Steam Achievement Manager (SAM) is a third-party Windows utility for viewing and changing some supported Steam achievements and compatible game statistics. To use it, keep Steam open and signed in, close running games, launch SAM’s picker, select a game and the changes you want, then commit them and allow Steam time to sync. SAM cannot reliably change every achievement, and neither Valve nor the reviewed documentation guarantees that using it is free of account or anti-cheat risk.
What Steam Achievement Manager does
SAM is not a Valve product. Its developers describe it as an independent third-party utility; it requires the Steam client to be running, an account signed in, and network access. Its documentation describes a portable Windows ZIP workflow. The SAM site lists version 7.0.41 as released March 19, 2026; check the current release information before downloading because versions and download details can change.
SAM is intended to manage achievements and compatible statistics exposed to Steam. It is not a universal way to edit a game’s save, server records, or every achievement state.
How to use SAM
These steps follow SAM’s independent documentation, not instructions issued by Valve.

- Download the archive from SAM’s official source and extract it. Keep the extracted files together rather than moving the executable away from the rest of the files.
- Open the Steam desktop client and sign in to the account whose achievements you intend to manage. Leave Steam running.
- Exit any running games before opening SAM. This is especially important for multiplayer games and titles protected by VAC or another anti-cheat system.
- Launch
SAM.Picker.exe. Choose the game from the list. If it does not appear, SAM’s documentation says you can enter its Steam App ID. - Open the game’s achievement or statistics view. Select only changes you understand, then review the selection before committing.
- Commit the changes and give Steam time to sync. Check the game’s achievement page or your profile to see whether the state updated.
- Close SAM before reopening the game.
Why a change may not work or last
SAM’s documentation identifies several limits: some achievement states depend on a game server, protected client data, increment-only statistics, or an external service. In those cases, SAM may not be able to apply a change. A game can also restore a state from its own save or progress when it next detects the original conditions.
Relocking an achievement does not necessarily reset the related save or undo in-game progress. If your goal is to correct a failed unlock, distinguish the Steam achievement display from the game’s own progression before changing anything.

Can using an achievement unlocker get you VAC banned?
There is no supported basis here for saying SAM is categorically safe or categorically bannable. Valve’s general VAC guidance says that third-party modifications designed to give one player an advantage over another are cheats or hacks and will trigger a VAC ban. That policy statement does not specifically name or rule on SAM. SAM’s own documentation advises closing games and avoiding use alongside VAC-secured or other anti-cheat-protected games.
Because the cited sources do not settle how every game or anti-cheat system treats SAM, do not use it while a protected game is running or assume that an achievement-only change has a guaranteed risk outcome. If avoiding any possibility of an account or anti-cheat consequence is your priority, do not use third-party achievement tools.

Protect your Steam account and download safely
SAM is third-party software, so verify that you are using its official source and do not hand over your Steam credentials. Valve’s account security recommendations advise caution with software linked by others, researching applications that require installation, and never giving Steam login information to gaming groups or server administrators. Steam login details are not needed to follow SAM’s documented workflow.
For general account context, Valve explains restricted Steam accounts separately. That page does not specifically establish a consequence for SAM use.
