Steam Cloud is a per-game synchronization service, not a complete backup system. If a game supports it, enable Cloud in Steam, let synchronization finish before changing devices, and keep a separate copy of the game’s actual save folder before replacing or restoring files. The reliable process is: verify support for that title, turn on Cloud, identify both the game’s local save location and Steam’s Cloud cache, compare timestamps when a conflict appears, and preserve an independent backup. Because developers decide which files are uploaded, a Cloud icon does not guarantee that every save, profile, or configuration file is covered.
What is Steam Cloud, and what does it actually save?
Steam Cloud stores files selected by a game’s developer and synchronizes those files through your Steam account. The developer can use Steam’s Cloud API for custom behavior or Auto-Cloud, which syncs configured file groups without additional game code. Players normally do not choose individual files; the game’s implementation determines what is uploaded.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis makes Cloud convenient for moving supported progress between computers, but it is not an automatic, universal backup of every RPG save. A title may omit screenshots, settings, mods, profiles, or an entire save system. The Steam Store page’s Cloud indicator is a useful first check, while the game developer’s support documentation is the authority for exact coverage and save locations.
Cloud synchronization is also different from versioned backup. If a newer local file replaces an older Cloud copy, Steam may not retain a long history that lets you roll back. A separate copy of the real save folder protects you from accidental overwrites, corruption, failed uploads, and mistakes made while resolving a conflict.

How do I check whether an RPG supports Steam Cloud?
Check the game’s Steam Store page for the Steam Cloud logo, then confirm the title’s own support instructions. Steam’s platform can synchronize files across operating systems, but cross-platform play works only when that particular game implements compatible Cloud paths and file handling.
- Open the game’s Store page in the Steam client or on the Steam website.
- Look in the feature information for the Steam Cloud indicator.
- Search the developer or publisher support site for the game name and terms such as save location, Cloud saves, or transfer saves.
- Check whether the documentation lists the operating systems you intend to use and identifies which files are synchronized.
If the page has no Cloud indicator, assume that progress is local until the developer says otherwise. If the indicator is present but your save does not appear on another machine, a failed upload, an unsupported file type, or a title-specific save path may be responsible.

You can enable Cloud globally or for one game. Global settings provide a default, while the per-game setting is the one to inspect when troubleshooting a specific RPG.
Enable Cloud for the Steam client
- Open Steam and select Steam in the upper-left menu.
- Choose Settings on Windows or Linux, or Preferences where that label is used on macOS.
- Open the Cloud section.
- Turn on the option that enables Steam Cloud synchronization for supported applications.
- Close the settings window and allow Steam to finish any pending synchronization.
Enable Cloud for one game
- Open Library and right-click the RPG.
- Select Properties.
- On the General tab, find the Cloud Synchronization setting.
- Turn it on, then close the Properties window.
When Cloud is disabled for a game, progress remains on the machine where it was created. Disabling the setting does not move local saves into a safe archive, so make a manual copy before changing it during a recovery procedure.
Where are Steam Cloud save files stored on my computer?
Steam’s default local Cloud cache is inside the userdata directory. The path differs by operating system:
| Operating system | Default Steam Cloud directory | What you will see inside |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata |
Account-ID folders, then game folders named with Steam appIDs |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata |
Account-ID folders, then appID folders |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata |
Account-ID folders, then appID folders |
Each account folder can contain a numeric folder for a game’s appID. Steam’s documentation uses Dota 2, appID 570, as an example. You can identify an appID from a game’s Steam Store URL or the game’s Steam properties, but the numeric folder is only a clue to Cloud data.

Before copying or deleting anything, use the developer’s instructions to locate the actual save folder.

How do I resolve a Steam Cloud conflict without losing progress?
A conflict means Steam found different local and Cloud versions of one or more synchronized files. Choose the copy that matches your latest legitimate progress only after comparing timestamps and what you did on each device.
Before selecting a version
- Stop launching the game on both computers so neither device creates another save.
- Write down which device you last played, approximately when you saved, and whether you completed a quest, changed characters, or made another identifiable change.
- Take a manual copy of the game’s actual save folder and, if practical, the relevant appID folder under
userdata. Preserve the original files rather than moving them. - Compare the local and Cloud timestamps shown by Steam and the file times in the folders. A timestamp alone is not proof if a system clock was incorrect, so match it with your gameplay history.
Choose the correct copy
When Steam presents the conflict dialog, select the version that corresponds to the newest progress you want to keep. Selecting the wrong side can overwrite the other copy. If you are uncertain, cancel or postpone the choice, go offline only long enough to make independent copies, and inspect the files with the game’s support instructions before deciding.
Steam Support advises addressing the underlying cause of a synchronization error before launching the game. Launching while synchronization is unresolved can create another conflict or cause an older file to become the version that is uploaded.

