Xbox Family Settings lets a parent manage a child’s Xbox activity from an iPhone or Android phone. After you connect the child’s Microsoft account to a Microsoft family group, you can set different play schedules for each day, pause play, approve extra time, filter games by age rating, control multiplayer and communication, manage friend requests, approve purchases, and review activity reports. It supports Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles, with some controls also applying to a Windows PC when the child uses the family-linked Microsoft and Xbox accounts. The app does not extend these Xbox settings to mobile games. This guide explains the setup, every major control, account requirements, browser limitations, and the fixes for the problems parents encounter most often.

What does the Xbox Family Settings app control?

The app is a parent-facing control panel for Xbox consoles. You install it on the parent’s phone, sign in with the parent Microsoft account, and manage each child through the Microsoft family group. Xbox has described the service as offering more than 20 customizable family-setting features; the exact controls available can depend on the child account, device, and Microsoft account configuration.

Its controls fall into separate areas, so you can allow a child to play online while restricting purchases, or permit a mature game while blocking communication. The main options are:

Control area What you can do
Screen time Set a daily time limit, define permitted hours, use different schedules on different days, pause play, and respond to requests for more time.
Content Use age-based settings to block games and apps above the child’s permitted maturity level.
Multiplayer and communication Allow play and communication with everyone, friends only, or nobody; manage multiplayer, clubs, cross-network play, friend lists, and incoming friend requests.
Spending Review spending history, receive ask-to-buy requests, approve or reject purchases, and manage funds or account balances.
Activity reports Review daily and weekly reports showing connected-device use and the games or apps used.

These settings are administered through the family relationship rather than a guest profile on the console. That account-based design is why matching the child’s Microsoft and Xbox sign-ins is the most important setup detail.

What do I need before setting up Xbox Family Settings?

You need a compatible phone, a parent Microsoft account, a Microsoft family group, and a child account that will be used on the console. The Xbox page lists iOS 13 or later and Android 8.0 or later for the mobile app.

  • An iPhone or Android phone meeting the listed operating-system requirement.
  • A parent Microsoft account that will act as the family organizer.
  • A child Microsoft account added to the family group.
  • An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console. If you already own a compatible console, buying new hardware is unnecessary; an Xbox Series X console is one compatible example, and Xbox Series S is supported as well.
  • The child’s Xbox profile must be the same profile connected to the Microsoft account in the family group.

The family organizer administers members, limits, permissions, and activity reports. If another adult needs to manage settings, confirm that person’s family role in the Microsoft family group before relying on the app for day-to-day decisions.

How do I set up the Xbox Family Settings app?

Complete the account setup first, then connect the child’s console sign-in. The app cannot reliably attribute limits or reports if the child plays under a different Microsoft account.

  1. Install the app. Download Xbox Family Settings on the parent’s iOS or Android phone and sign in with the parent Microsoft account.
  2. Open the family group. Go to account.microsoft.com/family, sign in, and create or open the Microsoft family group.
  3. Add the child. Add the child’s Microsoft account to the group and confirm the family roles. The parent who needs to administer members and limits must be the family organizer.
  4. Select the child in the app. Open Xbox Family Settings and choose the child’s profile. If you manage more than one child, work on one profile at a time so each schedule, content rule, and permission is assigned to the intended account.
  5. Check the console account. On the Xbox, have the child sign in with the same Microsoft account and Xbox profile used in the family group. Do not assume that a different local profile, guest account, or another Microsoft login will inherit the settings.
  6. Set an initial rule and verify it. Start with a screen-time schedule or content filter, save it, and confirm that the selected child profile shows the change before configuring the remaining controls.

If a setting appears to have no effect, return to this account check before changing the rule repeatedly. The app’s controls and reports depend on the family-linked account being the one used to play.

How do I set screen-time limits on Xbox?

Open the child’s profile in Xbox Family Settings, choose screen time, select a day, define the permitted hours and daily limit, then save. Each day can have its own schedule, so school nights, weekends, and holidays do not have to use the same allowance.

