You can play and control Spotify while a PC game is running on Windows 10 without switching to the desktop. Install the Microsoft Store version of Spotify for Windows (version 1.1.94 includes the current Xbox Game Bar widget), sign in, leave Spotify running, start your game, and press Windows logo key + G. Open the Spotify widget from Game Bar’s Widgets menu, then use its playback controls. The separate Audio widget handles music and game-application volume. A controller and gaming headset are optional; a keyboard, mouse and your normal PC speakers or headphones are enough.
What is Xbox Game Bar’s Spotify integration?
Xbox Game Bar is a Windows 10 gaming overlay that appears on top of most PC games. Pressing Win+G opens widgets for tasks such as audio mixing, capture, performance monitoring and music control, so you do not need to Alt+Tab out of the game. - Microsoft Store Spotify app: Install or update Spotify for Windows from the Microsoft Store. The Store build is the one Spotify documents for the current integrated widget.
- A Spotify account: You must be signed in to Spotify for Windows. The Game Bar widget uses that desktop session rather than maintaining an unrelated account in a separate widget.
- Spotify running on the same PC: Leave the desktop app open. It may be minimized to the taskbar or system tray, but it must be running and signed in.
- A game that allows Game Bar: Xbox says Game Bar works with most PC games, not literally every title. A game, launcher or security configuration can prevent the overlay from appearing.
- An audio output: Ordinary desktop speakers, headphones or a headset work. A controller and a dedicated gaming headset are conveniences, not requirements.
You do not need to install a separate legacy Spotify widget, use a phone as a remote, or keep Spotify’s main window visible while you play.
How do I install the current Spotify widget?
- Open Microsoft Store. Search for Spotify and select the official Spotify for Windows application.
- Install or update it. Spotify identifies version 1.1.94 of the Store build as including the current Xbox Game Bar widget. If the Store offers an update, apply it before troubleshooting Game Bar.
- Launch Spotify for Windows. Sign in to the account that contains the playlists you want to use.
- Keep the app running. You can minimize it, but do not fully quit it from the system tray. The widget reads the session from this desktop app.
- Confirm playback outside the game. Start any track or playlist briefly. This verifies that the account, network connection and selected output device are working before you add Game Bar to the chain.
The older integration was installed separately from Spotify’s website or the Microsoft Store and could ask for its own Spotify credentials. That is not the preferred path for a current Windows 10 setup. If you see instructions telling you to download a standalone widget, treat them as legacy instructions and use the Store app instead.

- Start your game. Wait until the game is in its normal playable window. Borderless-windowed mode often makes overlays easy to see, but Game Bar support is title-dependent.
- Press
Win+G. Hold the Windows logo key and press G. Game Bar should appear over the game. - Open the Widgets menu. Select the Widgets button on the Game Bar toolbar if the widget list is not already visible.
- Select Spotify. Choose Spotify from the widgets menu. The first launch may display a sign-in or setup prompt; follow it while Spotify for Windows is open and signed in.
- Position the widget. Drag it to a convenient place or pin it if you want it to remain visible after closing the main Game Bar bar. You can close the larger overlay and keep a pinned widget on screen, depending on your Game Bar layout.
- Return to the game. Click back into the game or press
Win+Gagain to hide the overlay. The music continues while you play.
Xbox’s original setup sequence was to press Win+G, click Spotify in the Widgets menu and sign in with Spotify credentials. The current Store-delivered widget changes the account behavior: it is always tied to the account already signed in to Spotify for Windows on that PC.
What can I control from the Spotify widget?
The widget is designed for quick, in-game actions rather than full library management. Depending on the current Spotify interface and playback state, you can use it to:
- Play or pause the current track.
- Skip forward and return to the previous track.
- Change the playback device shown by Spotify.
- Choose recommended playlists and resume listening.
- See enough of the current playback state to make a decision without opening the full Spotify window.
For searching a large catalog, editing playlists or changing account settings, open the main Spotify app when it is safe to leave the game. Game Bar’s advantage is that routine controls stay available without an Alt+Tab switch, not that it duplicates every Spotify screen.
How do I change Spotify and game volume without leaving the game?
Open Game Bar with Win+G and select the Audio widget. Use its mixer to adjust Spotify’s music level separately from the game’s application volume and other active outputs. This is useful when dialogue, positional effects or voice chat need to remain audible while music is lowered.