Offline Mode prevents immediate synchronization; it does not merge files or create a backup. Any changes made offline remain pending until the computer is online again. Use the time offline to preserve copies and identify the desired save, then reconnect and resolve the pending state deliberately.
What should I do if my RPG progress is missing on a new computer?
First determine whether the old computer still has the desired save. Steam cannot recover a file that was never uploaded, and games without Cloud support require the developer’s transfer procedure.
- On the new computer, confirm that you are signed in to the same Steam account and that the game is installed under that account.
- Check the Store page and developer documentation to verify Cloud support and the specific files it covers.
- Do not create new progress in the game until you have checked for the old save; a new file can become the local version in a later sync.
- On the old computer, open Steam while connected to the internet and wait for the game’s Cloud status to finish synchronizing.
- Look in the game’s documented local save folder. If the desired files are there, copy them to a separate location before attempting any transfer.
- Return to the new computer and allow Steam to synchronize. If it reports a conflict, compare the old machine’s files and timestamps with the new machine’s files before choosing.
- If the title does not use Cloud saves, follow the developer’s instructions to copy the actual save folder. Steam Support cannot recover lost saves for games that do not provide a recoverable Cloud copy.
A previous version may have been uploaded if the old machine was offline, Steam reported a failed upload, or the game closed before synchronization completed. In that case, the old machine’s local files are the best chance of recovery, so do not uninstall the game or delete its folders until you have copied them.
How do I make a separate manual backup of an RPG save?
A manual backup is an independent copy of the game’s real save folder, stored somewhere other than the active game directory. Make it before changing Cloud settings, replacing files, restoring an archive, or resolving an uncertain conflict.

- Find the documented save folder. Use the developer’s support page for the exact title and version. Do not assume the Steam
userdatapath is the active location. - Close the game. Wait for the process to exit so a save file is not being written while you copy it.
- Copy, do not move. Duplicate the complete save folder, including subfolders and files with unfamiliar extensions.
- Use a dated destination. Put the copy in a separate folder, another internal drive, or an external drive and name it with the game and date, such as
RPGName-save-2026-10-25. - Preserve the original. Keep the existing active folder untouched until the copied files have been checked.
- Test only a duplicate. If you need to restore, rename or copy the current folder aside first, then place the backup into the location specified by the developer.
- Verify in game. Start the title with Cloud still disabled when the game’s recovery instructions require it, load the recovered character, and confirm the expected quests, inventory, and playtime.
- Re-enable Cloud deliberately. After verification, turn Cloud back on only if the title’s instructions call for it, and resolve any resulting conflict in favor of the verified files.
An external drive is optional; no particular capacity or model is required for ordinary save folders. The important properties are separation from the active folder and retention of more than one dated copy when the save matters.
Why do game-specific instructions matter?
Save formats and recovery paths differ enough that a procedure safe for one RPG can damage another. Official title-specific examples illustrate the differences.
Don’t Starve
Klei documents different locations depending on Cloud configuration. In the Cloud-enabled case described by Klei, files can be under Steamuserdata[Steam ID]219740remote. Klei also documents a Documents location for a workaround that disables Cloud. Those paths apply to the documented game and configuration; they are not a template for other RPGs.
Dead Cells
The official Steam Community instructions for Dead Cells describe turning off Cloud during restoration, using the local save folder and its dated backup archives, checking the recovered files in-game, and only then considering re-enabling Cloud. This workflow is specific to Dead Cells’ files and should not be generalized to another title without its own instructions.

Publisher support pages
Publisher support articles can explain how a particular game’s Steam settings and restoration process interact, but Steam’s own guidance remains the reference for Cloud conflicts, failed synchronization, and default Cloud directories. Always match instructions to the game version and operating system you actually use.
Steam Cloud or a manual copy: which should I rely on?
Use both when the save is valuable. Cloud is convenient for supported files and device changes; a manual copy is independent and gives you a known point-in-time version that Steam may not retain.
| Consideration | Steam Cloud | Separate manual backup |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Enable the client and per-game settings; the developer controls file selection | Find the title’s actual save folder and copy it yourself |
| Convenience | Synchronizes supported files automatically between signed-in devices | Requires a deliberate copy and a schedule you maintain |
| Independence | Not independent if an incorrect local file overwrites the Cloud copy | Independent when stored outside the active game and Steam folders |
| Coverage | Only files implemented by that game; coverage can exclude saves or settings | Can include the complete documented save folder |
| Conflict risk | Local and remote versions can require a choice | No automatic merge; you choose when to replace files |
| Best use | Routine movement between supported devices | Pre-update, pre-mod, pre-restore, and long-term recovery copies |
Neither method protects against every failure. Cloud can synchronize an unwanted state, while a manual copy can be stale or incomplete if you selected the wrong folder. Keeping dated copies and checking a restored save in-game addresses the most common weaknesses.

