scp copies files between your computer and a VPS through an SSH connection. Put the local path first when uploading, the VPS path first when downloading, add -i for a specific SSH key, use uppercase -P for a non-standard port, and add -r for a directory tree.

Once an SSH connection with the same user, key, host and port works, scp normally uses that connection to transfer the file.

What scp does and what you need first
OpenSSH describes scp as a tool that “copies files between hosts on a network.” In a VPS workflow, one host is your local computer and the other is the virtual private server. The transfer is protected by SSH encryption and authentication; scp does not create a separate password or encryption system.
You need four pieces of information from your VPS setup:

- The VPS DNS name or IP address, such as
vps.exampleor203.0.113.10. - The login account, such as
deploy. - The SSH port, usually the server’s configured port. Use
22only when that is actually the configured port. - The authentication method: an accepted password or, preferably, a private key held on your local computer.
The destination directory must already exist, and the authenticated account must be allowed to write there. A successful SSH login alone does not grant permission to write every directory on the VPS.
Understand the command form
The general form is:
scp [options] source targetEither side can be local or remote. A remote location is written as [user@]host:path; OpenSSH also accepts an scp:// URI. In practice, include the username when it differs from your local account so that the command is unambiguous.

A trailing slash communicates that the target is a directory. If you specify a filename at the destination, scp writes the transfer under that name.
Upload a file to the VPS
Copy one file into a remote directory
Run this on your local computer:
scp ./local-file.txt [email protected]:/home/deploy/./local-file.txt is relative to the directory in which you run the command. The remote account is deploy, the server address is 203.0.113.10, and the destination directory is /home/deploy/. If the directory exists and is writable by deploy, the resulting file is /home/deploy/local-file.txt.
Upload and choose a different remote filename
scp ./build/app.tar.gz [email protected]:/tmp/app-release.tar.gzHere the source remains app.tar.gz, while the remote copy is named app-release.tar.gz. The parent directory, /tmp, must exist and allow the login account to create the file.
Upload several files in one command
List multiple local source paths and put the remote directory last:
scp ./app.conf ./app.tar.gz [email protected]:/home/deploy/Every source must be readable by the local account. Keeping the destination as a directory avoids accidentally treating one of the source names as a remote filename.
Download a file from the VPS
Copy a remote file into a local directory
scp [email protected]:/var/log/app.log ./logs/The remote path is first because this is a download. The local ./logs/ directory must exist and be writable by your local account. The downloaded file keeps the remote basename, app.log.
Save the download under a new local name
scp [email protected]:/var/log/app.log ./logs/app-previous.logUse an explicit local filename when you want to preserve an older copy or fit an existing backup naming scheme.

Copy a directory tree
Add -r to recursively copy a directory and its contents:

The OpenSSH manual notes that symbolic links encountered while traversing a directory with -r are followed. Check a tree that contains links before transferring it if following those links could include files outside the directory you intended to copy.
The same option works for downloading a directory:
scp -r [email protected]:/home/deploy/releases ./releases-backup/Do not add -r to a regular-file transfer; use it when a source or target operation actually involves a directory tree.
Use an SSH key, custom port or jump host
Select a private key with -i
scp -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 ./backup.tar.gz [email protected]:/home/deploy/The -i option selects the identity file used for public-key authentication. Keep this private key on your local computer, protect its file permissions, and never copy the private key to the VPS as part of a file-transfer workflow. The corresponding public key must already be accepted for the remote account.
If the key is in the default SSH location, you may not need -i. Specify it explicitly when several keys are available or when the server requires a particular identity.
Connect to a non-standard SSH port with uppercase -P
scp -P 2222 ./backup.tar.gz [email protected]:/home/deploy/-P selects the remote SSH port. It is uppercase on purpose. Lowercase -p means something else: it preserves the source file’s modification times, access times and mode bits.
Combine key, port and recursive transfer options
scp -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 -P 2222 -r ./site [email protected]:/var/www/Options can be combined before the source and target. When diagnosing a failure, separate the concerns: first verify the key and port with a plain SSH login, then add -r or other transfer options.
Reach the VPS through a bastion host
Use -J (ProxyJump) when the VPS is reachable only through an intermediate SSH host:
scp -J [email protected] ./local-file [email protected]:/home/deploy/The jump host handles the connection path; the final destination is still [email protected]. For other SSH configuration settings, pass an option with -o.

