

The expected builds associated with the update were 26100.6899 for 24H2 and 26200.6899 for 25H2. Interface labels can change between Windows releases, so the KB number is the most useful identifier.

How to check your active NVIDIA driver

Use any of these version-sensitive paths:

  • NVIDIA Control Panel: open Help → System Information and find Driver version.
  • Device Manager: open Display adapters, select the NVIDIA GPU, choose Properties, then open the Driver tab.
  • DirectX Diagnostic Tool: run dxdiag and inspect the relevant Display tab.

The NVIDIA App can manage normal driver updates, but a special hotfix may need to be downloaded manually from NVIDIA’s support site.

How to install or replace the driver safely

If you are installing a current regular driver—or, where still appropriate, an archived official hotfix—use this process:

  1. Download the package from NVIDIA’s official driver-support page.
  2. Confirm the exact GPU model and Windows edition before starting.
  3. Close games, browsers using GPU acceleration, monitoring tools, and other GPU-heavy applications.
  4. Run the installer with administrator privileges.
  5. Choose Custom installation if you want the installer’s clean-install option.
  6. Restart Windows when prompted.
  7. Test the same game, scene, resolution, graphics settings, upscaling mode, and frame-generation configuration used previously.

A clean installation can remove driver settings that complicate comparison, but it is not automatically required for every driver update. Laptop owners should also check whether their manufacturer requires an OEM-specific driver or power-management profile.

How to test whether performance recovered

Do not judge the result from one different scene or a single unusually high FPS reading. Make the comparison repeatable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use the same game build and save area, benchmark, or repeatable scene.
  • Keep resolution, graphics settings, ray tracing, upscaling, and frame generation consistent.
  • Allow shader compilation to finish before comparing results.
  • Keep overlays either enabled in both tests or disabled in both tests.
  • Record average FPS and, if possible, 1% lows and frame-time behavior.

NVIDIA’s hotfix description establishes its intended fix, but the available evidence does not establish one universal FPS recovery percentage. A change in displayed FPS can also reflect frame generation rather than a change in native rendering performance.

What to do if the hotfix does not help

Work through the likely causes in this order:

  1. Confirm that the performance change is reproducible.
  2. Test another game to determine whether the problem is title-specific.
  3. Install the latest compatible regular NVIDIA driver available for your GPU.
  4. Restart Windows after the driver installation.
  5. Temporarily disable NVIDIA, Steam, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, and monitoring overlays.
  6. Check GPU temperature, clock speeds, power limits, and CPU utilization.
  7. Verify the game files through Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Xbox app, or the relevant launcher.
  8. Clear or rebuild shader caches only using a documented procedure for the game or driver.
  9. Test with frame generation, ray tracing, and upscaling disabled, then re-enable them one at a time.
  10. If the regression began precisely with KB5066835 and persists only on that Windows build, consider Windows recovery or update rollback.

Also account for game patches, anti-cheat updates, BIOS changes, altered power profiles, and thermal throttling before blaming the Windows update. Hybrid-graphics laptops using NVIDIA Optimus or Advanced Optimus can show behavior that differs from desktop PCs.

Should you uninstall KB5066835?

Removing a security update should be a last resort, not the first troubleshooting step. It can reduce the system’s security level and may not be straightforward because Windows cumulative updates can be combined with servicing-stack components.

Microsoft’s documented approach for the relevant package is to inspect installed packages with DISM:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM /Online /Get-Packages

If Microsoft’s current recovery guidance identifies a removable package, the removal command has this form:

DISM /Online /Remove-Package /PackageName:<package-name>

Record the package name exactly, create a backup or recovery plan, and follow current Microsoft documentation rather than copying a command blindly. Microsoft notes that some update components cannot be removed independently, and the ordinary wusa.exe /uninstall method may not apply to the combined servicing-stack and cumulative package.

Before considering rollback, try a current regular NVIDIA driver and controlled testing. If you do roll back, plan to reinstall the security update or move to a later Windows build when a compatible fix is available.

Why “the cure” is too strong

The original headline overstated what the evidence showed. NVIDIA’s wording referred to lower performance in some games, not all games or all GeForce systems. The public note did not promise a universal fix, publish a complete affected-game list, identify every affected GPU, or provide a detailed technical root-cause analysis.

Microsoft’s cited KB documentation also did not explicitly confirm a general GeForce gaming regression. It is more accurate to say that NVIDIA associated its targeted mitigation with performance problems observed after KB5066835—not that Microsoft admitted NVIDIA was at fault.

There is no evidence that KB5066835 permanently damaged GPUs. A driver hotfix addresses software behavior; it cannot repair physical hardware and should not be used to explain every later FPS drop.

Is GeForce Hotfix 581.94 still needed?

Usually, no—not as the first choice for a current installation. Hotfixes are temporary releases, and their fixes are normally folded into later regular drivers. A current GeForce owner should begin at NVIDIA’s driver download page and select the correct GPU and Windows version.

581.94 is relevant mainly when investigating the 2025 incident, comparing a system against its historical driver state, or following a specific NVIDIA support recommendation. It may no longer be hosted as a normal download, and an archived package should be used only when its authenticity and hardware compatibility are clear.

Bottom line

KB5066835 was a real Windows 11 update for versions 24H2 and 25H2, and NVIDIA’s 581.94 hotfix was a genuine targeted response to lower performance in some games after that update. It was appropriate for affected GeForce users at the time, but it was never a guaranteed cure or a universal gaming upgrade. For troubleshooting today, verify the Windows build, check for a repeatable regression, install the latest regular NVIDIA driver first, and reserve update rollback for cases where testing points specifically to KB5066835.
