Nintendo’s general Switch game compatibility overview states that its information is current as of June 5, 2025. That is an as-of date for the overview, not a live count of compatible games or a percentage of the library. Nintendo also cautions that its testing is limited and compatibility status can change, so the individual listing is the better place to confirm a particular game.
One clear exception is Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit. Nintendo says the Switch 2 console cannot fit into the kit’s VR Goggles, so the game cannot be played on Switch 2. This is a physical accessory constraint; it does not mean original Switch game cards as a category are incompatible.
Can I put my Switch cartridges in Switch 2?
Yes, if the title is compatible. Insert the original game card into the Switch 2 game-card slot with its label facing the same direction as the console screen, then push it in until it clicks. Nintendo’s insertion instructions also cover removing the card; follow the console’s on-screen prompts if a game is open when you remove it.
Before inserting a card, make sure you know what kind of product you have. A physical box can contain a download code rather than a game card, and a Switch 2 game-key card is not a standard game card with the complete game stored on it. How do I check whether a particular game will work?
Use the game’s individual Nintendo product page or eShop listing, including any compatibility notice. Check not only whether the game launches, but also whether the listing identifies a controller, accessory, or feature that affects play.
- Identify the title and format. Confirm the exact game and whether the package contains an original Switch card, a Switch 2 Edition card, a Switch 2-exclusive card, a game-key card, or a download code.
- Open the individual Nintendo listing. Look for its current Switch 2 compatibility information. Do this before checkout if you are buying a physical copy specifically to use on Switch 2.
- Read the control and accessory notes. A game may be playable but still require an original Switch controller or an accessory that Joy-Con 2 cannot replace.
- Check for an edition upgrade separately. If you want Switch 2 Edition enhancements for a game you already own, confirm whether that title offers a free update or a separately purchased upgrade.
- Insert the card correctly. With the label facing the same direction as the screen, push the card into the slot until it clicks.
These checks answer different questions: whether the base game works, whether your available controls support it, and whether you want additional Switch 2 Edition features. A positive answer to the first does not automatically settle the other two.
Do some compatible games still need original Joy-Con?
Yes. Some original Switch games depend on Joy-Con features or physical attachments that Joy-Con 2 do not provide in the same way. Nintendo specifically identifies original Joy-Con as needed for games including Ring Fit Adventure, 1-2-Switch, Game Builder Garage, Nintendo Switch Sports, and WarioWare: Move It!.
Ring Fit Adventure
Ring Fit Adventure requires original Switch Joy-Con attached to its Ring-Con and leg strap. Pairing is not the same as attaching
Original Joy-Con pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the new console. They also need compatible charging hardware. That distinction matters for games that require Joy-Con to be physically mounted on an accessory: wireless pairing does not make Joy-Con 2 fit the Ring-Con or leg strap.
For any other original Switch title that uses motion controls, a grip, or a game-specific attachment, check the individual compatibility notice. Do not assume that every controller-dependent feature works just because the card is supported.
Do I need to buy a Switch 2 Edition to play a game I own?
No, not when the original Switch game is compatible and you only want to play that version. A Switch 2 Edition upgrade, where offered, is a separate way to get additional content or enhancements; it is not a blanket requirement for using an original Switch game card on Switch 2.

Are game-key cards the same as Switch cartridges?
No. A game-key card is a Switch 2 product that requires a first-time game download. After downloading, you still need the key card inserted to launch the game. This differs from an original Switch game card and from a card that contains the game without a required initial download.
The first launch of a game-key card requires an internet connection and enough storage to download the game. The storage can be the console’s internal storage or a microSD Express card. After the download, the game can launch offline, but the key card must remain inserted.

If you are buying for a household that uses both consoles, check which version is on the card and which console each player owns. The words “Switch 2 Edition” do not mean the card provides Switch 2 enhancements on older hardware.
What should I check before buying a physical copy?
Confirm the exact title’s compatibility before paying, especially if you are buying it specifically for Switch 2. Then check these practical details:
- Individual compatibility: Does the Nintendo listing say the game works on Switch 2, and does it mention any limitations?
- Controls and accessories: Does the game need original Joy-Con, a Ring-Con, a leg strap, or another item?
- Edition: Are you buying the original Switch version or a Switch 2 Edition, and are the extra features important to you?
- What is in the box: Is it a full game card, a game-key card that needs a download, or a download code?
- Download and storage needs: If it is a game-key card, do you have an internet connection for the initial download and enough internal or microSD Express storage?
The most reliable decision is based on the exact game and package, not on the cartridge shape or the console’s ability to accept a card. Compatibility, required accessories, edition content, and download needs are separate checks.
