Pokémon commands in Minecraft come from a Pokémon mod, not from vanilla Minecraft. First identify whether your world runs Pixelmon or Cobblemon, then use that mod’s command set: Pixelmon uses commands such as /pokespawn and /pokegive, while Cobblemon uses /spawnpokemon (also available as /pokespawn). Cobblemon requires cheats; Pixelmon requires the appropriate operator or server permission. Enter commands in chat, preserve required arguments, and use tab completion to catch spelling and version differences.

This guide covers spawning, giving, healing, PC storage, inspection, battles, evolution, administration, multiplayer permissions, and the fixes for commands that fail.

Which Pokémon Minecraft mod’s commands are you trying to use?

Pixelmon and Cobblemon are separate mods with overlapping goals but different command systems. A command that works in one may be unknown in the other, so check the mod name on the title screen, pause menu, launcher profile, or server information before entering anything.

  • Pixelmon: uses a broad command set for spawning, party and PC management, battles, evolution, research, diagnostics, and administration.
  • Cobblemon: documents a smaller optional command set centered on spawning and managing Pokémon; its commands require cheats to be enabled.

Command notation in this guide follows standard Minecraft syntax. Text inside angle brackets is a required argument, text inside square brackets is optional, and random is a literal word you type when the command offers a random choice. Do not type the angle brackets themselves.

How do I spawn a Pokémon in Pixelmon?

With Pixelmon installed and the required permission, type /pokespawn <Pokémon | random> [arguments] in chat. Replace the required Pokémon name with a species, or type random for a random spawn. Optional arguments use Pixelmon Pokémon Specs, which let you describe properties of the Pokémon you want.

Basic Pixelmon spawning

  1. Open the Minecraft chat window.
  2. Type /pokespawn, followed by a species name or the literal random.
  3. Add any optional Pokémon Specs supported by your installed Pixelmon release.
  4. Press Enter and check the area around your character for the result.

The complete pattern is /pokespawn <Pokémon | random> [arguments]. A missing species, misspelled name, or unsupported spec will cause the command parser to reject the request or show an error rather than spawning the intended Pokémon.

How do I give myself or another player a Pokémon?

Use /pokegive <player> <Pokémon | random> [arguments]. The command places the selected Pokémon in the target player’s party when there is room. If the party is full, it goes to that player’s PC instead; a player who is currently in battle receives it in the PC.

The target can be another player, so this command is useful for distributing starter choices, event Pokémon, or test teams on a server. The Pokémon and optional arguments follow the same Pixelmon Specs approach used by /pokespawn.

How do I heal Pokémon and open the PC?

  • /pokeheal [player] heals the specified player’s Pokémon. With no player argument, it heals the command user’s Pokémon.
  • /pc [box] opens the player’s PC. Supplying a box selects a particular box; omitting it opens the normal PC interface.
  • /starter [player] opens the starter-selection menu for the command user or the named player.

Because the player argument on /pokeheal and /starter is optional, check which account is targeted before pressing Enter on a shared server.

How can I inspect or edit a Pixelmon Pokémon?

Pixelmon provides separate commands for viewing a party, examining individual stats, testing a Pokémon against a spec, and changing attributes. These commands are especially useful for server administration and controlled testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

View a party and detailed data

/pokesee <player> displays the target’s party information, including species, shiny state, level, nature, growth, ability, original trainer, held item, EVs, IVs, and moves. Use it when you need a complete snapshot without opening the player’s interface.

For a specific party position, /ivs <slot> shows IVs and /evs <slot> shows EVs. The slot value identifies the Pokémon’s position in the party. /hiddenpower <position> reports the Hidden Power type and base power for the Pokémon in that position.

Edit or test against Pokémon Specs

/pokeedit <player> <party slot> <spec> edits one or more attributes of the selected Pokémon using Pokémon Specs. Specify the player and party slot precisely; editing the wrong slot changes a different party member.

/poketest <player> <[spec/slot]> <[spec]> tests whether the selected Pokémon matches a spec. Its optional arguments allow the test to target a slot, a spec, or both, according to the syntax accepted by the installed Pixelmon release.