  1. Select the child’s profile.
  2. Open the screen-time controls.
  3. Choose the day you want to configure.
  4. Set the time range in which play is permitted.
  5. Set the maximum amount of play time for that day.
  6. Save the schedule and repeat for other days that need different rules.

The permitted range and the daily limit serve different purposes: the range defines when play may occur, while the limit defines how much time is available during that day. Review both when a child says a schedule is blocking play earlier than expected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I pause play or grant extra time?

Use the child’s profile to pause play temporarily when you need an immediate stop without rewriting the weekly schedule. When the child requests additional time, the app lets you respond to that request; approve it only for the situation you intend, rather than permanently increasing the daily allowance.

How do I block Xbox games and apps by age?

Use the content settings for the child and choose the permitted age or maturity level. Games and apps above that level are blocked for that child account, giving you a rating-based baseline instead of requiring you to identify every title individually.

  1. Select the child’s profile in Xbox Family Settings.
  2. Open the content or age-filter controls.
  3. Choose the child’s permitted maturity level.
  4. Save the change and check that the rule is attached to the correct child profile.

Microsoft Family Safety also exposes app and game content filters. If your household uses those controls alongside Xbox settings, keep the child’s Microsoft account consistent so the filters apply to the same identity. An age filter addresses game and app maturity; it is separate from multiplayer, chat, and spending permissions.

How do I control multiplayer, chat, clubs, and friend requests?

Communication and multiplayer are separate decisions from game age ratings. For the child’s profile, choose whether play or communication is allowed with everyone, friends only, or nobody, then review the additional social controls available in the app.

The app covers multiplayer, clubs, cross-network play, friend lists, and incoming friend requests. A practical setup is to decide these in order:

  1. Choose the broad audience for multiplayer and communication: everyone, friends only, or nobody.
  2. Review multiplayer access if the child can play games locally but should not join online sessions.
  3. Set the club and cross-network options according to whether interaction outside the Xbox network is acceptable.
  4. Check the friend-list and incoming-request controls so new contacts do not bypass the audience rule you selected.

Use the friend-request setting when you want the child to keep an existing friends-only experience but require an adult decision before accepting new contacts. Revisit the settings when a game’s social features change, because a title can use multiplayer, clubs, or cross-network play differently.

How do I stop unauthorized Xbox purchases?

Open the child’s spending controls to review purchases, handle ask-to-buy requests, and manage available funds or account balances. Approval is a separate control from play time and content filtering, so configure it even if the child’s games are already age-appropriate.

  1. Select the child’s profile.
  2. Open spending or purchase controls.
  3. Review the spending history for the account.
  4. Turn on the ask-to-buy workflow if you want requests routed to the parent.
  5. Approve or reject each request from the app, and review the account’s funds or balance when deciding whether a purchase should proceed.

Checking the history periodically helps distinguish a one-time approved purchase from repeated requests. Keep purchase decisions tied to the child profile that generated the request; changing a different family member’s settings will not address the original account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do Xbox activity reports work?

Xbox Family Settings provides daily and weekly reports showing when the child used connected devices and which games or apps they used. Reports are useful for checking whether a schedule reflects actual use, but they depend on correct account attribution.

On Xbox, remind the child to sign out when finished. If another person continues using the same signed-in account, later activity can be attributed to the child and make the report misleading. When a report looks incomplete or unfamiliar, first confirm which Microsoft and Xbox profile was active during the session.

Which devices and browsers are covered?

The app manages Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Xbox content and screen-time limits can also apply to Windows PCs when the child is signed in with the Microsoft account and Xbox profile that belong to the family group. The Xbox Family Settings app does not extend these Xbox controls to mobile gaming experiences.

Device or experience Coverage Condition
Xbox One Supported Child uses the family-linked Microsoft and Xbox account.
Xbox Series X|S Supported Child uses the family-linked Microsoft and Xbox account.
Windows PC Content and screen-time limits can apply The child must sign in with the Microsoft account and Xbox profile in the family group.
Mobile gaming Not covered by the Xbox Family Settings app These Xbox console settings do not extend to mobile gaming experiences.
Web and search filtering Available through Microsoft Edge Microsoft says other commonly used browsers are blocked for this filtering mode to work.

