Angstrom Levy wins neutral by making every movement carry a consequence. His vertical Portal can relocate Angstrom, the opponent, or one of his projectiles, while Ground Portal is a horizontal defensive tool that can teleport either fighter and carries Armor Break plus an uppercut when Angstrom uses it. Place those portals to close off comfortable escape routes, then decide whether the next action is a projectile, a teleport, a kick, or a retreat.
The exact command buttons, startup, recovery, frame advantage, duration and damage values are not established in the available official material and can change with patches. Use the current in-game command list for inputs. The practical advice below explains how to build decisions around the properties that are documented, and which interactions you should verify in Training Mode rather than treat as guaranteed.

What Angstrom’s portals actually do
Executive Producer Mike Willette described Angstrom as “a zoning-focused fighter with a strong emphasis on setups and strategy.” That description matters because the portals are not simply teleport buttons. They are pieces of a space-control system: a portal can alter where a character or projectile appears, forcing the opponent to account for a location that was not previously active.
| Tool | Orientation | Stated purpose | What it can teleport | Documented follow-up or property |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Portal | Vertical | General positioning, offense, defense and setup potential | Angstrom, the opponent or one of Angstrom’s projectiles | Teleporting overhead kick when Angstrom uses the portal |
| Ground Portal | Horizontal | Defensive portal | Angstrom or the opponent | Armor Break property and rising uppercut when Angstrom uses it |
The official move listing says a directional tap changes the position of either portal. It does not publish a complete map of valid destinations, timing windows or frame data, so regard the table as a rules description rather than a guarantee that every placement is equally useful.

Read the command list before practicing
The indexed official move list labels Portal as Neutral Special, Back Special, Boosted Neutral Special and Boosted Back Special. Ground Portal appears as Down Special, Back Down Special and Boosted Down Special. Fastball is listed as Forward Special. These labels describe move categories; they are not a substitute for the current button layout on your platform.
- Open Angstrom’s command list in the current version of Invincible VS.
- Identify the entries named Portal, Ground Portal and Fastball, including their boosted versions.
- Note which direction is required to move the portal after summoning it. The move description confirms that a directional tap changes position, but the exact input display should be checked in-game.
- Test whether your controller’s shortcuts, assist buttons or accessibility settings alter the displayed command.
- Repeat the check after a balance patch. Startup, recovery, resource rules or the interaction between a portal and a projectile may be changed without changing the move’s name.
Do not build a tournament route around an input remembered from a video or an older patch. The official material retrieved for this character does not establish a platform-specific button map.
How to use the vertical Portal
Place it to create a movement question
The most reliable way to think about the vertical Portal is as a question presented to the opponent: if they move toward you, away from you or through a projectile, which location will still be safe once the portal is active? Because the move can affect Angstrom, the opponent or a projectile, one placement can support several possible decisions. The strongest placement is therefore not a memorized screen coordinate; it is a location that makes the opponent’s preferred escape less comfortable.
Recommended Free Tools
For example, after establishing a distance at which the opponent wants to advance, place the portal where advancing would bring them close to its threat area. You can then hold your position and watch for the response instead of immediately spending the teleport. If they hesitate, you have gained time to launch another zoning action. If they commit to movement, the portal gives you a different arrival point to test. This is strategic inference from the documented teleport targets, not a claim of a guaranteed trap.
Use the portal as a choice, not an obligation
Summoning a portal does not require an immediate teleport. Leave it active while you observe the opponent’s jump, dash or block decision, then choose whether Angstrom, the opponent or a projectile is the useful target. If the opponent refuses to approach, the portal still occupies mental space and can make a later projectile more difficult to ignore. If they rush the portal, preserving your position may be better than taking the overhead kick.
Do not teleport simply because the option exists. A teleport that moves Angstrom into a range where the opponent can punish him is a failed zoning decision, even if the animation connects in a different situation. The portal should change the opponent’s choices before it changes your location.

When the overhead kick is appropriate
The official description identifies a teleporting overhead kick when Angstrom uses the vertical Portal. Treat it as a way to convert a prepared portal into a close-range timing attack, not as proof that the move is always safe. The available material does not provide startup, recovery, invulnerability, hit advantage or matchup-specific punish data.

