Steam Achievement Manager (SAM) is a portable Windows utility that lets you view Steam achievements and supported game statistics, then stage changes such as unlocking or relocking an achievement. To use it, keep Steam running and signed in, close the game, extract SAM outside the Steam installation folder, open SAM.Picker.exe, select the game, make only the changes you understand, and click Commit Changes. Steam must then synchronize the account.

SAM is not a Valve product and cannot override every game. Server-controlled achievements, protected statistics, increment-only values, and data restored from a game save may remain unchanged or revert. Treat every commit as an account change that can appear on your profile and may not be fully reversible.

What is Steam Achievement Manager?

Steam Achievement Manager is a lightweight, portable application for inspecting and changing Steam achievement states and compatible statistics. The maintained project describes itself as an independent copy and not as software affiliated with or endorsed by Valve. The original project documentation requires Steam to be running, the intended account to be signed in, and network access to be available.

SAM communicates through the local Steam client rather than pretending to be the game server. That distinction determines what it can change. A client can request updates for values that a game exposes to the client, while Steamworks rules prevent a client from setting values assigned by a game server or protected by the game’s configuration.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What SAM can show

  • Achievement names and descriptions.
  • Achievement icons and current locked or unlocked states.
  • Unlock times recorded by Steam.
  • Statistics that the selected game exposes in a compatible format.
  • Whether a value is available for editing or is protected.

What SAM does not guarantee

Seeing an achievement or statistic in the manager does not guarantee that a change will persist. A game can validate its own save data, a server can overwrite the value, or Steamworks limits can reject a request. SAM also does not erase a game’s quests, collectibles, save files, or other internal progression when you clear an achievement.

What do I need before using SAM?

Prepare the account, operating system, and files before opening the manager. The maintained project lists these requirements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Requirement What to prepare
Operating system A Windows desktop with the Steam client installed.
Steam session Steam must be running and signed in to the account whose data you intend to change.
Network Network access is required so Steam can communicate and synchronize changes.
Runtime .NET Framework 4.8.
Process support x86 process support, as listed by the maintained project.
Folder layout Extract SAM to its own folder outside the Steam installation directory and keep the executables together with SAM.API.dll.
Download source Use the maintained project’s GitHub Releases page for the release archive; an unrelated mirror is not an authoritative source.

Close the game you plan to edit before starting. Also close other running games, especially multiplayer titles and games protected by VAC or another anti-cheat system. Do not use SAM during an active multiplayer session.

How do I download and install Steam Achievement Manager?

SAM is portable, so installation means obtaining the release archive and extracting it correctly rather than running a traditional setup wizard.

  1. Open the maintained project’s GitHub Releases page. Choose a published release archive from that project instead of a third-party mirror. Check that the archive contains the manager executables and SAM.API.dll.
  2. Make a dedicated folder. Create a folder outside the Steam installation directory, such as a separate tools folder. Keeping SAM separate avoids mixing its files with Steam’s own files and makes the required DLL easy to find.
  3. Extract the complete archive. Do not run an executable from inside a compressed archive. Extract every file and leave the executables and SAM.API.dll together in the same folder.
  4. Start Steam first. Sign in to the account you want to modify and confirm that Steam is online.
  5. Close games. Exit the target game and any other running games before launching the manager.
  6. Run SAM.Picker.exe. The picker is the entry point used to locate a Steam game and open its manager view.

If Windows reports that the required .NET Framework is missing, install .NET Framework 4.8 and then start the picker again. If the program fails because files are missing, re-extract the full archive and verify that SAM.API.dll is beside the executables.

How do I unlock an achievement with SAM?

Unlocking is a staged operation: SAM prepares a change locally, and Steam receives it only after you commit. Review the selection carefully before the final step.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  1. Open the game picker. With Steam running and the game closed, launch SAM.Picker.exe.
  2. Find the game. Search by its name. If it does not appear, use the game’s numeric Steam App ID in the picker’s manual App ID field.
  3. Open the game manager. Inspect the listed achievement names, descriptions, icons, states, and unlock times so you know which entry you are changing.
  4. Select the achievement. Mark the achievement you want to unlock. Select only entries whose meaning and current state you understand; selecting a large group makes mistakes harder to detect.
  5. Review the pending state. The change is not sent merely because you selected it. Confirm that the intended achievement is marked for unlocking and that unrelated entries are untouched.
  6. Choose Commit Changes. This sends the staged achievement update through Steam. Do not start the game or another multiplayer title while the commit is being made.
  7. Refresh and synchronize. Refresh the manager view, give Steam time to upload the change, and then check the profile or achievement list. Reopen the game only after synchronization has had time to complete.

An unlock timestamp is handled as part of the Steam achievement state displayed by the manager. SAM cannot make a server-controlled achievement unlock if the game refuses client-set values.

How do I relock or reset an achievement?

To relock a supported achievement, open the same game manager, clear the achievement, review the staged change, and select Commit Changes. The operation changes the supported Steam achievement state; it is not a complete reset of the game.

