Short answer: Escape from Tarkov’s documented GPS-related item is the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit (GPSA), not a separately verified item officially named “GPS Tracker.” The available item and quest references do not document an activation control, tracking radius, map marker, enemy warning, or any other effect that reveals a PMC’s position. You therefore cannot truthfully be told to crouch, disable it, hide it in a secure container, or use a jammer to prevent detection. First identify the exact item name in your client, then handle it according to its quest and inventory rules.
What “GPS Tracker” means in Tarkov
Players often shorten the name to “GPS tracker,” but that wording is not independently verified as an official Escape from Tarkov item label in the references available for this guide. The likely object is the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit, commonly abbreviated GPSA. It is an electronics item associated with the Lightkeeper progression and the quest Following the Bread Crumbs.

The exact client label matters. Tarkov contains many devices, markers, quest objects and barter items whose informal names circulate in guides or chat. A nickname carried over from another game can point you toward the wrong item, quest or map. Treat “GPS Tracker” as a search phrase until you have checked the complete name shown by your own stash, inspection window, loot panel, quest screen or trader menu.

| Property | Documented value |
|---|---|
| Full name | Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit |
| Category | Electronics |
| Weight | 0.44 kg |
| Inventory footprint | 1 × 1 grid square |
| Flea Market | Cannot be listed |
| Secure container | Cannot be placed inside |
Those are inventory and item-class properties. They do not establish that the module receives a player’s coordinates, transmits them to other PMCs, or creates an in-raid detection effect. “GPS” in an item’s name is not proof of a player-tracking mechanic.
Does the GPS amplifier reveal your position?
No reviewed source documents the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit revealing a PMC’s location. There is no documented activation button, signal radius, map icon, opponent notification, periodic broadcast, detection percentage or line-of-sight rule for the item. The position-disclosure premise is therefore unverified, not a confirmed stealth threat.
| Claim players may hear | Evidence status | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Carrying GPSA automatically broadcasts coordinates | Unverified; no reviewed item reference documents it | Do not treat carrying it as a known location leak |
| Other PMCs receive a warning or map marker | Unverified; no warning or marker is documented | Use normal concealment and movement practices instead of a supposed GPS countermeasure |
| The module has an on/off or activation control | Unverified; no control is documented | Do not search for a hidden toggle as a required step |
| A jammer, crouching or a secure container blocks it | Unsupported; no such countermeasure is documented | Do not promise that any of these actions prevents tracking |
This does not prove that a future patch could never add a tracking mechanic. It means the current references do not establish one. If your client displays a new interaction, warning or quest instruction, record the exact text and patch before assuming older advice still applies.

Identify the item before you enter a raid
Use this sequence whenever a quest, guide or teammate calls something a “GPS tracker.” It prevents you from applying GPSA rules to an unrelated object.
- Inspect the object in your client. Open the item’s inspection view and copy the complete displayed name. “Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit” is the name to which the GPSA information applies.
- Check the item type and footprint. The documented GPSA is an Electronics item occupying a 1 × 1 slot and weighing 0.44 kg. A different category, size or weight is a reason to stop and re-identify it.
- Open the active quest. Look under objectives, required handover items and rewards. The documented association is with Following the Bread Crumbs in the Lightkeeper quest chain.
- Compare the trader or barter screen. The community quest reference associates the GPSA barter with Mechanic loyalty level 4. If your client does not show it, verify your trader level and quest state rather than assuming the item is missing from the game.
- Record your build and mode. Write down the patch, map, raid mode, objective wording and the result you observed. This makes it possible to separate an item-identity mistake from a spawn or progression problem.
How the GPSA fits into quests and progression
Following the Bread Crumbs
The quest reference for Following the Bread Crumbs places the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit in the Lightkeeper progression. It lists one unit as a quest reward and associates a Mechanic barter with loyalty level 4. These details are maintained by the community and can change with a patch, so the quest text and trader screen in your current client take priority.
Read the objective literally. A quest may ask you to find, hand over, obtain, or use an item. Those verbs have different implications for where the object must be and whether a raid result is expected. Do not infer a location-broadcast mechanic from an objective that merely names an electronic component.
Mechanic loyalty level 4
If the barter is absent, check Mechanic’s displayed loyalty level, your account progression and whether prerequisite quests have been completed. A community reference links the barter to loyalty level 4; it does not guarantee that every account, edition or current patch will present the same offer before its prerequisites are met. Refresh the trader screen after confirming the level and quest state, then compare the exact item name rather than searching for the nickname “GPS tracker.”

The GPSA’s quest association explains why players encounter it in progression discussions even though it is not documented as a player-locating gadget. Lightkeeper-related requirements can make an item feel like a special mission device. That narrative importance is separate from a technical claim that the object sends your coordinates to enemies.
Why you cannot find it in Practice mode
The quest overview states: “Quest items do not spawn in the practice game mode.” If you searched Practice and found no Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit for a quest objective, the empty result is expected under that rule. It does not demonstrate a broken spawn, a hidden room, or a GPS signal that is being concealed from you.
Use an appropriate live raid when the objective requires a quest item to spawn. Before repeating runs, verify that the quest is active, the client recognizes the correct item, and the raid mode is not Practice. Keep the quote’s scope in mind: it concerns quest-item spawning. It is not a statement that every electronics item is absent from Practice or that every GPS-related object follows identical rules.

