Start at roughly a right angle, keep the hinge stationary on a table or stand, and adjust only after checking how the game handles the new aspect ratio. The best angle depends on hinge stability, the game’s orientation, whether it accepts lower-half controls, and how much screen you are willing to give to another app.

What split-screen and a folded hinge actually do
There are two related but different features. Flex Mode uses the hinge position itself. When a supported Samsung foldable is partly folded, the operating system can move the app’s main content to the upper half and place controls such as a touchpad, volume, brightness, notifications or screenshots on the lower half. Samsung describes the partly folded state in developer documentation as HALF-OPENED; compatible games can therefore be played without holding the phone while the lower display handles navigation.

Split-screen multitasking divides the display between two applications. A game might occupy one region while a guide, chat, music player or map occupies the other. Split-screen does not automatically turn the second half into a game controller. The game must expose its own lower-half controls, support the device’s foldable gaming mode, or accept input from a paired controller.

On a fully unfolded phone, landscape games generally get the broadest play area. A folded L-like setup is most useful when the title or emulator can keep gameplay above the hinge and put virtual buttons, menus or a gamepad below it. Some games simply letterbox, rotate unexpectedly or ignore the hinge, so test the actual title rather than assuming every Android game will reflow correctly.
Prepare the phone before opening a game
- Install the latest system and game updates. Flex behavior, Multi Window labels and foldable gaming features can change with the device software release.
- Confirm the exact phone model and regional software support. Flex Mode is not universal across every foldable, and documentation for one model or country may not match another.
- Decide whether you need a second app. A companion app consumes usable game area; if the game already supplies controls in Flex Mode, leave the display dedicated to the game.
- Use a solid tabletop or an adjustable foldable-phone stand. A hinge that slowly slips changes touch positions and can make a game appear to lose input.
- If the game needs physical buttons, have a compatible Bluetooth controller available and check the game’s own input settings after pairing.
Set up Samsung Flex Mode for a game
1. Launch while fully unfolded
Open the phone flat before starting the game. This gives the title its normal screen dimensions and lets Android complete its initial orientation and layout choice. Wait until the game reaches its menu or playable scene; then fold the device gradually rather than snapping it shut.
2. Fold into a stable L position
Place the lower half on the table and bring the upper half upright. Begin near a 90-degree angle, then make small adjustments until the display is comfortable and the hinge stays put. The documented operating range for supported Samsung Flex Mode devices is 75 to 115 degrees. Within that range, the exact angle is a physical-control decision: a steeper screen can be easier to see, while a flatter one may be more comfortable for reaching lower controls.

When the title supports Flex Mode, its play area should remain on the upper portion and a lower control region may appear. The lower area can expose navigation, a touchpad or game-specific buttons, but the arrangement is app-dependent. If the game remains full-screen, rotates incorrectly or leaves the lower display blank, it may not implement Flex behavior.
4. Turn on the Flex mode panel when necessary
On Galaxy devices, open Settings → Advanced features → Flex mode panel and enable the panel. It can provide brightness, volume, notifications, screenshots and touchpad controls while the phone is partly folded. Samsung’s buying guidance also describes enabling individual apps through Settings → Advanced features → Labs → Flex Mode panel when an app does not trigger the layout automatically. Menu wording can vary with One UI version, so use the Settings search field for Flex mode panel if you do not see the item.

5. Lock the physical position
Once the game and controls are visible, stop moving the hinge. A stand is useful for longer sessions because it prevents the upper display from drifting backward and keeps the lower touch surface at a repeatable angle. If you need to change the viewing position, pause first, reposition the phone, and confirm that the game has not changed orientation.
Which hinge angle works best?
There is no single ideal angle for every title. Samsung’s 75–115-degree Flex range is the compatibility envelope; comfort and control precision determine the best point inside it.

Evaluate each angle using four checks: the hinge must hold without slipping; your thumbs or fingers must reach the lower controls without covering the game; the image must stay in the intended orientation; and the game must continue receiving touch input after the device settles. If any check fails, changing the angle will not compensate for an app that lacks foldable support.
Add a second app with Multi Window
Multi Window is the general-purpose way to place another app beside or below a game. The available layouts and number of simultaneous windows vary by model and software version.
- Open the game and leave it running.
- Open the Multi app tray or the device’s recent-apps interface.
- Drag the companion app to the top region to create a split-screen pair. On devices that offer it, dragging the app to the center creates a floating pop-up window instead.
- Adjust the divider until the game has enough room for its controls. A guide or chat window can be made narrow; a map or inventory may need more width.
- Tap the game and play for several minutes. If frame composition, touch targets or orientation become unreliable, close the second app rather than forcing the split.
A second app is most useful for low-attention tasks: checking a walkthrough, monitoring a chat, changing a playlist or keeping a map visible. It is less suitable for games with dense HUDs, virtual sticks near both edges or small text. Split-screen also does not guarantee that audio, notifications or network activity from the companion app will behave exactly as they do in full screen.

Split-screen versus a Flex control layout

Use Android 17 Foldable Gaming Mode when supported
Google’s Android 17 documentation describes a foldable-specific gaming mode with a roughly 50/50 arrangement: the game occupies the upper portion and a customizable virtual gamepad occupies the lower portion. From the gamepad controls, you can adjust button layout, dark mode and button size. This is a system gaming feature, not a guarantee that every title will expose every control or map every button correctly.