How to use Ground Portal defensively
Understand what makes it different
Ground Portal is explicitly described as a horizontal, defensive portal. It can teleport Angstrom or his opponent, and it has an Armor Break property. When Angstrom uses the portal himself, the listed follow-up is a rising uppercut. Those traits give it a different job from the vertical Portal: it can contest pressure while still threatening a change of position.
Armor Break does not, by itself, establish that Ground Portal beats every attack, is invulnerable, or is a universal reversal. No startup, recovery, hitbox, invulnerability or safety values were supplied. Use the tool when its defensive role fits the situation, then verify the exact risk against the character and attack you are facing.
Defend without surrendering the corner
When an opponent is pressing forward, place Ground Portal so that your likely escape point is not the same place they are already covering. The horizontal orientation makes it useful for a grounded approach, but the best direction depends on spacing and the opponent’s timing. Practice both a retreating placement and one that leaves Angstrom near the opponent, then compare what each option exposes.
If you activate the portal and choose Angstrom’s uppercut, you are exchanging a defensive setup for a direct challenge. That may be correct when the opponent must respect the Armor Break property or when a predictable pressure string leaves a gap. It may be wrong when the opponent can block and punish. The move list does not establish a universal punish window, so treat this as a matchup test rather than a rule.
Use the opponent teleport deliberately
Ground Portal can also teleport the opponent. That gives you a way to reset the distance without committing Angstrom to a close-range attack. Decide where the opponent will appear before activating it: a reset that places them in immediate striking range may help a teammate, while one that returns them to open space may restore your zoning plan. Because destination rules and timing are not fully documented, confirm the result in Training Mode for each placement you intend to use.

Build a zoning sequence around placement
Start with a safe baseline
- Choose a distance where Angstrom can see the opponent’s approach and has room to retreat.
- Summon the vertical Portal and tap a direction to move it to a location that changes the opponent’s route.
- Wait briefly instead of spending the teleport immediately. Watch whether the opponent blocks, jumps, advances or retreats.
- Respond with the least committal option that addresses that choice: keep the portal, launch an orb, teleport Angstrom or use the portal on the opponent if the situation permits.
- After the exchange, recreate the same scenario and test a different response so you know whether your success came from the setup or from the opponent’s mistake.
This sequence follows the character’s stated zoning and setup identity. It does not promise a fixed combo or a guaranteed trap.
Make the opponent respect two locations
A portal is most valuable when the opponent must watch both Angstrom and the portal. If you always teleport as soon as the portal appears, the opponent can ignore the original location. If you never teleport, they can eventually treat the portal as decoration. Alternate between maintaining your position, changing location and routing a projectile through the setup, but only after verifying that the current portal remains active long enough for the choice you want.
Do not overfill the screen with guesses
Zoning is not the same as throwing every available action. A portal that blocks your own retreat or places a projectile on an unhelpful route can reduce your options. Keep one escape path available until you know how the opponent reacts. If a setup fails, return to your baseline distance rather than immediately adding another untested layer.
Combine portals with Fastball and orbs
Fastball summons and launches an orb; its charged version returns to Angstrom. The official material confirms that portals and orbs have unique interactions that can manipulate the fight, apply pressure and create setups, but it does not enumerate every trajectory, timing rule or resulting state.
A safe practice method
- Record Angstrom standing still with the vertical Portal placed at one position.
- Launch an uncharged Fastball and note whether the orb enters, exits, changes direction or ignores the portal.
- Repeat with the charged version, including the return to Angstrom.
- Move the portal one directional tap at a time and repeat the test from both sides of the screen.
- Test Ground Portal separately. Do not assume that an interaction observed with the vertical Portal also applies to the horizontal one.
- Record the opponent blocking, jumping, attacking and being teleported. Write down only results you can reproduce in the current build.
This process turns the official statement about unique interactions into usable knowledge without inventing a route. Publish or rely on a specific orb interaction only when it is directly documented or repeatedly observed in current gameplay capture.
Use the charged orb as a timing check
Because the charged Fastball returns to Angstrom, it can help you test whether a portal setup leaves enough time to receive the orb safely. Practice summoning the portal first, then launching the charged orb, and finally choosing whether to remain still or teleport. If the return forces you into a predictable position, the opponent may be able to attack that timing; if it gives you a stable reset, it may support a longer zoning sequence. The source material does not state which result occurs, so verify it rather than assuming.