  1. Close the game and leave Steam signed in.
  2. Open SAM.Picker.exe and select the game.
  3. Locate the currently unlocked achievement.
  4. Clear or unselect it using the manager’s relock control.
  5. Review the pending changes and commit them.
  6. Refresh the list and wait for Steam to synchronize before checking the profile.

Clearing an achievement does not necessarily remove the quest, collectible, save entry, or other internal condition that caused it. If the game still sees that condition in its save or on its server, it may award the achievement again the next time it checks. Statistic resets are likewise subject to the game’s Steamworks configuration and may not be available.

Can I edit a Steam statistic with SAM?

SAM can expose compatible integer or floating-point statistics, but only when the game makes them client-editable. Select a statistic only after reading its label and acknowledging SAM’s statistics warning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Statistics that may be editable

  • Integer counters that the game permits a client to change.
  • Floating-point values that are exposed without a server-side lock.
  • Values within the minimum, maximum, and change limits configured by the game.

Statistics that may be unavailable

  • Values marked as protected by the game’s Steamworks configuration.
  • Increment-only counters when the requested operation is a decrease or arbitrary replacement.
  • Values outside configured minimum or maximum bounds.
  • Values that exceed the maximum change permitted in one update.
  • Statistics assigned to an official game server instead of the local client.

When a statistic is unavailable, SAM is detecting a restriction rather than failing to display a hidden edit box. Do not repeatedly submit the same request: a server or the game’s own save logic may simply overwrite it.

Why is SAM not showing my game?

The picker normally discovers games through the Steam client. Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm the account. Steam must be running and signed in to the account that owns or has access to the game. A different account can produce a different game list.
  2. Close every game. Exit the target game and other running games before reopening the picker, particularly multiplayer or anti-cheat-protected titles.
  3. Use the App ID manually. Enter the game’s numeric Steam App ID in SAM when name search does not return it. This bypasses a failed or incomplete search result.
  4. Check the release files. Re-extract the archive outside the Steam folder and make sure SAM.API.dll remains beside the SAM executables.
  5. Verify the runtime. Install .NET Framework 4.8 and ensure x86 process support is available, then restart SAM.
  6. Reconnect Steam. If Steam was offline or its client state is stale, reconnect it, allow the library to refresh, and launch the picker again.

A missing entry does not prove that the game has no Steam achievements. Manual App ID entry is the documented fallback, while a protected or server-driven game may still expose fewer editable fields after it opens.

Why will SAM not change a statistic or achievement?

The most common reason is authority: Steam accepts client requests only for values the game has made client-settable. Valve’s Steamworks rules state, “Stats and achievements that are settable by game servers cannot be set by clients.”

Symptom Likely cause Correct response
The field is unavailable or protected. The game has marked the value as protected or server-controlled. Do not force repeated commits; the restriction is part of the game’s configuration.
A counter refuses a decrease. The statistic is increment-only. Use the game’s own reset or progression system if one exists.
A value outside a range is rejected. Steamworks minimum or maximum bounds. Choose a value within the configured bounds, if the field is otherwise editable.
A large jump is rejected. The game limits the maximum change per update. Respect the configured change limit rather than submitting repeated large jumps.
The change appears briefly, then disappears. The game server or the game’s save data reapplies its own value. Investigate the game’s save and server logic; SAM cannot override the authoritative source.
The manager shows a pending change but Steam still displays the old state. The commit has not synchronized or a local cache has not refreshed. Refresh the view, keep Steam online, and allow synchronization before checking again.

Steam normally maintains local caches for statistics and achievements. Updates can be merged or deferred while offline, so a successful-looking local change is not the same as a confirmed profile update.

What happens after I click Commit Changes?

SAM’s documented workflow keeps selections pending until you explicitly choose Commit Changes. Before committing, inspect every selected achievement and statistic and remove anything unintended.

  1. After committing, refresh the manager view to see whether Steam accepted the new state.
  2. Keep Steam connected and allow time for its local cache and account data to synchronize.
  3. Check the Steam profile or achievement page rather than relying only on the manager’s first display.
  4. Open the game only after synchronization, because the game may read its own save or server state and award or restore values.

Steamworks documentation describes a normal game-side unlock as a call to SetAchievement followed by StoreStats. SAM is not replacing that game’s server authority; it is requesting changes through the Steam client for values that the platform permits the client to set.

Is Steam Achievement Manager safe to use?

There is no blanket safety guarantee. SAM writes to whichever Steam account is currently signed in, and the maintained project warns that changes can appear on the profile and may not always be reversible. No independent usage-rate, success-rate, or safety statistic establishes a universal risk level.

Reduce avoidable risk

  • Download only from the maintained project’s GitHub Releases page.
  • Keep Steam signed in to the intended account and verify the account before editing.
  • Close all games before launching SAM.
  • Never use it during an active multiplayer session.
  • Avoid running it alongside a VAC-secured or other anti-cheat-protected game.
  • Change one small, understood set of entries at a time.
  • Review the pending list immediately before committing.
  • Keep a record of the original state if you are experimenting, while recognizing that a record is not a guaranteed restore mechanism.

