To talk across platforms, verify that everyone is using the intended linked Activision account, enable cross-network play at the console level, and then check MWII’s Voice Chat and Chat Channel settings. If you want to stop contact, use the narrowest control that fits: mute for the current session, block for ongoing restrictions, or console privacy settings for broader limits.
The exact Audio-tab wording can differ by platform, mode and game build. Use the labels visible in your installed MWII version; the paths below identify the controls that Activision, Sony and Microsoft document.

What must be working before cross-platform voice chat can work
Activision describes MWII crossplay as allowing players on all supported platforms to play together. Crossplay and cross-progression depend on linked platform accounts, so each player should sign in to the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live or PC account that is connected to the intended Activision account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Use the correct Activision identity. Make sure both players can see each other in the Activision Friends List. A console-friend entry alone may not be enough if it belongs to a different linked account.
- Check account connections. If someone recently changed a console profile or moved from one PC account to another, confirm that the new platform identity is linked to the Activision account being used in MWII.
- Separate play permission from voice permission. A console can allow a cross-network match while its privacy settings still block invitations, messages or voice communication.
- Remember that a headset is optional. The documented settings do not require special hardware. A headset or microphone is only needed for two-way spoken communication; players can still use mute, block and text controls without one.
Complete these checks for every participant before changing in-game audio options. Otherwise, a blocked invitation or an account mismatch can look like a voice-chat failure.

Turn crossplay on or off by platform
PlayStation: change the MWII crossplay switch
- Open the MWII Options menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Account & Network.
- Select Crossplay.
- Set the option to the value you want, then return to the lobby and let the game update its matchmaking state.
Activision says PlayStation crossplay is enabled by default. Turning it off limits matchmaking with players on other platforms; it does not replace Sony’s separate controls for who can invite you, message you or see profile information.
Xbox: allow cross-network play in Xbox privacy
Xbox uses the console’s privacy permission rather than relying only on an MWII switch. Open the Guide and follow this path:
- Press the Xbox button to open the Guide.
- Choose Settings.
- Open General.
- Select Online safety & family.
- Choose Privacy & online safety.
- Open Xbox Live privacy.
- Select View details & customize.
- Open Communication & multiplayer.
- For playing with people outside Xbox Live, choose Allow to permit cross-network play or Block to prevent it.
If this Xbox permission is set to Block, an in-game crossplay toggle cannot override it. The same privacy layer can affect invitations and communication even when a cross-platform match is otherwise available.

If the game offers a crossplay switch, change it there; if it does not, check the account and platform permissions that govern your PC service.

Confirm that the players can actually find one another
- Sign in to each intended PlayStation, Xbox or PC account.
- Open the Activision Friends List in MWII.
- Confirm the friend appears with the expected Activision identity.
- Send a lobby invitation from the account that will host the party.
- If the invitation never arrives, stop troubleshooting the microphone and check console privacy, account links and block lists first.
Enable and test MWII voice chat
Activision’s communication guidance is written for the shared Call of Duty interface, so some labels may appear differently in MWII or in a particular mode. Do not assume that every platform exposes identical switches. In the installed game, open the Audio or Voice Chat section and verify that voice chat is enabled, the intended microphone is selected, and the output device is the one you are listening through.
Use a private party or a quiet lobby for the first test. Have one player speak while the other watches for the voice indicator, then reverse the test. This distinguishes an input problem from an output or privacy problem without exposing strangers to the test conversation.
Control who can speak to you in a lobby
In the pre-game lobby, highlight a player, press Select, and choose Mute. Depending on the mode and build, the lobby Voice menu may also offer:
Recommended Free Tools
- Mute All, which silences the lobby for the current session.
- Proximity chat on or off, where that mode supports it.
- Voice-chat groups or channel choices that narrow the audience.
These are session controls. Activision says lobby and scoreboard mutes reset when a new session begins, so use Block or a platform privacy restriction when the goal is to prevent future contact.

Mute someone during a match
- Open the scoreboard: press View on Xbox, the Touchpad on PlayStation, or TAB on PC.
- Highlight the player whose audio you want to stop.
- Select Mute.
The scoreboard action is useful when a player becomes disruptive after the match starts. It does not remove that person from matchmaking or change your persistent privacy settings.
Limit a channel rather than muting every player
Open Chat Channel settings when that menu is available. The Friends & Chat Channels choice limits communication to friends and members of your chat channels. Activision notes an important dependency: the Game Voice Chat setting must be All Lobby for those channel options to function. If the channel selector appears ineffective, check that prerequisite before assuming the feature is broken.
Apply console privacy controls for invitations and cross-network contact
PlayStation privacy
Sony’s privacy controls determine who can see parts of your profile, invite you to chat and send crossplay game invitations. Tighten those permissions when you want communication limited to friends or friends of friends. This is broader than muting one MWII player: it can stop an invitation or interaction before the game has an opportunity to present it.
Use the most restrictive audience that still supports the way you play. A friends-only setting is appropriate for a closed group; a friends-of-friends setting permits introductions through existing contacts without opening invitations to every player.