How do I start battles or evolve Pokémon with Pixelmon commands?

Pixelmon’s battle and progression commands let an operator create controlled encounters, trigger evolution, simulate trade evolution, or end a problematic battle.

Start a commanded battle

/pokebattle <player> <participant2> <participant3> <participant4> starts a battle. Participants can be players, species names, NPC trainers, or the literal random. The multi-participant form supports double-battle arrangements, so make sure every required participant position is filled with a valid name or choice.

Trigger or force evolution

/pokeevolve <player> <slot> [-f] evolves the Pokémon in the chosen party slot when its normal conditions are met. Adding -f forces the evolution. For a branching evolution such as Eevee, the documented default is the first evolution by Pokédex number, which is Vaporeon for Eevee; choose carefully before using a forced evolution.

/tradesim <position> simulates a trade evolution. It still observes any required held item, so the command does not bypass every evolution condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

End battles or mark a party fainted

  • /pokefaint <player> faints the target player’s party.
  • /endbattle [player] ends an active battle for the specified player, or for the command user when the player argument is omitted.

Use the player argument on a multiplayer server only when you intend to affect that account; omitting an optional target usually applies the command to yourself.

Which Pixelmon commands help with spawning and diagnostics?

When natural spawning behaves unexpectedly, Pixelmon’s diagnostic commands can show whether the area and conditions permit a spawn.

  • /checkspawns [specific | type] reports percentage-based spawn possibilities for the current area, including relevant time, weather, and related conditions. You can request a specific Pokémon or a type, or omit the optional selector for the general report.
  • /legendaryspawn attempts a legendary spawn using normal valid-area chances. It is not a guarantee that a legendary appears immediately.
  • /spawning on|off|dignostic enables spawning, disables spawning, or reports spawn diagnostics. The documented command spells the third option dignostic; preserve that spelling when entering it.
  • /spectate [player] starts or stops spectating a battle, either for yourself or the optional player target.

These commands report or alter Pixelmon’s spawning state; they do not convert a Cobblemon world into a Pixelmon world.

What other Pixelmon administration commands are available?

Use destructive commands only after confirming the target and, where applicable, the confirmation prompt. A mistake can remove a party or an entire PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • /pokedel removes Pokémon from a party or PC.
  • /pokereset resets a Pokémon to level 5 by default.
  • /pokerestart wipes a player’s party and PC after confirmation.
  • /poketrieve <player/all> returns party Pokémon to their Poké Balls. The target can be one player or all, depending on the permission level and server policy.
  • /pokecolor <slot> <color code> <text> applies Minecraft formatting codes to a nickname.
  • /research get|clear|discard|complete|give manages Pixelmon research assignments.

On a public server, ask an operator before using commands that alter another player’s storage, nickname, research, or party.

How do I use Cobblemon commands?

Cobblemon’s official command page describes these commands as optional gameplay tools and states that cheats must be enabled. In a single-player world, enable cheats in the world settings; on a server, an operator must permit command use.

Spawn a Pokémon

Type /spawnpokemon <pokemon> [attributes] to spawn a named Pokémon at the command user’s position. Cobblemon also lists /pokespawn as an alias for /spawnpokemon.

The official example is /spawnpokemon abra shiny ability=synchronize. Attributes may appear in any order, provided a Pokémon name appears somewhere in the command. This attribute syntax is Cobblemon’s format; do not replace it with Pixelmon Pokémon Specs.

  1. Confirm the world is running Cobblemon and that cheats are enabled.
  2. Open chat and enter /spawnpokemon followed by a valid Pokémon name.
  3. Add supported attributes such as the documented shiny and ability values when needed.
  4. Press Enter and look at your current position for the spawned Pokémon.

If /spawnpokemon is not recognized, try the documented alias /pokespawn only after confirming that Cobblemon is installed. In a Pixelmon world, the same alias refers to Pixelmon’s different command and argument system.