Microsoft’s web and search filters operate through Microsoft Edge on Xbox, Windows, and Android. Browser coverage is therefore narrower than console coverage: installing the family app does not make every browser subject to the same web-filtering behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I configure the app for different family situations?

Begin with the risk or restriction that matters most, then add the other controls without changing the account structure. The following configurations use the app’s separate controls rather than treating parental control as one all-or-nothing switch.

For a young child using an Xbox after school

  • Set short weekday permitted ranges and a longer weekend schedule if appropriate.
  • Choose an age-based content level before allowing downloads.
  • Restrict multiplayer and communication to nobody or friends only.
  • Use ask-to-buy for every purchase request.
  • Check weekly reports to see whether the schedule matches actual use.

For an older child who plays online

  • Keep the content level aligned with the child’s permitted maturity rating.
  • Use friends-only communication if unrestricted contact is not necessary.
  • Review cross-network play, clubs, friend lists, and incoming requests individually.
  • Leave spending approval enabled even when multiplayer is allowed.
  • Use pause or a one-time extra-time response instead of permanently raising the daily limit for an exceptional event.

For a household with a Windows gaming PC

  • Confirm the child uses the same Microsoft account and Xbox profile on the PC and console.
  • Test the screen-time and content rules on the Windows account before assuming they apply.
  • Use Microsoft Edge when web and search filtering is required, because Microsoft’s filtering mode depends on that browser and blocks other commonly used browsers.

What are the most common setup problems?

Most failures come from account mismatch or from expecting a console control to cover a device the app does not support. Work through these checks in order.

  • The rule is saved but the child can still play: verify that the console session uses the exact Microsoft account and Xbox profile added to the family group.
  • Reports show no activity: confirm the child used the family-linked account and signed out after playing so the session was attributed correctly.
  • A Windows limit is not applying: check the Windows sign-in as well as the Xbox profile; both must belong to the family group.
  • A mobile game is unaffected: the Xbox Family Settings app does not extend its Xbox settings to mobile gaming experiences.
  • Web filtering behaves differently across browsers: use Microsoft Edge on Xbox, Windows, or Android for Microsoft’s filtering mode; other commonly used browsers are blocked for that mode to function.
  • A friend or purchase request is handled incorrectly: open the profile that generated the request and review the social or spending control there rather than changing a household-wide assumption.

How do I audit the settings after setup?

Perform a short review whenever you add a device, change a child’s account, or notice a report that does not match what happened. A consistent audit prevents one forgotten control from undermining the rest.

  1. Confirm the family organizer and child membership at account.microsoft.com/family.
  2. Open each child profile in the app and check the screen-time schedule for every day that matters.
  3. Review the age filter separately from multiplayer, communication, clubs, cross-network play, friend lists, and incoming requests.
  4. Check spending history and the ask-to-buy decision path.
  5. Verify the account used on every Xbox and Windows device.
  6. Compare a daily or weekly report with the child’s actual session, including whether they signed out.

This audit approach keeps the app’s controls understandable: time, content, social access, spending, and reporting are distinct settings that can be changed without replacing the entire family configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many family settings does Xbox Family Settings include?

Xbox described the service in 2020 as having more than 20 customizable family-setting features. That description is a historical feature count, not a promise that every account or current app version presents exactly the same number of switches.

Can each child have different Xbox rules?

Yes. The app works from individual child profiles, allowing one child’s schedule, maturity level, social permissions, and spending workflow to differ from another child’s. Select the intended profile before saving any change.

Does installing the app protect games on a child’s phone?

No. Xbox Family Settings manages Xbox consoles and can extend selected Xbox content and screen-time controls to a properly linked Windows PC. It does not extend these Xbox settings to mobile gaming experiences.

Do I have to replace my console to use Xbox Family Settings?

No. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles are supported, so owners of a compatible console can use the app without buying new hardware. The important requirement is the child’s Microsoft and Xbox account linkage, not a new console purchase.
