Windows 10’s six wallpaper-fit modes control how a picture is sized, cropped, repeated, or distributed across your screens. Open Settings > Personalization > Background (or right-click the desktop and select Personalize), choose Picture, and use Choose a fit. Select Fill when covering the screen matters more than keeping every edge, Fit when the entire image must remain visible, Stretch only when distortion is acceptable, Tile for small repeating patterns, Center for an image at its original pixel size, and Span for one panoramic image across an extended multi-monitor desktop.
The right choice depends on the image’s aspect ratio, whether cropping or empty space is acceptable, and whether you use one monitor or several. The instructions below also cover separate wallpapers, display arrangement, and the common resolution bug that makes an external monitor’s wallpaper appear too large or too small.

How do I change the wallpaper fit in Windows 10?
You can change the fit without changing the image file. The setting is in the Background page of Personalization.
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose Personalize. Alternatively, open Settings > Personalization > Background.
- Set Background to Picture if it is set to Solid color or Slideshow.
- Choose an existing picture or select Browse to pick another file.
- Open the Choose a fit menu and select Fill, Fit, Stretch, Tile, Center, or Span.
The preview updates immediately. If you have more than one display, the result depends on whether Windows is extending or duplicating the desktop and on how the monitors are arranged in Display settings.

What does Center, Fill, Fit, Stretch, Tile, and Span mean?
Each mode applies a different rule to the same source image. The underlying Windows desktop-wallpaper enumeration uses the same six values: CENTER, TILE, STRETCH, FIT, FILL, and SPAN.
Fill
Fill enlarges the image until it covers the entire screen. It preserves the image’s proportions, so circles and faces remain natural, but Windows may crop content from the sides or top and bottom when the picture and display have different aspect ratios. Fill is usually the practical choice for photographs when a completely covered screen is more important than seeing every edge.
Fit
Fit scales the whole image inside the screen while preserving its aspect ratio. Nothing in the source picture is cropped, but unused space can appear as bars at the sides or at the top and bottom, with the selected background color showing around the image. Use Fit for artwork, screenshots, portraits, or any photograph whose full composition must remain visible.
Stretch
Stretch forces the image to the exact screen dimensions instead of preserving its proportions. A square object can become a rectangle, and faces can look wider or narrower if the source and screen ratios differ. It is appropriate only when distortion is harmless or when the image was created for that exact display size.
Tile
Tile repeats the source image across the available surface rather than scaling one copy to fill it. This works well for small patterns, textures, and simple backgrounds designed to repeat. A normal photograph will appear multiple times, with visible seams or repeated subjects.

Center
Center keeps the image at its original pixel dimensions and places it in the middle of the screen. If the file is smaller than the display, a border or the selected background color surrounds it; if it is larger, portions outside the screen remain unseen. Center is useful when you need pixel-accurate display of a small icon, sprite, or other image that should not be resampled.

Span
Span treats attached monitors as one image surface and places one picture across that combined area. It is intended for a single panoramic background on an extended desktop. Because the image crosses monitor boundaries, choose a wide source whose important details do not depend on a single panel.
What is the difference between Fill and Fit?
Both modes preserve the image’s proportions, but they make opposite compromises. Fill removes empty space by cropping the image as necessary; Fit preserves every part of the image and accepts bars or a visible background around it.

Windows’ API description expresses the same distinction: Fit avoids cropping while allowing letterbox bars, whereas Fill crops as needed to avoid those bars. If you are deciding between the two for a standard photograph, start with Fill and switch to Fit when an important subject is being cut off.
How can I span one wallpaper across two or more monitors?
Span works only when Windows presents the displays as one extended desktop. Configure the monitor layout first, then choose Span on the Background page.

- Connect every monitor and open Settings > System > Display.
- Use Identify to show the number on each physical screen. If a panel is missing, select Detect.
- Drag the display rectangles so their on-screen order matches the monitors on your desk. This controls how Windows maps the panoramic image across the group.
- Press Windows + P and select Extend. Do not select Duplicate, which shows the same desktop on each display instead of creating one continuous surface.
- Return to Settings > Personalization > Background, choose Picture, select the panoramic file, and set Choose a fit to Span.
Span uses one image across all attached monitors. A bezel will physically interrupt the view, and different panel sizes or resolutions can make the composition appear uneven; arranging the displays correctly is therefore part of the setup, not an optional cosmetic step.
How do I set a different wallpaper on each monitor?
Windows 10 can assign separate pictures to individual displays instead of spanning one file.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Background and select Picture.
- Choose or browse for the images you want available in the preview strip.
- Right-click an image preview and choose the command that assigns it to a particular display, such as Set for monitor 1 or Set for monitor 2.
- Repeat for each screen. For rotating images, select Slideshow and choose a folder; Windows can show different folder images on different screens.
Microsoft notes that per-monitor background assignment is unavailable while multiple virtual desktops are active. If the monitor-specific command is missing, close the extra virtual desktops and try again.

Why does my wallpaper look stretched, cropped, or too small?
The visual problem usually comes from a mismatch between the source image and the display arrangement, not from a damaged image file. Identify which symptom you see, then change the corresponding setting.
Faces or circles look distorted
Stretch is changing the image’s proportions. Select Fit or Fill instead; both preserve the aspect ratio. Choose Fit if cropping is unacceptable, or Fill if empty bars are the problem.
Important edges disappear
Fill is cropping the image to cover the screen. Switch to Fit to reveal the entire source, or use an image whose aspect ratio is closer to the display.
The picture is surrounded by a border
Fit or Center is leaving unused space because the image does not match the screen dimensions. Fit scales the full image within the screen, while Center leaves it at its original size; select Fill if you prefer coverage over preserving every edge or pixel.
An external monitor’s wallpaper is much too large or too small
Microsoft documents a Windows 10/11 case in which a different resolution on the external display causes incorrect wallpaper sizing. Select the external screen in Settings > System > Display, temporarily choose a different resolution, and when Windows asks whether to keep it, select Revert. This documented workaround refreshes the display’s wallpaper sizing without requiring you to keep the temporary resolution.

Span is missing or the panorama is arranged incorrectly
Return to Settings > System > Display and confirm that every monitor appears, the rectangles are ordered correctly, and Windows + P > Extend is selected. Span cannot create a continuous image when Windows is duplicating the desktop or when a display has not been detected. If you are trying to assign separate pictures rather than span one, also check whether multiple virtual desktops are active, because Windows does not support per-monitor assignment in that state.
Does Windows 10 still receive support?
Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided, although an existing Windows 10 PC continues to work. The wallpaper controls described here remain part of the operating system, but support status matters if a display or Personalization problem requires a future fix.

Yes. Select Slideshow on the Background page, choose a folder, and then select the fit behavior. The fit rule applies to each image as Windows displays it; with multiple monitors, slideshow images can be shown separately on screens when monitor-specific assignment is available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing the fit mode edit or recompress my original picture?
No. The setting controls how Windows renders the image on the desktop; it does not rewrite the source file. You can switch between modes repeatedly without creating a new copy of the picture.
What kind of file is best for a Span wallpaper?
Use one wide, panoramic image rather than separate files stitched at the last moment. Keep faces, text, and other critical details away from the physical boundaries between monitors so a bezel does not interrupt them.
Why do my monitors show different portions of a Span image?
Span maps the picture over the combined desktop coordinates, so monitor order, resolution, and physical arrangement affect where each portion lands. Recheck Identify, the drag-and-drop layout in Display settings, and Extend mode before changing the image itself.
