The Microsoft Surface app is a control and support hub for Surface hardware. On a Windows PC, open it from Start by searching for Surface; if it is not installed, get it from Microsoft Store. From there you can view device, charging and warranty details, open Microsoft’s integrated help, check driver and firmware status, adjust Surface Pen pressure, and configure supported keyboard touchpad accessibility options. Surface Hub 2S has a separate Start-menu workflow with additional audio, Bluetooth-accessory battery, inking and device-information controls. An iPhone companion app is intended for Surface earbuds and headphones rather than for managing a Windows Surface computer. The exact controls shown depend on your Surface model, connected accessory, Windows build and region.
What is the Microsoft Surface app used for?
Microsoft Surface is a companion utility that combines support information with controls for compatible Surface hardware. It can expose device details, charging status, warranty information and connected-accessory settings in one place. Its integrated help area is designed to provide answers and troubleshooting guidance without making you search separately for every issue.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The app is not one identical experience on every platform. A Windows installation focuses on Surface PCs and accessories; Surface Hub 2S adds room-device and safety information; and the iPhone companion app focuses on Surface earbuds and headphones. Treat the platform and hardware you are actually using as the starting point for every workflow.
How do I open or install the Surface app on Windows?
On a Windows PC, the fastest route is Start search. If the app does not appear, install it from Microsoft Store and repeat the search.

- Select Start.
- Type Surface in the search box.
- Select the Surface app in the results.
- If no Surface app appears, open Microsoft Store, search for Surface, install the app, then search for Surface from Start again.
For organizations deploying the Windows 11 package listed by Microsoft Download Center, the package supports x64 and Arm64 systems and requires Windows 11 version 22631 or higher. Microsoft lists that package as published on July 29, 2026, at 240.0 MB, with the filename Microsoft.SurfaceHub_76.5120.174.0_Desktop_X64.Arm64.msixbundle. That package information is specifically associated with the Windows 11 PC and Surface Hub distribution; your Store listing can present a different delivery mechanism or version.
How do I see my Surface device, charging and warranty information?
Open the Surface app and use its device and support areas to inspect the information Microsoft exposes for your hardware. The available cards and labels can differ by model, but the app is intended to bring together device details, charging information, warranty information and connected-accessory controls.

- Warranty information: check the warranty details associated with the recognized Surface.
- Accessory controls: select a connected compatible accessory when the app exposes settings for it.
- Integrated help: open the help area for Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance and support answers.
If a device or accessory does not appear, first confirm that it is the hardware you intend to manage and that Windows recognizes the connection. A missing control does not necessarily indicate a fault: Microsoft says the options vary with the Surface model and accessory.
How do I use the Surface app to check for driver and firmware updates?
Use Help & support in the Surface app to see the update status. When updates are available, selecting Check for updates opens Windows Update, where installation takes place.
- Launch the Surface app from Start.
- Open Help & support.
- Review the displayed update status.
- Select Check for updates when the option is offered.
- Continue in the Windows Update screen that opens and follow Windows’ installation prompts.
This workflow uses the Surface app as the place to discover the status, while Windows Update performs the update process. Keep that distinction in mind if you return to the Surface app expecting an in-app progress installer.
How do I change Surface Pen pressure and check its battery?
Connect the compatible Surface Pen, open the Surface app, choose the Pen tab, and adjust the pressure control shown there. The same tab can report the pen’s battery level.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
- Open the Surface app.
- Select the Pen tab.
- Move the pen-pressure control to the response you want.
- Check the battery level displayed for the pen.
Pen pressure changes how much force is needed for the supported inking experience. The app does not contain every pen preference: Microsoft directs users to Windows pen settings for top-button shortcuts and for choosing writing-hand options. If you need to change a shortcut or handedness, leave the Surface app and use those Windows settings instead.
How do I customize a Surface keyboard touchpad?
For a compatible keyboard, connect it first. The Surface app then lets you select the keyboard shown at the bottom of the app and open Touchpad settings. The key accessibility feature documented by Microsoft is Adaptive Touch.
- Connect the compatible Surface keyboard to the device.
- Open the Surface app and select the keyboard displayed at the bottom of the window.
- Choose Touchpad settings.
- Turn Adaptive Touch on when you want the supported accessibility behavior.
- Adjust the available controls for your setup.
Documented controls can include the size of the right-click region, the double-click interval, and which body areas may provide touchpad input. Depending on the model, you may be able to allow input from a palm, foot, hand edge or residual limb. These choices are not universal; the app only displays options supported by the specific Surface keyboard and Surface model.
What can the Surface app do on Surface Hub 2S?
On Surface Hub 2S, open Start > All apps > Surface. This version exposes controls and information suited to the collaborative display rather than simply duplicating the Windows PC view.
- Audio: access audio controls for the Hub.
- Bluetooth accessories: view battery health for connected Bluetooth accessories.
- Pen and inking: adjust pen pressure and inking thickness.
- Device identity: view the device name, serial number and model.
- Software and firmware context: view UEFI and driver versions.
- Compliance and ownership information: access safety, regulatory and warranty information.
Surface Hub 2S therefore offers administrators and users a broader status view than the ordinary accessory workflow. If a control is absent, check that you are using the Hub-specific app path and the connected hardware supported by that Hub.
What does the Surface companion app do on iPhone?
The iPhone app is an accessory companion for Surface earbuds and headphones. It is not the iPhone equivalent of every Windows Surface-PC function.