What is the difference between Pixelmon and Cobblemon commands?

The command families overlap at the basic spawn action, but Pixelmon exposes substantially more party, battle, evolution, inspection, and administration controls in the documented reference. Cobblemon emphasizes optional commands and requires cheats.

Why does my Pokémon command not work?

Most failures come from using the wrong mod’s syntax, lacking permission, or entering an argument that the installed release does not recognize. Work through these checks in order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Confirm the mod and command family

Check whether the world runs Pixelmon or Cobblemon. Pixelmon uses commands such as /pokegive, /pokeheal, and /pc; Cobblemon’s documented spawn command is /spawnpokemon. Do not silently substitute one mod’s syntax for the other.

2. Check cheats, operator status, and permissions

Cobblemon commands require cheats. Pixelmon commands on multiplayer servers require the relevant operator status or permission node. If you are a regular player, ask the server administrator which node is granted rather than assuming every command is available.

3. Use completion and inspect every argument

  • Press Tab where the client or server provides completion to see valid command names, player names, species, and argument forms.
  • Check species spelling, capitalization rules shown by completion, player names, and party slot numbers.
  • Keep required arguments in place and omit only arguments marked optional.
  • Type the literal word random where the command documents it; do not replace it with a species name if you want random selection.

4. Check release-specific documentation

Aliases, accepted attributes, Pokémon Specs, and permission nodes can change between mod releases. Read the command page for the exact Pixelmon or Cobblemon version installed on the client or server before troubleshooting a syntax error.

5. Account for hybrid server software

Pixelmon warns that hybrid server software can remap permission nodes. If a documented node using the pixelmon prefix is rejected, try the corresponding node with the minecraft prefix, as the Pixelmon documentation suggests. This is a permission-resolution issue, not a reason to change the command’s spelling or arguments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Separate a command error from a gameplay condition

A successful command can still produce an unexpected result: /pokegive sends a full party’s Pokémon to the PC, /tradesim still observes a required held item, and /legendaryspawn follows normal valid-area chances. Read the result message and verify the party, PC, area, weather, time, and battle state before repeating a command.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How should I use these commands safely on a multiplayer server?

Commands that inspect or alter another player’s Pokémon should be treated as administrative actions. Before using them, verify the exact target, party slot, and intended outcome, especially for /pokedel, /pokereset, and /pokerestart.

  • Use a test world or a designated test player before experimenting with unfamiliar Specs or attributes.
  • Prefer non-destructive inspection commands such as /pokesee, /ivs, and /evs when diagnosing a team.
  • Tell players when a command will place a Pokémon in the PC rather than the party.
  • Confirm any destructive command’s prompt instead of assuming it can be undone.
  • Keep the server’s mod version and permission configuration documented for staff, because command behavior is release- and software-dependent.

For a private single-player world, enabling cheats is the main Cobblemon prerequisite. For a multiplayer world, the server’s operator and permissions configuration remains the final authority over who can run Pixelmon commands.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix Pixelmon and Cobblemon commands in one world?

No. Each command is registered by the mod that provides it, and the two mods use different customization systems. Use the command family installed on that world rather than combining a Pixelmon command with Cobblemon attributes or vice versa.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did a Pokémon I gave a player appear in the PC?

Pixelmon sends a Pokémon to the PC when the target party is full. It also sends the Pokémon to the PC when that player is currently in battle, so check the PC before assuming the command failed.

Does forcing an evolution ignore every requirement?

No. The -f option on /pokeevolve forces the evolution action, but trade simulation still observes a required held item. Branching species also follow Pixelmon’s documented default when no branch is selected.

Can I use a Pixelmon permission node unchanged on a hybrid server?

Not always. Pixelmon notes that hybrid software can remap permission nodes; if the node with the pixelmon prefix is rejected, test the corresponding minecraft-prefixed node through the server’s permission system.

Is a legendary spawn command guaranteed to create a legendary?

No. /legendaryspawn attempts a spawn using normal valid-area chances. The area and ordinary spawning conditions still determine whether the attempt succeeds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
