How to Use Steam Remote Play Together for Cozy Co-op Games

Steam Remote Play Together turns a supported local multiplayer game into an online session: one person runs the game on their PC, while friends receive a live stream and send their controller input back to that computer. Friends do not need to buy or launch the game when the host is running a compatible title.

For a low-friction cozy night, choose a game whose Steam store page explicitly says Remote Play Together, have a controller ready for each active player, and use Steam’s overlay to send the invitation. The guide below covers the complete setup, controller assignment, game selection, and fixes for the problems that most often interrupt a session.

What Steam Remote Play Together does

Remote Play Together is designed for games that already support local multiplayer on one computer. The host installs the game, signs in to Steam, launches it, and runs the actual session. Steam then streams the host computer’s game video and audio to invited friends, carries voice between the players, and sends each guest’s control input back to the host machine within milliseconds when the connection is fast and stable.

The invited player sees the game rather than the host’s desktop. The host can decide whether to share keyboard and mouse control, and that permission can be changed while people are playing. Each participant may use their own controller. The game still determines how many local players it supports, which devices count as player input, and how those devices are assigned to slots.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

What the guest does not need

A guest does not need to own the game or launch it. Valve’s FAQ describes the feature as inviting Steam Friends into the host’s local co-op session without requiring the friend to own or launch the title. The host does need the game installed and must be the person running it.

Remote Play Together versus ordinary online multiplayer

These are different features. A game can offer online multiplayer through its own servers without supporting Remote Play Together, while a local co-op game can support Remote Play Together even if it has no separate online mode. Check the game’s Steam store page for the exact Remote Play Together label before planning the session.

Requirements before you invite anyone

  • Steam account and client: The host and guests must be signed in to Steam and be connected as Steam Friends.
  • A supported game: The store page must list Remote Play Together. Local co-op by itself is not enough.
  • A host computer that can run the game: The host performs the rendering and game simulation, so its processor, graphics hardware, memory, and free system resources matter more than the guest’s gaming specifications.
  • Input devices: Use one compatible controller per active player when the game is controller-oriented. Keyboard and mouse sharing is available, but it is optional and can create conflicts if several people try to control the same cursor or character.
  • Stable internet paths: Streaming sends video and audio out from the host and returns control input from guests. A fast, consistent connection is more useful than a connection that is briefly very fast but frequently fluctuates. Steam’s cited guidance does not establish a universal bandwidth or latency number.

How to start a Remote Play Together session

  1. Verify support on the store page. Open the game’s Steam listing and look for the Remote Play Together feature label. Do this before buying or scheduling a group session; ordinary online multiplayer support does not substitute for it.
  2. Launch the game as host. Start Steam, sign in, and open the supported title. Enter its local multiplayer or co-op screen if the game requires you to create a lobby before other players can join.
  3. Open the Steam overlay. Press Shift+Tab while the game is running. If the overlay does not appear, check Steam’s in-game overlay setting and make sure the game was launched through Steam.
  4. Open the Friends List. In the overlay, choose the Friends List. Find the person you want to play with, right-click their name, and select the Remote Play Together invitation command.
  5. Have the friend accept in Steam chat. The invitation arrives through the Steam chat window. The guest should accept there rather than looking for a separate in-game purchase or download prompt.
  6. Check player assignments. Return to the Remote Play panel and confirm that every connected controller is assigned to the intended local player. If the game uses a shared keyboard, verify who has keyboard and mouse permission.
  7. Begin the local session. Back in the game, choose its local co-op option and start. A guest who connected successfully should now appear in the player slot the game assigned.

Inviting more than one friend

Repeat the Friends List invitation for each person, then verify the game’s local player limit. Remote Play Together does not increase that limit: a title designed for two local players remains a two-player session, while a title supporting four local players can accept up to four participants if its input layout permits it.

Changing permissions during play

Open the overlay and Remote Play panel to manage keyboard and mouse sharing. Revoke that access if a guest’s keystrokes interfere with menus, typing, or another player’s controls. Controller access can be checked from the same area when someone’s device is not appearing in the correct slot.

Controllers, keyboard and mouse: the least troublesome setup

For most couch-style co-op games, the simplest arrangement is one controller for every active player. Steam passes each player’s controller input to the host, while the game treats those devices as the local controllers it would see in the same room. A PC game controller that is compatible with the host and recognized by Steam is the practical baseline; an Xbox-compatible model is a common choice, but the game’s own support list takes priority.

When keyboard and mouse sharing helps

Sharing keyboard and mouse can work when a game gives one player a keyboard-controlled role or when a second controller is unavailable. The host controls whether the guest may use those devices. Because both players can otherwise issue commands to the same keyboard or cursor, this mode is best used deliberately and turned off once it is no longer needed.

  • Test movement and one confirmation button before beginning a long session.
  • Use one controller per player when the game’s developer recommends controllers.

Cozy games that fit Remote Play Together

Remote Play Together is most enjoyable when the game’s local design matches the group’s mood, size, input preferences, and available time. The two examples below illustrate different kinds of cozy co-op rather than a single definition of cozy.

Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition Two players Gentle, routine-driven management and exploration Optional two-player local co-op; the second player is Daffodil the cat; supports Remote Play Together Two friends who want an unhurried shared world
Unrailed! Up to four players Fast cooperative decisions and short bursts of pressure Online and local co-op; Remote Play Together; full Xbox controller support; the developers recommend a controller Groups that enjoy coordination and an active pace

Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition — a calm two-player choice

The Steam listing describes Spiritfarer as a cozy management game about dying. You build and manage a ferry while farming, mining, fishing, harvesting, cooking, weaving, and crafting. The listing estimates about 30 hours to finish and more than 50 hours to experience everything. Its optional two-player local co-op casts the second participant as Daffodil the cat, and the listing explicitly supports Remote Play Together.

That structure suits two people who enjoy routines: tending resources, improving the boat, and exploring at their own pace. It is not emotionally neutral, however. The store content note references death, disability, mental illness, and suicide. Tell a prospective co-op partner about those themes before inviting them, particularly if the group is looking for uncomplicated comfort gaming.

Unrailed! — teamwork for up to four

Unrailed! asks players to build railway tracks through procedurally generated worlds while keeping the train from derailing. Steam lists both online and local co-op for up to four players, Remote Play Together, and full Xbox controller support. Its developers recommend playing with a controller.

The game is a better match for a group that wants communication, quick handoffs, and a little pressure than for players seeking a purely meditative activity. Each person can gather materials, lay track, clear obstacles, or handle the train, so clear controller assignments and a stable stream matter more as the group grows.

Choosing between the two

  • Mood: Choose Spiritfarer for gentle routines and Unrailed! for energetic teamwork.
  • Group size: Spiritfarer is a two-player experience; Unrailed! supports up to four local players.
  • Input: Both can use Remote Play Together, but Unrailed!’s developer specifically recommends controllers.
  • Session shape: Spiritfarer supports open-ended progress, while Unrailed! creates shorter, objective-focused runs.

Keeping the stream responsive

Remote Play Together is real-time streaming, not a file transfer. The host computer renders the game and sends video and audio to the guests; their controls travel back to the host. Steam describes that input as arriving within milliseconds on a fast internet connection, but the cited guidance does not provide one bandwidth or latency threshold that guarantees smooth play for every title and network.

Reduce load on the host

Close unnecessary applications, overlays, recording tools, and browser tabs when the host computer is struggling. If the game already runs close to the host’s hardware limits, lower its graphics settings or resolution so there is headroom for encoding and streaming. This is especially useful when several guests are watching the same host session.

Prefer consistency over peak speed

A wired connection for the host can remove one source of wireless fluctuation. Guests should use the most stable connection available and pause large downloads or other heavy traffic during the session. These are practical measures rather than a promise of a particular frame rate or latency.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The Remote Play Together option is missing

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page and confirm that it lists Remote Play Together, not merely local or online multiplayer.
  2. Launch the game first; the invitation command may not appear when no supported title is running.
  3. Press Shift+Tab to reopen the overlay, then open the Friends List and right-click the friend’s name.
  4. If the overlay itself is absent, check Steam’s in-game overlay setting and relaunch the game through Steam.

The friend cannot join

  1. Confirm that the invitation was sent to the intended Steam Friend.
  2. Ask the guest to accept in the Steam chat window.
  3. Have the host return to the game’s local co-op screen after acceptance; joining the stream does not always select a game slot automatically.
  4. Check that the title’s local player limit has not already been reached.

The guest connects but has no control

  1. Open the Remote Play panel and verify that the guest’s controller is visible.
  2. Assign that controller to an open player slot in the game’s local multiplayer menu.
  3. If the game expects keyboard input, grant keyboard and mouse sharing temporarily and test again.
  4. Disconnect duplicate or inactive devices so the game does not assign the wrong controller.

Keyboard or mouse input is fighting with another player

Open the Remote Play panel and revoke keyboard and mouse sharing. Give each active participant a controller where the game supports it, then reassign the player slots. Sharing is optional; it should not remain enabled when it causes menu selections, movement, or text entry to conflict.

The picture stutters or audio breaks up

  1. Check that the host PC is not overloaded and lower the game’s graphics load if necessary.
  2. Pause downloads, uploads, cloud synchronization, and video streaming on both ends.
  3. Improve the host and guest network paths, using a more stable connection where possible.
  4. Reconnect the guest after the host has closed other demanding applications.
  5. Retest with fewer participants if the game supports several local players; additional streams and inputs can expose a marginal setup.

There is no universal numeric threshold to apply to every session because Steam’s cited documentation does not publish one. Judge the result by whether controls arrive reliably and the stream remains watchable after reducing host load and network competition.

A repeatable pre-session checklist

  • Read the store page and verify the exact Remote Play Together label.
  • Confirm the host has installed the game and can reach its local co-op menu.
  • Connect one compatible controller for each intended player, especially for controller-oriented games.
  • Close unnecessary host applications and pause bandwidth-heavy activity.
  • Launch the game before opening the overlay.
  • Press Shift+Tab, open Friends List, and send the Remote Play Together invitation.
  • Have every guest accept through Steam chat.
  • Assign controllers to player slots and decide whether keyboard/mouse sharing is needed.
  • Test one movement and one confirmation input before starting a long objective or story segment.

Which setup should you choose?

Use Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition when exactly two people want a calm, progression-focused evening and are comfortable with its serious themes. Choose Unrailed! when up to four friends want controller-led cooperation, rapid decisions, and a more active pace. In either case, the host’s computer and connection carry the technical workload, while each guest contributes a correctly assigned controller through Steam’s overlay invitation flow.