Win+Gover the game. - Open the Audio widget from the widgets menu.
- Locate the Spotify or music output slider and move it to the desired level.
- Adjust the game application’s slider independently if the effects are too loud or too quiet.
- Close Game Bar and continue playing; the new levels remain active until you change them again or Windows switches the output.
The Audio widget controls Windows’ application mix. Spotify’s own volume control and the physical volume buttons on your keyboard, headset or speakers may also affect the final level, so change one layer at a time when diagnosing a volume problem.
Can I use a controller instead of the Win+G shortcut?
Yes. Xbox documents the controller’s Guide button as another way to open Game Bar. A compatible Xbox controller connected to the PC can therefore replace the keyboard shortcut for opening the overlay. The controller is optional: keyboard and mouse users can use Win+G, and listening does not require a controller-specific audio path.
A headset is likewise optional. Game Bar and Spotify send sound through the Windows output device selected for the desktop or application. Use speakers, ordinary headphones or a gaming headset according to your room and chat requirements.
Why is the Spotify widget missing from Game Bar?
Install the Microsoft Store build
The most common cause is using an older desktop distribution or an outdated widget. Spotify says the current widget is included with the Microsoft Store version of Spotify for Windows. Open Microsoft Store, update Spotify, then restart Spotify and Game Bar.
Do not install the old widget alongside the new one
The legacy widget and the Store integration can briefly overlap after an update. Spotify says the old widget should disappear temporarily as the new one takes over. If two Spotify entries remain, close Game Bar, exit Spotify completely, relaunch the Store app, and open Game Bar again.
Check that Spotify is running and signed in
The current widget does not function as an independent player. Start Spotify for Windows on the same PC, sign in, and leave it running. A minimized window is acceptable; a fully exited desktop process is not.

Refresh Game Bar after updating
Close the game if practical, quit and relaunch Spotify, then start the game and press Win+G again. This forces Game Bar to enumerate the updated widget rather than retaining an earlier session.
What should I do if the widget says “Start listening”?
That message usually means the widget cannot see an active Spotify for Windows session. Open the desktop app, sign in and click Start listening inside the widget if that button is offered. Begin playback in Spotify, then hide and reopen Game Bar with Win+G.

- Confirm the expected account is signed in and start a track or playlist.
- Return to the game and press Win+G.
- Open Spotify again and test play, pause and skip.
If the widget still shows Start listening, restart both applications. Also verify that Spotify is not signed out in a different Windows user session and that the computer has network access.
Why does Win+G do nothing?
Microsoft Learn notes a specific focus limitation: Game Bar cannot open while a PowerShell or Command Prompt window is the focused window. Click the game, desktop or another ordinary application first, then press Win+G. If the shortcut still fails, the title or its configuration may not expose Game Bar even though Game Bar works with most PC games.
- Click inside the game before trying the shortcut again.
- Close or minimize a focused PowerShell or Cmd window.
- Try opening Game Bar on the Windows desktop to determine whether the feature itself responds.
- Check Windows Game Bar settings if it never opens anywhere.
- Restart Windows after installing updates that changed Spotify or Game Bar components.
Do not interpret a failure in one protected or unusual game as proof that Spotify is misconfigured. Xbox’s wording is “most PC games,” which leaves room for title-specific restrictions.
What is the difference between the current and older Spotify widgets?
The Store integration is the recommended setup for a present-day Windows 10 article. The older widget remains relevant only when explaining outdated instructions or a temporary duplicate entry.

The 2019 Xbox Wire announcement is historical context, not the best installation recipe for 2026. Spotify’s September 2026 notice is the relevant description of the current Windows integration.
Does the Xbox PC app version determine whether Game Bar works?
Not necessarily. Xbox’s current PC page lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or higher for the Xbox PC app, but that requirement belongs to the current Xbox PC app page. It should not be treated as a universal minimum for every historical or built-in Game Bar build. For this Spotify workflow, focus first on a functioning Windows 10 Game Bar shortcut, the Microsoft Store Spotify app and a signed-in local desktop session.