If the option is present, open the game first, invoke the device’s gaming-mode control, and select the foldable or virtual-gamepad layout. Test each button in a non-critical menu before starting a ranked match or a difficult level. If a title supplies its own touch controls, compare both layouts: the system gamepad may offer consistent placement, while the game’s native controls may provide more context-sensitive actions.
Android 17’s layout can coexist conceptually with multitasking, but stacking another app on top of a 50/50 gamepad arrangement can make controls too small. Treat the virtual gamepad as the second half of the display and reserve Multi Window for games that do not need that space.
Choose the right layout for the game
Landscape action, racing and strategy games
Start fully unfolded in landscape so the game can use its broad aspect ratio. Fold only if the title explicitly supports a top play area with lower controls. If the image rotates to portrait or leaves large unused bands, return to the unfolded layout; the hinge cannot correct an orientation the app does not support.
Turn-based games and emulators
A folded position can work well when the upper half shows the playfield and the lower half contains buttons, menus or a virtual gamepad. Emulators differ in how they map the hinge area, so place controls away from the crease and save a layout after confirming that every button registers.

Portrait games
Portrait titles may be more comfortable fully open or in a tent-like position, depending on the device. Do not force a landscape split-screen arrangement if the game’s interface is designed around a tall portrait canvas. Use a floating companion window only when it does not cover essential touch targets.
Games that require rapid two-thumb input
These games often benefit from an external controller or an unfolded display. A lower-half Flex panel can work if the controls are large and separated, but a narrow split-screen pane may place virtual sticks too close together or resize them unpredictably.
Compatibility: verify the exact model and software
Flex Mode is not a universal foldable standard. App support, the number of simultaneous windows and the available gaming panels vary by phone model and software release. Samsung explicitly notes that Flex compatibility differs by app, so the absence of a lower control panel is not proof that the hinge is faulty.
Samsung’s current US Support documentation says Flex Mode is not supported on the Galaxy Z TriFold or Z Fold8, while Samsung’s UK buying guide lists Z Fold8 models among supported devices. That is a documentation or regional discrepancy, not a basis for a blanket compatibility claim. Before buying accessories or changing settings, check the support page for your country, the exact model number and the installed One UI version. If those sources disagree, rely on the behavior of the current device and contact regional support rather than assuming one region’s list applies globally.

What to record when checking support
- Exact model name and model number.
- Android and One UI versions.
- Country or carrier software region.
- Whether Settings → Advanced features → Flex mode panel is present.
- Whether the game appears in the Flex Mode app list or reacts when the hinge enters the partly folded state.
- Whether Android 17 Foldable Gaming Mode and its virtual gamepad are offered on that build.
Use a Bluetooth controller when touch controls are not enough
Pair a compatible Bluetooth Android controller through the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then open the game’s input or controller menu. Confirm that the game recognizes each face button, stick and trigger; some titles require a separate key-mapping choice after pairing. A controller is especially practical when a second app would otherwise consume the lower half or when the game’s virtual buttons sit across the hinge.

Android 17’s virtual gamepad can remove the need for hardware on supported devices, but it remains touch input. Physical controls are usually easier to feel without looking, while the virtual pad keeps the setup lighter and leaves no accessory to charge. Choose based on the game’s timing demands and your tolerance for losing display area.
Troubleshoot common problems
Flex Mode does not appear
- Confirm that the phone is partly folded rather than merely tilted in a case.
- Check Settings → Advanced features → Flex mode panel and enable it.
- Use Settings → Advanced features → Labs → Flex Mode panel to add an app that does not auto-trigger, where that menu is available.
- Update the phone and game, then test with a known compatible app. If other apps work, the game may not implement Flex behavior.
The game rotates or resizes badly
Return to a fully unfolded display, set the game’s own orientation preference, and reopen it before folding again. Some titles only calculate their layout at launch. If the problem returns every time, use the unfolded screen or a controller instead of forcing a split layout.
The hinge angle will not stay put
Move the phone to a level, non-slip surface or use an adjustable stand. Remove a case that interferes with the hinge, if doing so is safe for the device, and avoid playing while holding the phone in mid-air. A drifting hinge changes both viewing angle and touch geometry.
Touches near the crease are missed
Move virtual buttons away from the hinge and screen edges in the game’s control editor. Increase button size if the title allows it, or switch to a controller. On a split-screen layout, widen the game pane before changing sensitivity settings.
The companion app makes the game unusable
Drag the divider to give the game more space, convert the companion app to a pop-up window, or close it. A guide, chat or music player is optional; stable game input is not. Reopen the game after closing the second app if its orientation does not restore correctly.
A repeatable setup checklist
- Update the phone, game and controller firmware if applicable.
- Verify model, region, Android/One UI version and Flex or Android 17 gaming support.
- Open the game while the phone is fully unfolded.
- Fold gradually and begin near a right angle on a solid surface.
- Within the supported Flex range, adjust the hinge for visibility and reach.
- Enable the Flex mode panel if controls do not appear.
- Test the game’s orientation, every virtual button and any save-state or pause function.
- Add a low-priority companion app through Multi Window only if the game remains readable and responsive.
- Pair a Bluetooth controller for titles that need physical buttons.
- Pause before moving the phone or changing the hinge angle.
How to decide in one minute
Use a fully unfolded landscape screen when the game needs maximum width or does not recognize the hinge. Use Flex Mode around a stable right angle when the title provides a top play area and lower controls. Use Multi Window when the second app is genuinely useful and the game still has comfortable touch targets. Use Android 17 Foldable Gaming Mode when the device offers its 50/50 virtual gamepad and the title benefits from consistent lower-half buttons. If none of these layouts remains stable, an unfolded phone with a Bluetooth controller is the dependable fallback.
