Usually, yes—but enable it as dual stack. If your host can serve the WordPress site over IPv6 and IPv4, publishing an IPv6 address can make the site reachable from more networks and leaves you ready for visitors whose providers use IPv6 by default. Keep the existing IPv4 address, because WordPress, update services, APIs, monitoring systems, and some visitors may still depend on it.

IPv6 is not required to install or run WordPress, and enabling it alone does not guarantee faster pages, better search rankings, or stronger security. The decision is worthwhile when your provider offers a tested configuration and you can verify DNS, TLS, firewalls, proxies, updates, and monitoring before changing production traffic.

What IPv6 changes for a WordPress site
IPv4 and IPv6 are two internet protocols. A browser connected through IPv6 can reach an origin that has an IPv6 address without crossing an IPv4 translation gateway. On a dual-stack site, the DNS name has both an A record (IPv4) and an AAAA record (IPv6). Clients choose a working path according to their network and operating system.
That extra path matters because networks are not adopting IPv6 at the same rate. Google reported 50.87% IPv6 availability among its users on October 10, 2026. This is a dated measurement of Google users’ connectivity, not a promise that half of your particular audience can use IPv6. Your visitors may be concentrated in a country, mobile network, office, or VPN with a very different mix.

For a small public site, IPv6 is therefore an availability and compatibility decision. It is not a WordPress feature that changes the editor, themes, permalinks, or database.
Is IPv6 a WordPress requirement?
No. WordPress.org’s requirements list supported PHP, a supported database, HTTPS, and a compatible web server. IPv6 is not listed as a prerequisite; the requirements page summarizes the baseline with the words “That’s really it.” A site can run normally on IPv4 alone.

Core, themes, and plugins still need timely updates; HTTPS, backups, least-privilege accounts, malware protection, and firewall rules remain necessary. An IPv6 address is another route to the same application, not a security control.
What you gain—and what you do not
Broader reachability
Visitors on IPv6-only or IPv6-preferred networks can connect directly when your DNS and firewall expose the site correctly. Without an AAAA record, those users may rely on a translation service or an alternate connection, adding a dependency outside your control.
Readiness for changing networks
Mobile, residential, and institutional providers continue deploying IPv6. Adding a tested address now avoids a rushed migration when a larger share of your audience arrives over IPv6. The practical benefit is resilience: two independent addressing paths can keep a site reachable when one path has a routing or provider problem.
No automatic speed improvement
IPv6 can remove some translation steps, but page speed depends mainly on hosting performance, caching, assets, database work, geographic distance, and the visitor’s network. The available evidence does not establish a universal latency or Core Web Vitals gain from adding IPv6. Measure your own traffic rather than promising a speed boost.

No established SEO boost
Search engines need to crawl a reachable, reliable site. There is no established ranking bonus for merely publishing an AAAA record. IPv6 can support crawlability for IPv6-capable infrastructure, but it does not substitute for indexable content, correct status codes, internal links, or performance work.
Dual stack versus IPv6-only
These architectures have different operational consequences:

The WordPress.org Systems team specifically advises investigating DNS64/NAT64 when operating in an IPv6-only environment so IPv4-only resources can be reached transparently. Without DNS64/NAT64 or an equivalent gateway, an IPv6-only server can fetch your site while being unable to check for WordPress updates or contact a plugin’s IPv4-only API.
When enabling IPv6 is worth it
Use this decision test before touching DNS:
- Provider support: the host can assign a stable IPv6 address or prefix and documents routing, reverse proxy, CDN, control-panel, and firewall behavior.
- Dual-stack origin: the web server listens on IPv6 as well as IPv4, with no assumption that IPv6 traffic is trusted.
- Operational coverage: TLS certificates, WAF rules, rate limits, uptime checks, log ingestion, and abuse controls process IPv6 addresses.
- Dependency access: core, theme, and plugin update checks and external APIs work from the origin’s network.
- Rollback: you can remove the
AAAArecord or disable IPv6 without losing theArecord.
If any of these answers is unknown, ask the host for written confirmation or keep the site on IPv4 until you can test. A documented dual-stack service is a stronger choice than an inexpensive address added without firewall and monitoring support.

1. Inventory every endpoint
Ask whether the WordPress origin, administrative control panel, mail system, CDN or reverse proxy, staging server, uptime monitor, and security services are dual stack. Record which system terminates HTTPS and which system owns DNS. Do not assume that an IPv6 address on the virtual machine automatically covers a proxy or CDN in front of it.
2. Obtain and reserve the address
Have the provider assign the IPv6 address or prefix and document the gateway, subnet, and interface configuration. Use a stable address for a public web origin. Confirm whether the address changes when the server is rebuilt; if it can change, plan DNS automation or a documented manual update.

