These steps apply to the AUTUMN Direct hydraulic powder Brick Press, not every soil-block, pollen, or industrial press. Check that your unit has the same chamber, plates, wing nuts, and hydraulic bottle jack before following them; the supplied jack may vary. Read the complete manual for your specific jack before use.

Before you start

  • Set the press on a hard, level surface, away from the edge. Keep children away and keep hands and other body parts clear of moving parts.
  • Read the jack maker’s full manual, including its warnings and maintenance directions. AUTUMN says the supplied third-party bottle jack is designed as a lifting device and should be used only as configured with the Brick Press. Do not exceed its rated capacity or use it for another purpose.
  • Stop and consult the jack manual if you are unsure how to operate it. AUTUMN warns that ignoring manufacturer instructions and safety warnings may result in serious injury or death.

See AUTUMN Direct’s Brick Press instructions and safety page and the Brick Press product page.

How to use the press

  1. Prepare the press. Set the jack aside and confirm its release valve is closed. Remove the wing nuts and both plates.
  2. Lubricate if desired. AUTUMN describes lubrication as optional; if you use it, wipe a suitable lubricant over the inside of the chamber and both plates.
  3. Position the bottom plate and jack. Put the bottom plate inside the chamber with its hole facing down. Position the jack underneath and align its piston with the hole.
  4. Load the material. AUTUMN says to fill the chamber at least halfway for corn starch powder or a material of choice. For air-pocketed material such as crushed recycled plastic, it says to fill the chamber to the top. These are the maker’s general loading directions, not validated recipes for every material.
  5. Secure the top plate. Place the upper plate with its inscription facing up, then secure it with the wing nuts.
  6. Pump the jack. Assemble the handle and pump until you cannot apply additional pressure. Do not keep pumping beyond that point; AUTUMN warns that over-pumping can damage the press.
  7. Let the material set. The product instructions do not specify a set time.
  8. Release pressure and open the chamber. Stand the press upright and slowly turn the jack release valve. Remove the wing nuts. AUTUMN specifies using a flathead screwdriver with a 3/16- to 1/4-inch tip in the socket under the upper plate to lift it, then remove the plate.
  9. Eject the brick. Secure the chamber without the upper plate using the wing nuts. Close the jack release valve and pump until the bottom plate reaches the chamber edge. Remove the brick, then slowly release the valve.
  10. Clean the press. Wipe ordinary residue with a damp cloth; AUTUMN also suggests rubbing alcohol for a more thorough cleaning. Follow the jack maker’s separate maintenance instructions.

What materials can you press?

AUTUMN lists corn starch chunks and bricks, tea, sawdust, paper, and crushed recycled plastic as examples or uses. Its page also mentions mannitol or baby powder chunks. It does not publish material-specific recipes, validated pressure values, moisture specifications, set times, or safety directions for processing each material. Do not assume that the same loading or pressing method is suitable for all of them.

Which Brick Press size should you choose?

AUTUMN lists two configurations. The capacity and dimensions below are manufacturer specifications; brick dimensions are approximate.