SAM is not a Valve product. Valve’s own game and platform rules, together with each title’s server and save design, determine what happens after a client request.

What can SAM not reset?

SAM operates on Steam achievement and supported-statistic data, not on every progression system inside a game. Clearing an achievement does not automatically delete:

  • Quests or quest flags stored in a game save.
  • Collected items, collectibles, or discovered locations.
  • Campaign progress or checkpoints.
  • Cloud or server records that the game treats as authoritative.
  • Other internal values that are not exposed as editable Steam statistics.

If the original condition remains, the game can award the achievement again. If the condition is server-controlled, only the game’s server logic can change it. Repeatedly relocking the Steam entry without addressing that underlying state will not create a clean in-game reset.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How does SAM differ from server-side achievement handling?

The important comparison is not the user interface but where authority resides. The following distinctions explain why a local manager can edit one title successfully and have no effect on another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison point SAM and client-editable data Server-controlled game data
Operating environment Windows desktop with Steam running. The game’s official server or backend determines the value.
Connection path Requests pass through the local Steam client. The client cannot set the value directly.
Achievement relock Supported Steam achievement state can be cleared and committed. A server may restore or ignore the state.
Statistic editing Compatible integer or floating-point values within configured limits may be editable. Protected, increment-only, bounded, or server-assigned values remain restricted.
Persistence Depends on Steam synchronization and the game’s behavior after it reads the data. The authoritative server can overwrite a client-side request.
Commit safeguard Changes remain pending until the user selects Commit Changes. A commit cannot bypass the server’s authority.

These axes are also useful when evaluating another achievement utility: check its operating-system support, whether it talks to the local Steam client or a game server, how it handles relocking, which statistics it can edit, whether its source and release provenance are clear, and whether changes remain pending until an explicit commit.

What does Steam’s own architecture explain?

Steamworks gives games a normal client sequence for achievements: the game calls SetAchievement, then calls StoreStats to upload the unlocked state. Steam also keeps local caches for statistics and achievements and may merge or defer updates when the client is offline. That is why staying online, refreshing the manager, and waiting for synchronization are practical parts of the workflow rather than optional cleanup.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Valve’s 2026 Steamworks documentation states a default initial limit of 100 achievements for games before the profile-features threshold. That figure is a platform documentation limit for the relevant game setup, not a promise that SAM can unlock every possible achievement in every title or alter a game’s server rules.

What should I do if a change goes wrong?

  • The wrong achievement was staged: remove it from the pending selection before committing. If it was already committed, reopen the manager and assess whether the supported state can be changed back, knowing that reversibility is not guaranteed.
  • Steam still shows the old value: keep Steam online, refresh the manager, and allow the local cache and account synchronization to settle before reopening the game.
  • The game immediately restores the old value: stop repeating the commit and inspect whether the game save or official server is authoritative.
  • SAM will not start: verify .NET Framework 4.8, x86 process support, the complete extracted archive, and the presence of SAM.API.dll beside the executables.
  • The game is absent from the picker: confirm the Steam account, close games, and enter the numeric Steam App ID manually.
  • An anti-cheat warning appears: close the protected game and do not run SAM alongside an active VAC-secured or other anti-cheat-protected title.

What should I check before committing?

  • Steam is running, online, and signed in to the correct account.
  • The target game and all other games are closed.
  • The SAM files came from the maintained project’s release process.
  • The archive was extracted outside the Steam installation directory.
  • SAM.Picker.exe and SAM.API.dll are in the same extracted folder.
  • The selected game is correct, using its App ID if necessary.
  • Every selected achievement or statistic is understood.
  • The statistics warning has been acknowledged before editing a statistic.
  • The pending list contains only intended changes.
  • You have allowed Steam time to synchronize after committing.

Used this way, SAM is a narrowly scoped Steam-data editor rather than a universal progression reset. Its reliable boundary is the set of client-editable achievements and statistics that the game and Steamworks configuration permit; anything server-controlled or restored from authoritative game data requires the game’s own systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Steam Achievement Manager on Steam Deck, macOS, or Linux?

The documented setup is for a Windows desktop and lists .NET Framework 4.8 plus x86 process support. A Steam Deck, macOS, or Linux workflow is therefore outside the stated supported requirements; use a compatible Windows environment if you proceed.

Why did an achievement return after I relocked it?

Relocking changes the Steam achievement state but does not remove the underlying quest, collectible, save flag, or server record. When the game checks that condition again, it can award the achievement again.

Can SAM bypass a game’s official server?

No. Valve states that achievements and statistics set by game servers cannot be set by clients. A local commit may be ignored or overwritten whenever the server is authoritative.

What should I do if Steam is offline when I make a change?

Reconnect Steam before relying on the result. Steam can defer or merge achievement and statistic updates while offline, so refresh the manager and verify the profile after the client has synchronized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there an undo button for every SAM change?

No universal undo is guaranteed. A supported achievement may be cleared again, but profile visibility, server data, save data, and game re-awarding behavior can make a change difficult or impossible to reverse completely.