Choose the workflow by platform, hardware and task rather than assuming that every Surface-branded control lives in one app. This comparison shows where the documented functions belong.
| Platform | Hardware managed | Documented tasks |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Surface device, compatible Pen and compatible keyboard/touchpad | Device, charging and warranty information; integrated help; driver and firmware status; Pen pressure and battery; Adaptive Touch and related touchpad controls |
| Surface Hub 2S | Hub, connected Bluetooth accessories and pens | Audio; Bluetooth-accessory battery health; pen pressure and inking thickness; name, serial, model, UEFI and driver versions; safety, regulatory and warranty information |
| iPhone | Surface earbuds and headphones | Firmware, device information, battery, volume, personalization, equalizer, connected-device management, language, factory reset, tutorials and feedback |
Compatibility is conditional. Microsoft’s documented controls can change with the Surface model, accessory, Windows build and region. A feature listed for a keyboard, Pen, Hub or audio accessory should not be assumed to appear for another product in the same family.
How should I troubleshoot a missing app or missing control?
Work through the symptom that matches what you see. The goal is to separate an installation problem from a compatibility limitation.
The Surface app is missing from Start
- Search Start for Surface again to confirm the spelling.
- Open Microsoft Store and install the Surface app if it is not present.
- Return to Start search and launch the newly installed app.
This is the documented installation path; it avoids treating a missing Start result as proof that your Surface hardware is unsupported.

The update check does not show an installer
Use Help & support > Check for updates and watch for Windows Update to open. The Surface app identifies the update route, while Windows Update handles the installation interface.
The Pen tab or pressure control is absent
Check that the Pen is the connected accessory you intend to configure. The pressure and battery controls are associated with the Pen tab and supported hardware; top-button shortcuts and writing-hand choices belong in Windows pen settings instead.
Adaptive Touch options are missing
Confirm that the keyboard is connected and selected at the bottom of the Surface app before opening Touchpad settings. The available Adaptive Touch controls depend on the specific keyboard and Surface model, so a shorter list can be expected.
A Hub control is not available
On Surface Hub 2S, launch the app through Start > All apps > Surface and verify that the relevant accessory is connected. Audio, Bluetooth battery, inking, version and regulatory panels are tied to the Hub context and its recognized devices.
What should I check before relying on the app for support?
Use the app as a diagnostic starting point, then record the details it exposes when you need help from an administrator or Microsoft support. A concise record makes it easier to identify whether a problem is tied to hardware, software or an accessory.
- Note the Surface model and the accessory model shown by the app.
- Record charging or battery information before changing cables or accessories.
- Check the warranty information and keep the displayed device identity available.
- For update issues, note the status in Help & support and the Windows Update result that follows.
- For a Hub, capture the device name, serial number, model, UEFI version and driver version.
- For a Pen or keyboard, record which tab and controls are visible, because feature availability is model-dependent.
This approach prevents a common mistake: treating the presence of a Surface label as a guarantee that two different Surface products expose the same settings.

How do I use the app as a regular maintenance routine?
A short periodic check keeps the app useful without changing settings unnecessarily. Start with status information, then make only the accessory adjustment you need.
- Open the Surface app from Start, or use Start > All apps > Surface on Surface Hub 2S.
- Review device, charging and warranty information.
- Open Help & support and select Check for updates when you want to verify driver or firmware status.
- Inspect the Pen tab when pen pressure or battery level matters.
- Select a connected keyboard and open Touchpad settings only when you need to change Adaptive Touch or another documented touchpad option.
- On a Hub, review audio, accessory battery and version information as part of the device check.
Keeping these tasks in their platform-specific locations makes the app easier to use: Windows Update remains the installation destination for updates, Windows pen settings handle top-button and handedness preferences, and the iPhone companion app handles Surface audio accessories.

Why does my Surface app show fewer settings than a guide or another computer?
Microsoft ties controls to the exact Surface model, connected accessory, Windows build and region. A Pen, keyboard, Hub and audio accessory can therefore expose different tabs even when they use the Surface name.
Where do I change Surface Pen top-button shortcuts?
Use Windows pen settings rather than the Surface app. The Surface app’s Pen tab is for pressure and battery information; Microsoft places top-button shortcuts and writing-hand choices in the Windows settings area.
Can I install the listed Windows package on an older Windows 11 build?
The Microsoft Download Center package described here requires Windows 11 version 22631 or higher and supports x64 and Arm64 systems. If your build is older, the package requirement is not met even if the computer is otherwise Surface hardware.
Is the iPhone app meant to manage my entire Surface laptop?
No. The iPhone listing describes an accessory app for Surface earbuds and headphones, with audio-device firmware, battery, equalizer, connected-device, reset and tutorial functions. Windows is the platform documented for Surface PC, Pen and keyboard management.

What information is useful when contacting support about a Surface Hub 2S?
Record the Hub’s device name, serial number, model, UEFI version and driver version from the Surface app. Including those identifiers helps distinguish a Hub configuration issue from an accessory or software-version issue.