3. Configure the web server
Make the HTTP and HTTPS virtual hosts listen on the IPv6 address. Preserve the existing IPv4 listeners. Check that the intended site, rather than a provider default page, answers when the IPv6 address is used with the correct host name.
4. Install a certificate that covers the hostname
TLS certificates validate names, not address families, so the certificate for www.example.com must be presented on IPv6 exactly as it is on IPv4. Test the certificate chain, SNI selection, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect, and both the apex and www hostnames before publishing DNS.

At the authoritative DNS provider, add an AAAA record for the hostname that serves WordPress. Leave the existing A record in place. If you use separate records for the apex and www, update each one that should be reachable. Use a moderate TTL during the change so a rollback is not delayed by a long cache period.
6. Open only the required firewall paths
Permit TCP 80 and 443 to the web service on IPv6 if you serve HTTP and HTTPS. Apply the same administrative restrictions, WAF policies, connection limits, and abuse controls used for IPv4. Do not expose SSH, database ports, dashboards, or mail administration merely because the new address exists.
7. Test before and after DNS publication
From an IPv6-capable network, request the site with a command such as curl -6 -I https://www.example.com/. Inspect the status code, redirect chain, certificate name, security headers, cookies, and cache behavior. Query DNS with dig AAAA www.example.com and verify that the returned address is the intended service. A successful DNS lookup alone does not prove that the firewall or web server accepts traffic.
8. Exercise WordPress functions
Sign in through the normal administrative URL, load representative pages, submit a test form, and check media or embedded content. In the dashboard, run the available update checks and confirm that core, themes, and plugins can contact their update endpoints. Test any payment, email, analytics, map, video, or identity provider that the site relies on; those services may have their own IPv4-only or allowlist behavior.

9. Verify crawler access
Confirm that Googlebot and other legitimate crawlers can reach the IPv6 path without an accidental block, challenge, or rate limit. Review web-server and WAF logs for IPv6 requests and compare response codes with IPv4 requests. Do not whitelist every IPv6 address broadly; use documented crawler verification and normal security controls.
10. Monitor and retain a rollback
Watch uptime checks, error rates, origin logs, update notifications, contact forms, and traffic by address family after DNS caches refresh. If IPv6 produces failures, remove the AAAA record or disable the IPv6 listener while leaving the A record active. Keep notes on the old DNS value, firewall change, and certificate configuration so the rollback is reversible.
IPv6-specific failure modes and fixes
The site works on IPv4 but times out on IPv6
Check the provider’s route and gateway, the server’s IPv6 listener, and the host firewall first. A common mistake is opening ports on IPv4 rules but not on the IPv6 ruleset. Then test from a genuinely IPv6-capable connection rather than from a machine that silently falls back to IPv4.
HTTPS shows a certificate or redirect error
Inspect which virtual host answers on IPv6 and whether the proxy presents the same certificate as IPv4. Correct the SNI mapping and redirect rules, then repeat the test for both the apex and www names.

WordPress updates or a plugin API fail
Test outbound connectivity from the origin, not just inbound page loads. If the destination has only an IPv4 address, an IPv6-only server needs DNS64/NAT64 or another translation path. On a dual-stack server, restore or prefer a working IPv4 route for that dependency while you investigate; do not remove IPv4 from the public site to solve an outbound compatibility problem.
Only some visitors report errors
Compare logs by address family and location. An incorrect AAAA record can send users to an old server, while an MTU or routing problem can affect one network but not another. Temporarily removing the AAAA record is a controlled way to confirm whether IPv6 is the trigger.

Monitoring reports the site down
Ensure the monitor supports IPv6 and is checking the same hostname and TLS path as users. If it probes a literal address, update it for the new endpoint. Keep at least one IPv4 monitor so an IPv6 routing incident does not hide an outage—or create a false one.
How to compare hosting or network options
When evaluating a managed WordPress plan, VPS, CDN, or reverse proxy, compare the capabilities that affect the whole request path:

Cost, effort, and maintenance
WordPress itself does not require a separate IPv6 license, plugin, or code change. The cost is determined by your host, DNS provider, CDN, address management, and engineering time. Some providers include IPv6; others charge for additional networking, premium support, or a managed proxy. Confirm current pricing and feature limits directly with the provider because these terms vary by region and plan.
After activation, maintain IPv6 as part of ordinary operations: include it in disaster-recovery documentation, firewall reviews, log retention, vulnerability response, uptime checks, and staging tests. When a server is rebuilt or a provider changes its prefix, update DNS only after the new address has passed the same TLS and application checks.
Bottom line for a simple WordPress site
Enable IPv6 when your host can provide a tested dual-stack setup. Publish an AAAA record only after confirming the web server, certificate, firewall, proxy or CDN, WordPress updates, external integrations, crawler access, and monitoring over IPv6. Keep the A record and a rollback plan. Choose IPv6-only hosting only when every dependency has been tested through DNS64/NAT64 or an equivalent translation service; otherwise, the added risk outweighs the modest operational benefit for a simple site.
