Use Diablo III’s map to orient yourself, locate waypoints and check selected activity markers; use the minimap for nearby or specially marked targets. The exact button or key for opening the full map depends on your platform and edition, so check the game’s Controls menu rather than assuming a universal shortcut.

Open the map on your platform

Control bindings can vary across platforms and editions. The available historical console reference lists D-pad Down as Toggle Map for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. That binding should not be treated as confirmed for current consoles or other editions.

On PC, the current map key was not established here. To find the right control, open the game’s Options or Settings menu and inspect Controls for the map action; use the displayed binding for your setup.

Use the waypoint map to navigate

Diablo III’s waypoint interface changed from a list to a map in Patch 2.0.1. Blizzard described the update this way: “The waypoint list has been replaced with a waypoint map.” You can use that map to orient yourself and select available waypoints for travel.

Read the minimap markers in context

The minimap can show selected markers, but it does not mean every enemy or point of interest is always marked. Blizzard’s Patch 2.4.2 notes specify unique minimap icons for Pylons in Nephalem Rifts and the Menagerist Goblin.

Some markers are visible regardless of distance. Patch 2.2.0 says Rift Guardian positions always appear on the map or minimap regardless of how far away the Guardian is. If you are looking for one during a Rift, check those displays rather than relying only on what is on screen.