Can Steam Cloud saves work across Windows, macOS, and Linux?
Steam supports cross-platform Cloud synchronization at the system level, but each game must implement it. The same title may support Cloud on one operating system and not another, or may synchronize only files whose paths and formats are compatible.
- Confirm support for both operating systems in the developer’s documentation.
- Check whether the title uses a common save format or performs a platform-specific conversion.
- Keep a manual copy before opening a save on the second operating system, especially after a major game update.
- Do not infer cross-platform support solely from the Steam Cloud logo; that logo does not describe every platform combination or every file.
What are the most common Steam Cloud save problems?
Cloud is enabled, but the save is absent
Verify that the game actually supports Cloud saves, that you are using the same Steam account, and that synchronization completed on the original computer. Then check the developer’s save path; the active files may not be in userdata.
Steam repeatedly reports a sync failure
Do not launch the game to clear the message. Close the game, preserve the local save folder, check the network and Steam status, and follow Steam’s recovery prompts. Once the underlying error is addressed, reconnect and resolve any conflict using the preserved copies and gameplay timestamps.
The wrong save appears after switching computers
Stop playing on the new computer and locate the desired files on the old one. A failed upload or an earlier version already stored in Cloud can explain the mismatch. Copy the old files before attempting another synchronization, then select the version that matches your intended progress.
I cannot find a game folder under userdata
The title may not use Steam Cloud, may store saves elsewhere, or may use a different account folder. Use the appID only to identify a Cloud cache and consult the developer for the active save path.

A restored file will not load
The backup may belong to a different game version, profile, operating system, or save slot. Restore the complete documented folder rather than one file, keep the current folder archived, and use the title’s support instructions for format-specific recovery.
How large can Cloud files be?
Steamworks documents developer-side limits rather than consumer backup quotas. A single ISteamRemoteStorage::FileWrite or FileWriteStreamWriteChunk call has a maximum of 100 MB, and files above 256 MB may use a non-optimal storage endpoint and transfer more slowly. These thresholds concern how developers implement synchronization; they do not tell you which files your RPG uploads. Ordinary save files are usually far smaller, but the title’s implementation still determines coverage.

What is a safe routine for every RPG update or mod change?
Make a checkpoint before any event that can alter save compatibility.
- Exit the game and wait for Steam Cloud to show that synchronization is complete.
- Copy the complete documented save folder to a dated location outside the game directory.
- Install the update or mod and launch only after the backup exists.
- Load the character and confirm that the expected progress is present.
- If something is wrong, close the game, disable Cloud when the developer’s restoration steps require it, and restore the dated copy to a newly renamed active folder.
- Verify the restored save in-game before reconnecting Cloud or deleting any newer files.
This routine gives Steam Cloud a convenient working copy while preserving a separate recovery point you control. It also leaves the original files available if the first restoration attempt fails.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Steam Cloud keep old versions of my save files?
Steam Cloud synchronization should not be treated as a full version-history system. Its behavior depends on the game’s implementation and the files it uploads, so keep dated manual copies when you need to roll back after corruption, a mod change, or an unwanted overwrite.
Can I transfer an RPG save without installing the game through Steam?
The transfer depends on the title’s save format and support policy, not simply on Steam Cloud. Locate the documented save folder, preserve the original, and follow the developer’s instructions; some games require the Steam installation or a specific profile structure to recognize copied files.
Why does my save show different progress on two computers even though Cloud is enabled?
Cloud may have uploaded an older version, failed to upload the latest file, or excluded the save from synchronization. Stop playing, check the old computer’s local folder, and compare timestamps and gameplay events before selecting a conflict version.
Should I leave Steam Cloud off permanently after restoring a save?
Not necessarily. Keep it off only for the portion of a title-specific recovery procedure that requires local files to be checked first. After you verify the restored progress and preserve a backup, follow the developer’s guidance on re-enabling Cloud and resolve any pending conflict in favor of the verified files.