Xbox privacy and the avoid list
Xbox checks cross-network communication permissions in addition to MWII’s in-game settings. Review Communication & multiplayer if a friend can join a match but cannot hear you, invite you or exchange messages.
The Xbox avoid list is a persistent console-level response. It can prevent voice communication, text communication, game invites and club invites from the avoided player. Use it when a session mute is not sufficient, or when the unwanted contact continues outside the current match.
Mute, block or report: choose the control that matches the problem
| Control | Scope | Duration | What it changes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mute one player | One player | Current session | Stops that player’s voice for you in the lobby or match | A temporary fix for noise or an argument |
| Mute All or a voice-channel filter | Lobby or selected channel | Current session or until the channel setting changes | Reduces the audience you hear | Quiet play without blocking everyone permanently |
| Block in Activision | One player across communication and invites | Persistent until reversed | Restricts communication options and invitations; removes the player from your Activision Friends List when applicable | Repeated unwanted contact |
| PlayStation privacy restriction | Platform audience | Persistent account setting | Controls profile visibility, chat invitations and crossplay game invitations | Friends-only or friends-of-friends contact |
| Xbox privacy or avoid list | Platform audience or one avoided player | Persistent until changed | Controls cross-network communication; the avoid list can stop voice, text, game and club invites | Cross-network restrictions or harassment outside one match |
| Report | One player and the reported behavior | Escalates to moderation | Provides evidence for enforcement rather than merely silencing the reporter’s client | Offensive, abusive or rule-breaking conduct |
Block a player for a lasting restriction
Activision states that blocking a player restricts all communication options and invites between you and that player and removes the player from your Activision Friends List when applicable. Use the player’s profile or social menu in MWII to select Block. Because the exact placement can vary by build, follow the on-screen confirmation and verify that the player no longer appears as an available friend or invite target.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Troubleshoot the most common cross-platform voice problems
You can play together but cannot hear each other
- Confirm neither player has muted the other in the lobby or scoreboard.
- Check that both players are using the intended output device and microphone in the installed Audio or Voice Chat menu.
- Check the voice-chat audience. A Friends & Chat Channels selection will not behave as expected unless Game Voice Chat is set to All Lobby, as Activision documents.
- On Xbox, verify that Communication & multiplayer permits communication with people outside Xbox Live.
- On PlayStation, review the privacy audience for chat and crossplay invitations.
- Leave and re-enter the lobby after changing permissions so MWII can refresh the session.
A friend cannot invite you or the invite never arrives
- Check that both accounts appear in the Activision Friends List and are linked to the correct platform identities.
- Check whether either player has blocked the other.
- Review PlayStation invitation privacy or Xbox communication and multiplayer permissions.
- On Xbox, inspect the avoid list; it can block game invites as well as voice and text.
- Only after those checks, revisit the in-game crossplay setting.
You hear strangers and want a quieter lobby
- Use Mute on individual players from the lobby or scoreboard.
- Use Mute All when you want silence for the current session.
- Turn proximity chat off when that option is offered in your mode.
- Choose Friends & Chat Channels if you want to hear only friends and channel members and the required All Lobby game-voice setting is enabled.
Crossplay is unavailable on Xbox
Go directly to the Xbox privacy path, ending at Communication & multiplayer, and set playing with people outside Xbox Live to Allow. An MWII switch cannot override a console-level Block setting. If the account is managed by a family group, the organizer may need to change the permission.
The microphone works in another app but not in MWII
Reopen MWII’s Audio or Voice Chat menu and select the intended input and output devices. Check whether the current mode uses a different voice channel or push-to-talk behavior. Because the exact MWII Audio-tab labels are not established uniformly across builds, use the options shown by your installation rather than copying a path from another platform. If console permissions are correct and the game still cannot establish voice chat, consult Activision Support for the build and account combination you are using.
A practical privacy setup for different play styles
Private group with known friends
- Allow crossplay on the platforms that need it.
- Keep the voice audience at friends or the relevant private channel where available.
- Use a party or friends chat for coordination and leave public proximity chat off.
Open matchmaking with minimal contact
- Allow crossplay if you want the larger matchmaking pool.
- Start with Mute All or a restricted channel and unmute only players you choose.
- Use console privacy settings to limit unsolicited invitations and messages.
Persistent harassment from one account
- Mute the player immediately so the current match is playable.
- Block the player to restrict future communication and invites.
- Report the conduct through MWII, especially for offensive voice or text behavior.
- On Xbox, add the account to the avoid list if contact continues through console features.
Important limits and update expectations
MWII’s shared Call of Duty interface is updated over time, and menu labels can vary by platform, mode and build. Activision’s documented communication actions establish the behavior of lobby and scoreboard muting, channel privacy, blocking and reporting, but they do not provide one universal current path for every PC Audio-tab option. Treat the exact labels on your screen as authoritative.

Crossplay permission, voice-chat permission, invitation privacy and moderation are separate layers. Changing one does not automatically change the others. When a setting appears correct but the interaction still fails, test the layers in order: linked accounts, platform privacy, in-game crossplay, in-game voice audience, then the selected microphone and output device. This order finds permission blocks before you spend time changing audio hardware.