Handle destination paths and privilege boundaries
Protected directories such as /var/www often are not writable by an ordinary deployment account. Running scp with a path that the account cannot write produces a permission error; scp does not automatically invoke sudo on the remote side.
Use a two-step transfer instead: copy to a user-owned directory, then run a privileged install command through SSH.
scp ./app.tar.gz [email protected]:/home/deploy/
ssh [email protected] 'sudo install -m 0644 /home/deploy/app.tar.gz /var/www/app.tar.gz'The first command needs write access only to /home/deploy/. The second command runs on the VPS and uses the account’s configured sudo privilege to place the file at the protected path with mode 0644. Adjust the destination and mode to match your application’s ownership and permission policy.
Before a transfer, confirm the remote directory rather than guessing:

Avoid local-path parsing mistakes
OpenSSH treats a colon in a source or target as a possible host separator. A Windows path such as C:UsersNamefile.txt can therefore be misread when entered unquoted in a shell. Use an explicit relative or absolute local path and quote it according to the shell you are using.
For example, make the local side unmistakable in a compatible shell:
scp './build/app.tar.gz' [email protected]:/home/deploy/In a Windows shell, use that shell’s normal quoting and path conventions. The important point is to prevent the local drive-letter colon from being interpreted as the separator in a remote specification.

Keep -q out of your first diagnostic attempt. Hiding the progress meter and diagnostics can make a working transfer look idle and can conceal the error needed to fix a failed one.

Plan a repeatable transfer
For a one-off copy, a single command is usually enough. For a deployment, make the source, destination and verification explicit so that an accidental path does not overwrite the wrong file. Build or package the application locally, copy the resulting archive to a staging directory such as /home/deploy/releases/, and give each release a distinct filename. You can then inspect the uploaded file before installing it.
Use a destination filename rather than relying on a shell wildcard when the transfer is part of a script. Wildcards are expanded by the local shell for local sources, while a remote wildcard is interpreted by the remote side and can behave differently across shells. Explicit paths are easier to audit and produce clearer errors.
If a transfer is interrupted, rerun the command after checking whether a partial destination file exists. A subsequent copy to the same filename can replace it, so do not point a deployment service at that file until you have confirmed the transfer completed. For large artifacts, keeping the archive in a staging directory until verification avoids exposing an incomplete file at the live path.
A reliable deployment sequence
- Confirm the account, address and port. Use the DNS name or IP supplied for the VPS and the login username created there.
- Test SSH with the exact identity and port.
ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 -p 2222 [email protected] - Check the destination directory. From the SSH session, verify that the path exists and that the account can write there. A user-owned staging directory such as
/home/deploy/is suitable when the final location is protected. - Transfer the file or tree. Put the local path first for an upload, add
-rfor a directory, and specify-ior uppercase-Pwhen needed. - Verify the remote result. Log in and use
ls -laon the destination to confirm the filename and location before using the file in a deployment. - Install into a protected path only through an authorized command. Copy to the staging directory first, then use an SSH command with the required privilege, such as
sudo install.
Troubleshoot common failures
The SSH connection fails before transfer
Run the same connection independently:
ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 -p 2222 [email protected]If this cannot connect, scp cannot succeed with those settings. Check the DNS name or IP, firewall rules, port, username and selected key. Add -v to the ssh or scp command for connection and authentication diagnostics.
“No such file or directory” appears
Determine which side is missing the path. For a remote path, inspect it directly:
ssh [email protected] 'pwd; ls -la /path'Check spelling, capitalization and whether the parent directory exists. For a local path, run the command from the expected working directory or use an explicit absolute path. When copying a directory, confirm that the source is really a directory and that -r is present.
“Permission denied” appears
Identify whether the denial is local authentication, local file reading, remote login or remote writing. If SSH authentication succeeds but the destination rejects the upload, choose a directory writable by the login user or correct the remote ownership and permissions. For protected locations, use the staging-and-sudo install pattern rather than attempting to make scp run as root.
The host-key prompt is unexpected
Before accepting a new host key, verify its fingerprint through the VPS provider’s trusted console or documentation. This check confirms that the server you are contacting is the intended one. Do not bypass host-key verification merely to make a first transfer complete.
The command seems silent
Remove -q. That option suppresses the progress meter and diagnostics. If more detail is needed, add -v and inspect the SSH negotiation output.

Security practices that belong in every transfer
- Prefer public-key authentication and select the intended private key with
-iwhen necessary. - Keep private keys on the local computer, protect their permissions, and never upload them to the VPS.
- Verify a new host key fingerprint through a trusted VPS console or provider document before accepting it.
- Avoid putting passwords, tokens or other secrets directly in a command that will remain in shell history.
- Use a user-owned staging directory and a narrowly scoped privileged install command instead of granting broad write access to a protected web directory.
Protocol behavior and compatibility
The current OpenSSH implementation uses SFTP by default while retaining the familiar scp command syntax. It still runs over an SSH connection and uses the same authentication as an SSH login. The legacy scp protocol is selected only with uppercase -O for compatibility cases documented in the OpenSSH manual. Use that mode only when an older endpoint requires it; otherwise leave the default protocol in place.

The URI form is available when you need it:
scp scp://[email protected]/home/deploy/app.tar.gz ./For ordinary VPS work, the shorter user@host:path form is easier to read and less likely to hide a path mistake.

Check whether the missing path is local or remote. Use pwd and an absolute local path for local files; use ssh user@host 'ls -la /path' to verify the remote directory, spelling and capitalization.
How do I copy through a bastion host?