Portal use in 3v3 matches
Willette specifically notes that portals, orbs, teammates and assists create additional team strategies. That confirms a broader team context, not a particular assist route or guaranteed combo.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAdd one assist at a time
- Choose an assist and identify the moment you want it to cover: portal recovery, an approach, a projectile setup or a retreat.
- Recreate the same situation in Training Mode without the assist, then with it.
- Check whether the assist actually protects Angstrom, forces a block, changes the opponent’s landing position or simply adds visual noise.
- Repeat from both sides and with the opponent blocking. A setup that works only on an unrecorded dummy is not a confirmed team route.
Think of the assist as a way to buy time for a portal decision, not as a replacement for learning the portal’s solo spacing. Establish the solo setup first, then add teammates so you can tell which part of the sequence is responsible for the result.
Choose a team purpose
A teammate can cover the moment Angstrom waits beside a vertical Portal, protect the recovery of a Ground Portal attempt or make the opponent hesitate before chasing a projectile. Those are testable purposes, not source-confirmed properties of any specific assist. Pick one purpose per experiment and remove the assist if it does not solve that problem.

Portal placement drill
Place the vertical Portal at three distances: close to Angstrom, midway between the fighters and near the opponent. For each location, record the opponent advancing, retreating, jumping and blocking. Test Angstrom’s teleport and the overhead kick from every position. This reveals practical reach and timing without relying on a combo video that may use a different patch.
Ground Portal defense drill
Record a short pressure sequence, then test Ground Portal at the first hit, the gap and the end of the sequence. Try both teleporting Angstrom and using the uppercut. Repeat while the opponent blocks. Note where Armor Break changes the exchange and where the move can be punished. Do not label it a reversal, invulnerable move or guaranteed answer unless your current game data proves that property.

Team drill
After the solo tests, add a single assist and repeat the same recordings. Test the opponent blocking, jumping and attacking. Then switch sides. This prevents you from mistaking a side-specific spacing quirk for a universal team setup.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Teleporting on autopilot
If every portal ends with Angstrom teleporting, the opponent can attack the destination or simply wait. Add dummy recordings that punish the teleport and practice leaving the portal unused. Your goal is to make the destination a decision, not a habit.
Calling Ground Portal a guaranteed escape
The defensive label and Armor Break property do not provide frame data. Test the move against the exact pressure you are trying to escape. If it loses to a throw, a delayed attack or a blocked string, include that limitation in your plan.
Assuming every projectile passes through a portal
The official description confirms unique portal-orb interactions but does not list them. Verify each orb, charge state, direction and portal orientation. Treat untested behavior as unknown.
Using old inputs
Portal entries and boosted variants are listed by move category, but the retrieved material does not establish a complete platform button map. Reopen the in-game command list after patches and when changing controllers.
Layering setups before learning the first layer
If you cannot explain what the portal alone changes, adding an orb and an assist makes the result difficult to diagnose. Remove extra actions, reproduce the base placement and add one variable at a time.
A practical match checklist
- Have you confirmed the current command inputs for Portal, Ground Portal, their boosted versions and Fastball?
- Does your vertical Portal placement alter the opponent’s preferred route, or is it merely occupying space?
- Are you choosing among Angstrom teleport, opponent teleport, projectile routing and no teleport based on what the opponent does?
- Have you tested the overhead kick against blocking and common defensive responses?
- Have you verified where Ground Portal’s Armor Break and uppercut help, and where they can be punished?
- Do you know the current behavior of your chosen orb interaction rather than relying on an assumption?
- When using an assist, can you identify the specific recovery, approach or pressure problem it solves?
What is confirmed, and what still needs testing
Confirmed official details are limited to the move roles and properties: the vertical Portal can teleport Angstrom, the opponent or a projectile and can be repositioned directionally; Ground Portal is horizontal and defensive, can teleport Angstrom or the opponent, has Armor Break and produces an uppercut when Angstrom uses it; Fastball launches an orb and the charged version returns to Angstrom; and portals interact uniquely with orbs. The developer’s description establishes a zoning, setup and strategy focus, while Xbox Wire’s game listing identifies Training Mode as a place to hone combos.