What to do with the item in a live raid
Because no activation or location-disclosure mechanic is documented, there is no evidence-based “stealth mode” for the GPSA. The practical procedure is ordinary quest-item handling:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Confirm the name before deployment. Inspect the object and make sure it is the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit, not an item with a similar nickname.
- Read the current objective. Determine whether the quest asks for possession, extraction, a handover, or another condition. Follow the client’s wording rather than a generic tracker tutorial.
- Enter a raid mode that can provide quest items. Do not use Practice when the objective depends on a quest-item spawn.
- Use normal movement and concealment. Cover, sound discipline, route choice and timing still affect your survival. None should be described as a way to defeat GPSA tracking, because such tracking has not been established.
- Extract or hand over the item as required. The documented inventory rules say the GPSA cannot be placed in a secure container and cannot be listed on the Flea Market. Plan your risk accordingly; do not assume a secure container will protect it during a failed raid.
- Check quest progress after the raid. If the objective did not update, capture the exact result and investigate quest state, mode and item identity before changing your route.
The secure-container restriction is an inventory rule, not a signal rule. It does not imply that the item is broadcasting, and moving it between ordinary inventory slots does not have a documented effect on enemy awareness.

The item never appears
- Reopen inspection and verify the full client label.
- Confirm the relevant quest is active and that its prerequisites are complete.
- Leave Practice mode if the objective requires a quest-item spawn.
- Check the current map and objective wording in the client instead of relying on an unverified guaranteed room, container or spawn-rate claim.
- Record the patch, map, mode and search result so you can compare behavior after a client update.
The Mechanic barter is missing
- Check that Mechanic is at loyalty level 4 as displayed by your account.
- Verify any prerequisite quest or progression condition shown by the client.
- Refresh the trader interface and search for the complete item name.
- Do not assume that a community-maintained barter description is unchanged after a patch.
The handover does not register
- Compare the item’s complete name and inspect whether you have the quest’s required variant.
- Read the handover quantity and condition in the active quest.
- Confirm that the item was obtained in the mode and manner the objective requires.
- Restart the relevant interface, then record whether the item was refused, consumed without progress, or left in your inventory.
- Use the recorded build and wording when checking an official patch note or asking for technical help; “GPS tracker failed” is too ambiguous to diagnose.
Do not confuse the GPSA with the MS2000 marker
The MS2000 is a different object. A secondary explanation describes it as a device used to mark supplies or vehicles and specifically says it does not have GPS functionality. Calling an MS2000 a GPS tracker can send you to the wrong quest instructions and lead you to expect a location signal that the explanation does not describe.
Compare the exact item name, quest role and interaction text. The GPSA is documented as an electronics component linked to Following the Bread Crumbs and Lightkeeper progression. The MS2000 explanation concerns marking supplies or vehicles. Neither description, as reviewed here, establishes that carrying either item exposes a PMC’s live coordinates to other players.

External quest trackers do not change Tarkov’s item logic
Quest-progress websites and companion services can help you organize objectives, but they are separate from Battlestate’s game systems. One service reference describes a quest and item progress tool; it does not document the game’s spawn rules, GPSA behavior, barter conditions or network signaling. An external checklist cannot disable a supposed broadcast, create a quest item in Practice, or repair a handover state.
Use such a service only as an organizational aid and verify every requirement against the current client. Do not interpret a third-party label such as “GPS tracker” as evidence that the game contains an item with that official name.
Claims that should be treated as unsupported
- The amplifier automatically broadcasts your coordinates.
- Enemies receive a notification when you carry or activate it.
- The item has a known signal radius, detection chance or map marker.
- Crouching, placing it in a secure container, turning it off or equipping a jammer prevents tracking.
- It has a guaranteed Labs spawn, fixed room, fixed container or published spawn rate.
- An external tracker service can repair the game’s item logic.
None of these claims is established by the reviewed references. The absence of a documented mechanic is not a license to invent a countermeasure. If a future client update adds an interaction or warning, rely on the new in-game text and identify the patch when describing it.
A reliable checklist before your next attempt
- Read the complete item name in the client.
- Confirm that it is the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit if you intend to apply GPSA guidance.
- Open Following the Bread Crumbs and read the current objective and reward text.
- Check Lightkeeper progression and Mechanic loyalty level 4 requirements where relevant.
- Avoid Practice mode for quest-item searches because quest items do not spawn there.
- Remember the 0.44 kg weight, 1 × 1 footprint, Flea Market restriction and secure-container restriction when planning inventory.
- Do not claim that the item reveals your position; that effect is unverified.
- Record patch, map, mode, objective wording and the exact failure if progress does not update.
What you can safely conclude
In current documented information, “GPS Tracker” is a nickname or ambiguity, not a separately verified official item name. The likely match is the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit, an electronics and quest-related object tied to Following the Bread Crumbs and Lightkeeper progression. A community reference associates its Mechanic barter with loyalty level 4, while the quest overview explicitly excludes Practice mode from quest-item spawning.
Most importantly, no reviewed source establishes that the GPSA exposes a PMC’s position. Handle it as a risky quest item because it cannot go into a secure container, not because it is proven to transmit your location. When your client shows a different name or behavior, stop using the nickname, capture the exact text and re-evaluate the item from that evidence.
